December 2019 Monthly Running Challenge

Monthly question?
Gifts, what cool stuff are you getting with the sales?
And of course...
Where have you been this year and where are you going in the next?
MORE questions already? Sheesh! A lot to catch up on!
I spent a month unemployed just recently so I deliberately did not look at the sales. It was tough cause people around me kept talking about them LOL. But I made it through okay.
Where am I going? Maybe to a BQ
4 -
As for December goals...
1) Finish well. January starts training for a BQ so I want to be injury-free at that point. Thinking all long slow runs for December, maybe some fast finish, but not sure yet.
2) Finish 2019 miles in 2019:
That is really it. Not sure what 2020 will look like as I have not run under a coach since High School and that was umm, well let's just say "not recently" Should be interesting!10 -

I'm trying for 30 miles again for December. I was only 5 short last month so I think I can do it.
As for Elise's questions, maybe TMI but I need to spill. I went into Walmart at 5:45pm on Thanksgiving with a mass of people trying to buy TVs and toys, and I walked out 10 min later with a pair of pjs, socks, underwear, and toiletries for our 19.5 year old son who we brought home after discovering he was evicted months ago and lived in his car in the parking lot behind the fast food place he works at ever since. Our lives just got turned upside down. His license is suspended due to not paying his speeding fine, his car tags expired and property taxes unpaid. He left right after turning 18 after a very tumultuous high school career and I have very much enjoyed the past 15 months with my husband in PEACE. I was adamant he was not coming back into our home but what do you do? Drive away and leave him in a parking lot in the cold?
So I've got to somehow get through December without letting this knock me off my game. Hopefully we will have him back driving quickly because being his transportation previously played a huge part in the exhaustion and weight gain and loss of fitness I dealt with. This is not my biological son and I have bent over backwards for years to help him but he refused to help himself and the stress and tension in our home was a major energy drain for a long time. I checked out emotionally and just survived instead of living. I'm honestly terrified of getting sucked into his world again.
Sorry for being a downer17 -
@greenolivetree Kids. I’ve had a time with mine. My youngest has been a challenge, drugs, alcohol, mental health, alcohol and did I mention alcohol? You did right taking him in, you can’t let him, although I let my oldest live in a tent in the park... he wasn’t going to make changes or try to be honest, so ya you can draw that hard line if needed. Make a plan and get him back on his feet. He’s young. My pt told me in her culture, kids aren’t adults til 21 so I tried to be patient.
My twins are 24 and just seemingly starting to adult. Hang in there, take care of you, and you know you can vent here. Set some ground rules, hold him accountable. (That’s just support advice. I have no idea how or why mine seemingly started to grow up. Maybe all the saints and gods took pity on me or just wanted to shut me up for one minute). Alex is 52 days sober (please saint Mary, saint Beatrice, saint Michael... all the saints... please don’t let that jinx it) dh is 16 years clean and has his LADC (drug alcohol counseling endorsement) and been a lot of help to me. So, if the boy needs help make it a must. I can’t imagine being the step parent in these situations. It’s hard enough as the parent, guilt, feeling responsible, and can’t fix any of it.12 -

I’ve started December her with a bang - today was the Omaha Half (the second in the five Auckland half marathons series). It was hot (today’s officially the first day of summer) and windy, which helped a lot with the heat. My calves/ankles have been niggly since my last, very hilly event. I had a massage to help ease them on Thursday but on Friday the muscle that runs up my right shin seized up and was very painful with each step. Do, against all advice, I had a second massage - lower legs only - to allow me to actually run.
Fast forward to this morning, the shin pain was gone and my legs were certainly better than previously so I knew I’d be able to run but whether I’d get a respectable time was up for debate. Iintentionally parked a kilometre or two from the start to give myself a excuse to warm up. This was unfortunately thwarted somewhat by an overfull bladder.
I got a good start position (important in this sold out event as it’s gets narrow early on) and headed off at 5 minute pace. Each step was painful but not unbearable and I was surprised I could run at that pace. At the 3km mark we headed down into the sand to run along the beach for 1500m. This was tough but the camber seemed to suit my sorest muscles.
As we headed back onto the tarmac my feet decided to join the pain party and I almost considered pulling out, but hey, 5km is almost there, right?
At 7km things had settled and I got a few good kilometres in before general leg fatigue took the shine off things and I simply settled into a mindset of finishing.
And finish I did. Clocked a 1:53, which was pretty good considering how I was feeling. I then had to drive over an hour home. When I got out of the car I could barely walk. Dropped into an Epsom Salts bath for and hour, which helped, and am currently rolling my calves to help them release.
Bling and treats:
I need to run another 164km this month to reach 2019km for the year.14 -
Wow I can't believe it's December already.
I went back to the January thread to have a look at my goals for the year:
"So my year goals are:
1-run 3 half marathons - Wellington, Auckland and kerikeri.
2-run kerikeri in under 2hrs
3-lose 10kg
4-keep up weight lifting
5-run 600 miles (1000km) by doing 100km a month (gives me a buffer)"
So 1,2,3 and 4 were all a bust bahaha. However with 3 I still weigh the same now that I did then, so I have kept the weight I lost off for 2 years! I'll call that a success lol.
I'm 183km away from no 5... I've run 817km this year. I don't think I'll get to the 1000km, but I'm going to do as well as I can! And frankly the fact I've done over 800, im proud of that.
And the reason I missed out on goal 1 and 2 is because we decided early on in the year to uplift our kids, and move 9hrs south, closer to family. My new job is wonderful, and adjusting to a rotating roster has taken a bit of getting used to.
So ill be spending this month thinking about my next year's goals. I know I'll still want to lose that 10kg lol but honestly if ai get to the end of next year and I'm still the same weight, I'll be really happy.
As to the other monthly question, I like to pick races that are close to home. I don't like to travel too far for a race because of kids. But as they get older I may change this. Also, they have to fit into work schedule.
And today, despite feeling crap, I went for 6.4k run. It felt wonderful. And I actually felt better after.8 -
Nice way to start the month @ContraryMaryMary !
I missed my November running target after two weeks half effort though over my total mileage target. Finished with 106 miles jalked, 69 miles jogged and 147 miles cycled.
December target 90 miles jalked, 91 miles jogged, 130 miles cycled6 -
There is a fair amount of leeway in my December goals. I have left some room for Christmas and another twinge in the foot at 10k this morning reminds me of PlantarF.
1 December. 12.01k, longest ever run. 21/1int.
December goals:
1. Distance ..........110k................12k
2. Runs.................16....................1
3. Long distance..13k..................12k
4. Other ...............10k/1walk.......3

Congratulations to everyone who hit their November goal! I did not...but I'm starting off December on the right foot! 12.4 miles today! It took me 160 minutes. I'm not a speed demon but it was a steady run for me. Good luck to all of us! My goal is to hit 100.9

December Goal: 100 Miles
12/1: 10.05 miles
10.05/100 miles completed
I started off December with a wonderful 10 mile run. It was a little chilly at 38°F feels like 34°F and ending at about 44°F feels like 39°F. But it was sunny and a really pretty day which was nice after a couple of drizzly, gray days. I guess I am getting more acclimated to the cold too. I really enjoyed the run this morning. It is so nice to just get outside and get lost in my thoughts.
Re: gifts. I don't really do much Black Friday Shopping. I did recently get a Noxgear Tracer 360 vest, so I don't really need anything for myself. As far as Christmas gifts go I usually get a year end bonus and that is what I use to buy gifts. I usually get it around the 15th, so I am always a last minute shopper.
Re: Where have I been this year and where will I go in the next? I'm not really sure. I feel like my fitness has improved and I would like to see that continue. I have enjoyed most of my runs and I want to not only continue to run, but to continue to enjoy it. I have never attempted to "run the year", but I did notice today that I have run 1174 miles so far this year which is no where near 2019 miles, but it is 1889 kilometers, so I could run the year in Kilometers. I think I will set my goal for 2020 to be 2020 kilometers and run the year that way.
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17
5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - Cancelled due to weather
10/5/19: Old Rip 5K - PR 27:27, 1st AG
11/9/19: Wags and Whiskers 5K -2nd AG, 4th Woman, 5K PR - 26:36
2020 races:
5/16/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon4 -
@Teresa502 Yes! Message me if you decide to do this one. I would love to meet up!

@Scott6255 health and healing to your body as I know you will make your goal.
Welcome @Christine4695, @greeneggs_and_sam, and @dmfaler and all the other new member as I am a newbie myself so please bear with me as I learn the ropes from the experienced gurus in the community!
Wow what incredible goals @T1DCarnivoreRunner and @AlphaHowls! Thank you for setting the bar!
Monthly questions:
Picking races -I have to stick close to home currently due to work life balance scheduling, grad school and my little one. This Spring I will take on the Shamrock @ VA Beach which is in state but many miles and hours away. I am excited for this marathon as it is the race I was training for BQ yet I had to put on pause due to health. Since my Org provides discounts for races and I have created health and wellness challenges and initiatives for associates I typically will complete these races. For 2020 since joining this community I have set a goal for my first ultra by EOY. I am considering the the Frozen Toe 10k along with the series in Jan and will decide by week 2 in Dec which will challenge me due to the cold conditions yet I think be a great way to kick off the new year and intro back into cross country running.
Gifts - Shoes, gear and races 🥶🤪😊 plus tech🥰.
Where have I been and where am I going? - Fantastic Question and actually came up several times for me today! Thank you! Where have I been- sidelines cheering for others and healing my body while sadly life saving meds have put on more than desired pounds. Nevertheless; transformation and determination is my middle name🦋 so I knew the moment change came it’s on and since that pivotal moment I have elevated and embraced each day! Where to from here-without sounding cliche’— good to great. Knowing greater is in store I can certainly see myself on the road more finishing races strong, creating more initiatives for my org and helping my local community at large while also getting my Fam into running- my first grader completed her first real race in October with me running by her side!!! So cool and as for hubby well he is a weight lifter that strongly supports my running so I hope to get him on a few courses by perhaps trying out Spartan Races.
Oh and as for Dec goals— I am helping a friend create a professional athletes fitness app so I am incorporating more weights with her help. She calls this month my off season 🤣 so I’m not 100% sure of totals but I can safely say 100 miles for Dec. 💆♀️4 -
Are "we" doing RTY teams again? It's almost time to put that together again.
I'm signed up, but could always sync DH to it rather than myself if I'm not running/walking/ biking. He's battling asthma constantly and the cold weather doesn't help also he doesn't have me to complete against. So, I hate to take a spot not contributing. So, I'll wait to join a team.
I'm hopeful and am psychologically ready to get back at it. I'm a bit anxious for December's follow up. Which, probably won't be "run" but I can pretend until then.4 -
Long post ahead...
Postponed last weekend's long run to Sunday, which meant I was short for November, but will have increased total mileage for this month. Ramping up to marathon training (again) so I'm setting goal at 120km. Other goals: run three times a week, and lift twice, at least.
1201-17k total-17k goal-120k
Yesterday's run was a lesson in the dangers of underfueling, I guess. I had two slices of toast and some coffee at 8am and was ready to go, but familial obligations kept me in the house for another two hours. I had two gels and carried water. Well, I'd not gone 5km before I felt hungry and lightheaded, so I took a gel. Needed the second one at the 9km mark and I started getting a bad feeling about the whole thing. Ended up popping into a convenience store at 14km and eating a mini Snicker's bar (it had been left in the sun and was soupy, but by then I didn't care..)
Legs felt great throughout. Carrying water in a handheld was annoying but doable. I suppose I might need to fiddle with amount of carbs in my diet.
Monthly questions:
Re: races. Longer races I choose mostly based on date. Next year I plan to do a marathon in spring and 1-2 HMs, and the same plus a 50km or so ultra in the autumn. However, work means that I'm busy during very specific times of the year, so I need to work my races around that schedule. Traveling within the country is relatively cheap and easy between most major cities, so half marathons and upward I look up if there are any races for my chosen weekends and choose one that is well-organized, easy to book transportation for, and in a city with good food .
For shorter races, I just run whatever local comes up.
Re: cool stuff. Mizuno was having a big sales last week so I bought myself another pair, different color, of my current favorite shoes. I'd forgotten that the last pair had cut into my right heel until I tamed it with a bunch of shorter runs and a lot of rough handling - this one does the same.
0km vs 447km
Re: where I've been and where I'm going.
This year, I finally got my act together around June and had some solid months of training, and it shows. I'm running quite a bit faster and easier than the beginning of the year. I ran a decent half in May and a slightly better than decent 10km in November. For next year, my main goals will be a full in the spring and hopefully a 50km trail later in the year. Which means lots of training during the summer months, again. Gah.
Oh and I'd like to try out rock climbing.
@Teresa502 @ContraryMaryMary Great job!
@Scott6255 @emmamcgarity @Elise4270 Hoping for smooth progress in your recoveries!
This morning I read an article about the mental aspect of rebounding from injury. Although I never think of myself as an "athlete", I think the approach is very interesting and worthy of a read --> link here.

Hey all.
2 days into December and I've done 12.8km so far! Lol. I am doing a 60km challenge called the 12 days of Christmas for a nz run virtual run charity. The funds they raise goes to running on the spectrum, a charity for autism. I do as many of their events as I can. They have 2 main events a year, and they try do monthly challenges as well.
This challenge is to pick a total number of ks, and run them in the first 12 days of December. They have spot prizes and all that but its just fun to be in a challenge.
And my training plan to run 10k in 55 mins is going well. Its the Garmin training plan one, thought I'd give it a go. I'm really enjoying it actually and like how it's set up on my watch. Works well8 -
It is good to have some newbies on board having only joined a few weeks ago - welcome to everyone.
Good luck with your challenge @Avidkeo
Started December with a shorter run than expected, a tight calf muscle, still tight today - I'll keep stretching at my desk to see if I can free it up.
