What nobody tells you about losing weight

Losing weight might not make you happy like you thought it would.
You could actually really enjoy the gym.
Don't beat yourself up about missing a gym day, breaks are good and needed.
Not having money to buy new clothes might make you wanna gain weight back at times BUT DON'T!
The less you weigh, the harder it is to burn calories, so push yourself! Losing weight at first is easy then it gets hard. So you're gonna miss those heavier days.
It's okay to stop eating when you're full. It'll be so strange when you see how much you used to be able to eat vs now, but it's a great strange.
It's a lifestyle.
Will add to this when i learn more ☻
1) The only time I avoided the scale is when I did not want to see the gain.
Even if not losing as fast I I’d prefer, I still love to jump on multiple times daily and see the lower number I am now.
This also gives me the normal daily fluctuations and weights of different clothes combos.
2)Disagree totally here.
Losing weight has pretty much made me as happy as I thought it would!
I’m not expecting it to erase all the unhappiness in my life. (That would just be ridiculous)
3)Agreed. Rest days are important
4)Getting out thread and needle to do minor alterations on baggy clothes, especially pant waists, can keep you comfortably in some fav clothes for longer and save $ until you get closer to UGW. It doesn’t have to be pretty, it just has to be functional
5) In some exercise it’s not really harder, it’s just that you don’t burn as many calories at your new weight as you did at the higher weights.
If you add back the weight via ankle or workout weights while walking, etc, you will burn the same amount of calories as before.
But... the upside of being at a lower weight is that it’s easier to move faster and further so even though you might be walking faster or running now, you don’t have the dead weight bearing down on your joints like before and thus it’s a trade off.
Most people would choose to walk further or faster as opposed to loading themselves back down with dead weight to lose those equivalent calories.
Also, at lower weights you don’t burn as much just living everyday, so in order to keep losing at the same rate, you need to add that extra exercise into the calculations until hitting your UGW.
6-7) Agreed.
One lifestyle change-
Making sure to drink water a few minutes before a meal and taking another swallow or two before the first bite of every meal is an excellent way to make sure not to eat food because you are actually thirsty. This way the body actually gets a chance to register food as food and not a hydration source. (How often I have inhaled a couple hundreds grams, which can be 300+ calories, of grapes as a thirst quencher before really enjoying them as food)

Ok all you 72 degree lovers...borderline. If there is a breeze, I will run, but I prefer much cooler. I am happily awaiting autumn and morning temps in the 40s and 50s. I really hate to sweat buckets. I did manage 10k this morning with 69 degree temp and drizzle. So humid, my sweat did not evaporate.4

Complimentary to my other post ...
How weird it feels not to go shopping all the time. Before, I ran out of fruit or bread or something rather quickly, and went shopping at least twice a week. Now, I go once a week, if even that. And it feels totally weird - like I forgot to do something.8 -
Walking through the supermarket and going past all the the bad food i used to love with not so much as glance or hint of temptation. The sense of power this gives is amazing17

While I was 63 before it clicked my Way Of Eating was killing me prematurely it is great to see others realizing this at younger ages than I did. Some of the ads I see today that at one time would have caused me to buy that food now often gives me a sick feeling knowing what it would do after it got inside my body.
My new way of eating is not restrictive as I see it but gives me the freedom to focus on living rather than dying. At 67 there is so much death happening in my age group and to have the doctor say last week she say NO red flags as to my future health was an awesome feeling. People are commenting that they notice I no longer ride on the powered carts when shopping. Being able to get in and out of most all vehicles unaided as my joints start moving more freely is also awesome.
Well yesterday I picked up the crankshaft and engine head for the 1948 Model B Allis Chalmers tractor like I played on at the age of 3 and started driving at the age of 5. Just being able to get on the little tractor is exciting to say nothing about doing a lot of the restoring myself.
We each are finding more and more reasons to keep doing what works for us health wise. Best of continued success to all.35 -

I switched to Zenni and my last two pairs of glasses have been under $60. Even with a lot of more expensive features you can probably get them under $100. Then you can just buy new pairs when your mood suits5 -
72 degrees can feel quite chilly (indoor temp anyway). 72 degrees outdoors usually has enough humidity to not feel chilly to me.
We keep our AC on 72 during the day, 70 at night (I've read you sleep better chillier). I pretty much freeze at 70.
I was so cold yesterday in Kroger doing the grocery shopping. I had to pace out my frozen shopping because I couldn't spend too long in the cold isles. I was literally rubbing my arms cold. I left contemplating using the heater in the car my feet were so cold...but it was humid outside and cured me quickly.5 -
That getting rid of your big clothes will cause a slight panic attack or that you will want to keep an extra pair at that size because "just in case"... or "what if's".24

How seeing the huge jigging fat on your arms ("batwings) disappear slowly but surely is the bombdotcom!
How seeing the "cottage-cheese" (cellulite) disappear (again slowly but surely) is nothing less than TREMENDOUS
How taking your time and embracing the "process" of patience and consistency in this "business" of PERMANENT weight blastification, how making doing it right and righteously rather than doing it in an obsessive/compulsive/maniac/frantic/comparing yourself and your "situation" with others and NOT doing and being YUCK about this "battle" is just everything...so wise and doable.
ETA: BE YOUR OWN CHEERLEADER...get A LOT of your JOY from cheering others on as well!22 -
I keep a sweater or light jacket in my car. I find most restaurants and movie theaters very chilly in the summer! And I agree with with the comments about the frozen food section of the grocery too. Brrrrr!7

That clothing shopping never gets easier. The challenges are just different.
Shopping while obese challenge: Having a choice of 5 outfits and figuring out which one looks best.
Shopping after dropping weight challenge: Having a choice of 50,000 outfits and figuring out what looks best on you. Especially challenging when you're 5'7" and every pair of pants has to be "long" or end up looking like capris and dresses that are "knee length" on the model and are barely shirts on your frame height. Note: I spent 2 hours at Target yesterday hunting down the 1 pair of blue jeans that are 6L.7 -

Would love 72 deg here - feeling a bit chilly her in SW of UK Though the sun is still out so not too bad 18.15 and it's 62 deg F
That's my inside temp. It's 90+ outside.
I actually went outside to warm up.
My 26 year old step son complains as I have the thermostat set to go to 75F at home. He says it's hot and I caught him setting it below 72. So I put a PIN on it. He doesn't pay the bill, so why should he set the thermostat.
He can get off the couch, stop watching anime and get some exercise and slim down.
Sadly, my fat clothes have been going in his closet. I was hoping my example would motivate him to at least try to get into shape. I think I would have been embarrassed at the age of 26 if a 53 year old man was in better shape than me. But he has to be him and I'll be me.
But since I pay the electric bill, I get to set the thermostat.
Next time he complains about being hot in the house, I'll send him outside to mow the lawn with the push mower.
It's like you're speaking my life right now2 -
For me, it is revisiting old pictures taken relatively recently that do not match my recollection of the picture at the time. I remember three years and 50 pounds ago I took a picture and thought I looked relatively normal. Now, I see my face was very round and could not believe that person was me! Its amazing to see how the human mind deludes itself into changing reality into a more palatable fiction!15

He said to my wife, his mom, did you know the thermostat has a PIN. Of course, I shared it with her and she has the Nest App on her phone, so she can set it anyway...
I know, it's passive aggressive. He wont ask me, he just walks up to the t-stat and sets it to what he wants as if he owns the place.
I know, part of it is the step son arrangement. I probably am easier on my bio daughter, my wife's step daughter. And she is harder on her, so it balances.
Hers is the last kid still with us, and he's the oldest of the three.
Go figure...6 -

Ouch!!!! So you look at rompers with even more disgust than I do. I haven't been able to find a single one that didn't try to jam itself up my butt. On you, a romper would try to slice you up to your navel. Side note: Target has a line if skirts that are "calf length" aka, slightly below or just to my knee... So knee length or just above your knees for you.7 -
That you will have to learn to say goodbye to favorite clothing items. I volunteered for the Berlin Half Marathon in April, and as a thank you, we got this awesome Adidas jacket. Mine was in XL, and it fit perfectly. Well, I wore it today, and I looked like a kid wearing daddy's coat. I was drowning in that sucker! Nooooooooooo! I love that jacket!16

That your going to have to give up your old favorite sleeping positions as they are no longer comfortable. I've been trying to get used to sleeping in a different position for a year, barely getting used to it.8

Oh my God I have struggled with this about 3 months now. Looks like I have a long road ahead of me.
I saw your pic in your old pants in another thread. Oh wow! Hats off to you. Well done.3 -

I used to sleep on my side. Now that I lost the knee padding, shoulder padding and waist cushion, sleeping on my side is not only uncomfortable, but painful at times. And anything against my ribcage hurts now, including firm pillows. GRRRRRRR.
Thanks! I can do something really weird my old sweats, my waist fits into the elastic leg opening: I could possibly cut them up bust out my sewing kit and make 4 skirts out of them!6 -
Being able to sit into airline seats and not pouring into someone elses seat. Long flights are not as tortuous.
Also seeing the seat belt strap with lots left over. Yea!!!16 -

9 weeks ago I started a journey to become healthier and more physically fit. Working thru the pain (tendinitis, plantar fasciitis), changing my diet (drastically), and rearranging my daily routines have all been a part of this journey. I’m now down to 175 pounds, 4 pant sizes, and a medium sized shirt! I have confidence in myself again. I walk tall and proud again, I treat others better and, my overall attitude towards people has improved! Celebrate the little victories!32

That good ole ice cold water is sooooooo good, so refreshing and you (or at least I) reach for it now more than any other drink--amazing (because for YEARS I absolutely HATED drinking water so much)! I literally CRAVE water now, especially ice cold water so much.14

I went to get a massage today - the first since about 8 months and 15-20 lbs ago, and a transition from overweight to being at a healthy weight - and noticed how different it felt to get a massage! I guess I have lost back fat or something because it almost felt like she was massaging my bones - ribs, new definition in my shoulder, etc. It was super obvious to me where my body had changed. I didn’t even think my back had much fat on it previously but could really feel the difference. Weird!16

Ugh I’m with you on this one. I usually sleep on my stomach, but like to read on my side. Lately that has been uncomfortable since my ANKLES are too bony? Seriously?
One of my big truth reasons for doing this is having healthy pregnancies and starting a family. My mom casually mentioned once that she used to sleep on her stomach until she was expecting me and I got too big to be slept on. Now that I put 1+1 together, I might be in for a problem if I can eventually no longer sleep on my stomach and my ankles (wtf) prevent me from sleeping on my side. On my back I snore and wake myself up.
