@MobyCarp What shoe are you running Boston in?
My husband is training for his first and realized his current shoes arent the best choice. He's in On Clouds and Newtons. Hes also opposed to Nike and Brooks.
Anyone wany to share the love of a long distance shoe?0 -
@elise4270 I pm'd you re: hilo-volcano registration. Anyone else interested in running in memory of Dennis ( keeprunningfatboy ) on 1/5/19 from Hilo, Hawaii, come on down: free camping at my place!4

MobyCarp and Pastor Vincent:
You especially (and all the other posters) are inspirational.
When I retired from the military in 1994, I swore I'd never run again.
I weighed 234 lbs last October, and realized if I didn't do something positive, I was headed for an early grave.
Started with walking; then walking and jogging; then was able to jog the entire course. The point then was to try to get more competitive.
Fast forward to 09/30/18. At 66 years old, entered my first 5k at a weight of 180. My goal was to not embarras myself.
Finished with a time of 32:07 and won my age group.
Now planning to enter another 5k on 10/21/18, hoping to do a little better time wise (and still not embarras myself).
At least now, thanks to the runners on this thread, I have a feel for what times I can eventually aspire to reach.
My thanks to you all!!16 -
10/1 - rest day, short walk + PT exercises
10/2 - 4.22 km run/walk intervals
10/3 to 10/6 - rest

Race Report!
Several rest days in a row and I was still apprehensive about running today. And then of course there was drama about kids not wanting to get dressed and I couldn't find my trail shoes. But I eventually found them - still covered in dirt front he last time I ran trails (same route as today's race actually!).
Anyway, I got to the race starting area just as the first wave of 15K racers were heading out. Wandered over to the course map to see if I could figure out which direction we were running the course. Once the rest of the 15K and then 10K runners were gone it was time for our course briefing. Chatted a bit with the guy standing next to me only for us to figure out we'd randomly followed each other on Strava a few months ago after a previous race in the series.
We both set out in the last wave and paced with each other across the paved and gravel trails on to the single track. By the time we got there my ankle was pretty annoyed with me so I dropped to a walk for a bit. The trail was lovely - most of the leaves are down so there were decent views at times and it just felt serene and treeish and peaceful. I didn't take any pictures because my phone was in an inside pocket. I forgot how tough and technical the trail is! There aren't a lot of long inclines or descents, but it's super twisty, rooty, and lots of steep 4-5 foot ups and downs (usually on a curve). It's a mountain biking trail and I couldn't imagine riding it! Covered in leaves but it was dry, no mud. Not slippery at all this time unlike the last time I ran it!
I was running and powerhiking alone most of the time I was in here but occasionally some 10K runners would pass through. Apparently some of them accidentally got routed along part of the 15K route by the course marshals? I'm not sure. Definitely not all of them passed me through there so maybe it was part of their route but I thought they were supposed to go through it ahead of us not after us (as the trail doesn't have many passing opportunities).
Broke out of the trees and the course marshal directed me down the powerline slope which surprised me as when I previewed the trail I ran across the powerline and into more forest. So that gave my knees a bit of a workout! Then it was on to a gravel road for maybe 100m and then into the River Valley trail system - double wide for about 2.5km back to the start. I was a bit sore so I did run-walk intervals and that got me home. Finished in 1:02:11 for 5.77km.

@MegaMooseEsq - great job on your 10k and PR! @RunsOnEspresso - great 5k and PR! @kgirlhart - strong work on the PR and age group work! Going to take a moment before I continue reading, but so far looks like solid results on the races this weekend so congrats to all those that raced!
I finally made it back outside today for a run. Yesterday, realized it wasn’t that bad out at soccer so I knew I would get my run in today. Today, I dug out the Nathan single water bottle waist belt as I knew I needed to try it to see how I liked it. Bought this thing a couple years ago, but I’ve had problems with shin splits or something else when I’d get close on the half marathon training and have to scrap things. I’ve been “secretly” training for a half again with the intent that I’d register after I had gotten through last week’s long run as that was the longest I had made training. When I tweaked my knee during that run I decided to see how this weekend’s run went. Well, I’m registered for my first half marathon!! It’s on Oct 28th, so only one long 10 miler left (next weekend have a 5k Race instead of the 10k on the schedule).
I didn’t think to buy fuel before my run and didn’t want any delays so used a roll of Sweettarts and started chewing a couple a few miles in. Overall, it worked well so may just do that as I couldn’t find any sports beans when we were out later today. The Nathan belt was annoying as it wouldn’t stay put, but it was nice to have water. All in all very happy about today as kept the pace nice and steady and it was pretty comfortable. A bit sore now, but will sleep in the compression socks (I put them on after as haven’t run in compression socks) and stretch before bed.

@AlphaHowls yikes! Sounds like a terrible fall. Hope you recover quickly.
I fell a few year back at a race. My foot caught a pot hole as i tried to be friendly to the race support by waving and saying "thanks". I was lucky that i caught myself. My knee took 4 months to recover. Last trail race i face planted hard and no idea how i didnt break my nose. You're not alone.5 -

No run today... too many meetings. Next week will be very touch and go, probably lose track of this thread too. So *hugs* in advance for people that need them, "WOOHOO"s to those that want them, and, remember to not compare yourself to anyone else! We all are on our own journey and are at wildly different places.
Also... YOU GOT THIS!6 -
@AlphaHowls Ouch ouch ouch! That sounds so painful. I can't believe you kept on running so long, but of course you did! I actually fell at the starting line of a half and bruised/scraped both knees and bruised my ribs but ran the whole thing for a PR at the time, so I know the adrenaline gets you. But your poor face and other parts must be so sore. Gentle hugs.
@sarahthes great job on your trail race.
@jele30 good job on your run and yay for signing up for the half in 3 weeks! Good luck!6 -
@katharmonic There is something to be learned from those too-fast long runs. A few weeks before Boston, I tried to run 12 miles with the 7:30 pace group. What I learned from that was, 7:30 was too fast for me to target as marathon pace for Boston. I did much better with it by the time Wineglass rolled around, but I wasn't in shape to hold a 7:30 pace over distance going into Boston. Knowing that 7:30 was too fast even in good weather helped me control my pace for the first 16 miles of Boston.
@Elise4270 My go-to road shoes are Saucony Kinvaras. I have run 5 marathons in them, including Boston 3 times. They are moderately light (not ultra-light) balanced shoes and are quite popular among male marathon runners. That having been said, the correct shoe is a very individual choice. Just because Kinvaras work well for me and several other marathon runners I know doesn't mean they will necessarily work well for your husband. He needs to try different things until he finds something that works well for him.6 -
My final long run of buildup is done. A gentle 20km around the neighbourhood this morning. I was supposed to run yesterday with a group (it's easier with others to distract you from the grind) but as it was my brother-in-law's 50th birthday party the night before, I knew I would be in no shape to get up and out the door by 7:30am. As it was I slept till 10am (haven't done that in at least 15 years). Gentle day yesterday - gardening and not much more. Woke up a box of birds this morning (children conveniently at their grandparents until lunch today) and heading out for a couple of long loops of the neighbourhood. Timed it to swing past my letterbox at 11km where I had stashed a gel and water. The run felt great for the most of it. At about 16km I started to get a bit bored and thought sod it, I might as well speed up and get this over with. As it turns out, my last four kilometre splits were each 10-15 seconds faster than the previous one. This bodes well for October 28th!
Running challenge
1 Oct: In bed, dying
2 Oct: Recovering from near death
3 Oct 4.6km, realise am still suffering the effects of near-death experience. Yoga too.
4 Oct: 5.78km
5 Oct: rest
6 Oct: yoga
7 Oct: hungover +gardening
8 Oct: 20.02km and now to taper
4.6 of 120km for September.

Thanks Kevin. He bought a pair of Reebok float ride run fast's. They sound like a decent race/speed work shoe. He'll still needs a good training shoe. He said may reconsider buying pair of the Saucony's, he thought they seemed a little inexpensive, maybe cheep and not a good marathon shoe.1 -

@Tramboman You may never run as fast as another runner that you compare yourself to. However, you should become able to run faster than you do today. Common wisdom is that a new runner gets faster for the first 5 or 10 years of running, regardless of what age he starts running.
For reference, today I ran 6K of cross country on grass with typical cross country hills, some wet spots for poor push-off, and a couple of asphalt road crossings to slow me down because I'm wearing spikes. I deliberately slowed down 3 times in recognition of post-marathon aches asking me not to pound so hard. Even with those slow downs, my average pace was faster than my first road 5K, 7 years ago at age 55. That road 5K was a fast, flat course all on asphalt with few turns, designed to produce good times. In between then and now, my range, speed, and endurance have all improved. Oh, yeah . . . I'm about 10 pounds lighter today than I was when I ran that first 5K. That will have an impact, but the training and miles running are bigger factors.5 -
Oh @AlphaHowls, it hurt just reading your post! You have to be the toughest, strongest person I know. You are amazing!3
-
@rheddmobile Congrats to you and hubby!
@AlphaHowls Owwie! Worst I have done was slid on a pine tree root and still did 4 more miles in boots and utes. 2 more hours /bow.
@zdyb23456 Awesome HM time!
Nice race @MobyCarp !
Rest day with travel back to home for me today. Gonna try to find a suitable hill tomorrow for some hill repeats.4 -
Will I ever log my runs the day they happen anymore? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Oh well. Run yesterday was good, aside from some mild stomach cramps. Will try to get my run in tomorrow even though we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving and I won't have the energy/willpower to run after dinner like I like to. Also, 1/5 of the way to my goal. Yay!
Edit: Ticker isn't letting me update the distance so I've run 10km/50km.7
