Kim, You did the very best thing for Christmas by being there for your mom and your nephew. No amount of Christmas music and decorating could be better than that.
Bonnie, I love the portrait of your dog.
My walking friend is back from her 10 day holiday trip. The dogs and I are looking forward to walking with her.
Barbie from drizzly NW WA4 -
Good morning all. Michelle in Washington, maybe we can help motivate each other to be a little more active.
Michele, loved your Christmas pics. I have not tried out that feature here yet.
Terri, I’m jealous of your beach. I’d love to be close to one, warm or cold weather.
Cari, I sew and dabble at needle crafts. I’m hoping to spend more time working on my skills at knitting and crochet this year.
I lived through my roller skating date with granddaughter; no broken bones! Today I’m off to visit my 80 yo uncle in the nursing home. It’s about an hour away so I’ll spend 3 hrs or so.

Bonnie – how did you manage not to gain weight over the holidays? I know I gained about 2 or 3lbs, but they are gone now. Yet, I know they’ll probably come back. And then go
Enough – welcome! Good for you going back to school? What will you be studying?
M – I have a question for you. I think this is OK to do, but I just want to check. When you make a pavlova, can you make the pavlova ahead of time and right before serving it then add the whipped cream and fruit?
Jess, Colby and Vince are sleeping right now. Came home and went to Kohl’s. I don’t know if Lynette is going to give Jess anything for Christmas, so I got Lynette a wallet for Jess to give her. If she doesn’t give Jess something, I’m going to keep the wallet. I need one anyway. In a way, I hope she doesn’t give Jess something, I like this wallet.
Then went to Aldi to get some things for NYE. Stopped at Food Lion but the only ham they had was a 10lb one. The four of us would NEVER eat a 10lb ham. So maybe tomorrow I’ll go to WalMart and pick up a ham. Came home and made a lasagna for us to have tonight (put baking directions on it for Jess so that it’s done when I get home from church.). Now thinking that I’ll make some of the cheese sauce. When Vince gets up, I’ll probably make the apple pie. Or maybe I’ll make it tomorrow. We shall see.

well I lay down for just a bit and took a nap... felt good.. will go and walk my friends 7 dogs lol.... they are gone for the day and needed someone to get them out.. will take a bag of treats with me, then go see if I can get any food into DFIL hoping he will be in better spirits, and then come back here and take out trash for a neighbor and run her car for 10 min or so, then shower and take Alfie for a walk...1

While we were eating our breakfast this morning two large foxes came into our garden. I was wondering of we had any around here and - Yes we do! They looked in prime condition.
I went for my run after lunch. I listened to a couple of Soul Music podcasts - Allegri Miserere and Swan Lake. Came back and listened to Spem in Alium while I made a curry. All marvellous!
DH and I are planning to make our croissants again. They take three days and taste heavenly. I've made them before, once a year, twice running. Today I mix the dough in the KitchenAid and refrigerate it overnight. I don't have a long marble countertop now, so I will have to use the table for rolling. Not sure how to stop the flour making a mess. Clingfilm?
We won't be eating all the croissants as they freeze well. Just one each for New Year's Day.

Morning, afternoon and evening, everyone,
Kylia - so good to see you back!
Mary - good to see you, too, and I'm so sorry for your losses. You've been missed! And Shep is just beautiful.
Rori - glad you're taking advantage of what's near you. I think of you often.
Michele in NC - the pics were beautiful.
Allie - I hope the new year brings peace and joy, to you and to all of us.
To all who are new - welcome! In a few days, Barbie will start another thread, as we start a clean slate each month. She'll post the link on December 31. Look forward to seeing you here and in the new year! Tell us what name you prefer to be known as, and where we can place you... and step into the conversation wherever you choose.
I have been reading all along, not posting the last few days, as I went into my own limited form of hibernation, I guess. A three-hour nap yesterday afternoon seems to have finally topped me up on my sleeping tank, whatever that means.
Enjoyed the time with family who came in on Sunday, stayed until Christmas morning, very low key, no special celebrations, just pleasant and undemanding. Sat down and played Cards Against Humanity with them both evenings and laughed until our faces hurt. It was fast, furious, but don't play it if you can't handle a dirty word, 'cause it uses all of them. A lot.
Our 25-year-old son purchased his nonrefundable ticket yesterday to go to Coos Bay, OR, for school. He leaves March 24. He chose where to go, he chose what field he wants to study, he's building his own future instead of letting anyone say, "Go here, go there." He chose to start at community college level, which I think is a good idea--he was a "barely got by" student in high school, and I think a slightly less demanding introduction to the next phase of education is a very good idea. From there, he plans to go to Oregon State University in Corvallis for fermentation sciences. He's going back on the GI Bill, so everything paid for, and Oregon schools don't differentiate between in-state and out-of-state tuition, one reason for his choice. Plus, he graduated from high school there, and still has friends there. His divorce will also be final the first week of January, and I think he feels as if he's shedding his burdens, one by one, to go into the next phase free of old baggage. Proud of him--it was barely a year ago that I was on the phone trying to talk him out of the dark place he'd fallen into, and was scared we'd lose him.
Don't think I'm a saint about all this, though. My patience is thinning rapidly, and I swear, if I hear his detailed plan one more time for how he's going to do all this, I may run from the house screaming and clutch the nearest fencepost to keep from strangling him. As positive as everything he's doing is, and as much as I love him, I'm ready for him to go... And I'll miss him, too. It's possible that the essence of being a parent (or just a grown-up) is being able to have two completely opposing ideas in your head and only expressing one of them.
Gained the same five pounds back that I've been battling for months, and just got my eating back under control these last two days, and took one back off. Just trying to get to the new year without going up a size at this point. Remembering once more that control starts now, not the next meal, not Monday, not January 1. Now.
Love y'all!

I hear you. I have similar frustrations with my oldest son.

Allie: I agree with Barbie. Go with a positive attitude.
Barbie: It is good that you’re dancing again! Congratulations!!! :flowerforyou:
Mary: Have a great time with your DS and DDIL. It sounds like Shep is going to have a good time at his boarding facility.
Michele: I made a Christmas Tree skirt years ago but haven’t used it in the past several Christmases. I have two living trees growing in pots, and a forest of little artificial trees. DDIL has a very high quality 10 foot tall artificial tree that she uses every year, and an electric train to go around the base. The tree requires high ceilings and a lot of ladder work. She has loads of lovely glass ornaments. I’m not a huge fan of the tree, but it is a tradition that she loves. Her train running around the base is glorious!
Kylia in OH: You have been a very busy woman! It is good to see you posting again. :flowerforyou:
Kim: I am delighted to read your post. I’ve missed you. I hope the New Year brings good things to your life. It is too bad that your brother has forbidden his son from seeing you. This is a tough time for your family, and things will eventually be less stressful. :flowerforyou:
Viv: We aren’t planning any big celebrations. DH and I are typically homebodies, and our children are far away. :ohwell:
Pip: I agree with you. We’re all amazing.
I am having coffee while DH sleeps in. It is 9 am and this is a late morning for him, so I’ll go up and check on him. I was all wound up last night and didn’t get to bed until late. I heard from DD and she did get her Teddy Bear Angel. Yay!!! I wonder whether she’ll put it atop her tree, or somewhere else. I made three of them in the 1970’s. DS doesn’t want his, so I now have two. I spent a bit of time on fixing up his angel and it will be ready for him if he ever wants it.

Bonnie – how did you manage not to gain weight over the holidays? I know I gained about 2 or 3lbs, but they are gone now. Yet, I know they’ll probably come back.
I had only one dessert per day (except 1 day) and logged everything I ate. Stayed under calories most days, I think. Any leftover dessert tonight is going in the trash in the morning. I don't buy sweets anymore and have done well through the month not allowing myself any sugar. Had a slice of cherry pie today and that's it for me. Back to no sugar!3 -
@grandmallie, what a great friend and daughter-in-law you are!!0
-
@barbiecat, Thanks! He's a Brittany and belongs to my son and daughter-in-law. They share though!2

aww thanks Bonnie~
I went to my friends and walked the dogs... ohhhh they are all are adorable... they left me 70.00 and a present and a homemade jar of peach jam and blueberry jam, Leah the mom to 3 of the pups made a beautiful scarf for me, just a stunner... then went down to feed DFIL and they had pasta with meat sauce... a favorite of his, so he sat with his eyes closed and I shoveled lol, he ate that all up had 2 glasses of ginger ale and one of his birthday presents that i got him was 4 4 packs of jello lemon meringue .. and he LOVES it.... so he had that for dessert,
came home and took out the neighbors trash and ran her car for her...
watching a bit of t.v. and then will hop in the shower and get ready for tonight...2 -
Good morning ladies!
Kylia -thank you for checking in and catching us up on your life. I remembered the photos of your vacation cabin. Sorry about the turmoil at the business, if I lived close I would have volunteered to come help you with the billing!
Kim – oh my, so sorry your brother’s final days aren’t peaceful and you were able to be there for your mom and nephew. My heart goes out to your family and your special nephew. (((HUGS))))
Michele – SEVEN trees! Your house is beautiful and so festive!!
Lisa - any more thoughts about going to grad school? Did they get a new knee surgery date arranged?
Bonnie – painting of your dog is wonderful! Who rules the house when the schnauzers are there? Congrats on not gaining weight during this time of the year. You are off to a great start!
Betsy – cute family photo. I couldn’t tell which young lady was YOU, so I’m glad you identified everyone!
Mary – have fun in Vegas! So happy you are back with us here! Hugs to Shep!!
Okie – YIKES that was some blister! But not as gory as what I’d expected, lol. Your NY Eve plans sound great!
Heather – super cute clock. You are such a good cook – and now making croissants. One of my favorites! How exciting to see your friendly foxes living in town. Good way to keep the mouse and vole and other bothersome critter population under control.
Allie – agreed on what others have said about the resume. What does the new office manager think of the new dentist? I imagine she’s going through the resume/interview process too? And glad you and Mary have “made up” as it were, at least you did the honorable thing-sometimes apologizing when you are not in the wrong is hard. You did your part. Whether she takes it to heart or not, that’s on her. Sorry to hear about your DFIL. I know he is a big part of your life. Our dogs are just like Alfie with having a fit when seeing animals on TV whether they can hear them or not.
Rita, Pip, Tracey and others with medical concerns right now – wishing you good luck with easy fixes if anything is needed.
Kay – You inspire me with your intermittent fasting plan! I need to get back on board. I found it was pretty easy to wait until 10 am or later to eat, and by then I was really hungry and had healthy & nourishing food ready. I would try to stop eating by 6 pm. I filled the void with coffee or tea in the mornings (I like them w/o cream or sugar anyhow). One thing I’ve been missing this past few weeks is actually feeling hungry! When I realize that “hunger” is a good thing, the body is recharging and cleaning out old dead cells, it’s easier to get back in the IF mode.
Physical therapist now has me using a rope and pulley to draw my arm upward and outward where it really doesn’t want to go with this bum shoulder. I rigged up the torture device out in my potting shed. I decided as I do my exercises that “I am the Champion of my own race” during this recovery.
Yesterday our water supply quit. We are on a 4-house teensy “community well” managed by a utility. The repairmen came out within a few hours and it was on again. Luckily, I had just finished 2 loads of laundry before it stopped. Last night after supper dishes, no water. The repairman showed up around 7:30 pm and got it going again…. But said it was iffy whether it would stay on and they’d have to replace the pump. They are out there right now, waiting on the crane to show up. We have buckets and jugs of water ready for flushing and drinking. UPDATE- they have three trucks out there now. I forgot to ask the serviceman if we are going to be billed for the new pump or if we’ve been paying into an R&R fund? I think we have so not worrying. The original one has been there 25 years so they should have been stashing away $$ for this new one.
And my laptop battery needs to be replaced! Got the big warning this morning! Thank goodness for Amazon. The replacement for this one and my old “workhorse” Dell from 2007 (which I LOVED but could not find batteries for at the time – Amazon now carries them!) should be delivered on Monday. For the time being I can sit at the kitchen table and plug it in and type- where I am right now. Works good!
Welcome new ladies and returnees, this is the perfect time of the year to get on board and join us.

@lhscapil, the girl Schnauzer was top dog! I was watching her while my friend was out of state. They were all so good. Toby, the biggest, was the most docile. It was comical to see the two Schnauzers telling him off. LOL!1 -

Lanette - thanks for asking!
On grad school - ran the budget out for the next couple years, and at $1,800 - $2,000 per six-week class, grad school will have to wait one more year, unfortunately. Or fortunately, not sure. I've got plenty of challenges coming up at work in the new job for the next year, so will reserve grad school until I feel I've conquered all my challenges, work-wise. I usually take a year to start looking around for the next challenge, so starting spring semester of 2020 should be about right for my own personal timing.
On knee surgery - They finally put the consult back into the VA system on the 19th of December to get the right knee looked at by a surgeon, so the best I can hope for is an assessment appointment in January. It's the usual (insert your favorite dirty word for a mixed-up mess) with the VA... but wouldn't be able to afford the co-pays and deductibles on my health insurance for at least another year, so I'm kinda stuck with it. The good part is a) it's free, and b) it will be done by a civilian surgeon, one with a good reputation.
Swift change of subject - Finally broke down and bought a chainsaw today - we've been looking at them for months, but other things took priority. But recent rains and wind brought down a number of trees, and we can use the wood... so, bought one today with the payment for my vacation that finally came through from my previous council. The boys (49-year-old husband and 25-year-old son, for those who don't know me) are outside playing with it now. They love anything that makes noise, I swear.
Allie - you've got tons of good advice... and just one other point, I'll bet Mary's going to go in all het up and indignant, so all you need to do is be calm, confident and prepared. You'll do great, I have faith.
Love y'all!

Lisa~ Thanks , I am sure hoping Dr Pandey keeps me on, for the 12 yrs I have been there.. I have done everything.. now I have to write that all down and let him know that I am willing to learn, found out that his wife is an Office Manager and wears the pants in the family and that has Allison worried, she thinks he will pick apart her resume and offer her less than she is making which for her is near impossible as she has 3 kids 2 still school age and in High School and her Ex doesn't pay a red cent..
I am not concerned to much.. everytime something has happened to a job, something else always opens up.. where God closes a door ,he opens a window... tonight I will go and enjoy myself and not worry... tomorrow I will get what I need to together and fine tune the resume...7 -

Lanette: I’m sorry that your shoulder is giving you pain, but absolutely impressed with your straight forward manner of doing what needs to be done. I hope things sort themselves out and the pain disappears soon.
Allison: I like your attitude! Enjoy yourself tonight and prepare your work-related information tomorrow. I hope that everything works out so that you are happy and employed. :flowerforyou:
We’re planning an RV trip to Illinois for this coming spring. DD says that April is good. I hope to do a bit of sight-seeing on the way. I think I’ve already mentioned that I hope to see Mt. Rushmore. We have friends in Montana that I’d also like to see. I don’t want to go anywhere in a snowstorm. The logical strategy is to make general plans and modify them as needed if weather requires a change of plans. I am looking forward to a little adventure.

Lanette - Yes, the croissants are extra special. It's rare to get that real 'sour' taste in a croissant these days, even if the texture is perfect. Even the artisan bakeries rise them too quickly. Our dough is in the fridge for the night. Tomorrow is layering day with the butter, then back into the fridge until Monday, when you do the final roll out - 44 ins long, and cutting and rolling them up, rising, baking etc. I get DH to do the marking out and cutting.
It makes 15 croissants, each one 350 calories. We will have one each NYD for breakfast, then the rest will go in the freezer. The texture is a bit denser than perfect, but the flavour is divine. It's just a bit of fun, but it's one of those things where the effort is actually worth it. I love slightly 'off' flavours in general. Sourdough, fermented foods, oxidised sherry and wine. Double yum.
Just watched the film 'CHEF' for the second time. Fun!

Katla - please tell us more about your daughter's farm - what are they raising - critters? Grain/pasture? both? I sure miss our farm at times, the country life is a great way to grow up. And keep in shape, lol. Sounds like you'll have a wonderful trip out there and back and hope Mt. Rushmore is possible! An adventure sounds great!
We have a new pump, the water utility got it installed in 2 hours this morning. Water guy said they had to depressurize and put chlorine in the system, and we were to run the outside faucet for "a bit" in case they had dislodged sediment in the line. I didn't nail down the water guy as to how long "a bit" is. We ran water through the outside hose bib for 15 minutes and didn't see any sediment or smell chlorine. I'm thinking the first 2 residences drew out any major sediment and chlorine when they ran their water through as we're at the end of the line and uphill a little, so we might not see/smell much.
Good news - no extra $$ for this, it's covered in the general monthly bills. Whew. Should be good for another 25 years.

Heather - have you ever made Brioche? Our local bakery sometimes makes loaves of it over the holidays and I forgot to check this year. Many, many years ago I made it in little fluted tin (wonder what happened to it?).
I had better metabolism back then, lol. But wouldn't mind a nice eggy buttery chunk right now

Relaxing having a pear and some cinnamon tea. Simple pleasure!

Made soup!
1/2 of a kielbasa sausage cut up, sauteed w/ garlic an drizzle of Amy's shiitake mushroom dressing. Add can green beans, diced tomatoes, baby potatoes about 6, and 4 cups of water. Then put in 2tsp of Better Than Bouillon beef paste. Simmer until the potatoes are done! Yummy!

Rebecca - your soup looks absolutely yummy and perfect for this weather. Wanted to mention how I love your minimalist look and that telephone desk is the best. How nice of Dana to you linked up for your DH's scooter!
So neat that all of your possessions "tell a story". As I look around my house, despite working on decluttering, only a few things really tell a story. I could easily eliminate about 90% more of what see -I wonder if DH would notice. Oh, I'd keep him and the dogs, lol.
Margaret, I forgot to mention how much I appreciated your post on staring at electronics screens and the links to macular degeneration. You always come up with really great research in so many areas of health that you post in this group. Thank you! Pear and tea sound great by the way
