All in all today's run was easier than I was expecting, possibly easier than last week's 11km. Obviously now I'm tired and RUNGRY (even though I got home and ate half my bodyweight in toast and peanut butter) but it didn't really start to feel tough until the last 4k or so. I did feel a bit lightheaded around kilometre 8 but that seemed to pass when I turned the music up louder, and I've worked out a 500ml water bottle lasts me 10k so will have to work out where to carry or buy another one for my last few long runs.
Though the thought that in 4 weeks time I have to do what I just did and AN HOUR MORE is a little daunting, I do now believe I'll be able to do it as long as my legs don't kick up too much of a fuss in the meantime. In fact I'm already toying with exactly how to go about preparing for another half I would like to do at the end of March. I'm veering between thinking it would be a good idea to try and just keep repeating these last 4 weeks of my current training plan and thinking maybe a couple of weeks of relative rest and then start another plan, preferably one that has me cover more distance than this total novice just aim to finish and survive one.

13km seems like a lot to me!! I'm still working up to distances like that! It is super daunting to know how far I will have to go if I want to do my first half next year, so I totally get that feeling. But isn't it amazing to think back to when you were just starting to run and how hard it was just to do a mile or two?!? That's what motivates me!6 -

so running has been very spotty. funky but whatever.
i volunteered at a trail race. there was a 50 mile ultra and lots of other smaller distances. it was all done manually. no timing chips. we tracked each loop. it was freezing. i lost feeling in my toes for most of the day.
speed demon did pretty well. i brought a sweater for her. i didn't know people would be pheasant hunting. but she didn't panic too often. i loved cheering and helping out the runners. it was a muddy and hilly course. it started out frozen but as the day warmed and the runners passed, it got very sloppy. a few people took headers or slid down hills on their butts. some people started in road shoes and switched to trail shoes. many switched out socks, pants, or trail shoes for another pair of trail shoes. we had warm food and fun snacks and places for their drop bags. i looked forward to cheering them on as they finished each loop.
actual race:
put my feet on the blowers for 15 min and could feel my feet again. took off a bunch of layers and pinned my number on. i left speed demon's vest/cape/sweater on. i knew there were 12 hills and we went around the lake. and that it was muddy. there were 10 or so other runners with dogs doing the canicross race. a few nondog people. it was super muddy. super slippery. all the dog runners had to stop for poop in the first half i think. speed demon was super excited and i had one of my fastest miles (10:34). definitely on the trails. with big hills. overall, i was about 2 min faster than normal on a trail. and i haven't been running on such challenging terrain.
i also became lost and found. picking up lost glove(1) and glasses and scarf along the way. i picked up another runner who at the least twisted an ankle. our dogs paced each other. i was covered in mud from my toes to my knees.warming up in the car

Oh yes, totally! My brain still does whatever a mental version of a double take is when I catch myself thinking things like "oh I only have to run 7km today". Hang on, only????? Back in the summer 7km was a long run, long enough in fact to give me shin splints and put me out of action for a week at one point! Now it's like a half day at work :-)
So amazing what our bodies can do if we prepare them in a somewhat sensible way.8 -

Longest run since coming back from injury. I had adjusted my heart rate zones and paid attention, trying to stay out of the "red zone", and it felt about right. I also feel like it helped me stay strong to the end, even though I am not used to the distance. Will be slowly building back up to HM levels.
Then we had a long meeting, followed by going from one birthday party to another with the kids, where yes, I did eat the cake. Is it bedtime yet?

As promised... I'm in the blue shirt. The cameras liked me that day, as I'm in their promo video now, too. And the guy in red always dresses like that (I'm sure there's a reason but I don't know it) and we tend to end up in a lot of race photos together.11

Lift day to day for me, no running. Speed work tomorrow, not too sure what I'll do, hills or intervals. It is supposed to be raining so may do dreadmill intervals....I know I know, just get out and run in the rain, but 40 degrees and raining, meh. Plus still have the lingering cold. We'll see what tomorrow brings, may just embrace the suck and hit intervals outside in the rain. Have a great day everyone.
ETA:on a non running note, still an NSV for me, able to fit in a set of scrubs a whole size down from my old ones and these are much less full cut.12 -

That's a HUGE NSV! Scrubs can be awful. I went from an XL to a small, but only just haha. I can tell when I'm having a bad week, they get a little tight lol.2 -

I had to Google NSV - non-scale-victory apparently - but yes! Way to rock it!!3 -
8k run today, but. Sigh. I didn't have any bananas before going out, so I had a piece of bread with a bit of honey. It worked yesterday, but today I decided to tackle my hill. Bad idea. Hill combined with bread sitting in my tummy meant I got to 7.5k and just couldn't keep going. I'm so disappointed because its only another 0.5k to get today's target but meh sometimes *kitten* happens.
Tomorrow is a 13k run, so I must get some bananas tonight.5 -

Congrats to everyone running and racing in the cold wet conditions. I opted to pass on this morning's run as it was cold and raining. I have cold gear, but not cold/wet gear. Guess I need to go shopping3 -

@mbaker566 Well done - that's truly a look of joy in the photo of you and speed demon.
@polskagirl01 That is a fantastic photo. I like that they captured multiple runners on a hill descent.
You: arms open and helping with balance and stride reaching down the hill = stable and in control.
1st Athlete behind you: Arms closed tight - feet tight together = struggling for control
2nd Athlete behind you Eyes glued to the root across the trail - arms low and loose
My data from Saturdays 7 Peaks adventure seems to have been corrupted when Strava picked it up.
Strava Shows that I ran a perfect event keeping my km splits very tight around 6:19/km - if only it was true.
My MapMyRun data which is true to the raw Garmin data.

Omgoodness I really think you and I could have been separated at birth sometimes. I actually considered hitting my husband over the back of the head with a saucepan a few days ago when I saw him happily grab and eat the last banana the night before my long run. I've found in an emergency I can switch my pre-run banana for a small cereal bar and it hasn't given me any trouble yet, but I have since put up a large sign in the kitchen forbidding consumption of last remaining banana from fruit bowl without consulting me first!

@juliet3455 that really looks like a fun time. I love the casual nature of it and it really makes me yearn for winter trail running. Soon enough, I guess.
@workaholic_nurse congrats on the NSV!! That's awesome!
@mbaker566 good job volunteering!, and on your race! Dogs, trail running, mud...sounds like a wonderful time! I wish I could find some dog friendly trail races around here.

@polskagirl01 - great picture. Can't believe that guy runs in that outfit every time! What on Earth? When I opened your picture I saw the 50% battery and I thought it was my laptop. I unplugged and replugged in my power cord asking myself "what's wrong with the power cord?" Then I realized how stupid that was, lol.
