    5lb Challenge
    Oct 9 - 191.2
    Today - 189.0
    Loss - 2.2

    JFT - Tuesday Nov 5
    2L of water - 🤨 only 1.5 I think
    Log all food - 👿
15 minutes of exercise - 🤔 I think about 10 minutes dancing with Michaela. Does lifting her to twirl count as weight training? She weighs close to 45 lbs. she also thinks she’s Baby from Dirty Dancing and will run and fly at you, you’re supposed to catch her. She’s never seen the movie so I don’t know where she gets it from!
    Gratitude Journal - 🙂

    JFT - Wednesday Nov 6
    2L of water
    Log all food
    15 minutes of exercise
    Gratitude journal

I am learning more and more at work and have taken over more responsibilities. I just love my job. It’s rewarding and challenging all at the same time. I have been a manager since 2005 and this is my first time since I started working in Alberta in 1997 that I haven’t had to supervise anyone. I have to say that I’m quite enjoying it.

@bookmeister86 - I hope you have a better day today. With the lady that seemed to have a bad interview, is it possible to bring her in for a second one to see if she is more at ease? I have done that with a couple people that worked for me that I felt was quite shy. They turned out to be really great employees who just needed that little bit of belief in them.

@TerriRichardson112 - thank you, I really need to start doing the positive thinking.

@littleblackskirt - hugs to you, if you are talking to a social worker does that mean your parents will be going into assisted living?

    End of 2017: 174.6
    End of 2018: 189.2
    January 2019: 186.0
    February 2019: 187.0
    Today: 192.6

    Ongoing plans/ideas behind the cut
    1. Purchases: Look for an "ugly Christmas sweater" and a long-haired doll at thrift stores. Practice French braiding. Go to used bookstore and look for On Writing (Stephen King), Dying for a Paycheck (Robin Hardman), The Prince (tr. Tim Parks, Russell Price, or Robert Adams), The Secret Adversary (Christie).
    2. E2: What should the controlling ideas be in a study of world literature? Review world lit options. Create vocabulary lists for each unit that come from the texts used: Animal Farm, Julius Caesar, Wes Moore, I Am Malala. Find a way to incorporate changing words from one part of speech to another. Students need to know how to review multiple sources and synthesize information in order to draw a conclusion. Need practice with the difference between transitions and overlapping (at end of paragraph - "another issue is Y" vs "there are other issues besides X"). Quit using "in conclusion" and "I believe" and other writing-about-my-writing phrases. Confusion between direct/indirect objects and prepositional phrases. Use the UDHR and the Declaration of Independence to study paraphrasing; use that to front-load Machiavelli and how to deal with challenging texts. Confusion between everyday / every day and similar constructions.
    3. E1: Need practice with quoting & paraphrasing sources, identifying claims that would need support, use of last names for reference, and capitalization practice (common/proper nouns, titles). Difficulty using possessive nouns in their own writing. Honors: practice subject/object pronouns (my friend and I / my friend and me). Poetry: Revise "Songs are Poetry" handouts.
    4. Curriculum Development: Writing mini-unit. Review scholarly research on 5PE. (I think I can have this as an intro to the research unit so that they also get exposure to how quotes are integrated and cited.) Parallel structure; use of emotional language, specific detail. Use "Write About a Pebble" lesson from Atwell. How long should each unit take? Do research on characteristics: curiosity, persistence, resilience, creativity, responsibility, optimism, courage, integrity, authenticity, leadership, self-awareness, humility, compassion - others? Include grammarly check on essays! Review assessments. What is the purpose for each unit? What should the controlling ideas be in a study of world literature? Review world lit options. Schedule assessments for Fall 2019; plan out return times. Write 1 reflection weekly; type one in Classroom by Weds. Copy-paste to PB for comments due Friday. PB usernames 6 digits, no 19 or 20s, no birthdates. Homework: Online journal Mon due Tue; Reflection Tue due Wed; C&P journal in class Wed; Comments Thu due Fri. Bonus if you are the first response; further bonus if you respond to comments on your post. Grammar practice Mon & Wed; quiz Fri.
    5. Professional Development: Write blog post weekly. Comment on 3 posts each week -Tu Th Sun? Check with PSC. Talk with Z about articles and/or conference proposals. NOTE: ATTENDED PRE FLEX DAY.
    6. Medical: Dentist Apr 30 8 AM but check on meetings and RS. Onco Apr ???. PCP Schedule for July. ObG schedule for October. PCP - allergy shots?
    7. Theater: What's next?
    8. House: Mineral oil on tile spots. Check with D about ceiling.
    9. Fun: Open beading on Thursdays. Coloring at library on Tuesday. Put jewelry away. Edney Hack Nights alt Weds. ASL? Spanish/Portuguese practice? Practice piano. ROL Secret Adversary. Buy new bikes and bike rack for car.

So so happy you have found a wonderful job that is suiting you! The wait makes it extra-special, I think. Like you, I have been a manager in a past life. Work is so much simpler when I have no direct reports like now. I'm in the twilight of my career and love that.

@bookmeister86 @littleblackskirt Many hugs to both of you!

@TerriRichardson112 I love your posts this morning. Thanks for the inspiration!

    JFT Tuesday

    - On time for work
    - Journal
    - Finish logging Monday's intake
    - Check in on JFT folks
    - Log all intake
    - Do at least one thing after work instead of laying on the couch.
    - 1 Load of laundry
    - Bible Reading :( Got smashed with a head ache and settled for listening to the TV with my eyes closed.
    - Gratitude Journal :(
    - One small treat during the day. One small piece of cake in the evening.
    - No alcohol :( Had a single beer with dinner

Tuesday was pretty ok. I stuck to my plan and logged what I had. I knew my choices weren't great, but I was aware of them when I made them and I logged them. It was honestly not as a bad as I thought it was. My evening was a little off plan because of a nasty little headache, but it did mean I went to bed early. I feel more and more like the me I remember, but there is a bit of negative to that. Hopefully, I can keep it all in check until I meet with the new doc and then we can get these meds lined out to a place where I can live my best life.

    JFT Wednesday
    - On time for work :/ just inside my "on time" window of 7:30 -8:30...
    - Protein bar for breakfast
    - Catch up with JFT pals.
    - Work on XRay and Moisture Projects
    - Journal
    - Church
    - Deuteronomy 8-10
    - Gratitude Journal
    - No alcohol
    - Bed by 11:00
    - Log all of my intake G/B/U
    - One small treat in the day. One dessert in the evening.

Recap T 11/5 ~ Weather feels more like mid-Dec. than early Nov.
    1) Walked dog before work 3.55 mi 1:03:06 & stretched = happy dog & happy me
    2) Move hourly / stairs breaks / 5 somethings = Fitbit 17,836 steps, 250+ 14/14 boom! 53 floors
    3) Leftovers today / prelog meals & snacks / net calories zero / 14c water = Yay ~ did what I know is better: instead of snacking after supper (not hungry anyway), I went upstairs just before 9, got ready for bed & watched Jeopardy on DVR in bed. Felt good! Net cals -47 :) , sodium -145 :) , sugar -19, fiber exact! protein good, 12c water
    4) Complete inquiry checklist & testing  / start summary pages no time / APG sign-off no time
    5) Evening: Schwan's delivery  / boil eggs :) / wash dishes :) nice to have clear kitchen counter again / pull out winter workout gear :) some not all ~ need to get out leggings / prep weight machine for W a.m. :) / order Yaktrax other cleats s/b fine / other? digital declutter, folded hubby's work shirts & took upstairs :)
    6) Unplug 9:00 :) / FLOSS  / RETAINERS  / bed & tv off 10:20  just before 10 (forecast for 1-3" snow starting during night so x-train in basement W a.m.)

JFT W 11/6 ~ Snowing! It's going to be a lonnngg winter if this sticks around.
    1) Restarted my home-version of circuit & weight (x-training) before work = Yay me! I think the summer break with x-training was good for me, and dog & I got to be outside & enjoy lots of long walks.
    2) Move hourly / stairs breaks / 5 somethings
    3) Meals & snacks prelogged / net calories zero / 14c water
    4) Complete summary pages... all freaking 95 pages (improved / better process per ASSt. manager = NOT!) / APG sign-off
    5) To-do's: email Jen re holiday parade staging volunteer duty (decided this year will be my last... I've done this 27 years!) / check out winter market at Badger State Brewing / grocery list / check ML subscription / check RedCard acct / other?
    6) Unplug 9:00 / floss / retainers / bed & tv off 10:20 (walk dog R before work if road conditions permit)

What goofy weather we're having. Is it still autumn? Monday a.m. it was raining. Today (Wed.) it is snowing. Very thankful hubby and I pushed hard on yardwork during last Oct. weekends when weather was more seasonal. Only have to put rakes & containers in shed once we finish raking last of leaves to fall, if we even do that this year.

@cory17 My retirement "countdown" list is pretty simple:
    • age 62 & eligible for SS benefits = done (Oct. 2019)
    • vest 100% in 401(k) at work (Jan. 2021)
    • age 64 for increased SS benefits (Oct. 2021)
    • age 65 for Medicare (I am health insurance holder for myself & hubby and he's 2+ years younger ~ we may purchase coverage for him ourselves, we've done that when I was consulting)
    • age 66 higher SS benefits (Oct. 2023)
    • age 66 1/2 my full retirement age for SS (April 2024)
    • I do not intend to work past April 2024 & hubby will be 64
We don't have any plans to downsize until we feel we don't want to maintain our two-story house and the yard. We have never considered relocating, since we love living in WI, and both our families are here. Hubby and I both have personal hobbies that have been neglected during our working years that we want to take up again. I will continue to sing in choir and volunteer, and hopefully we will travel occasionally. That's it! What's your list like?
Locked in co healthcare a year ago.
Find a better tax state then Ca - looking, this is one of issues. Our kids are scattering, and where we currently live is getting so crowded and hostile. dh wants a location where he can continue to work w/same co, would like along the coast, and wants to upgrade :( . This is a big stress, don't see the point, or the need, don't want any more cost, and who would be taking care of it.
I've gone for planning and at 62 1/2 to 63 will maximize. That's about 4 more years, health issues the last few years have me focusing on the goal even more.
Don't even know what else should be in there.

You are very fortunate to have healthcare locked in. That's the main reason I'm still working, for the medical benefits. We have our mortgage paid off, we tend to live below our means, and hubby (and I) hate to borrow so we have no other loans outstanding. Financially we are ready. But the cost of healthcare!

7 1/2 years ago, when my company of 31+ years "eliminated my position" I was forced to use a COBRA plan (VERY expensive). Then I worked new job as employee but only when contract work was available. When I worked, we had medical insurance; when I had no contract, it was back to COBRA. Very frustrating & expensive switching back and forth, sometimes every month! So my last year of contract work, hubby & I got our own medical insurance from insurance agency specialists in medical insurance.

Now for almost five years, we have good, low-premium medical insurance through my present job. This fall my employer announced if employees participated in the annual Health Risk Assessment (HRA) in 2019, starting in 2020 the employer will pay 100% of medical insurance premiums. Great news, I always do the HRA b/c it's free blood work-up and I pay a lower premium. Next year will be like a pay raise of $2,000.

If all goes well and God-willing, I will retire when I turn 65 in three years. I'm not going to wait to reach full retirement age for SS benefits, and will at least have Medicare for myself (not hubby for two more years).

I sense hormonal pregnant lady *backs away slowly* lol jokingggg

If it's something you would of normally rationalised, but you can't this time. It's hormones. And that's why you're getting frustrated at every possible angle and it's just confusing lol!

For some reason when I was pregnant I HATED the dog? Like wtf did he do LOL!
But yeah as soon as baby was born and I recovered and everything settled, I was fine with him again. It was totally weird.

@littleblackskirt - hugs to you, if you are talking to a social worker does that mean your parents will be going into assisted living?

@Snowflake, no, the social worker is there to find a care package for my father so that he can come home from hospital. That would mean a carer coming into the house 3 or 4 times a day for a short time to help with whatever he needs. I don't know how long this will work for, as he is only going to get worse, but it will be nice for him to be home. He has been very worried about agreeing to this as he isn't sure if he can manage, he can't just change his mind and go back to the cottage hospital.

I'm really pleased that you found a job you love, you deserve it after all the effort you put in :)

I seem to be losing it lately....I could have sworn I had goals from yesterday on here, but I must've had good intentions and then no time? I guess it doesn't matter since I have decided to go back to square one. I was doing well with habits for a while there, and then with the stress our familly went through this summer I got so far off track that I can't seem to pull it together again.

So, my plan is to reboot. I am going to start out with simple but important goals. I need to go back to the beginning and build good foundational habits if I want to be successful. And I AM going to be successful!

I'll hop back on later! Just have a few minutes here and I spent it reading up on everyone! :)

It was her second interview, actually. We give people two interviews, one where we just talk more generally about their CV and the second where we actually get them to do a presentation which tests their technical knowledge and experience. We often find that good talkers talk their way through the first one but demonstrate that they don't actually have the technical knowledge in the second. Her presentation - and also the questions we asked her about specific requirements where we weren't sure she had enough experience - showed that she just didn't have the experience, or at least she failed to show us that she did. We did probe her and try to help her out quite a bit so I think if she had had the knowledge it would have come out. To be honest, we weren't that impressed with her CV in the first place but we thought we'd give her the benefit of the doubt to see if there was more than her CV was showing. Seems there wasn't, which is a shame.

The whole thing is very frustrating. Basically, because of business uncertainty, we were only given the permission to recruit someone for a 1 year contract. This reduces the pool of candidates because most people want a permanent job. So candidates are typically not as good. And yet, because they are only for one year, we want them to be BETTER - because we don't want to have to spend six months training them up for them to only stay for six months more!

It's ridiculous. We discussed afterwards that if we'd been recruiting for a permanent role we might have invested in her and trained her up a bit. But for one year, and given we are in such a mess resource wise (i.e. we just don't have enough people), we really just need someone to come in and hit the ground running! (But they don't want to apply, because they want permanent roles). Baaaaah.

Tomorrow we are leaving to see our son... and I am still sick with this awful cold. As a result, I am drinking orange juice, and pretty much eating junk stuff!!!!
So I need to get back on track before I end up gaining too much back.

SO my goals for this weekend will be the goals I need to really work on
    1. mindful eating
    2. concentrate on water
    3. eat only 1/2 of whatever I order... portions are always so large, stop before I am stuffed.
    4. I am bringing along goodies to eat in the car .. some of those goodies are pumpkin and zucchini bread. Only eat 1 piece if any, and then eat the other stuff .. the protein shake, apples, etc. Keep calories in mind.

Yesterday was ok in the end. Work was thoroughly annoying and is just making me exhausted. Everything is ridiculous and just really hard work. But I had a good trip to the consultant in the afternoon for a check up which showed there is nothing that requires action at the moment (I had operations two years ago for a gynaecological condition that reoccurs), which was a relief. So that made the day!

Today will be challenging food wise as it's another leaving do. (It's actually a quadruple leaving do - did I mention that things are a bit rubbish at work?!). My plan is to eat before I go (leftovers from yesterday dinner) and take a sensible snack to eat on the way home. Then I have planned what to drink. It's being held at a craft beer bar which means I will drinking beer. This is potentially a good thing as even though beer has a reputation for more calories, I find I drink it slower than wine and it also fills me up better than wine so I consume fewer calories. With it being 'craft beer' as well I can order it in halves rather than full pints to taste different flavours, so that will slow it down too. I've pre logged my calories and can stay within maintenance - let's do it!

    Yesterday's commitments:

    - Log everything I eat :)
    - Be in the green >:)allowed myself ice cream so went a bit over, still well within maintenance territory
    - 3 bottles water

    - No eating whilst standing  Yes, and I turned down free biscuits
    - Savour every bite :/
    - Talk back to sabotaging thoughts
    - Give myself credit!
    - Stay positive

    - 30 minute lunch break :/Work was a bit ridiculous so only got 15. Had a big break in afternoon to go see consultant though
    - Finish work at 6.15pm
    - Do 1+ thing in French :/Forgot and am lazy
    - Gratitude journal :/As per French
    - Lights off by 11 :/Not too long after though

    Today's commitments:

    - Log everything I eat
    - Stay within maintenance
    - Stick to planned alcohol
    - Order at least one soft drink
    - 3 bottles water

    - No eating whilst standing
    - Savour every bite
    - Talk back to sabotaging thoughts
    - Give myself credit!
    - Stay positive

    - 45+ minute lunch break
    - Print stuff for job application/ potential interview
    - Read about potential company
    - Finish work at 6pm
    - Leave pub by 9.30 or 10 absolute latest

@mytime6630 Wrinkles are natural for most of us. Unless your husband is much younger than you, (or he is carrying excess weight) he must also have them. I believe that some men feel threatened when their wife begins to lose weight.
This is an extract from an article on www.everydayhealth.com
    https://www.everydayhealth.com/weight/dieting-with-a-non-dieting-spouse.aspx
The following is an extract from the article:
    Lose Weight: Communicating Your Goals

While you may be frustrated that your spouse doesn't "get" your diet, your spouse may actually feel threatened by your resolve, says Emily Banes, RD, clinical dietitian at the Houston Northwest Medical Center. "Sometimes if they just realize how important it is, if they realize you're trying to do it to change your health and you're not going to leave them, it helps."

Although it may not seem like your attempt to lose weight should bother your husband or other family members, Banes says loved ones may worry that certain activities you used to do together, such as going out to eat, may now be off-limits.

Banes recommends reassuring your family that you will still do things and go to places you have enjoyed in the past, although perhaps less frequently. To do this successfully, she suggests you come up with your own game plan ahead of time so you know what you will or won't eat when you're out together.

For example, Simon has made a personal commitment to cut back on calorie-laden cocktails and wine when dining out. She also often brings a serving of nuts in her purse in case she needs to stave off the urge to order unhealthy items on the menu or take the edge off hunger while waiting for everyone to order.

No matter what situation you find yourself in, communicating your goals to your spouse is pivotal to your weight loss. Here are some ideas:
    • Convey a positive message. Simon tells her spouse, "I love you, you love me, and this is a form of self-love. I'm taking care of myself, and I know you want me to do that."
    • Explain your process. If your family teases you about your diet strategies, like weighing portions, explain that you are more successful when you take these measures.
    • Talk about what you can eat instead of what you can't. Avoid boring non-dieters with all the details of your plan.
    • Cook separate meals if necessary, but encourage your spouse to try some of the new dishes you are eating, especially if he has a weight problem too. He just might like them!

Good communication and mutual understanding will make it that much easier to stick to your weight-loss plan.

I regard my 'new' wrinkles as a badge of achievement, and one of the trade offs I prepared to make for feeling fabulous. However, drinking more water, and cosseting your skin does seem to lessen the problem over time.

So I have a question for you guys. I have lost 27 pounds since January, but I also was at my highest weight in January. But I want to lose 5 more pounds to be in the “normal “ weight for my height and then also want to lose 10 more pounds. I guess I just want to be in the 170s. Hubby does not want me to lose anymore weight, but I don’t like his reasoning. He does tell me I look nice but he also thinks if I lose more weight wrinkles will show up even more. He says he can tell I am losing weight in my face and worries I will look older. I am already old, I am 68 but that remark made me feel really bad. I don’t want to look even older but a part of me is saying my health is more important and I was hurt. Tonight I am reading on how to not get wrinkles and hoping if I drink more water that might help. Kinda depressed when I worked so hard to lose weight and now hubby tells me I look older. :'(

I'm sorry he said that, it must be upsetting. Men can be very insensitive at times!

I think you should do what will make you happy and your husband should support you with that.

Personally I think you should work on maintaining for a good period of time before you think about those extra ten pounds. Learning how to maintain is so important. I suggest that you work on that and establish habits that keep you steady.

Then, when you are comfortable maintaining, you can decide whether you want to lose those extra ten pounds. You might decide that actually, you're happy at the higher weight, and happy with the lifestyle you have at that weight. If you try to lose and maintain a lower weight, you won't be able to eat as much - forever! (Every ten pounds is 120 calories less per day to maintain). Or, you might decide that you do really want to lose them and are willing to eat less long term. But I'd recommend having a period of maintaining and getting used to what the lifestyle is before you decide.

As for the five pounds to get you into the healthy weight - I think five pounds is a pretty small amount in the scheme of things so it doesn't really matter if you lose them or not. I doubt it will actually make a difference to your health being within some magic number anyway. BMI is not a perfect calculation, it's a guideline. Lots of people have higher BMIs and are healthy, particularly if they do lots of sport. I have read multiple times that rowers and rugby players are technically obese because of all their muscle!

But it may make you feel good to be in the healthy range, and that is important. So if it means a lot to you, do it - and hubby will have to get on board!

I'd probably recommend focusing on maintaining throughout Nov-Dec though. This is a challenging time for you I know. If you can focus on maintaining rather than losing, you can start the new year in a good place, with energy to get rid of those five pounds!

I just want to pick up on something you said - 68 is not old! My mum is 68 and would be appalled at what you said. She refuses to call herself old and is a strong believer that if you consider yourself old, you get old. And she's right! She sees herself as young (well, she might now accept herself as middle aged - she refused to do that when she was 50) and acts that way, doing lots of activities and exercise. And doing all that keeps her from getting old. By contrast, my aunt (who is 69) has decided that she's old, and walks very slowly when she does anything. Because of that she's getting old.

These days, we live a long time and 68 is not old unless you believe it's old (or unless you have health problems that are ageing you). You are healthy, you've lost tons of weight, do plenty of exercise and as far as I know you don't have major health issues?

So, be proud of your age and don't see it as a bad thing. And as for wrinkles? I believe they are otherwise known as wisdom lines. Wear them with pride!
