Good morning ladies:
DebKing: Thanks for the boost.....got back on track yesterday so the 9 lbs since Oct. 28th is like a sack of potatoes gone...must think of it that way. Maybe a bag of sugar will be gone by Jan. 5th. The one thing I have noticed so far is I no longer need afternoon naps. Will continue to do my weekly weigh ins on Sat. mornings.
The one thing that is kind of confusing though is...I am following low carb way of eating which seems to be working. My daily limit of carbs is 88gms...... 62 gms of fat.....123 gms of protein. When others post they use the term LCHF (low carb, high fat)...so must one eat higher fat along with the carbs? Is that the combination that reflects a steady loss?
Trina: good for you for losing those 50 lbs and for maintaining what you lost. I hope to do the same. Geesh ....just dawned on me I will be 69 this year (July, 2019)...where has the time gone???? The best combination is something that works for you and that you can follow long term. Do these ratios work for you? Do you feel satisfied at the end of the day?
Personally, I aim for 35% protein/35% fat/30% carbs. It's difficult for me to eat that much protein. I usually exceed the fat amount. I just let the carbs fall where they may and try to stay under my calorie limit.

Wow. There's a lot of great inspiration here. I'm 63 1/2 and can relate to everyone's comments. I'm a life member of Weight Watchers but that stopped working for me the last couple of times doing the same thing I did when it seemed to work so I'm trying MFP again. I've found in the past that having a support group of like minded people that are walking in your shoes is the best way to stay on track and keep motivated so I will definitely check back with this group frequently. Good evening everyone: I've just found something that I would like to share with you. I am not at all computer literate so I am probably doing this wrong but here goes. I joined the Low Carber Daily Forum ...under the title Announcements...scroll down to Open treads-member threads on low carb topics....enter that thread....if you scroll down to the title Motivational...(it's the 2nd one How do I stop Cheating...go back to the 1st page and the essay is by "Twibbly". After reading it...I thought WOW.....I bookmarked it (that I know how to) and going to go back each day and read that. The lady says some powerful things. For example I like the idea of if your not hungry at breakfast...just eat when your hungry and if that's just 2x a day so be it...it works for you and there were other tips. It really gave me a boost. Lots of times I'm just not hungry...so today I didn't eat until 2 pm...then supper at 7:00 pm. and you know what...I am not hungry and am about to have my cocao powder and Stevia hot chocolate late snack and haven't had any other snacks. So just wanted to share and hope it will give someone else some support as it did me. Mary7

Good morning......did my weekly weigh in on Sat. and thankfully those 2 lbs. are gone so hopefully this coming Sat. another one will bite the dust. Have been on track so should happen. Hoping to get back to water exercises by the end of this week. I love my soups so someone suggested here just adding the coleslaw from the package....great idea when I went to store also found packages from Dole of broccali slaw so I added that and also a tablespoon of instant mashed potato to a 2 cup serving...very satisfying not to mention low on calories and carb. I like getting ideas from you ladies and finding my own to make a collection of low carb foods to rotate as not to get bored. I think that is helpful and you don't go back to cheating because of eating the same constantly.0

Congrats on the 2 pounds gone!! Woohoo!! Yes, I find that rotating what you eat really helps, and I too love all the tips on good healthy low-cal. foods! That is what is helping me...the logging of all the food each day...you can see what is going in your mouth. Why don't you just start!!!!!! We are just 8 days into the new year....we will cheer you on.......just start.....we are all in the same boat and you will not be alone. Just start logging every morsel you put into your mouth and you can see what you should cut back on..... cut out...... control the portions..... then you will have a plan along with ideas and tips from all of us here. BUT you have to start. Good luck2

I find weighing and logging my food keeps me from overeating. It's a pain some days, but it's crucial to losing weight.1 -

Hi, I'm 70. Lost 50lbs...stopped smoking....put 50lbs back on....now losing the 50lbs again. 1 week in and I've lost 4lbs...yippee, even if most of that is water. Onward folks7

I'm 61.5 and have logged daily for now 373 days. Using platejoy.com to simplify planning has been key to enjoying a variety of foods instead if getting stuck in a rut and fatigue breaking my will. I've lost over 100 lb with 50 to go. Along the way, I'm learning to eat and exercise like a healthy person. I'm not on a diet because I'll never again stop caring about my health.
If you log every day and want an encouraging friend who has been there done that, send me a request. If your profile isn't informative then please include some info to help me understand you. For me, having an open profile and diary helps me to do a realistic self-assessment and feel accountable. If you break your logging streak, I will send you an encouraging note. If you quit using mfp for a while without an explanation, I will unfriend you. With few exceptions, my mfp friends are much like me and welcome new friends.2 -

Good start......I started on Oct. 28th......weigh myself once a week on Saturdays...this morning down 12 lbs...slow for sure but steady. I swear the daily logging is the difference for me. 50 lbs to go.....like you....onward LOL0 -
Good morning everyone. Yesterday went through a big snow storm (in the great lakes area) and today and tomorrow very, very cold temps. Currently it's sitting at 10 f. or -12 cel. and that's without the wind chill...supposedly worse tomorrow. Brrrrrr. Well had a meltdown on Fri. evening...scarfed down a bag of potato chips. Won't be doing that any time soon as was not as satisfying as it used to be..in fact tummy was very upset afterwards. Feel better today though as did weekly weigh in and lost a lb. so that's 13 so far. I've got 49 more to go...such a big number (sigh) but then I did start at 62. Getting used to eating low carb and finding all kinds of ways and foods to have a variety of foods to go to so not to get bored. I am very surprized at myself and pleased that I have kept up my logging. We are leaving for Myrtle Beach for month of Feb. so looking forward to be more mobile.... walker and all.... for some exercise. First winter with having to use walker and so terrified of slipping or falling.....I don't need my back to get worse. Anyways keep working on your goals as I will on mine and slowly we go forward. Hi all! So nice to hear these good stories from others my age! I'm a 63-year-old woman, living alone, totally off-grid. So, no gym to go to, but plenty of wood and water hauling, and biking around when it's not pouring rain. On a small island without stores, I only shop about every 3 weeks. Self-discipline is way easier when you're not cooking for a family anymore, and there are no stores or restaurants to run to. I lost 25 lbs on MFP a few years ago, and maintained well for about 2 years. Then a combination of travel and general greed got the better of me, and I put the weight back on again. Re-losing those same 25 lbs again now. I'm 5'8", started MFP in early Nov at 160, and I'm now down to 145. Ten more lbs to go, to my goal of 135.
Right now I'm hungry, I'm sidetracking from the online work I should be doing, and I just discovered that I gained a pound and a half in 24 hours! Argh.
I'm happy you're all here, and beyond impressed by those of you who have stuck with weight loss over a long haul of many pounds. That's awesome discipline!6 -
hello everyone....it is still very cold here in Ontario..... so we have 4 days to go until we leave for Myrtle Beach. Although worried about the drive in the snow can't wait to be more mobile. With the weather being so cold and snowy haven't been able to get out much so boredom eating is becoming an issue. Although haven't gained anything (yet) haven't lost it either. Been eating a lot of the "diet" soup...it's a good thing I like soup and it's comforting in this weather. Seems everyone is doing great here and we just have to pat each other on the back so we continue to get over our hurdles. Will talk again when I have some positive numbers to share. Sounds like a wonderful plan! It's pretty cold here in Michigan, too, so enjoy some of the Myrtle Beach weather on my behalf, too, OK?
While you're there, in between bouts of enjoying more favorable weather, perhaps it would be a good time to start thinking about taking up a new hobby for sedentary times, or reviving an old one you've not had time for? Mine help me as a distraction, and they do get more of my time and energy in the blustery months.
Particularly good are things that require clean hands, like needlework, sketching, or playing a musical instrument; or create dirty hands, like carpentry or painting. Either makes it less tempting to snack, on top of the distraction.
I do some mixed-media visual journaling, make jewelry, and am trying to teach myself to play bluegrass banjo. Having a distraction to get absorbed in can really help.

LOL Your right about a distraction...when we get back and the weather is still (which I am sure it will be) the same shall have to go and dig up my Easter egg supplies. I am Ukrainian and I do the batik writing on eggs called Pysanky.....once you start you lose total track of time. I have done this art form for many years and I think this year is the perfect time to get back into it again. Thanks for reminding me of this and stay warm. In the summer we go on bus trips to Soaring Eagle casino in Mount Pleasant, Michagin. Your state is lovely like our Ontario in the summer and fall but come winter...watch out. Hi! I’ll be turning 69 next week and just started counting macros two weeks ago. All my life my weight had bounced around, but in the last three or four years I really packed on the pounds. Last year when I went for my physical my doctor told me my weight was now clinically obese. That did shock me into taking action and I lost 40 pounds by cutting calories. However, from October to January my weight plateaued, and I still had another 15 pounds to lose to reach a normal BMI. I’ve lost 3 pounds on the macro diet in the first two weeks, eating more calories while breaking through the plateau. It seems like magic, but it seems like a sustainable way to eat for the rest of my life.2

Hi, I am on day 27 of logging daily, which in itself has been a realization of what I am consuming! I just turned 64 , divorced, and had given up on shaking loose the 200 lbs. I have been carrying. As I developed more aches and pains in muscles and joints, I woke up one day , determined to do the one single thing that will help my mobility- lose weight. I work in a restaurant, and when I lift a 50 lb. potato sack, or 25 lb. of onions, I try to imagine what that does to my body when I carry that amount of excess weight! I really couldn't say what finally started me in the right direction, but I am using the MFP diary, and I would like to follow this group of 60-somethings on their journey!5

This is a fantastic thread which I am now following. I am 61 yrs old and am trying to get healthier. I am in the morbidly obese category and it is affecting my health and my joints. I have lost the same 5 to 10 pounds over and over. i figure I have lost 1000 pounds, but I still look the same. This time I am determined to lose 100 + pounds. I have set mini goals along the way. My first goal is 30 pounds less. I am almost half way there - I have lost 14 pounds in the last 21 days. What I am concentrating on first is portion control. My husband and I eat pretty healthy, but my portions are way out of control. I have set my calories at 1500 per day, for now, and as I get used to that, may lower it another 100 calories at a time. Mary and DebKing52 - I am going to use the visual of losing 14 pounds is like losing a bag of potatoes. I wouldn't want to carry a bag of potatoes all the time.... So onward and forward to losing more bags of potatoes. Friend me so we can help each other. Mary from Canada - looking forward to hearing about your trip to Myrtle Beach. Welcome to both mbippy and daklock......like you determined this time...been doing well. It's been slow about a lb every 10 to 12 days but that's OK because they are staying off. This winter has been brutal as with the snow and cold getting active has been almost non existent that's why looking forward to this trip. Keeping myself honest by logging everything that enters this body the good and bad and keep going...and portion control is the other mainstay. Getting pretty good at visulizing a deck of cards of meat or index finger of cheese...prefer the kitchen scale though much more accurate but if not at home helps to visualize. So we shall help each other. Like you girls have quite a ways to go and those numbers are so daunting (sigh) but I figure I've gotten rid of one bag of potatoes and let's try for another and then after that another. Your lucky Daklock your winter is mild, we are currently in the middle of a Alberta clipper which is dumping on us like crazy so a little nervous as we leave on Thursday. Mary from Ontario, Canada2

Just started mfp this month and would appreciate everyone's support. I'm 74 and have about 90 lbs to lose. Have been logging food and exercise (not enough, though) daily and find it really helps to hold myself accountable. I've been pretty sedentary this winter due to the weather and look forward to spring. So far I've lost 2 pounds and gained 1 back. Thought I could lose 5 lbs/month but I've realized I need to add more exercise to do that.2

Hi everyone...well that Alberta clipper came...dumped...and left and today nice and sunny but da...n cold and going to get worse. Weighed in this morning and was relieved didn't gain any and didn't lose any either. That's OK as been house bound so not doing much except packing. I am eating low carb so staying under 80 gms per day and proud to say have sustained it. I do miss my noodles or rice or potatoes as a side dish or in soups but have been subbing shirataki noodles which is "0" carbs and minimal calories and because it's a fibre fills you up. It's been a god send for me (my daughter found these...love that girl)...... so passing on this tidbit to you ladies. Another lady gave me a site that has a lot of info on them it's healthline.com/nutrition/shirataki noodles. If you have an asian grocery store in your town they carry them...our Walmart even has them... and all you need is rinse them in hot water a number of times and keep in frig and use. The rinsing and then boiling or dry pan frying instructions are kind of over kill...did it at the beginning but not needed. There is a discussion on these noodles in main discussion under community. For example today's lunch was 1 cup of homemade chicken broth, 1 cup of veggies(broccoli/cauliflower/carrot/diced chicken) this hot soup was poured over 3/4 cup shiritoki noodles. It was tasty, looked good and very filling at only 114 calories and 16 carbs. so that's my tip for today. I've read some people "yuck" them but I tried them and like so try and judge for yourself.
