@Elise4270 Shorter would honestly seem counter-intuitive (to me), given that height usually means longer legs...but then again, Eliud Kipchoge is 5'7" and look at that guy fly!

I had never heard of either of those running/racing weight things. Wow. Just wow. Not ever going to be either of those. One is doable, but not desired and the other is grossly underweight. Just wow.
As for virtual races....I did one when my real one was cancelled for weather.2 -
Oh my god. I'm pretty lean - in fact in the last two days two complete strangers have asked me how I stay so slim - and Fitzgerald would have me lose two pounds, a weight I was a few months back which didn't look great on me, but Stillman, to be a long distance runner, would have me lose nearly 20 pounds. From where exactly?? 52.7kg - the last time I was that weight I was about 14 years old.1

Not feeling it today. I have a very tight spot between my shoulder blades which I think is from all the coughing I did for two weeks. It doesn't hurt as such, but it's a niggly ache. I want something to go click and then it will be ok. I had a massage this morning which loosened the tight muscles around my neck and shoulders, but the actually sticking spot is still stuck. Hoping that a heat pack on it tonight should suffice, and if not, yoga tomorrow.
So even though I was feeling off I still went out for a run. Once again, my legs proved that the fatigue was all in my head with a 5:42 without any real effort.

I wanna join! I'm aiming for 160 km/100 miles this month. I've only done 18.8 km so far due to a cold, but i'm sure I can catch up. My main focus for now is to gain some speed. I can run relatively fast on asphalt but then my knees get angry with me. My knees stay happy when I run on a soft forest trail but then I'm so slow due to the hills. Running up hill is exhausting, running down hill is scary especially when the ground is wet and muddy. Trying to find a compromise that keep my knees and my timer happy.14

Just my lean mass has me overweight for all but sprinter and non-runner on the stillman calculator. The racing weight book includes age and your current body fat percentage and gives a much more conservative target (it'll be even more conservative early next year when I pop into the next age group ).7

Yesterday was a rest day after my long run, as well as the start of my taper weeks.
Nineteen days...my anxiety is quickly increasing!
The Stillman calculator says I need to lose 29 pounds. Fitzgerald says I need to lose 18 pounds. I struggle just to stay in my 5 pound range!8 -

@PastorVincent - wow - that is a lot of flooding! I didn't realize Pittsburgh had received that much rain!
@zdyb23456 - the lines for gas and supplies reminds me of when we're going to get hit with a blizzard - same thing happens. Except I'll take a blizzard any day over a hurricane. Wishing you safety.
@sarahthes - that's quite a swing in temps! Is that normal for this time of year? Yikes - for all the grumbling about hot weather I wouldn't be quite ready for freezing temps yet.
@katharmonic - LOL - show that high school kid who's boss.
So as I was looking up half marathons last night I discovered that the Mississippi Blues half and the Gulf Shoes half team up together - one is on a Sat and the other on a Sun. They'll bus you from one to the other! A January escape to Gulf Shores - I just may have to be this crazy. Not sure how I'm going to explain this to my husband who already thinks I'm nuts for doing a half two weekends in a row - when I tell him this would be two halfs in one weekend he'll shake his head, tell me I'm crazy, and then say "I'll stay home with the dog, you go." I think I'll start checking out airfare and lodging today.

The book says, in regards to body fat percentage, "Most endurance athletes, including beginners, are genetically capable of reaching at least the 80th percentile for their gender and age group." So, he has folks in the middle range of starting body fat percentage shooting for that 80th percentile. For a 40-49 year old male (which I am at the very tip top of, turning 50 in Feb) he would have me shoot for 16.3% body fat, which should be fairly easily doable for me (in fact my current goal would have me going lower than that so he is pretty conservative). He doesn't have you shooting for a specific body weight but, rather, for specific levels of body fat.
The book also doesn't try to squeeze you into a one size fits all thing. The basic premise is replace junk with better food and let your body find it's own 'racing weight'. How clean you eat has an impact on where you end up. He doesn't push everyone to go for 'elite' so he's not directing you to maximize how clean you eat.3 -

I'm so impressed by the elite athletes, and our own @garygse who can maintain and excell at that lean and mean range. I'm sure having less mass to haul around would be a huge advantage. I don't intend to try it, as I'm not even an age group competitor, but I am about to age up!

Before work run today because I have an after-work commitment (OK, happy hour). I really should try to make this a regular on Tuesdays at least. I mean the running, not the happy hour. We'll see how that goes!

7 slow miles this morning, but no real excuses. Weather was quite decent. But legs felt heavy. Didn't feel comfortable until about 6.5 miles. But stopped at 7 because it was late. Weird how on the last two runs HR has gradually gone down during the run, starting at 127 and ending at 115.

The Garmin 635 can store mp3s (music, podcasts, etc) to play. But it is $450 on Amazon. I do not know of any that will play iHeart Radio/etc without a phone as those need internet service.0 -
Yesterday was perfect running weather, for a change. Ran the 5k around the lake at Shelby Farms a second time, since I wasn't satisfied with how tired the hills made me the first time. Better. I still don't like running there, no trees, and the people aren't friendly for some reason. But we walked over and visited the buffalo for a cool down walk, and that was pretty nifty.9

Re: the Stillman calculator. My goal weight, 137, would put me at sprinter. I've been all the weights on that chart at one time or another and was not very healthy at long-distance weight - I used to faint if I skipped breakfast when I weighed 119 lbs, and got colds all the time. I was also visibly bony at that weight.2

They gave out those twisty stick/necklaces at the night race but I found them much too annoying to run in. That's why the paint seemed like a good alternative.
When I ran my night race back in December I braided three glow necklaces together and wore them on my head, because the bouncing on my chest when I wore them as necklaces was annoying. They didn't bounce on my head.4 -

I'm an inch shorter than you, @mbaker566 and right around the same weight at the moment. I'd like to lose another 20 pounds or so to get down to a "normal" BMI and then decide whether that's sustainable for me. Forget about this sub-115 lbs noise! That said, if I never lost another pound I think I'd be happy - I don't think I've ever looked this good even when I was at my lowest weight - thank you weight lifting!PastorVincent wrote: »I want music.

The limited music capacity surprised me when I was looking at Garmins the last couple of days. I genuinely like not running with a phone and still having access to a decent music library. I'm getting why you've said it's very individual.4 -

I treated myself to the Kara Goucher Oiselle jacket and sweat pants for after the race. Of course I bought them when I was set for the marathon but I guess they will still work. 😂7 -
