There is a limit to the number of times you can reasonably hint that you could use a watch for a fathers day present.
I got a watch for Mother's Day last year. I had to say point blank to my husband, "The girls want to buy me a Garmin for Mother's Day, I think that's a fabulous idea, can we go and choose one on Saturday?".
Honestly, speaking for men out there everywhere, I wish more people were this clear. AND I wish more people listened to people that are this clear.
I have an Amazon wishlist with items on it from a few $ to well over a hundred dollars. What to get me something I actually want or need and will be happy to get? Pick one, or even an Amazon gift card and I will pick one. Literally last Christmas I told someone "do not by me a hat, I just got a very nice wool one" = and they bought me a hat for Christmas. It is still sealed in its package someplace in a box. Would have been better they got me nothing.
Sorry... I am starting to rant, I think I will put myself to bed now.
I grew up with a lot of boys. I learned early on that boys/men don't do subtlety or hints. Life is so much easier and happier for everyone if you are straight up and clear with them. So many women don't get this, it's mind boggling.
Yeah, I don't think this is exclusively a gendered thing - I've had boyfriends who didn't listen to me when I said I didn't want something for a gift, or that I wanted a specific thing ("Of course you must want flowers/a spa day/jewelry you'll never wear!"). I think people just need to be better about listening to each other generally.eleanorhawkins wrote: »I desperately want a Garmin too... When I 'joked' about thinking it was a Garmin my husband told me not to be so *kitten* dumb, like he's spend that much money on a present for me. Well, that certainly told me!
What a hurtful thing to say! *hugs*

Well thats just crap. Makes me wanna buy you one. Which one ya want? And is it US shipping? Pm me a link. And address.
I am currently very lucky to have the financial set up we have right now. Things will change and I won't necessarily always have the financial freedoms, but I sure enjoy having my own secret account for crap I just want or I just gotta have, tires, 500$ car
battery, maybe a new bra, college classes... oh maybe some shoes...
Look. Some of them are "cheap"1 -
Re directly spelling out what you want as a gift: a co-worker at a previous company once said that he told his wife he wanted a box for Christmas. So she bought him a flag pole. Just think about that for a second...I honestly don't know who was trolling who in that household.
It was a pleasant morning for a run today. Also, I now have the next four days off from work, so I'm trying to decide if I want to be active lazy (go for a run and then do nothing), or lazy lazy (stay in bed and then do nothing). Decisions decisions.

Not sure if I will get to run later or not, but it has been many days since I last updated, so I figured I better get back on the stick.

[quote=Tonight is my first club run. 6 miles with them, speed word and hills. I don't have a clue how to fuel for an evening run. I usually run fasted (anything below 5 miles) since I run early early early. Suggestions? [/quote]
I also run fasted for shorter runs (but I have a stomach condition called gastroparesis that prevents me from digesting food at a normal rate. It also causes vomiting if I'm not careful. )
While training for longer runs I've learned that a banana and peanut or almond butter works really well for me as I'm able to digest it quickly.
During the run I eat fruit leather (Trader Joe's and Target have good store brands). I've stopped using GU but I really like SIS energy gels--they don't require water and are easily digestible (for me this is key). They are usually quite expensive but I buy them on Amazon when they have deals. They are actually running a sale now and aren't any more expensive than any other energy gel at the going price.
I plan to start experimenting with Teddy Grahams (no kidding!). My daughter had them as a leftover daycare snack this week and I couldn't resist munching on them. I didn't get sick while running after eating a handful so they might just be a good go-to.
cross training day (indoor cycling) - 50 minutes

Days three and four of my running break have gone fairly well. I’ve been feeling sore the last couple of days, especially in my legs, although my back wasn’t too happy last night either. I did almost an hour of yoga yesterday split between three videos, including one specifically for upper back pain that really hit the spot.
I also did a strength class yesterday afternoon, modified to avoid impact. This is a big reason why I consider this gym worth the extra expense - all I had to do was show up, let the trainer know what was going on, and they gave me the appropriate modifications on the spot. No excuses to skip working out, and no research necessary.
I’ve done less yoga today but a little more walking - to the chiropractor, to my husband’s office downtown after getting my hair done, then from home to the farmer’s market and back. A little over 10K steps, which is good for me now that I’m working from home. I’m feeling good after the chiropractor’s visit and hoping for a good night sleep. I haven’t felt any pain in my shin today and it’s really hard to resist a little jog to test it, but I’m being good.
June Total: 17.32 miles
Revised June Goals: Lift 3x/week, 30 minutes/day of moderate cardio, 30 minutes/day of mobility. Run when I can.5 -
@kgirlhart - Thanks! Hobbes is a happy, happy boy but I think the big issue is training. He didn't just end up that way. It takes work and we continue to train and work. I don't go on a run or walk without treats/kibble in my pocket and he knows if he does well and behaves he gets a treat. We met a worker on the trail today and Hobbes being mister social immediately when to love up on him, get some pets, lean against him and then thought about jumping up to lick his face but he stopped and of course got a treat.
@eleanorhawkins - I too hope you bought that Garmin for yourself!
@hist_doc - you might check out Skratch Labs energy chews as well. I like them better than GUs as they aren't messy and I let them dissolve in my mouth. The fruit leather does sound like a great way to fuel and I may check that out as an option.
I had a fantastic run today! It was overcast and cool again (YAY!) after the hot hot weather we have had. It was humid but not muggy at all and there was a lovely breeze. This run just felt great! My legs felt good and I actually got a bit of tempo going!!

@shanaber It's all about training. And owner attitude. Some dogs, like children, are more sociable/outgoing/boisterous or whatever than others. Not an excuse. Trouble is some people don't care, or are just plain clueless. This guy was walking a dog that is of a size that requires a muzzle to be loose in public here without even a collar on. Also, this was on a trail with massive signs at each banning dogs from being allowed to run loose on it as it's a nesting area. So no respect for the rest of the human race or nature either.
@MegaMooseEsq my situation is similar to yours (work from home, very long hours at the desk) and I find pilates/yoga-type stuff essential for my back. As long as I keep that up I'm fine, but as soon as I miss a couple of days, I find I can't turn over in bed at night without squealing. Well done on resisting the trying to run and see urge, that isn't easy even when you know it makes sense!
@Avidkeo how are you feeling?
About the Garmin. Firstly, @Elise4270 you have a heart that is bigger than you but no way could I accept that! I currently have a fitbit (he doesn't know how much that cost either! gotta love marriage sometimes) that is about a year old. When it dies, I will replace it with a Garmin. To this end, I am saving up every bit of loose change he leaves in his pockets, change from groceries, etc etc. I could have afforded to get myself one with a little bit of money my great-aunt left me when she died. But I spent it on tickets to the Bon Jovi concert in Madrid next month. And a hotel room there, and train tickets to get there. I've been waiting 25 years to see Bon Jovi in concert. And it's almost here! 3 weeks and 2 days to go!!!! Not that I'm counting!!!! Can you tell I'm excited, much? lol
No run for me today. Friday is my rest day. Plus I have to get to the city to pick up my T-shirt and number for tomorrow night's race. Feeling a little more confident I can finish under the cutoff time now, not sure my legs will approve of me doing so though. Oh well.

This is so true. I always tell people, there are no bad dogs only bad owners.3 -
@hist_doc 80%of the people in my family have gastroparesis. It is not fun. I have escaped it so far...
@eleanorhawkins bon jovi... in Madrid? Like spain?????? My jealousy is even jealous. Have so much fun. (P.s...marriage is hard. Money stuff makes it even harder; I get it.)
Just finished 6.2 miles on the TM at a 1% incline with some lovely strides and speed work thrown in and my Garmin was not matching my pace at all. Inthink it is time to invest in a foot pod. Does anyone have one? Ya like it?

@RunnerGirl238 I live on the southern coast of Spain :-) Last time they came here was 9 or 10 years ago... I had a small child and even less money than now. So yeah, 25 years I've been waiting for this.
Did I mention it's only 3 weeks and 2 days away at all? Apologies in advance for the amount of excitement and counting down of days y'all are going to have to endure from me ;-)

Bon Jovi Sounds like an awesome splurge and celebration of your great aunts life! I bought a not terribly expensive violin when my dad died. Funny how music speaks to the soul. I thought you might be in Europe. I never realized Spain was so beautiful until last week, watching a show where retirees had their illegally built homes knocked down in Spain, guess the government there is against foreign retirees. I’d move there, if I could keep a home. Absolutely stunning. I should buy you a Garmin and come to Spain. Hahaha!3 -

@Elise4270 Lol when I was around 8 years old they made us take a music exam at school, and the 4 most musically talented kids (which somehow I was one of???) were given free violin lessons. I was so freakin awful at playing the violin that my mother used to tell me "Honey why don't you go and do your violin practise in the garage? The rabbits really love to hear you"
Spain is beautiful and the Spanish are great people. If you want to see photos of the area I often post them on my Facebook, add me there!
The government doesn't hate foreigners at all, in fact it loves them because they bring a lot of money into the country. It just hates illegal buildings. Those stories are very sad, people buy without checking what they're buying, and by the time they realise that their 6 bedroom villa with private heated swimming pool, garage for 4 cars and helipad is registered as a tool shed and is within a protected nature area where building is forbidden it's too late to back out. Usually if they bothered to either learn the language or employ someone who knows the language and the regulations they would not end up in those messes.
Btw property is cheap here, and so is life compared to many places. And if you came to visit I'd let you bring me one! Downside is we're about 15 years behind the rest of the world in progress and technology. And groups like Bon Jovi only come to play here every 10-15 years, and then they only usually go to Madrid or Barcelona. Like everywhere, it has its pros and cons.

I'd been trying to get yoga to click for a couple of years when I discovered that fitting 5-10 minute yoga videos into my work day gave me so much more energy and focus than anything I'd tried before. Now I'm hooked, although I still haven't done anything longer than a half an hour at a time. Every little bit counts!
On the marriage bit, I guess all I can say is that every relationship has its own challenges, and I hope that the good sides outweigh the bad. And Spain sounds amazing - I too would love to visit someday!2 -
@eleanorhawkins and @elise4270 - My mom and stepdad lived in Spain while he worked in Algeria. They rented a tiny house in a village on the island of Mallorca. They walked to the local markets for fresh fish and veggies, local olives and almonds and bought wine straight from the barrel (BYOB and cork 😊) It was amazing but like @eleanorhawkins said with some downsides. They were over an hour away from the main/big town (Palma) and had only a very basic healthcare clinic who didn't recognize that my mom was having a heart problem. She is buried there in the place she loved! My daughter went to visit her gravesite which was difficult to find and met so many wonderful people who helped her. She is fluent in Spanish even though the dialect is a bit different she could communicate easily. She spent a couple of weeks traveling around the mainland as well. Loved it there.6

This morning I did 4.8 miles run/walk. 5 min walk/8 min run intervals, then uphill run/downhill walk intervals.
Thinking about adding 3 full body strength training workouts 3 times a week on my walking days.
Maybe ...
bodyweight squats
stepups
bridges
dumbbell rows or lat pulldowns
bench or dumbbell flys
military press or dumbbell raises
Also trying to change my diet. Doing 2-3 eggs and fruit for breakfast/2 tuna pouches lunch/ about 1000 cals for dinner (I'm a night eater) and then greek yogurt with fruit before bed.

Notes medical needs and employment opportunities in Spain... maybe @workaholic_nurse will come too. And @Avidkeo .

I almost gave up on my running streak yesterday. It was pouring rain when I got up so I decided to wait to run until the evening. Then I went to the funeral of my cousin’s 9-month old baby. It was so hard to see that baby lying in that tiny casket and the heartbreak that the parents, grandparents and other family members were experiencing. It was really hard on my mom who had also experienced the loss of a child (my 18-year old sister to leukemia). Meningitis had caused brain damage in Baby Nora. For the last 8 months of her short life, she never opened her eyes or cried. She was fed with a feeding tube so her body kept growing and she was beautiful. The only consoling thought that I hold onto is my belief that she is now in heaven and her body is made fully-whole. So, give your loved ones whether they be big or small a big old hug and tell them that you love them!
@shanaber – I took a Mediterranean cruise a few years ago. We boarded in Barcelona and arrived a couple of days early to be tourists. I loved Barcelona. Our first stop on the cruise was Palma de Mallorca. Such a beautiful place. I would love to go back to Spain and see some of the less populated areas.
I’m registered for a 5K in the morning but I may end up walking it instead of running. Me and two of my friends have run this race since it first started three years ago. It is a small race to raise money to restore a local theatre. One of the friends is recovering from a car accident so I plan to walk with her if she doesn’t feel like running. After that we’re planning on doing some hiking. The weather is supposed to be sunny with a high of 85. A great day to be alive and outside! Good luck to all those racing!
