Books? When I downsized and moved into my condo, I gave away almost 400 hardcover books to the Salvation Army. I love books. I love to read. My hubby built bookcases into the two walls next to our family room fireplace. They were completely filled. I had books crammed into other shelves and corners and finally hubby told me if I continued to accumulate books, he would have to move out because there wouldn't be room for him!
So, I bought a Kindle. I can't tell you how many books I have on my Kindle. Before hubby made his journey to Heaven, I bought him a Kindle and he enjoyed reading books, too. Two of his favorites were 90 Minutes in Heaven and the first book Tim Tebow wrote.
As for me, I don't have any one favorite book except for the Bible. The other two that remain sharp in my mind are Black Beauty and Gone with the Wind.
And now, after all this talk about books, I'm heading off to fix myself dinner followed by a comfy snuggling in my recliner with a cat in my lap and my Kindle!

Grandmallie - so sorry for your loss! It is hard. I just try to allow myself to grieve when the emotions hit me - you are right to concentrate on the sweet memories.
Thanks Michele! Jo!
Sharon - it was. I recently found an article my dad wrote - with mom's help - about that day - it is funny (he says his service rifle got killed) and terrifying at the same time. I had no idea that this article was written and found it quite by accident. I could hear his voice in the story.
Elizabeth - I feel a research study in your question!! Sorry - just in the midst of being the adviser for 5 student projects!! lol
Carol - I teach in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program - just started in August.
So...I'm setting my goal each month - 5 lbs. As of today - on the 8th of the month - I have met 82% of my goal!! Trick will be to maintain for the entire month and then loss another 5 lbs in December.
Favorite author: Carl Haisson - he has Florida down pat - lived there all my life until just recently - he makes me laugh!! As a child - I started early - Loved the Cherry Ames serious about a nurse...which I knew I wanted to be since I was 2 years old! Then, I moved onto the James Michener novels - loved them
Wishing everyone great success

Lanette: It sounds like you’re making great strides in getting warm and cozy. Nice!
Heather: I hope the burglars are at home watching TV today and your home is not disturbed.
Carol in GA & Lisa: In elementary school I fell in love with a series of books called Ginny & Geneva, by Catherine Wooley. I see they’re still available on amazon. I have good memories of enjoying & reading those books in grade school. I also loved Little Women and have a very old edition in my bookcase. It was given to my Auntie Irene by her Aunt Vera and Uncle Chester for Christmas, 1908, one hundred and ten years ago. My mom wasn’t born yet. Auntie Irene gave it to me because I loved to read. I consider it a family treasure. It was originally published in 1868 according to Siri. I couldn't find a publication date inside the book.
The townhouse across the sidewalk from us is being worked on by the carpenters that installed our new windows. They found lots of dry rot under the neighbor’s siding and have a major job underway to get the house fully repaired. We were lucky and had no dry rot to deal with other than some decay that was isolated to the inside of one of the windows we had replaced. We had work done several years ago, and that work evidently was a huge help for our home’s structural integrity now. Yay!!!
Katla, who is counting her blessings.

Love the gratitude calendar! It is fun to read the different things people are grateful for. My favorite book as a child was probably Black Beauty but I was a voracious reader. Seems I don't read quite so much now with lots of outside work to do. My favorite adult book I think is Love Mercy by Earlene Fowler. I like her other books too, the Benni Harper mysteries and the two in the Saddlemaker series. Also a favorite is The Lady by Anne McCaffrey.
Lanette - Sounds like that fan is making your wood stove more efficient. We have an area of our barn that is full of firewood but we don't have a fireplace or wood stove. One of these days we may be able to get rid of it.
Heather - So nice to be able to help with the grands without going a long way. Good luck with the continuing move in.
Barbie - Hope the hiccup in your remodeling is resolved soon.
DH's biopsy came back as suspicious for cancer not confirming as expected. The doctor still believes it is definitely cancer so he will begin chemo on Nov 19.

The contractor went home before lunch and won't be back until next week when the necessary people and materials will be available for the next part of the project. Jake wanted to celebrate his last chemo treatment (after 18 weeks in a row) by bringing flowers and a card to the nurses at the cancer center and then going out to lunch at our favorite Chinese restaurant.
Yesterday while waiting for Jake at the eye doctor, I was thumbing through an old issue of the New Yorker magazine (I love the cartoons) and found a reference to "Eloise" by Kay Thompson and remembered the books so fondly that I requested them from the library and checked them out today. What a delight that brought me back to my childhood.
Sue, I hope your husband gets good results from his chemo.
I read a lot but rather than having shelves full of books, I make use of Paperback Swap online, and our local public library. I get audio books and Kindle books from the library that I read and return.
Today I danced the entire two hour line dance class. I am feeling very hopeful that I will soon be teaching my beginner class again.

I hate that I just skipped ten pages! I had no idea how fast this group moves. The site was having some glitches a couple days ago, then I got sick--sorta. I had this "brilliant" idea to clean and sanitize my bathroom. So, I sprayed the shower with bleach cleaner, poured straight bleach into the toilet, and decided to let it all sit to do it's thing. I'd already stripped down to my skivvies, since I tend to ruin clothes whenever I use this nasty chemical. The bad decision was to take a bath while I waited for the mold and mildew to disappear. I filled the tub, and forgot to turn on the vents. I don't mind the smell of bleach, but it burned my throat so bad I lost my voice for three days, and it still feels raw. It's getting better, and I've got a scheduled doctor appointment next week. I definitely learned never to do that again!
In four days I turn 53! I am so grateful that I'm finally taking care of my health and weight. Between August 6 and November 6, I lost exactly 50 pounds!! I can attest that using this site works. There's still no magic way to lose the weight, but being conscious and vigilant every day is a big part of the battle.
Sharon near Seattle, I love your long posts. I didn't have a doctor when I started losing weight, so there was no one to approve or disapprove. My new doc seems to approve of all I'm doing to reach my goals. I'm not losing as fast as I was in the beginning, so I'm not worried it's too fast. Health is the goal, not a number.
How do you regulars keep a running list of responses? I tried, but going back a page lost what I'd written. I'm sure there's a way; I just haven't figured it out yet.
Tuesday I got a new clothes dryer--yay! My old one was rigged up to start, and the heat sensor stopped working and clothes got so hot it was a fire hazard. The new 8.8 Maytag is gigantic! My 22 year-old daughter sat in the drum, and if she pulled her legs in she would have fit! (Mean Mom would have shut the door, and taken her picture through the little window.) She and hubs have been following the same diet plan, and she's lost 15 pounds herself. She's still able to wear clothes from middle school, so she's never had a weight problem. I was surprised that she weighed 160 before, but she's taller than I am. My DH has lost weight too. He's five pounds from his goal now. He's 6'4" and just one size up from when we met 30 years ago--and he was a beanpole back then.
I'm proud of something I accomplished tonight. I made orange fluff salad, and figured the calories per serving. There's probably a simple app somewhere to do the calculations, but I did it all the old-fashioned way. I figured all the calories for the ingredients, divided by half cup servings, and came up with 70-75 calories, since I had to round a bit. I could/should have shaved some calories by using sugar free jello, but my DFIL loves the stuff, but doesn't like artificial sweetener. (I won't tell him I use half real and half artificial.)
My in-laws are staying with us for a few months. They sold their house a couple months ago, and my DMIL just had shoulder replacement surgery. They're saving a bit of money living with us, and we get to repay the favor, since we lived with them for a year while our house was being built. They're the best in-laws I could ask for, and we get along well. After the shoulder recovery, they'll likely look for another house.
It's cold here in Texas, so I have an excuse not to ride my bicycle. I've been doing more shopping. Not to buy stuff, but to walk around the stores pushing a cart. I need to get serious about my exercise. I miss my dance aerobics back in NC.
This is too long, sorry for the overload.

Sighs.... I miss my Owain. We recd a text saying he got there, so now I have to get used to not hearing from him. He most likely doesn't have a phone, hasn't designated a Wi-Fi spot, and just acclimating to the time change this week. I have to give him time. I have to give him time to miss me. I have yet to cry. I am on a Navy Moms support group so that's helped a lot. My heart aches and I suppose that will lesson with time. I exercised this week, so that was good.👍

Did Jari Love’s Ripped and Chiseled DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to take the water class.
Supposed to volunteer at the Green Room today. Tonight I’d like to go to the local (cheap) movie theater to see “First Man”.
Trucker – isn’t the saying “life’s always greener over the septic tank”? Wonder why that song has you putting lime down?
Sarah – you reminded me of when my kids were little and played soccer. You’d see the ball go down the field and then this mass of children would follow the ball. I’m so sorry you had such a difficult childhood
Sharon – the reason your husband came in second reminded me of how my father didn’t like my husband when we were dating. What was wrong with him? Well, for one thing he wasn’t Polish, plus he had long hair, and sin of all sins he wasn’t Catholic. My grandmother just kept saying to my father “leave him alone, he has good manners”. We’ve been married 40 years!
Marilyn – (((HUGS)))
Margaret – sending good thoughts your way
Barbie – how thoughtful of Jake to invite your neighbors to Thanksgiving.
Volunteered at the Green Room then went to Dollar General. They have these Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars on sale BOGO so I got some for Toys for Tots
Went to see the movie “First Man”. I didn’t expect it to end when it did. The movie was OK, I was just surprised to see that in FL in July, his wife was wearing long sleeves. You saw leaves but didn’t see any palm trees, this is FL!
Barbie – knowing you, you’ll be back to teaching in no time at all.
Cari – I keep a Word document open, write down my responses, and then cut & paste the whole thing. You can use the recipe app here to figure out the calories. How long have you been in TX?

I printed out the gratitude calendar--then lost it. I just printed another one.
1. Smell: Heating elements. My dryer, fireplace, and furnace give off an odor. It's not exactly pleasant, but it's a reminder that I'm spoiled, and with cold weather we can have heat at the touch of a button.
2. Technology: My computer is my connection to the rest of the world. facebook connects me to family and friends, and all the wonders of the web are at my fingertips.
3. Color: The white, yellow, apricot, and pink of my Peace roses. They're still blooming, and each one seems to be a different color combination.
4. Food: I can't name just one. I love all those go-to foods that work on my diet. I especially love my Dannon light Greek yogurt. Roasted butternut and acorn squash easily beats out chips and candy, and soy milk is replacing my milk addiction.
5. Sound: Music. I love so many kinds of music. I'm hard of hearing, and I don't ever want to lose that.
6. Nature: I love the renewal of the seasons. The cycle of growth, harvest, and near-dead is a rhythm of life.
7. Memory: Yesterday I had choir practice at church. I met a new member, and she mentioned that her last choir director was a "taskmaster." I knew what she meant, because my last church had a director who was a perfectionist. I miss that. I love working hard to perfect a piece, and feeling confident when we present it. I just haven't felt that here. They're more relaxed and laid-back, and do simpler music.
8. Book: I've always been a reader, and books took me so many places. I could name dozens of books. I loved The Shack by William Young. I love the Xanth series by Piers Anthony. Up until A Spell for Chameleon, I never knew fantasy existed. I was a poor kid in Ohio, and getting my reading fix meant wandering the library, and shopping at yard sales. Until then, I'd read mostly Harlequin romances and school books. Shortly after I discovered Stephen King, and fell in love with everything he wrote. (Not so much the movies.) Lately I've been writing, and haven't had as much time to read. I've written four novels I hope to publish someday.1 -
We had a nice fire tonight in the fireplace and the rain was hitting the skylights, so it was a pleasant evening with my DH!
I went to lunch with a woman from our Sunday school class.
I had grilled cheese sandwich and a delicious mug of pumpkin soup. It was really good!
She seemed like she needs a friend and someone to talk to. Her husband of 35 years has dementia and in a wheelchair. They came from Tampa and don’t know many people and have been in Hot Springs as long as us. I was surprised to hear of her story of not having a family except her husband. She is half Korean and she was put in an orphanage in Korea when born but her father, US military, found her and brought her home.
My daughter in Panama City had help getting fencing panels back up so she can get her dogs home. She’s back in a condo at the beach on the 15th floor. The air in the house is not good and we’re making her sick. The kids’ school is opened now. The grandkids are happy about that!
The hurricane wiped out everything. All the trees are gone. The historical old mansions along St Andrews Bay are still there, but the old oaks with the Spanish moss are not. The pines are snapped off like toothpicks. Eventually the yards will be replanted and trees replaced and the people will still be there!
Memories My grandparents, my parents are now gone. I think of them a lot.
I think about growing up in San Diego and swimming at the beach. The big waves pounding me in the sand and turning me around like a washing machine! I would hold my breath and see the sunlight and just hope I would make it back up to catch a breath!!
I was always swimming as a kid and I still love to swim!
Favorite Book as a child I liked Heidi, Black Beauty, but I like studying the Bible the most.
Have a great Friday!!

Michele- thanks. You must have also had great fun watching soccer I can picture that!
My favorite book was one we had to read at school. That was then, This is now. It was made into a movie. Young men in bad home situations and choices that forever changed their adult lives.
I'm exercising daily. I started swinging a Kettle bell. Anyone here have advice on that? My calories are usually under my daily 1230 and exercise. I saved my calories all day because we went to a Hamburger cookout.

Hi all. Sitting in the park playground while DH plays with Bea.
It was a real achievement to get the older two to school. Bea ran along beside the buggy as it was loaded with coats, book bags, violin, spare things for Bea etc.
Edie was very helpful, telling us what everyone had for breakfast etc and how to do hair.
Phew! Someone else is taking them to tennis after school.
Just got Bea for the rest of the day. Then the big bedtime ritual.
Much love, Heather UK XXXXXX5 -
My sister-in-law posted this and I thought it was good ...
So ...
Nov 1 - my roses.
Nov 2 - social media and staying connected with family and friends.
Nov 3 - blue. The blue of the mouth of the river/bay/start of the ocean out my window. The blue of the sky. My new blue sleeping top that was nice and comfy last night.
Nov 4 - food ... cheese. I ate a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches when my husband was in hospital. They were my comfort food. Also cheese has calcium which I think I need. Unfortunately, cheese does tend to be a bit high in calories so I shouldn't eat too much of it. But anything cheese-y is comforting.
Nov 5 - sound. I like listening to the waves and the birds, but I think the sound I'm most grateful for today is my husband's voice. Just the fact that we can talk to each other again.
Nov 6 - "What in nature are you grateful for?" ... That's hard to narrow down to one thing. Oxford dictionary describes nature as "the phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth". I am grateful for all of it. I find that getting out into any sort of nature helps to relieve stress.
Nov 7 - "What memory are you grateful for?" ... Another one with so many choices!!! Recently, I've been grateful for two memories. 1) June 2017 ... my husband and I had a wonderful visit to Canada and did several things to make great memories ... hiking, cycling, visiting my family. I clung onto those memories during the months he was in hospital. 2) When I was 9 years old, my family moved away from where my grandmother lived. One of of the last days there, my grandmother took me to her window and showed me a full moon outside. She told me that on every full moon, we could both look at it and know that even though we were far apart, we were both looking at the same moon. That's a memory which has stuck with me all these years, and every time I see a full moon, I think of my grandmother. She's 97 years old ... but not doing so well ... so I've been thinking of her a lot. And I've also been very glad that my husband and I were able to see her when we visited Canada in June 2017.
Nov 8 - "What book are you most grateful for?" That's easy ... The Bible.
I've enjoyed reading all your memories.
Love the discussion about books!
Nov 9 - "What place are you most grateful for?" This is not an easy one for me because I don't have the sense of "home" that many people have. I've moved too much for that.
So ... I've had to give this one some thought.
What place?
Well ...
I'm grateful for our current house. It's comfortable enough. It's not very big so it's fairly easy to manage. And it has a great garden which my husband has been able to work in since returning home from his accident. It is also close to a couple beaches, which is nice.

Good Morning Ladies~
long day yesterday and I was in bed early....and slept very well for a change..
I have never had money to invest and when I was married to Tom he did all that.. so yesterday I went and spoke to a investment specialist at my credit union and am fairly confident with her help my money will make me money...
hoping that if and when I retire will have what I need... seeing what my dad went through was very hard, and having to do a reverse mortgage to survive in his last years was what he needed to do...but I hope not for me..
today Mary is off So I am working 7;30-5 today...
I am at the point now that I am tired of being fat.. I am going to start with the food I eat and then slowly get back to going to the gym.. I want to live a long time... so have to make changes...5 -
The Y and Z swapped places on my iphone. Was driving me nutz. Finally googled it. I'd hit the keyboard language icon by mistake. Easy fix, silly me!
7: memories of the every-other-year road trips from California to St. Louis and Kansas City to visit relatives. Mama and Papa routed us through a different national park or wonder each time. Grand canyon, Yellowstone, Royal Gorge... yet some of my fondest memories are of the most uncomfortable times. Back in before A/C Papa miscalculated and we ended up, going through the desert mid-day. The dog and I thought we were going to die, but were saved by a thunderstorm just outside Flagstaff at sunset.
8: To Build a Land by Sally Watson then Exodus by Leon Uris. As an even younger child also loved Champion Dog Prince Tom. As an adult I re-read the Susan Conant and Charlotte MacLeod mysteries when I'm feeling low.
Sharon and Lanette, we are at about 600ft elevation too. Got a couple of dustings our first winter. So long as I never have to walk on ice again, I'm content!
Lisa Brava for your decision not to put of surgery any more, even for all staff meetings. Brava!
Margaret fingers X'd.
Karen in VA love Michener's The Source, thanks for the reminder. Time to re-read.
Barbie you've found so much positive even in the midst of chaos. Inspiring!
NYKaren I didn't find the Narnia series until I was a page in the Children's Library, but OH the magic of pushing through coats in a wardrobe and coming out into the forest!!! Likewise MacDonald's Princess and the Goblin, Princess and Curdie
Lanette could you send a link for the stovetop fan? Just discovered Jan Karon this year and blazed through the entire series. Good stuff.
Tracey I used to sleep with my clothes in the sleeping bag at Campfire Girls camp because it was sooo chilly in the morning. One of my favorite Yosemite trip memories was the time the snow knocked out power to the cabin. When we woke up there was ice on the insides of the windows. My BFF's mom opened up her suitcase and said "now what ELSE can we put on?" She was very comic and we warmed up by laughing.
Lisa Robert Heinlein juveniles! Ah the golden age (13 yrs) of Science Fiction! RAH is a lifelong fave.
Did second SWSY this am (yay me!) Line dance class cancelled tonight as nearly half couldn't come. Had to do two Leslie Sansomes to just make minimum steps and now I'm pooped!

Good morning all! Happy Friday! I haven't written much about my daycare this week. Not a really exciting week. They DID have fun on Tuesday, when we talked about elections and leaders and voting. We voted on everything important that day, here at Miss Kelly's daycare. (paint or draw?, puzzles or magnets?, which direction to walk?, salad or peas for lunch?, peaches or melon for lunch?, which songs to sing?, which books to read?). I had some of those "Future Voter" stickers for them and most of them ended up going to the polls with mom and dad after leaving here. On Wednesday we made cards for the vets and talked about veterans/soldiers and our freedoms. The kids painted the cards and I wrote what "freedom" each kid wanted to thank the veterans for. For instance Grace was thankful for being able to wear sparkly skirts. Jackson was thankful for being able to go and vote with his dad, Harrison was thankful for our music that we listen to... One of the mamas delivered the cards (there were 12 of them) to the two different "halls" we have in town. Yesterday was S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. day and we did some science experiments. (dancing spaghetti, volcanoes, and lava lamps) It has been more of a learning week. I don't have a lot planned for today, as Trentin will be joining us at lunchtime and the kids ADORE him! So...some free play in the afternoon schedule. It is snowing this morning! So we will take a walk this morning and enjoy the snow coming down. and YES! I woke up, saw the snow coming down and went out in the driveway (5:30am) and did some spinning in the snowflakes! One of the early runners ran by in the dark. I saw his head lamp but couldn't see him and I heard a voice call out "Is Miss Kelly having fun in the snow?!" Of course I am!
#9 What place am I most grateful for? There are two. One is my aunt's farm up north. My aunt and uncle have passed, but my cousin still lives there. It is about 2 1/2 hours from my home; but there is a certain curve on a road called Esch Road, that my body relaxes, my breathing slows and my brain and heart say "I'm home." It affects my hubby the same way even though he didn't experience the family farm as a child (only as a spouse of the child, who brought their children to this special place). Maybe he is responding to my own body's reaction? The other place is actually my own bed, when my hubby is laying beside me. To explain, we have an uncomfortable bed. While I still manage to pop out of bed "like a daisy" (according to Tim), his back can't handle the lack of support, so a couple of years ago, he began sleeping in his office. BUT, we do have those nights when he is there beside me, and I love having him there. Snores and all.
Katla- You do know that Little Women was first published in 1868??? You could have a first edition; or at the very least a very early edition!
Did I mention that it is snowing!!Eeeek! So exciting!
Heather- lol I can just see your busy little Bea bobbing along beside the stroller on the way to school! I can't tell you how happy I am to hear of your settling into Hove and being nearer the kids!
New girls- You can take notes on Word or take notes on a piece of paper. I did that when I started. Now I just try to remember who all I wanted to touch base with (admittedly, my brain does not work as well as notes and Word). Most of us skim and comment only on what resonates with us or what we feel we can add our opinion/advice to. Don't sweat it!
Well, I have spent so much time admiring the snow (It is beginning to look like a Christmas card, outside!) that I have let time fritter away. But I really think winter is my "happy season". I take comfort in the quieter time, the pure white of clean snow, and the coziness of a cup of coffee in my hand and a baggy sweater on my body. Heaven! On with the day!

Morning, all,
Yep, still stuck on the book thing, too. All of Walter Farley's Black Beauty books, loved every one of those. Jim Kjelgaard did a whole series of books on Irish setters, starting with Big Red, that I fell in love with, as well. Got attached to the Dick Francis racing mysteries from the UK, read every one of those. Plowed through all the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse series and her Aurora Teagarden series, as well as the ones set in Midnight, Texas, and the Harper Connelly books. Would that I were as prolific an author! Her best character so far is Lily Bard, who appeals to me a lot. Plus, of course, those are set in the little fictional town of Shakespeare, Arkansas. Her latest, the Gunnie Rose series, is post-apocalyptic and enjoyable, as well.
For the sci-fi fans, Spider Robinson's Callahan's Crosstime Saloon series was/is amazing. Wuthering Heights was a wade when I was young, but it got easier on re-reading. I'm kind of omnivorous when it comes to fiction, and even enjoy Stephen King, though not the super scary ones. Dumas Key was good, as was The Stand. The nightmares after reading The Shining told me I'm never going to be a person who likes to be scared. Read all the Piers Anthony Xanth books, as well, for the person who mentioned those. Also loved Richard Bach's books, especially Illusions. Corresponded with him once upon a time.
And now I'll hush about books. There are too many out there to name all the ones I've loved. I'm grateful they exist at all.
In terms of places, I'm mostly attached less to place and more to people. I'm grateful for how many places I've been, and lived. It's been an amazing life to date, and I look forward to even more joy now that we're putting down roots for the first time. Ten years ago, I moved in with my beloved, and everywhere he is has turned out to be a place that I'm grateful for.
Love y'all,
Lisa in Arkansas
Edit - Kelly, it's s'posed to snow here tonight! We'll see... but I'm looking forward to it, too.6 -
Visited the bread and cake shop on the way home from school. Bea had a gingerbread man with pink eyes and we bought a cake for DH 's tea and rolls for lunch. Then I bought take away coffees, because I don't know how to work my son's machine.
Bea was in heaven this morning having DH all to herself. They mainly played picnics and train tracks.
The nanny came in at 12 and fed her lunch. She is now having her nap, so DH has a chance to wash and shave (!) and we are going to have a nap ourselves.
I was able to organise someone to come and mend our double socket next Tuesday morning, but the window people still haven't got back to us. Grrrrrrrrrr!
My favourite place us in Paris. The view from a café just opposite Notre Dâme. You can sit there having a (very expensive) beer and a few olives and watch the tourists passing over the bridge towards the truly gorgeous cathedral. I want my ashes to be scattered from there.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx4 -
Got in a decent walk today ... 5.6 km. I needed to do that because I'm falling behind in my goal of exercising 1 hour/day (or more).
This week hasn't been particularly good in terms of energy ... so much to do and just generally not feeling brilliant.

Two other parties offered on the house we are looking at. My realtor says we have the strongest offer. The seller dropped the price by 10,000 and the others on the fence jumped when we did. If the others start going up in order to out bid us I did tell realtor I will not get into a bidding war. We offered a fair price and can offer the quick close the seller wants. We should hear this morning.
My purpose in helping son buy the home is working together to heal the cracks in our relationship as we bring back this home to be the jewel we know is in this home. Just working together to try and find a home has already opened positive dialogue that is needed for both our sakes. We have done projects together in the past so I know as a team we will work well together redoing the home. We also have similar tastes which is an added bonus.
Two good signs I got yesterday were I mentioned this property to a fellow colleague and she said she has a friend living in this neighborhood and loves it. I also good talking to someone who recently redid her home and she gave me a great lead on buying windows. This home will need windows. Fortunately it is small so not very many.
If this home does not work out we will continue to look to find that right home.

We bought this particular one locally because I was in a hurry and it was the only model they had. And it was cheaper than Amazon. They do have little motors that need to be replaced every couple years.
Tracey - I too was raised in an ancient house in Northern Indiana - not quite as far north as you, but still temps below zero during was nothing new. All single paned windows, plenty of frost on the windows during the winter and I remember scraping it off with my fingernails. We kids slept in an unheated upstairs with only a hole cut between the floors and a register. We each got a hot water bottle at night to take to bed. The house was heated with a small propane stove that sat in the living room, mom strung the clothesline in there during the winter. We kids called it the "panty parade". I should write my memoirs with stories of little pigs and goats in the house, lol. It was actually a great way to grow up!

Good morning, everyone. I just ran across this forum which seems to be really active and engaged. I, like @dejavouhlala am quite overqualified for the group ... just turned 74 last week. (So that now makes me the oldest here, @barbiecat??? (Not sure how I feel about that
I have been on MFP for the past year or so, starting out well and then losing the same 10 pounds repeatedly for a few months. Started really focusing on developing new habits and a 'permanent' way of eating in a healthy way in July. Since I have lost nearly 30 pounds and have about 12 more to go. I am finding this last 12 to be much more challenging than the first 30! I have been looking for a group that is active (many of the MFP threads seem to lack staying power!).
Below is a picture of my primary motivation (aside from aging healthily, of course). Her name is Annie and we are working hard toward earning a Gold Medal in dressage, which would be quite a feat at my advanced age . Accomplishing this requires that BOTH horse and rider become quite fit (especially core fitness). I ride pretty much every day and also go to the gym 3-5 times a week, focusing mostly on the rowing machine and weights. So far, this strategy seems to be working fine ... I just don't want to get discouraged now that the going is getting much tougher AND cold weather is just around the corner.

Jan: What a lovely photo of you and Annie!
Tracey and Lanette: I too grew up in a house that was way too cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Know Georgia does not have the extreme cold that you two knew, but, I well remember freezing when I got in the bed during the winter months. Didn't have sense enough to wear socks to bed or put on heavier clothing. I think my parents finally got electric blankets. During the summer there was no air as when they painted the outside of the house the windows were painted shut and never unstuck.
Favorite Place: Growing up in the country, loved playing in the woods and the creek. Now, a walk in a gloomy tree lined park by a stream makes me happy!

Welcome, Jan, You are probably not the oldest on this thread. You will find that you have much in common with many of us. My primary forms of exercise are walking and line dancing. The woman I walk with nearly every day is 76 and many of the men and women and my line dances classes are over 80 so I am inspired by active people who are older than I am. I came to MFP at age 62 after decades of failure at losing weight. I found the answers and the encouragement I needed here and this is now a daily habit for me. You didn't mention where you live so I have no idea what kind of cold weather is coming. I live in NW Washington state where it is getting colder and wetter. I just bought a new coat that is extra warm and with lots of extra layers and a wool hat, scarf, and gloves, I'll be walking my dogs before daylight every day.
