I read somewhere that "September is the new January". This is based on school starting in many parts of the world in September. Even if this isn't true for you, this is one more good time to make a fresh start on your goals and resolutions for your life.
How did you do with your goals and resolutions for August?
What goals and resolutions do you have for September?
My journey to health and fitness has been successful in large part to the support I've gotten from the women on the "Women Ages 50+" thread. Thank you to all of you who have supported and encouraged me and welcome to all who are joining us for the first time.
Don't forget to bookmark this page so you can find it again.
My word for 2018 is "tenacity".
Resolutions for August (with end of the month comments)
*Do what's necessary to deal with back pain that came on suddenly (yes)
*Act the way I want to feel (yes)
Resolutions for September
*keep following the doctor's directions
*log food and water daily

Oh yes ... I dropped 1.5 kg in August. Not too bad considering I haven't been tracking my food and the quantities my husband serves are larger than they used to be. I've taken up running and stair climbing again to off-set the food intake.

A brief update for August/September ...
Me:
-- working full-time (new projects!)
-- attending a Master's level course at uni (about Management)
-- still trying to catch up on all the paperwork and stuff surrounding my husband's situation
-- increasing my running for a 5K event on September 23
-- walking, running, cycling, and climbing stairs!
My husband:
-- Had bad workplace accident on March 22 ... severe brain injury + some other issues
-- Was finally discharged on July 2 & is at home with homecare during the day, and I am his carer in the evenings and on weekends + a variety of rehab throughout the week.
-- He's got issues with his left leg which prevent him from advancing very far with regaining fitness, but he rode a bicycle a short distance outside last weekend!
-- He's got issues with his right arm, as well.
-- But he's surprising people with the advancements regarding his brain injury. There are still some issues with that, but it is much better than it could have been. He seems to have a rough week or two, and then makes a small surge of improvement, then plateaus for a bit ... that sort of cycle.
It's kind of one day at a time these days.

Thanks Barbie for getting us started on a new month again. Spent the afternoon going to movie and dinner for our anniversary which was August 23. We had planned to do this last Saturday but got a call from DH's doctor telling us to go to the emergency room. So we spent 5 hours there instead. Enjoyed the movie, Christopher Robin. Taking DD to airport early tomorrow so she can catch a plane for Denver. She and her BF are taking a trip to CA and Mexico. She will be gone for a week. They are touring haunted places in CA and staying with my cousin in Mexico.
Goals for September are to go to water exercise consistently and cut sugar in my diet.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA4 -
A very happy September to all! I had hoped to be spending September in Hove, enjoying the seaside, but you all know that story.
I am surprising myself with my equanimity. I know there is nothing I can do at this stage of the game, so my agitation is less than it was when I felt there was something. Serenity prayer, I guess.
I have also been doing bits of meditation here and there and reading 10% Happier and similar books. They have helped a lot. I am getting better at moving on from troubling, recycling thoughts. I am still an angry person, but can get out of the cycle quicker. I am enjoying the lovely, early autumn weather. Mist over the fields.

I'll be joining in.. start of Spring here so hopefully motivation will be easier.
I have a goal to lose 20kg by January 2019 so planning on 1kg per week.

Thanks Barbie,
I went garage saling with my youngest daughter today and she was delighted to find a gorgeous little dapple gray rocking horse at the Men's Shed. It's a place in town where old retired guys hang out in a garage and fix up things that they've rescued from the dump and then sell it to raise money for charity. I don't know who was smiling more, my daughter with her cute rocking horse for my future grandbaby, or the old guys who were beaming that someone loved and valued the work they are doing... My score of the day was a book, "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin, and I am heading to bed now to start reading it. I am pretty happy already, but there's always room for a bit more happiness! I am happy that winter is over and it's the first day of spring, and I've got a foal coming soon and I'm about to start my seasonal fun of making queens. Lots of things to be grateful for, Wendy7 -
August
Continue to Log everything!- Done 98%
30 active minutes 5 days a week- 33%
Lose 3 pounds - Well Lost Actually did, but not really-SMH- Started at 122.8, up to 124.6, finished at 121.2. Was a definite roller coaster, but a loss all the same!
Finish deep cleaning house- 50% Can only do so much in the time and energy available
Fresh food- 30%
August was a rough month. The upside is I finished less than when I started. There was lots of eating out. Lots of exhausted nights. Did get flower beds looking pretty, so Win!
September goals are simple:
Be aware of and log as much as possible.
Be active 30 mins a day 5 days a week
Water- Will be walking and traveling lots so always a challenge.
Enjoy my time off work!
Lose 2 pounds.
Only 5 work hours until vacation! So tired of the lack of help and concern by all but one other person. Will still be spending some time working as I am not caught up, but when sitting on deck in robe, listening to wildlife, looking at mountains, working isn't so bad I usually have plenty of activity, but also plenty of alcohol, will try to be aware of CICO.
Have a blessed day to all my Strong Ladies!

Happy September! I have mixed feeling about it--I love fall, but we all know what follows . . .
Barb I love your analogy--"September is the new January". I am a school teacher and September is definitely January for me. A new beginning!
My goals for September:- Continue walking on a daily basis
- Continue tracking
- No eating after 6 p.m.
- Weigh in October 1st at 143 (currently 145.3) I am hypothyroid and it makes me very slow.
Good luck everyone!

Thank you Barbie for starting us off again this month! I am so glad you are making some small amount of progress. My prayers continue for your continued progress.
On the surface it looks like I had a great August. I did close all the rings on my watch each day and I did earn my special September badge on my watch. However, I lost .2 lbs which put me at a new low, which is too low.
My goals for September are the same, close all the rings on my watch every day, earn my special watch badge again this month and gain a couple of pounds.

Thank you, Barbie! You always start us all off right... Hope you're feeling better, dear heart.
Jenny, Cookie, welcome! We're glad you're here. When you have time, tell us a little about yourselves, too, what you'd like to be called, and where you're from in general. If you already did so, my apologies--I was in and out a lot in August.
Goal for August: Lose 3 pounds. A+ - I lost nine as of this morning. Not as intentionally as you might think! But I'll take them.
Goal for September: Lose 3 pounds. Working on that whole theory of underpromise and overdeliver.
Personal triumph for me - jumped over the ten-pound line between the 180s and the 170s this morning. Those ever-important psychological lines always seem to be where I stall, but for a change my timing was good - instead of getting to the cusp just before I started another business trip, I got there just before a long weekend of working at the house we're rehabbing. I always lose weight on those weekends, as a) it's hot, b) I seldom eat lunch when I'm working physically hard because of the inevitable energy crash a couple hours later. If I eat just breakfast and then dinner/supper in the evening, I sustain my energies almost all day long.
Family asleep in the living room--my favorite two nieces came up for the long weekend to help on the house rehab, got here at 11, we were up to the mountain house by 12, and worked for four hours solid... it was aMAYzing. Love these two girls--34 and 21, and they work with a will, a smile and a song. My son commented that it was like falling into a nest of Disney princesses, being around my family, as we burst into song frequently, and without warning.
The older one told me yesterday that, the way she saw it, ten years from now, when she comes to visit, she'll be able to touch something she painted, or a wall she worked to repair, and say, "I did that, I'm a part of their lives forever." Love that girl, love both of them.
The youngest, whose 21st birthday was just two weeks ago, was born at just 25 weeks in the womb, weighing only one pound 13 ounces (.82 kg). Due in late November, she was born on my mother's 71st birthday, August 17, and named after her, as well as me, Vivyan Lee (Lee is what my family calls me). Her mother, my youngest sister, had placenta previa, and Vivyan kicked her way through it. They both survived, after a few long, scary weeks. My sis couldn't come this weekend, but having family here, and especially our "miracle baby," is such a joyful thing...
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR, with a song in her heart (can't sing out loud at the moment, everyone's asleep! )11 -
Machka - Congrats on the loss! I am so glad to hear your husband continues to see some improvement. Beautiful daffodils!
Kylia - Have a great time on vacation. Try to have at least a few days with no work so you can truly recharge and go home rested.
Hubs and I won't accomplish much today. College football kicks off today and we will be watching from 11 am until it finishes. I will get in my walk while I am watching, so I'll do slightly more than sit in my recliner .
My bland eating has helped get me back on track. No heartburn at all for the last two weeks while I have eaten (extremely) low fat and bland food. I added back some more fat (getting back to my normal) and acid (yeah for red wine vinegar on my salad again!!!!) and did fine. Today I shall attempt 1/2 iced tea 1/2 water and see how that goes. We have a neighborhood fish fry next weekend. I will take a big salad for the pot luck and probably take some turkey or grilled shrimp to put on mine. I don't think I'm brave enough yet to tackle a fried meal. Calorie wise it would be welcome, but I'm afraid the deep fried is still pushing it. I will wait on that for a while longer.
Okie

Thanks Barbie I agree with you for sure, September is the new January! Something about the air changing, the sky seems a little clearer, NY is a beautiful place in the fall, especially the Hudson Valley where I live. I suppose it just lures you in and then you're trapped in .....winter........
Anyway, like every teacher out there, I've got plans, and goals and hopes and dreams for the new year But for the purpose of staying fit and healthy (and yes, I'd like to be back at my maintenance weight) here are my Sept. goals to keep me accountable here:
1. Exercise in some way everyday
2. Stretch every day
3. Meal prep and eat home cooked food and coffee
4. Log my food (yes, I haven't been logging, so back on the horse I git!)
5. Journal every day, gratitude and tasks are included in this
Beth hope the healing continues for your son this month, now that he's home. After he is better, will he return to his place?
Allie you've had a lot to handle, I hope you can sneak to the beach for a little sunshine, you deserve it.

Hello September!
RV Rita3 -
Thank you Barbie for keeping me on track for September!
For August, I lost 1.6 pounds which was somewhat disappointing. I lost overall three inches though which was not a goal, but was good to see. I have increased all my exercise times (and even got the DH to join in). I have gotten out of the house more both for fun and for exercise using some of the local walking trails. I have an appt with a nutritionist in two weeks to help me learn how to diet while still managing the diabetes and liver disease. I have an appointment with do at the end of the month for overall health panel. And, I have a class on weight management scheduled for the beginning of Oct. My overall number for fasting blood sugar are once again in the average range (high average, but acceptable and much improved).
Goals for Sept.:
1. Lose 3 pounds
2. Increase walking to 10,000 steps at least 3 times a week
3. Do full workout videos at least 3 times a week
4. Increase time on machines to 15 minutes each at least 3 times per week
5. Move up to 3 lb weights and add ab reps this month 3 times per week
6. Drink a lot more water daily
7. Continue to get out with people at least once per week
8. Figure out ways to meet my protein goal by working with nutritionist and dr (talk with him about possible depression at appointment, but I do feel better lately)
9. Scrapbook at least 5 pages
10. Begin using the horse dummy my husband built me (get over my fear of falling while dismounting so I can eventually ride again)
Best of luck to all on meeting your Sept. goals!3
