@mbaker566 Thanks so much for the good luck, I appreciate it and I wish I was able to run it! I was really looking forward to it but my doctors said no way. After like 6 weeks of no running it looks like I will be cleared to do some easy run/walking next week and I'm crossing my fingers the back/hip pain doesn't come back. Working on my core/hips/glutes in PT so things are starting to look better.8

I've been running for years and was ramping up this summer. Sadly the 115+km i happily ran in August caused my legs to rebel suddenly and i feel apart :P On rest and rehab since Aug 30th. No diagnosis on injury, though after many apts with RMT and Physio we've discovered the Hip flexor, calves and worse quads are very tight.
Having said that, I absolutely STILL need to "get back into running" slowly and safely. I may go as low as "testing the waters" at 30 seconds run, 30 seconds walk for 3 times (with a warm-up walk and cool-down walk) as a tester and build from there. have discussed with physio on some potential plans and things like once I pass the test runs doing walk-run at 3-4k every second day and build from there. But not sure HOW slow I need to build back up (I was doing 5runs a week, three 5ks, one hills (7k) and one long run (10-15).7 -
rheddmobile wrote: »So, why do non-runners buy running shoes?
Before I was a runner, I bought running shoes to walk in because they were more comfortable than what was marketed as walking shoes. I was totally clueless about the distinction between types of running shoe, and later learned that buying whatever model of Asics is cheapest wasn't a good strategy for me to buy shoes to run in.
As a fairly new runner, I once had identical models shoes for running (red) and walking (socially muted grey). Now, I have a different model for walking than for running, though I would consider a pair of Kinvaras for walking/social wear if I found them in a muted, non-garish color.
But the examples you gave are just plain weird. I kind of get the nurse who is looking for a magic bullet, but how can someone not realize that cleats are a bad idea for hard surfaces?
My old Ghosts make great walking shoes, but I agree that those examples are pretty out there. My husband bought his first pair of “running shoes” last fall when I started running again and mostly only walks in them. That was definitely a case of being overly optimistic about running but realizing the shoes are still really comfy.3 -

So what do you do when you have a long run scheduled and you are stuck inside due to a tropical storm warning? Well, you lament that you are stuck inside and resign yourself to skipping it cause who in their right mind would ever run 20 miles on a dreadmill??!!
Well, I figured I had nothing else to do. I also knew I wouldn't be able to run the entire thing straight so I decided to break it up into segments. I did 8 miles, then 6 miles, then 4, then 2. It took me 4 hours and 50 minutes total with breaks between where I would drink water and change into dry running clothes and also feed my kids lunch I had a pouch of Honey Stingers after 14 miles and they didn't bother my stomach so that's good to know for future long runs.
Here it is! I went by the treadmill mileage since my Garmin in "indoor" mode doesn't seem as accurate. It wasn't too far off though!

@zdyb23456 :-o good gawd, you are incredible! I was wondering before I got to the segments bit how you'd done it, my treadmill switches itself off after 100 minutes as I found out one very dreary day back when I hadn't progressed from walking to running and Burger King had happened.
@MegaMooseEsq my husband did exactly the same, made me go with him to buy 'proper running shoes' a few months ago and has so far used them for running I think 4 times. Can I get him to believe that he needs to try C25k or something rather than just pushing his overweight and unfit body to run as long as he can bear then spending days in pain? Of course not **sigh** it's like asking for directions when lost, apparently not the sort of thing a 'real man' does.7 -

You seem to have the right approach and understand you have to listen to your body. I too had an injury this summer where previously I was able to run consistently 5 days a week, for ~6 hours a week (3 to 4 runs for up to an hour and a long run up to 2 hours +/-) and then struggled with a knee issue that knocked me out for a solid 6 weeks plus a couple weeks prior to that as I attempted to come back to soon.
After missing most of the summer, I am now just getting back to running every other day, so one week I run 3 days (Tue/Thurs/Sat), the other is 4 days (M-W-F-Sun) and then back to 3 days, etc. My plan now is to build my time/distance each week by increasing the time of each run while getting an immediate rest day with this rotating schedule. This week was 4 days of runs totaling 2 hours (30 min each). Next week I will run 3x but each run will increase slightly to 40-45 min in length so I will run either the same weekly time to 15 minutes more, the following week will be 4 runs up to 45 mins bumping me up to 3 hours with that followed by 3 runs of a hour and then 4 runs for a hour each for a total of 4 hours. After that week, my plan is to introduce my normal 5 day run week with my rest days on Mon/Fri and this will allow me to lower my daily runs as my long run will absorb some time and I then slowly ramp up over the next several weeks from 4 to 6 hours. For the moment, I am just running vs worrying about any sort of workouts, speed, etc. At any time I start to feel an issue, will look to rest/dial-back, etc.
That all said, everyone is a little bit different, so what works for me, might not work for you. Your results might vary but wishing you the best of luck.7 -

I could not run 20 miles on the dreadmill. We don't get tropical storms where I live, but we do get winter storms. There was a Saturday in 2016 when the weather was so severe that all the group runs were canceled and GRTC even had to call off the Freezeroo race that day because it was so cold. I was scheduled to run 22 miles, and didn't think I could handle more than 10 to 13 outside.
So I ran my 22 miles as 177 laps of a 200m indoor track. Later, someone suggested I could have run it on a treadmill. I just stared at him; that never occurred to me.

I guess fitbits aren't very accurate for measuring distance? I can run the same route multiple times and get different distances. I mean they're pretty close but not exactly the same. 1.88 vs 1.73 for example.
I don't know about the models that use GPS, but the older fitbits estimated distance by step count and stride length. That was really, really inaccurate.

rheddmobile wrote: »Slightly off topic, I picked up my packet for Saturday's 5k yesterday, at a local running store, and while I was waiting in line I eavesdropped on the sales associates.
So, why do non-runners buy running shoes? There were two customers in particular who were confusing to me. One was a male nurse who had somehow gotten the idea that expensive running shoes would be more supportive, I guess? He was asking how many shifts the shoes would stand up to before the padding started to break down, and the sales guy was saying, "Um... about three to six months..." and he was saying that wasn't as good as his regular nurse shoes. Um... duh? They make work shoes of various types for a reason. Not to mention that shoes shaped like a rocker are meant for running, and are not comfortable for just standing about. The other customer was an older lady whose friend had told her that Brooks were "good shoes" so she bought some, and now she was complaining they made her feet hurt. She had track shoes with cleats. She was using them mainly to go shopping. The bewildered sales associate was saying, "So, these are really intended for speedwork..."
I understand the cache of wearing gear for a sport you don't do as a fashion statement, but that's not what was happening here. Both these people were just determined to buy unsuitable shoes, and then complaining that the shoes weren't suited to something outside their intended specialty. And if you read online reviews of running shoes, you will find that the majority of running shoe purchasers are like this. My Altra Timps for example have reviews like "these sneakers didn't hold up too well and after a day at work they made my feet hurt." Sneakers? Where? Timps are not even slightly similar to sneakers. They are bizarrely ugly zero drop trail shoes, so unless you work at a national park they probably aren't suited to your work environment. If you want sneakers, you can get excellent supportive ones without spending the money for specialty running shoes. So what gives?
I have friends who buy comfortable running shoes for wearing to work/walking and not to run in. They love how comfortable they are but I think it would be very dependent on the brand/model. I have to admit I ordered a pair of Adidas (on sale) to try running in because I had never tried Adidas before. I like them so much for walking (super comfortable) I have never used them other than minimally for running. So I get the nurse asking about running shoes, they may actually be more comfortable than 'nurse shoes' and possibly cheaper. Note my daughter bought Danskos for work and they were more than any of my running shoes have been.
That said I think it is up to the sales people to explain to the non-runners what might be optimal for their intended use. No sales person should ever sell anyone, let alone an older non-running person, a pair of track cleats unless the intended use is to run sprints on a track. Their job is to guide the customer to the proper shoe and fit.2 -
Fitbits with "GPS" use a cellular connection via the phone to track distance, so it's as accurate as a cell phone GPS.
In other news I get to run in 1.5-2 weeks! Hooray! Hopefully I won't have to DNS my Oct 7 race, just drop to a shorter distance.8 -
Good grief @zdyb23456 you are dedicated to slug out 20 miles on the treadmill. Way to perservere!1

I think I finally convinced my husband to give up on running. He hates it and I’d rather he put his energy towards finding something he at least moderately likes. He does love those shoes, though.2 -
@MegaMooseEsq For long distances, there's also the accuracy issue. I don't trust treadmill distances. Saw a Strava run a friend did on the treadmill, 5 miles at 8:00 per mile. It took him 35 minutes. Hmm. I think he'd notice if the treadmill was really moving at 7:00 per mile instead of 8:00 per mile.
But on the track, one lap is 200 meters. 1609 meters is a mile, so 22 * 1609 = 35,398 meters. 177 laps = 35,400 meters. Even with no GPS signal, I know I ran the distance.5 -
Hey all. Still no running here and a lazy couch day as miss 2 is sick, i assume whatever I had. She's currently in bed sleeping. Miss 4 therefore is having netflix time on the couch while I catch up here lol and craft.
I worked it out so I can do the 9k run next weekend I had signed up for but almost canceled. I kept my name in on the chance I would be able to work it, and I did. And Bonus, my mum and kids will be there to chear me across the finish line. So that's 9k and the following week I do 14. So far the longest I've done is 12. I'm tempted to do a long run of 13 on Monday since I'm missing out this weekend (hubby is away) - anyone see an issue with that? I'm going off my schedule and that makes me nervous. I could just do a couple of 5k mon, 8 tues and Wed, rest Thurs a 6 friday in preparation for the 9 on Saturday. Ah this is annoying lol6 -

So 177 laps would make me dizzy! Plus doesn't that mean one leg got more work out than the other? I am not sure I could pull off 20 miles on a dreadmill but I think that would be more likely for me than 177 laps! How in the world did you keep track?3 -

So today's run was a bit of an adventure. There is a trail near my work that is part of a very long trail that runs 100s of miles all the way to DC. I figured I could just run out for like an hour, turn around and come back. Well was running along listening to my book and something happened. I am not sure what, but suddenly I was on a multilane road with traffic. Major shopping area. Totally had no clue where I was.
No biggie, I have GPS and maps, right? Well, I pull out my iPhone which is soaked with sweat (everything I was wearing was dripping. I fully saturate tech fabrics fairly quickly in this weather) and I could not get the stupid touch screen to work. This is always a problem. Once I dry it off it works fine... but literally, nothing I had on me was dry.
I wander around a bit and find the river. This is good. My truck was parked near the river, so all I had to do was put the river on my right-hand side and run. Eventually, I refound the trial and made it back... 16 miles into my 8-10 miles planned. Dehydrated and starving.
Ducked into a food store and bought some real chocolate milk, then texted my wife and met her at an ice cream shop. So that is a win.
I will have to find a trail map and see if I can guess where I went wrong...15 -

I will have to find a trail map and see if I can guess where I went wrong...
Definitely a win :-)2 -

@MobyCarp My friend from the local running club has a BQ Time. Julie Boles Gummesen. As long as they don't shift the time due to an abundance of competitors.
Can you provide any suggestions on accommodation since it will be at a premium - where do you book to give the best travel options. If I remember it's bus service to the start area and then fend for yourself after the finish.3
