Ive run a half and I was not very pleased with my time but was feeling the high of actually finishing. This year I'm signed up for a half and a full so I REALLY want to do well on both. I started Hal Higdons Novice one marathon training plan a bit early so I can taper back down after finishing it to be ready for the half but still be used to long miles for the full a month later.
Tonight I have a 7 mile run but here is what I have so far this month!
5/1- 3 miles
5/2- 3 miles
5/5 - 6 miles
5/6 - 3 Miles
5/8 - 3 miles
5/10 - 3 miles
5/12 - 7 miles
Total 28 miles/Goal 55 Miles
Looking forward to logging these miles with you all feel free to add me!
Welcome! Hal's novice plans are great for getting a novice from "I can not run X distance" to "I completed a race in X distance" - if you can already do the race distance, and really care about doing it faster, you might want to look at some of the plans higher up his skill chain. It just depends on where you are actually at, your goals, and your dedication. All of which only you truly know.
Well my mental ability stops at 13.1, Ive never run further than that so I want to get over the hurdle of "holy cow, I can actually run this far" for the full before I start truly pressing for time. The half however I really want to try and get under two hours this time.5 -
Great job finishing your 1st HM @samthepanda!2

Saturday Morning Run Crew 12 km - The first real day with spring/summer like conditions. When you go from 0C temps to +12C overnight the body complains about the heat. Was really feeling the heat build up in the last km as that is when I turned and it was directly on my back = instant thermal absorption - like when a dog lays down in a sun spot and starts to pant.
Sunday Morning run Crew 7.5 km up Misery Mtn Spine. Walked the steepest sections but managed to run 90% of the hill. Did a loop up top as I was the first one to the peak and then went over to the Zig-Zag Balance beams ( old logs supported on stumps about knee high above the ground) lots of bounce in the logs so a real challenge to walk the whole length without taking a tumble. Still a lot of fun to do as it gives all of us a good laugh watching each other, one of the ladies has tunnel vision in one eye so has limited depth perception and says " it's really easy when you bring Running poles". So we all tried it with one eye closed to mimic the loss of depth perception - Fail didn't even get 1/2 way across the first log and I lost balance. There are actually quite a few obstacles setup permanently on the Hill to encourage people to get out and try new challenges.
Next event for me is called MaGoo's Madness - 4 x 5km(ish) loops on a group of Riverbank Hills May 26.
05/01 22.00 km - 22.00km -118.00km - YTD 301.90km
05/04 10.00 km - 32.00km -108.00km - YTD 311.90km
05/08 5.00 km - 37.00km -103.00km - YTD 316.90km
05/11 12.00 km - 49.00km -091.00km - YTD 328.90km
05/12 7.50 km - 56.50km - 83.50km - YTD 336.40km
Welcome to some new participants in the challenge @Eddie_Ice , @tess453 and @MsJourno!
Congratulations to @midwesterner85 on your marathon.
@eleanorhawkins well done on your race - solid strategy - slow and steady for survival!yesterday I decided to start 30 days of running! 30 days, 30 runs, any distance.
Has anyone done this and got any tips?
@AlphaHowls is probably the best person for run streak - just don't try to run her distance's.9 -
eleanorhawkins wrote: »Race report:
This morning was the 3rd and final race in our local series, 3 times round the riverside park for a total of 7km. Although I've often laughed at the memes asking why one would want to pay to run someone you can run for free every day of the year, there was something for running a race on ground I'm so familiar with (like knowing which bits of grass hide holes and which are safe to run on instead of sticking to the brick path). My husband decided he was coming, so I knew from the start it was going to be more of an easy training run than a race for me. Ok, that is what my physio wanted me to do anyway, she made me promise not to race it hard as the furthest I've done since December is 8km anyway and that was at easy pace.
So we positioned ourselves at the very very back of the pack, a couple of metres behind everyone else. There were a couple of young (probably late teens) English-speaking girls wearing stupid pink sports bras and skimpy shorts in front of us who looked us up and down and laughed, which upset me a bit as my psoriasis and still not being used to not being the fat one makes me very self conscious. Tried to ignore them, but more about them later.
Our plan was to go slow and steady and just finish the race, we had agreed to run for 5 minutes or so and then I'd turn on my interval timer for us to run-walk-run it. It was actually almost 1km when we decided it was time to start the bleeper, which I had set to 90 second run, 30 second walk intervals. I was still deliberately jogging at a very easy pace, but we had passed a few people anyway. After the first couple of intervals husband said he was feeling good and suggested we only took every second walk break, so we did 3 and a half minute run, 30 second walk intervals for the rest of the first lap and around half the second. By then he was starting to look red in the face but still going, I thought he was slowing down but he later told me actually he thought I sped up. We completed our second lap ok, but he was pretty spent by then. At the 5km mark he told me he was going to walk the rest and grudgingly agreed I should go ahead and continue running. I stuck to my 90-30 intervals until km 6, but I was feeling really strong so was running harder during the runs. I passed a guy surrounded by paramedics who had fallen and hurt his shoulder (or that's what it looked like) and a little further ahead there was a woman unconscious on the ground, again surrounded by paramedics. I was glad at that point that I had taken it easy. Then, just after the 6km mark, I saw those 2 girls ahead of me. They were stopping and starting and looked from a distance to be struggling. Well I bet you can guess what thought came into my head.
Yeah, s*d physio, s*d taking it easy, s*d everything in fact but getting past those two judgemental little biatches who laughed at me at the start. So I started to push and overtook them around half a mile from the finish line. One final (very fast so they didn't catch me again) walk break and I decided that was it, no more walking. I didn't sprint the final stretch but I did run it harder than the rest of the race (my pace over the last km was around 1 minute faster than the others according to Strava). The clock read 51.35 as I crossed the line, so yeah slow but I'm still very happy with the way I ran it. It felt absolutely wonderful to have plenty left in the tank to finish strong, and showing silly young ladies in bikinis that scabby old women can beat them was AWESOME :-)
Woo hooo go you! And yeah for kicking those girls butt's!3 -
Hi all,
Stumbled across this today and will join late if that's ok!
I completed a sprint tri a few weeks ago and have sat on my *kitten* for 2 weeks eating cake ever since. So in a bid to not let my training go to waste and kick a few pounds before a wedding in June, yesterday I decided to start 30 days of running! 30 days, 30 runs, any distance.
Has anyone done this and got any tips?
Here's my totals so far:
5/11- 3.1 miles
5/12 - 3.53 miles
Total: 6.63 miles
Skip the wedding. Marriage is overrated. 😧🤭😀
Ok for reals. We do engage in food talk here (mostly pizza and pie), and we’ll gladly support your goal. We do have a side thread that is dedicated to helping us stay ion track with our personal food goals. You are welcome to join us there too. (I’ll come back to add the link). No particular rules, just a way to find support and lean on one another.
Did you or anyone request to join the Strava group? I declined it. Trying to keep the group honestly mfp runners. If so, send another request, might post here that you requested to join so I don’t feel all grumpy about letting just anyone in.
@Eddie_Ice welcome to the group! Best of luck attaining that sub 2 hm goal, I have the same goal.
Wish me luck all, I’m off to the pool (Y and weights sans right leg). Like I mentioned, I’m feeling especially grumpy today. Dh took me to lunch, i don’t like people. Today is a bad people day. So many people. And they dress wieerd.6 -
samthepanda wrote: »Today was my first half marathon and I am very happy to say I completed! Apologies if this post makes little sense - my brain is quite addled. I kept my usual breakfast of porridge and added immodium. The weather forecast was for it to be about 6 degrees at 9.00am this morning - it was wrong! I had dug out several layers that I didn't mind discarding but it was clear blue skies and about 14 degrees by 9.00 and it got hotter and hotter. I had arranged someone I met on the event FB group as we were both running alone and going for the same time. By the time of queued for the loo and met it was nearly time. I had a bag with spare layers but I couldn't find the baggage store so I thought I'd have to take it with me. Fortunately I saw hubby as we were going up to the start so I passed it to him ( I was in the slowest runners group). I honestly can't remember a lot of sections -it's a blur! Warned by others who had done the race before we started slow, 2 miles in you start to climb and then there are hills for the next few miles. We saw them (and the heat) take out a few people. We kept the same slow pace and it paid dividens as we only had a couple of walk breaks. We kept in the shade while we could, took on regular water.I was worried about my IBS playing off so despite the many lovely treats that were offered on the way I just took on a couple of jelly babies. There was so much support on the course it was lovely. We reached Mile 9 which was uncharted territory for me. I was a bit nervous but I onesie road and I knew it was mainly flat now to the end and the was beautiful section past the abbey. I missed the 12 mile marker altogether so was happily surprised when one of the stewards said it was half a mile to go! So pleased to finish and feel ok, apart from couple of blisters and tired legs in 3:00:02 including one toilet stop and a selfie at the abbey. I didn't do this one for time, just to prove to myself I could. I'd like to do another (well at the moment, see how my legs feel tomorrow!) and go a bit faster. Thank you to everyone on here who has given me advice and encouragement - you are awesome!
Woo hoo well done! And congratulations for doing your first!2 -

Morning. Woke to wild weather this morning. And as the plan calls for a rest day I decided to listen. I hate wind sigh. My goal for this winter, get over my hate for wind. Got over rain last winter...
I'm taking my gym gear to work, going to try get to the gym at lunchtime, but honestly my motivation for weight training is at a zero atm. I just want to relax at lunch. Confirms that in the future, strength training at lunch is not going to happen. And that's ok.4 -
I'm just stopping by to say that you definitely witness a lot of carnage when you NEGATIVE SPLIT A MARATHON.
Race report to follow after kids go to bed14 -
Hugs. Good luck at the pool. How is the healing going?
Thanks for asking.
Short answer: I suppose it's going fine.
Longer answer, waiting for dh to find his way out of the Y.... I'm at the point that I have no idea what is normal pain and what's more damage to repair pain (seriously suspect labral tear). So emotionally, I'm trying not to feel defeated. Since class is over, i don't have anything else to focus on and I get neurotic/obsessive. Everything is cranky. Just counting the days until the next visit. Hating all these two-leggers.
I tried to talk dh into walking with me, one crutch or two. He took me swimming. I don't know if I should be out walking or not until the bone is fully healed.
I swam 26 minutes. Did not kill it, slow and easy. I'm very buoyant. I passed on the weights. I went in the weight room, a sweaty fat guy looked at me and I turned to the pool. I'm people phobic today for some reason.
I also passed up cake at lunch.

Hello all, I am just returning to running again after a 2 year hiatus. I know its late in the month, but I am still joining the group. I am hoping to at least complete 25 miles by the end of the month, fingers crossed. I would like to ask the group which is a better way to train? I did a half marathon in 2017, and this fall would like to complete another. Thank you for any advice!

Stick with it, be reasonable and consistent in your goals and allow your body time to absorb training/ recover. This is a great group and often folks find the inspiration they need to get out for those runs that are dreaded. We try to be a close nit group, so feel free to ask any questions. Hang around for our inaugural Hug a Runner challenge in November. Try to run 3-5 times a week, active walking also counts.
I started out trying to run a mile a day. Sounds easy, just a mile. I quickly learned to change the focus of my running from distance to time. I’d see people here logging monster miles and deluded myself regarding capabilities. Maybe embrace intervals as you start out and work up endurance,(example: run 3 minutes, walk 1).
Best of luck! We look forward to hearing your progress!5 -
@samthepanda congrats on your first half marathon! Well done! That's a great accomplishment and especially the part about wanting to do it again. Don't listen if your legs say no to that tomorrow
Welcome to the newcomers! Never too late to join.
@Eddie_Ice sounds like you have a good plan.
@tessa453 if you are going to streak, I would agree about keeping some days (at least once a week for sure) to just a minimum run - our coach uses 15 minutes easy running as the minimum. It counts!
@jane1729mfp what are you doing currently, how much running? Do you have a plan you are following at all?
@elise4270 it sounds like you are making progress on the recovery, I'm sure it feels very slow and frustrating. Good job on the swim. Sorry you are having a cranky people-phobic day, but you are certainly allowed to. Treat yourself to something, if not cake, something nice and not involving people!

It was a chilly and rainy day. 40ish degrees and rainy is one of my least favorites for running so I was less than eager to get out for a long run. I for sure would have skipped it completely but a couple of friends agreed to meet me for 45 minutes of it. I did a couple of miles before they got there and then a couple more at the end. The middle 4 featured very enjoyable conversation at least. I was so happy to finish and get home to a hot bath.8 -

Yes. Especially the bold part.3 -
Ok, this might be boring, but...
Weather was sunny and warmer than its been for over a week. I now have a sunburn/tan. But honestly the weather didn't bother me like it did for others.
This was my 4th marathon, and my only real hope was that for once I wanted to feel good the whole way through. This was accomplished by going at an easy pace, first with a pace group that dwindled down to three of us, then just me and the pacer (who was right on, by the way). I left him behind at 30k and started to pick up the pace and get to work pushing forward rather than holding back. It was hard. There was no wall. I ate bananas and chocolate (plus one gel and a piece of candy) and lots of sports drink and water. I passed a lot of people in the last half.
Results were a PR by about 12 minutes(!), stretch goal time broken by 3.5 minutes(!), and a negative split(!!!). But most of all, I felt STRONG the whole way through. Needless to say, I am thrilled! And want to do more!
Edited to add a picture of my view during the first 15k or so before the group started shrinking. The photographers didn't post anything good with me in it yet.Women only made up 12% of the marathoners.
Ugggh, yes it's sideways, just turn your phone (or head)!15 -
So, pt didn’t take needles to me, she took a rock. (Don’t ask me, was like graston meets quartz thing.) Was really sore Friday. Was not feeling it yesterday, despite what looked like awesome 40-50 degree weather. So, long run happened today. Still dawdled too long, so was too hot. Went to the neighboring town again, as I would have had to pass my house like 3 times in this town, and that is WAY too many chances to abort. Learning from last time, I looked a little closer at path routes, to do an out and back, not circles. I *may* have parked at a brewery, as the jumping off point for my out and back. Around 3.5 miles my intervals kind of fell apart. Was not enjoying life. It was hot. I was bargaining with myself. Thus why it is good I am not near my house, or car. Was supposed to be a long, slow, run. Inadvertently got some hiit in the middle, when this guy crossed my path. And by crossed my path inches from me. Completely harmless, but I didn’t know that when it was reaching out to touch me.
This is when I slowed down enough for a picture.
I walked a bit here trying to get my heart rate back to normal-ish. But actually after that, my intervals kind of came back together, even if they still kinda sucked.
Because, irony?? The post run beer I had at the brewery was named snake stout.
9.1 today = 30.1/50
Also.... the alternate dimension of college towns... I saw some gal trying to climb up a steep set of rickety stairs in roller blades, more dogs than I thought existed, and lots of random old cars, including a souped up, restored, glittery station wagon. People are weird.

@samthepanda Congratulations on finishing your first HM! You did awesome!
@Elise4270 Sorry you are having a grumpy day. If you dislike people, today was NOT the day to go out to eat. I'm sure all the restaurants were crowded. Good luck at the Y. Hope is went well.
@polskagirl01 CONGRATULATIONS!!! Awesome on the PR, beating your stretch goal, and negative splits!!! I can see how this would inspire you to do another one.
@hanlonsk I agree that is a good reason to not run circles near your house. I do out and backs often. I'm usually ok on the way out. Having to get back home is great motivation on the way back. LOL Glad the snake didn't actually reach out and touch you. (BTW, when I read your description before I saw the picture, I thought you were talking about a human guy and was wondering why some random guy would be trying to touch you while you were running.)3 -
@samthepanda and @polskagirl01 Congratulations on your outstanding performances!!3

I am on day 377. I do not really have any tips. I have built up over time. I run slow, even and I do not push anything but my distance. I am not into speed. I do not recommend anyone running on a daily basis, unless it is your desire to do so. Rest is important and listening to your body will keep the injuries down.

@polskagirl01 Congratulations on smashing your marathon PR!! Sounds like you trained well and executed your race plan perfectly! Great, great job!2

May goal: 75 miles
5/1: 5.04 miles
5/2: 2.19 miles
5/7: 4.60 miles
5/8: 4.70 miles
5/9: 4.55 miles
5/12: 8.41 miles
29.49/75 miles completed
Last long run before the HM next week. I ran 8.41 miles. It started out chilly and foggy, but then the clouds broke and I was wishing I had worn a tank top instead of a t-shirt. But it was a really lovely day. And the ankle was good. I don't know if I have just rested it enough, or if the KT tape really works. Either way I was relieved that there was no pain and I am feeling good about the race on Saturday. I'll have to go back and catch up on the thread. I know there were lots of good races this weekend. I hope all you moms out there had a great Mother's Day!
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17
5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon8 -
So many great races! Congrats @samthepanda @eleanorhawkins and @polska_girl !
Ran / walked 10k today, looking at the stats later, I did more running than walking - about four miles running. Very very slow, 13 minute mile pace overall, about 11 minutes when running, sometimes slower. But I’m so happy to have gotten out there for something approaching a real run. I hope I don’t pay for it later, my Achilles has tightened up and I’m icing it. It seems like my bad knee and the sore Achilles (which is on the same side) are working together, the knee seems to be putting more pressure on the tendon and vice versa.
Perfect running weather, 65 degrees and partly sunny with a soft, flower laden breeze. Fortunately I don’t get hay fever because everything is blooming. We saw dozens of deer, including one family of four which we ran straight through - literally six feet away from us, all standing stock still and staring right at us as if we were dressed funny or something. We also saw a big bunny, and another shrew. Oh, I almost forgot, we stopped to help a tortoise which was stuck under a chicken wire fence.
The shrew we saw today behaved normally (scarpered off and disappeared into the leaves) unlike the last one we saw which chased us around trying to attack our shoes. I did some research on shrews and apparently they are very territorial and it’s not unusual to be attacked if a shrew thinks you are in its territory, it’s just that they are very small and their territories are also very small, so mostly it doesn’t come up. However, it’s odd that the aggressive one’s territory included the middle of the paved bicycle path!
We stopped for bbq later and I let myself go a little wild on carbs, hoping this slow little run would be enough to cover it, and turns out it was! 110 bg at 90 minutes after eating 89g carbs! I love running. Walking the same distance, half that amount of carbs would spike me. It’s super hard to have the discipline to give my tendon enough rest to repair properly when running is so closely tied to what I can eat.7 -
Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon race report. Fair warning - I took lots of pictures!
My morning started out a bit off as the coffee maker in the room wouldn’t work (I ended up making a little bit of coffee with just hot water from the sink). Then the oatmeal I normally get from Starbucks has changed (how dare they!) to a different consistency oats (gritty) and no nuts, seeds now with dates and cranberries, and no brown sugar only agave syrup. Uggg, I ended up only eating about half of it if that, but I did eat a banana that I had saved. I have also been having some weird unidentified aching in my thighs/quads that I notice mostly at night and woke up with them aching. I did try rolling them out, hoping it would help before I head out to catch the shuttle to the race start and once there I walked and ran a bit to warm up.
This was a pretty small race compared to the HMs I have run previously, only about 1500 entries, but I was surprised when I got to the start line about 40 mins before the start to find no one there! It was a very pretty morning and kind of cool to see it so empty. Naturally it didn’t stay that way and soon filled up with runners.I lined up behind the 2:45 pacer knowing that this was a ‘hopeful’ if not realistic pace for where I am at the moment. I was really just hoping to finish under 3 hours and knew I could not possible hit a PR at under 2:15. I planned to keep to my 2.5 min run/30 sec walk intervals as much as possible and walk the water stations regardless. It was a very well supported race with 7 water/electrolyte stations with porta pots at each although fortunately despite having so many GI issues in the previous few weeks, I did not end up needing to stop. I kept with the 2:45 pacer at least in near sight for most of the 1st 6 miles even with the intervals. The weird aching in my legs continued and was really bothersome and was making me have thoughts that I was doing something terrible to them.About mile 6.5 despite the gradual incline we hit the one really big hill called the ‘corkscrew’ I tried to run as much of it as I could at the beginning and quickly realized that was not going to happen and walked along with the vast majority of other runners. This was also where I lost sight of the 2:45 pacer. I stopped to take a picture about midway up the hill and had another runner ask to take a picture so we traded. The views were spectacular and continued as we went up and over the crest. After walking up the hill and starting the downhill my quads finally started to feel a bit better. I was with a group of other runners who were also mostly running intervals (none of us in-synch though) and a couple of girls were stopping to take selfies at each mile marker as well as each winery sign. By mile 10 or so my feet were really starting to hurt from the rough asphalt and started trying to keep as much as possible to the dirt on the side of the road. My hamstrings and quad were also complaining and I stopped a couple of times just to stretch. I kept thinking that while I hadn’t seen the 2:45 pacer for a long while but I also hadn’t seen the 3:00 pacer and never did.
Check out the runners below on the road in the valleyIt was great coming back into town and seeing the cheering crowds and my husband waiting at the finish line.
Our cheering squad!
There was no chocolate milk in the finish line goodie bag so we hobbled over to a liquor store and got some Nestles! My legs were absolutely toast! Every single step hurt but the chocolate milk helped so much! We got our wine glasses and headed over to the post-race wine festival and tasting. It was incredibly crowded with long lines at each winery tasting. These things always sound really great in theory but not so much when it comes to reality. I really just wanted to go get a shower and something to eat so we didn’t stay long and headed back to the hotel. After a nice long soak in the tub with some Epsom salts we headed out for a burger and a small beer at a local brewery for my celebratory dinner!!Race Swag! Not shown - Mortensen's Danish Bakery cookies not shown because I ate themI met my goal of under 3 hours (2:55 official time) and I am ok with that. Now I have to start working on picking up some speed and getting ready for my next race in September. I see lots of hill repeats in my future!12 -
@shanaber that looks like a really fun race! Great job!0

OK. Race report.
I was nearly late to the start line, so I had a rushed breakfast, rushed bag drop and rushed journey to my corral. Was only standing there for a few minutes before gun time. The race was quite crowded, and I somehow got pulled along with the crowd to a 6:26 pace until I realized my mistake and backed down. Oops.
I was feeling the heat for the first half, but it was windy enough that the temp didn't bother me. Took walk breaks through all the aid stations. Something got into my shoe at 10km, so stopped to shake it out. Must've done something weird to my sock at that point, because it promptly started cutting into my toes and gave me a blister (these are two-year-old Injinjis that I've raced in multiple times, dunno what happened).
Started raining on and off at around 13km, which is also the point that the organizers thought people would need sprayers to cool them off. Yay for everybody looking like they'd been dumped in a pool. Also a reminder that, for all its merits, my Mizunos do not have an abundance of grip. Ah well.
Lost a bit of speed after 18km (obviously reaching the outer limits of my stamina), but managed to finish in 2:28:43, which nicely surpasses my goal of 2:30. Met up with girlfriend at the finish - she'd somehow elbowed her way right to the front and got me a nice finishing video looking like a very happy, very wet [insert furry animal of your preference]. Got my chocolate milk and went home to eat All The Carbs.
Splits for anyone interested:10 -

I couldn't get to sleep last night and am now home with a sick kid today. Is it naptime yet?6
