It is March 9th, 2019. I think with my other upcoming runs, I will be fine. I do not imagine I will run the ENTIRE thing. I see some random walking thrown in.
Upcoming runs:
12/8/18 - Reindeer Run 10k
01/26/2019 - Java Jog 10k
02/17/2019 - Hot Chocolate 15k
03/09/2019 - Berry Half Marathon
07/04/2019 - Atlanta Peachtree Road Race
DECEMBER GOAL 75 Miles5 -
i despise smart goals. idk why but i cringe whenever i hear them referenced. they make me irrationally angry.
excited. i'm signed up for my annual half in door county. staying in the same dog friendly hotel. hopefully, we do not meet another porcupine like we did last year.
i'm trying to decide which full to do or if i should just bypass the 26.2mi and sign up for a 50k. but at the same time, i really want that 26.2 on the back of my car. so need to ramp up my mileage again. and if nothing else, hit the track at the local ice rink-which i feel is like the dreadmill for most you8 -
Well I haven't made my SMART Goal in 5 months and with the addition of winter activities - Curling, Xcountry and Downhill skiing - plus family-work socials December promises to be challenging with the extremely short days.
Go to work in the dark, home in the dark, run in the dark, ski in the dark.
It's a good thing they have lights at the swimming pool, outdoor hockey rink and curling rink.
Oh and there might be some random shinny pickup hockey games.
Stick with my standard goal anyway. 140km7 -

@eleanorhawkins Thank you! I'm terrible for setting somewhat optimistic goals and then being disheartened when I fall behind them, so I'm hopeful that this isn't going to be one of them. I want to push myself, but I don't want to give up!
@PastorVincentPastorVincent Aaaah, SMART goals, I'd forgotten about them2 -

I think most of us try to!

I'm in for 50 for December. Real goals are to do well at St Jude Marathon Weekend 5k, keep running and get used to the colder weather, and hopefully run the Buffaglo 5k night time fun run through the Christmas lights at Shelby Farms.
My goal for St Jude is to at least beat my time from last year, which was the first race I ever ran. This is a crazy big race with five thousand people mostly on teams walking abreast, so anything could happen. Last year I was forced to walk for eight minutes before space cleared out enough to run. So not going in with any particular expectations. Also, current forecast says there's supposed to be a lightning storm and heavy rain at race time, and I am not a good rain runner, or immune to lightning bolts!4 -
I'm in, not *quite* ready to rejoin the 100-mile club, but we'll see how December goes. I'm using Hal Higdon's Intermediate 2 Half Marathon plan as a guide at the moment.
November totals: Ran 121.5 km, Biked 80.1 km
December goals: Run - 150 km, Bike/swim/other - 4 hrs
Only 1 race in December, a trail 5k next Saturday.10 -
@eleanorhawkins Have faith in yourself and your training. Once the gun sounds all those negative thoughts will disappear and you'll be fine.4

@eleanorhawkins you totally got this! That's what the training is all about. For your run on Sunday, if you are anything like me, you will hit a bit of a wall at 14k and feel like you are just slogging through, but that last k will be awesome. You will finish it and think "wow, I could totally do another 5k, but I'm so glad I don't have to!"
In my half, I had a moment around 8k where I got an awful stitch, it was hurting to breathe. I had everyone's voice in my head saying walk if you have to, but my own thoughts were "I didn't do all this training to walk". I slowed for about 10 seconds, which helped it ease, and realised I'd been going too fast. The slowed down, got a big cup of water at the next water station and away I went.
You do all the training so you learn how to deal with things that crop up and you know your limits.
As far as being on your own, i ran this on my own. The spectators really help boost you and at the end, i helped someone else who was wavering by giving her a word of encouragement, and we ran together for a bit. At the end she thanked me for helping her. You really feel a sense of community at the end as you do those last few ks.
Enjoy Sunday!10 -
@Avidkeo @Tramboman @kgirlhart and everyone else thanks for the encouragement! I have a feeling I'll be even worse next week, but luckily (for you all at least lol) I'm taking a couple of days' break in the countryside to hopefully catch up on some sleep and relax beforehand, and as I can't access the forum from my phone (long story, Spanish app sends me to Spanish forums) you won't have to put up with my rambling doubts ;-) Plan is to head out there Wednesday afternoon, come home on Saturday morning switch cases head for the city hit the race expo pick up pack look at the Xmas lights stay in hotel try to sleep run/walk all the miles eat all the doughnuts. Then maybe take a shower6

@eleanorhawkins I think this is the best place for those rambling doubts. We understand them unlike our non-running friends and family.7

Very true! The family just look at me like I've lost the plot. Then again they've been doing that since I started running :-)5 -
200 run miles (minimum goal)
Work harder at maintaining my weight, I seem to still be trending down.5 -
i despise smart goals. idk why but i cringe whenever i hear them referenced. they make me irrationally angry.
I know exactly why SMART goals make me irrationally angry. Some consultant sold the idea to my employer, and we had to use SMART goals for the employee review process. For my entire career, the employee review process was full of dishonesty, doublespeak, and corporate BS. It never much related to the actual job. So when we had SMART goals for the review, they weren't really specific, they were marginally measurable, making them attainable meant sacrificing on other letters, if they came from the top they weren't realistic, and the only thing really timely about them was they had to match up to the review cycle timeline.
So even though I know rationally it's a reasonable way to structure goals, I can't look at it because of the memory of perversion by Corporate America (not to name a specific employer.)6 -

yeah, that about covers it.2 -
I think I’m gonna keep my goal of 50 miles again for this month. I’m gonna aim for 55-60 miles, but the first half of December is gonna be finals and tons of stress so I guess I’ll have to see how it goes. The good news is my winter break lasts all the way until the end of January so I’m gonna run lots!
I’m debating signing up for my first HM at the end of March. I want to take that leap and sign up but I’m scared i won’t be ready. The furthest I’ve ever run is 6.5 miles and I do find myself walking still when it gets tough. Do you think 16 weeks is manageable? My family thinks I’m nuts so they aren’t really any help4 -
Did we get an end of the month question this month? Because if no one else has one, I have one. Who inspires you, as a runner?
There's an elderly gentleman who runs in my neighborhood who is also a member at my gym. He's had a stroke and is recovering, but is still partially paralyzed on one side. At first it was almost painful to watch him struggle along, but about a year has passed, and I've gotten used to seeing him. In fact I see him out there almost every day. Sometimes I'll drive to get groceries and pass him and pass him on the way back an hour later, several miles down the road from the first place I passed him. In recent months, I've seen him competing in local 5ks. I think he's awesome and I hope that if I ever have to face a serious health crisis I'm half as determined as he is.11 -
December goal miles = 150
I know I will get at least 150 miles in. So, my goal is 150?
Really, I just want to get my two 20 mile training runs for the Miami Marathon finished and stay injury free. I have a half on 12/15 but I will be running it for fun. I am paranoid that if I try to race it I will injure myself and not be able to run the marathon in January.
@eleanorhawkins you got this! I hope you have fun
Upcoming Races:
12/15 = Stars at Night Half
1/26/19 = Miami Tropical 5K
1/27/19 = Miami Marathon
3/10/19 = ZOOMA half
5/4/19 = Wisconsin Marathon (mittens challenge part 1)
5/5/19 = Kalamazoo Marathon (mittens challenge part 2)3 -

@eleanorhawkins I don't use the app, I go to the webpage in my browser on my phone. It displays so much better and I don't keep having the done vs post reply mix up. Also can post pics from there lol. I hate the app for the forums.
That's my way of saying ramble away. I certainly did before mine bahaha3 -

Oh that's a good one! Can I be the first to say all you guys?? Haha.
Actually for me it's my kids. Until last year I was overweight and ad no real motivation for anything. I had run on and off but never seriously or sticking to anything more than a few months. I didn't want my kids growing up to be me. So I stared exercising etc and slowly included running. Now my 4yr old likes going for walks/runs with me and my 2yr old will join us soon. I look forward to entering them in races and doing it together. The desire to model a healthier way of living is my inspiration11 -
The inspiration for my running is my wife.
She's lost 75 pounds in the past 18 months, and participated in her very first walking event in October.
Not only that, she's put up with me for almost 45 years.
Whenever I get discouraged or lazy, I think about how far we've come together. For better or worse, I have no desire to finish second...16 -
I thought I had posted this but I don't see it. Sorry if its a double up lol.
Today is day 1 of my December challenges. I wanted to run 10k but it's blowing an absolute gale, I was running sideways at one point it was that strong! So I gave up after 6k. Glad to get out though. I'll try get in a bit longer tomorrow...fancy pose because my visor was attempting to head to Australia!
December running:
1st - 6/90 for 12 days of Christmas challenge7 -

I am inspired by my club's Ultravet runners. "Ultravet" means over age 70; and they put together a team of guys who go run USATF national events. None of them is as fast as I am; but some of them were faster than I am when they were my age.
I aspire to be like them, still running in my 70s and having fun doing so.
