October 2018 Monthly Running Challenge

Completed week 12 day 1 of c210k today. I’d have to say it was my best run so far, the temperature was perfect and I didn’t feel like dying even once! It was also my first run in the rain. Thanks to everyone that recommended rain running, it was amazing! I wore a baseball cap to keep the rain out of my face as someone on here previously advised. Must say, I’m a huge fan of running in the rain now.

That is fantastic, @amirahdaboss !
@garygse now you've got me wanting to get tested. I've resisted for a while but the engineer in me wants to geek out on the numbers. I think I have a good idea what my LT HR is based on experience and the Jack Daniels tables (which agree) but I'd really like to confirm that and get the rest of the data6 -
@amirahdaboss Bravo and yay!!!I'm setting up a new goal for the rest of the month. I found it difficult to concentrate these last 2 weeks with school and other responsibilities.
@rg4517rg Hi! I came across your post and thought I'd give you a reply/notification to see how you're doing.
Sing out if you have any struggles or successes.
I'm sure everyone here could give advice on balancing school/work/responsibilities with running. Best wishes!4 -
@workaholic_nurse Yeah, I noticed that and was going to comment on it with this post, but saw you corrected yourself.
Ran 15 miles at MP this morning...the temps were in the low 50s with a little rain at first, but the rain then stopped and held off for the rest of the run. Average pace for the entire run, including warm-up, was 7:30, so I pretty much hit the mark.
Yesterday was a tough session getting tested (@Elise4270 it was at Platri in The Colony, so not the place where you went). After a warm-up run of 10 minutes, the first test was the VO2Max test. The face mask was weird at first, my breathing sounded like Darth Vader, and when I tried to talk, I sounded like Kenny from South Park. We started by getting my HR to 130...they wanted it within 1 bpm as much as possible, and then from there we slowly increased the workout so that my HR went up in increments of 5 bpm, up to either 185 or 190 (I forget which...by that point I know I was running a 5:00 pace). Trying to keep your HR within 1 bpm of target, especially at the higher end of the test, is actually quite a challenge in and of itself.
Then after a cool down, the mask came off (ahh, I can breathe again) and it was time to do the Lactate Threshold test. She took a blood lactate reading, and had me maintain 145 bpm for 5 minutes before taking another blood lactate reading. This continued in increments of 5 (up to 175 bpm), with each target being held for 5 minutes before a blood lactate reading was taken. By the end, my finger felt like a pin cushion...but that's ok, at least I wasn't wearing that darned mask (the bridge of my nose is bruised because of that thing!).
So now I have to wait for the analysis to be performed, which she said could take a couple of days, but she did have my VO2Max result: 64.
She also asked me if I'd ever been coached at any time; when I said no, she was surprised and said my running form was actually excellent. I have to credit @Stoshew71 there for his pieces of advice (string from top of head, and headlamps on the hips and nipples) as that really helped me focus on establishing good form and technique when I initially started out running.

Today's notes – It rained on and off all day. With one thing and another, I didn't get out to run in the sunshine. I decided to scope out the other group run this evening, across town from the one that had its last Wednesday a week ago. I hadn't gone to this one because this group only does 3 miles on Wednesday evening, and I always want more distance. But I figured if I went, that would get me started and I could add a mile out and back to get 5.
Got there, and it wasn't raining. Till it was again, when I was inside the store and dry. Ran into an old running mentor, which was not totally unexpected in that venue. We got chatting. He's had his struggles, including a DNF at Ironman Boulder and a recent back issue. Am I OK with running 8:30. Sure, it won't hurt me to slow down.
So we set set out, and now it's not raining. Wait the typical long time for that first awful stoplight, then start running the assigned loop. I need Jim because there are a couple turns I might not find the first time on my own; before the first of these, I end up asking him, "Are you sure you want to be running a 7 minute mile? I can do it, but I probably shouldn't today." So we slow down. He shows me the loop. It's pleasant, with an interesting hill in the second half. Get back near the corner of the stoplight, and I tell him I'll just go run the loop again to get enough miles.
Ran the loop the second time on feel, and it felt pretty good. Got back to the light, and of course it was against me. Crossed halfway, ran on the median till traffic let me cross the other way, went around the block to get back . . . and saw 5.96 at the store. Just like every other runner, I ran an OCD loop in the parking lot.
The store was empty when I got back, presumably because the regulars went out for a beer afterward. I grabbed some water, used the facilities, and headed home. Post-run analysis shows that Jim and I were mostly running 7:30 miles on that first loop, and I pretty much continued in that same groove the second time past. Garmin has the average pace as 7:45, Strava strips out non-moving time and has it as 7:39. So much for Jim being hurt and needing to run slow.
Maybe next week I'll manage my Wednesday better and get out to run in the daylight. But it's nice to know that if I have trouble getting out solo, I can lean on this group for a short starter run.

@garygse 64? You mean 46? Hahaha! Fitter than a fiddle I'd say!
Hmm wonder if @seanevan10 is still lurking here, or pop in for a visit? I think she knows the lady that owns/runs that play-tri... Maybe we could have begged for a discount.
I didn't know playtri did the testing. I've not made ot out there yet. I'd be embarrassed to do my LT, I'd probably pass the erff out. I had the same vader mask for my RMR. Sitting still for 5 minutes was more my speed. 😉
@7lenny7 my Garmin says my VO2 max is 44-46. I feel like im suckin' wind all the time.
I still haven't run since the race. I'm almost done sulking. Maybe tomorrow I'll get on my bike/trainer.
I got race photos. They're not as horrible as all the ones previously, but I'm seeing my hip drop in a few. Sure i was hurt, but yesch... I gotta fix that! So I've worked all day trying to recruit my glutes.
Good thing my coworkers dont think twice then i stand on one foot like a Kung Fu flamingo several times a day. Hmm... Is it odd they accept my odd behavior? Am i that odd? (Yes, I'm probably that odd). (Dh has called me autistic twice in the last week. Yes I looked it up. He could be right. So, eh... I might follow up on seeing someone, just to get an "I'm normal/special" in writing. Haha! 😳).6 -
OK, I'm honing the details of the 24 Hour Run for Dennis.
I want to write a blog post, a post for Success Stories and/or send something to MFP HQ, because I think this is a significant MFP thing we did. I'd like to have a good summary to send to Dennis' family (I sent his son a link to this thread when it was starting but something more succinct and shareable would be nice).
Here's what I've got so far (pardon my inability to convert some runs below to the time you ran in the list):

Thought I’d say hello since I haven’t been active much tho I wasn’t much before. Since I haven’t really been able to run lately I figured today would be a good day cuz it’s been about a week since I’ve tried to stay off of my knee and because PT said I don’t have stop running but he would recommend it, ran towards the end of the cul-de-sac and my knee was like F that! Turns out my right knee is literally scraping bone on bone and my left has a nice build up of fluid. He tried to show me the proper way to get out of bed and when I attempted I pinched a nerve in my hip and I rolled off the table like a marble, so fast no one saw it coming. Lol.
I’m super bummed but my body is falling apart on me but that’s not gonna stop me. Going to look at a stationary bike, I love my reformer but I don’t feel like its really doing much.
Hope all is well. I’d read back through and comment but then my screen time would say I’m up 75% from previous weeks10 -
@Orphia I didn’t have a slot, but I ran alongside for Dennis at 4:00 pm gmt: 1.94 miles, 30 mins ❤️ Thanks to you and Elise for organizing it. Lovely and amazing.6
-
Yes a big THANKS to @orphia and @elise4270! I didn't run in my slot but I did run a bit in the rain on Saturday for Dennis and ok for myself too because well - rain...
@amirahdaboss - isn't rain running so much fun? I love it!
@garygse - that is an amazing V02Max! The last time I had a stress test (with the dye) they kept cranking up the speed and incline trying to get my HR to 150. It never got there... I would be interested to see what mine it - I am sure no where near 64 or even in the 50's but I would love to see all the data!
I called the ortho office and couldn't get into see my doctor (or any of them) until the middle of November! Called my PCP and she has no appointments until January! I told the assistant that I didn't know what else to do... I hurt but it isn't an emergency (although not being able to run technically is an emergency to me) and we are leaving for FL on the 29th and how am I going to do all that walking... (and I can't run!!). She is going to try to fit my in on Friday (yay!) and will call me back with an appointment. For now I am keeping the ortho appointment in November just in case.7 -
@Orphia thanks for taking that on - I was hoping at some time we could try and confirm that we did it!
I didn’t get the full two hours as I hadn’t run for a while (and my feet are telling me I shouldn’t have...). I knew @Scott6255 was overlapping with me
My stats - started at hour 15 (11am GMT) run time 1hr 15minutes. 5.5miles2 -
@Orphia that's really great of you that you want to create a summary from everyone's runs!
I'm not sure which info you want. My timeslot is correct.
16.47km in 2:02 hours.
The Strava activity: https://www.strava.com/activities/1903790230
I don't know if everyone tracked their run with Strava or Garmin- if yes, maybe we could combine the gpx files into a world map?

10 km Pats Creek up - Bush Trail down 232m elevation.
Struggled going up the hill - but I knew that I had a great reward - the bush trail back to the bottom.
It was covered in autumn leaves which made footing interesting as you couldn't see all the little dips or roots. Some of the low spots were slippery or down right wet and muddy. So much fun.
On the descent I practiced the High Cadence - short steps - lean down the hill and paddle hard.
There were a couple really steep pitch's ( 10 - 20% ) and lots of intermediate rolling fun. I was cutting it close as when I was at the top of the hill dropping over the bank for the descent ( 7.4km ) the sun went down so the last 2.6 km were in twilight- which at this time of year doesn't last long. Made it with 5-10 minutes to spare.
21C today so shorts and t-shirt - which means that my legs and arms have lots of Tree Whip marks and a few rose bush thorns in my shins

Thanks Nikki and girlinahat, I've updated my list with your slot/distances. (I won't post it again to save tagging everyone again.)
A world map sounds awesome!! Great idea! I don't know how to do that, but I'm sure I could look it up.
Bit hesitant about taking on too much data at present as I'm very busy the next 2 days, but thinking as I type, I can go back in the thread like I did today..4 -

@Orphia Well everyone knows that I had a " Time Zone Translation Error " ( dufus moment ) but I did put in a HM distance for Dennis - really wanted to get the 26.2 km for the symbolic 26.2 but ran out of gas. Not sure how you would want to portray it - but as you can tell I am fine poking a little fun at myself and feel free to poke a little fun at me in the blog or post to MFP HQ.
As others have said A big thanks to @Elise4270 and @Orphia_nikkiwolf_ wrote: »@Orphia that's really great of you that you want to create a summary from everyone's runs!

@_nikkiwolf_ What a brilliant idea. My strava link https://www.strava.com/activities/1901261929
I sent a query to Strava about this concept. After reviewing the options in Strava a Group would not work as it would load all runs from our Strava profiles, when we only want a very specific subset.1 -
@PastorVincent Sure, it was $150 for the VO2Max test, and $100 for the LT test. The LT test results give HR zone recommendations, and the VO2Max test gives all the calories/carbs/fat per hour breakdowns. I'll definitely pay for the LT test periodically to ensure I know the HR to keep training at as well as to see how training is going in general, but the other test I may do maybe once a year or so.1

I don't know if it works to quote a post from another thread, but I saw this over in the group page and thought I'd share. Might be nice to use for the write-up, @OrphiaKeepRunningFatboy wrote: »A majority of my medals I donate to Medals4Mettle.
But I’ve kept these as I work through 50 states.
ETA: I think it worked!12 -
@garygse - those lab tests are so interesting! I too geek out over all the data. Those are elite type numbers sir! I bow down to you.
Thanks @Orphia and @Elise4270 for formalizing the Run for Dennis relay data.2 -
@Orphia i dont know if it's possible, but i was thinking a strava badge to all those that ran in the mfp challenge group during the 26+ hour event.
@polskagirl01 seriously LOVE that you grabbed that post from Dennis! I feel a little motivation creeping back into my soul. 😍😥4 -
I have a savings of 40$ on 100$ purchase. I dont plan on using it. It may be a one time coupon. Figure someone might be able to use it.
Link embedded in the email. Doubt it matter as long as you have the discount code.

@Orphia I overlapped with @MegaMooseEsq from 21:15 to 21:45 GMT with my own rogue hobbling run.1
-
@Orphia - my time slot is correct - thanks for all the hard work. Beautiful and meaningful idea.
This is rather morbid - but I have this secret thought that someday when I'm gone, my grandkids will look at my map and my medals and recreate a couple runs together in my memory. I love the idea that I just might inspire another generation to be active. My mom was a huge baseball fan (Tigers). For the first few years after she died several of us would meet at different ballparks across the country to watch the Tigers play. Every time I'd beat myself up wondering why we didn't do that while she was alive.
I think I've become a whiner instead of a runner. I ran 5 miles Monday - it felt glorious and I could have gone further if not for the "to-do" list. Got up early to run yesterday but just walked the dog instead. This morning I just couldn't muster the energy to get dressed and go. Seems like my excuses are out-numbering my desire right now. And I really want to train hard for Sedona. Schedule is a bit overwhelming right now so a good run would definitely help. I just hate that at 6:00 am it's still dark. Love the cool weather - not loving the dark.
June goal - 44/44
July goal - 52/52
August goal - 55/57 miles
Sept goal - 72/60 miles
Oct goal - 25/60 miles
Sept. 30 - Wineglass Half Marathon; Corning, NY
October 7 - Viking Dash Half Marathon; Toledo, OH
February 2 - Sedona Half10 -
10/1 - lifted
10/2 - 2.4 miles - W7D1 of C25k. Ran for 25 minutes straight :-o
10/4 - lifted
10/5- 2.5 miles - W7D2.
10/6- lifted/went on "hike" (with 2 year old, we didn't get far), rode bikes - good day
10/8-lifted
10/9-torrential downpour, didn't get to run plus my basement flooded, woopee
10/10-lifted
10/11- 2.2 miles W7D3
10/12- lifted
10/13- 2.4 miles W8D1 ran for 28 minutes straight :-o again
10/15- lifted
10/16- 2.4 miles W8D2 another 28 minutes straight, woo hooo
10/17-well I was supposed to lift
10/18- 2.6 miles W8D3
I finished the program! Yay! 30 minutes of running but as you can see I did NOT run 5K. I'm a half mile short! According to Strava my avg pace is like 11:30 min/mile. So I suppose that's my new goal. I'll add minutes on until I get there.
Sometimes I stop and think about it, like I just ran 2.6 miles straight. I'm not sure if I've ever done that before in my life. Wow. Go me.18 -

The Strava activity: https://www.strava.com/activities/1903790230
I don't know if everyone tracked their run with Strava or Garmin- if yes, maybe we could combine the gpx files into a world map?
@_nikkiwolf_ What a brilliant idea. My strava link https://www.strava.com/activities/1901261929
I sent a query to Strava about this concept. After reviewing the options in Strava a Group would not work as it would load all runs from our Strava profiles, when we only want a very specific subset.
@_nikkiwolf_ @Orphia I sent the request into Strava with the link to nikki's data she provided and my data with the hope that Strava would have a solution. I looked at the Group's and Event's options they had but didn't think either would work as they would grab all the data for an individual which meant some false extra data from adjacent days activities. Like the MFP group where it shows a summary for the whole week - There might be a way to put a narrow time zone window or just link the individual files that I didn't see.
"Strava ticket #1183613 Combine multiple Strava Activities from all over the world for a single event"
@polskagirl01 That was a great post of the Map and Medals for the 50 states.
I noticed the one medal with the Canadian maple Leaf on the Ribbon.5 -
Thanks @Elise4270 and @Orphia for putting this together and summarizing.
For reference, my Strava link to the activity is below
https://www.strava.com/activities/1904470521
note that I ended up having to run earlier than scheduled so I ended up running at 8:00 Central/13:00 GMT for an hour as I had a conflict.3 -
@Orphia I believe my spot is correct. If @scott6255 and @elise4270 are correct then I am too. I also have my run on Strava, but I don't know how to share the link.
No run yet for me today. I am planning to run today at lunch or after work. It was still raining this morning when I got up and we should have some clearer weather this afternoon. Even if it is a little rainy this afternoon it will be easier for me to run during daylight when it is raining and not as cold than to run 6 am when it is cold and dark.2 -
5 easy miles with Kody last night. I had planned on 6 but started getting some soreness on the ball of my right foot, leftover from my HM last weekend so I cut it a bit short. Two days of rest until my 12 hour race.
