Christmas --
I've decorated.
I've made most of the plans for the Christmas week.
I'm not sending cards and I'm barely giving gifts.
Then someone at work said that Christmas is 2 weeks today! Wow ... that sneaks up on a person! I think I've got a free lunch hour tomorrow, so I'll see about picking up the Secret Santa gift, some chocolates for my work colleagues, and a few last minute bits and pieces.
But I've got so much work, homework, paperwork etc. leading up to Christmas I can't really think about it until my break starts.
Plus, on Friday morning, I'm having a shingles vax, my second measles vax, and a punch biopsy of a mole.
So I'm not really in the Christmas mood yet.
Maybe I'll put on some Christmas music.

Morning, afternoon and evening, all...
Back home safe from my work Christmas party yesterday. Even in a group of 50 to 60 people (not my favorite thing) it was lovely fun. This time last year, I was at the same party and knew no one at all... and this year I knew all but the newest employees. Lots of hugs--hope my immune system is strong enough to throw off all the germs. Four different fun games (two were the Kahoots app, if you've ever heard of it - great fun for groups, and everyone could play on their smartphones).
Lots of door prizes, a few high-dollar prizes that you could submit entries for - you get entries throughout the year for things like co-worker credits, when someone sends a credit to HR for something you've done to help them that goes far beyond your job title, and you get more entries when you donate to the organization, or give a higher donation this year than last year. Tons of laughter, moved really fast, never got slowed down. Just exhausting - three hour drive there, four hours of party, three hours back.
Friday night at 6:30 is Corey's work Christmas party. There won't be any hugs - lots of manly men doing manly work so lots of handshakes. It's a landscaping company, and he's the one who fixes all the equipment, dozens of massive mowers, weed trimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, spray trucks, etc., and this time of year, all the trucks and trailers are in, so he can get all the regular maintenance on them done. He fixes the heavy equipment, too, for irrigation jobs, which they do all winter long. He always laughs when he tells people his job title - Asset Reliability Manager. They'll also have food, yes, but most buffet servings here are Mexican foods (as was my work Christmas party), so I can just grab fajita fillings of grilled chicken and some cheese and/or beans, and I'm a happy camper.
I'm so looking forward to our own quiet Christmas together. Just a time spent with each other, most likely both reading books on our Kindles on the couch, with the fireplace lit up. Don't wish to decorate, happy to look at other folks as we drive by. Michele, folks like you and Vince make the rest of us very happy as we ooh and aah over your hard work while we sit in our car in our laziness and drive by!
Am also looking forward to two weeks of paid days off! Am finally going to work on my favorite niece's quilt - I'm calling it "Deep in the Heart" as it's been constructed in my mind for more than a year - a massive star shape, made of materials showing the night sky and stars, then surrounded by iconic Texas fabric designs, including saddle leather iconography, bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and so on. I think it will be lovely. The other part of my design brain is working on my son's, which he wants just a black one, but I've found the Hannon family crest online, so I'm going to either recreate it or buy a flag with it on and incorporate it in a quilt somehow. That may be another time, though.
Sorry, didn't mean to write a book
Love y'all,

My loving thoughts are with those of you who are finding this time of year difficult. I think it brings up so many subconscious/unconscious issues for all of us. Long buried family histories and wounds are brought to the surface.
One thing is certain - everything changes, all the time. What worked for us once upon a time does not work for our present circumstances.
Sending love and hugs to everyone.
My brother has at last said he can come over before Christmas. He wants to come next Sunday, which is the day we are having a pub lunch away with DH's elder daughter. I have said, come at 5pm and they will stay the night. Housework and linen washing for me, but I love my brother and his wife. I think it might be a takeaway dinner!
I am expecting a mega delivery from Amazon today. I've scheduled all my recent orders for today. I buy nearly everything from Amazon, even small things.

Michele when I made Minnesota my home. I think I only went back for Christmas once. Even then flying was a pain and it was an eleven hour drive in good weather. I decided I would rather visit when it was less stressful. My mother would either get sick or have a melt down because of the stress of the Holidays. It is also very stressful to travel with small children no matter what time of year. I am for the solution that is the least stressful for all.
Neither of our boys will be with us on Christmas Day. I am fine with this because it gives us another day to celebrate. For me the important thing is just to be with them and celebrate my time with them whatever day it is.
Decorating is fun for me because it makes me think about all the people who had touched my life. I would say well over have of my decorations inside are from family and friends or if I bought them they reminded me of someone or it made me smile.
I just finished my Christmas letter. I like to make a letter put together with comics. I sometimes cut out pieces to make my statement. I make sure I limit myself to one page. I started doing this as a way make a Christmas Letter fun and not a chore to do. This weekend my goal is to get my cards done with the included Christmas Letter.
For cookies I make two pans of cherry bars and a batch of chocolate chip cookies (my version). I have neighbors who ask if I do not bring them their cherry bars for the season. I have four neighbors who like them so only have a few left for us.
My mom would make 10 different kinds and they lasted til they were dry and hard. I think this was part of her stress. She had a tough time giving herself permission to make less.
There is an adage for fashion. You are all dressed and ready to go with all your accessories. Now take one accessory off so you will look more put together. Perhaps preparing for the Holidays could use this advice. Take one thing off your plate and use that time to pamper yourself because you are worth it.

Machka & SusieQ - I cook but not on holidays anymore! Thanksgiving at my Aunts we get McDonald’s on the way home or eat something easy . Christmas is restaurant foods. (LitterBox cake does sound fun! Some schools tho are so picky tho had a teacher happy I was nice enough to make-healthy cupcakes 🧁 but when asking school heads they said NO due to possible food allergies then were picky about the fact the cupcake paper said Christmas not holidays the teacher had to buy sugary unhealthy cupcakes 🧁 with label intact with ingredients showing).
I can picture my Daughter becoming Denise I taught her to cook but she feels being a working gal who hates cooking that she rather eat out or get tvdinners to canned soups! Can’t picture my Daughter cooking a Dinner 🥘 for herself or others. She finally getting into cleaning at least. Got an Uncle who’s to proud to accept others food even potluck for family events (definitely explains why Pride is looked down upon even by God). We stopped using his home as much but if we do expect bowls of cereal 🥣, hot dogs 🌭,y soda💥.

Hello Ladies! I am sorry for being so far behind ... couple things caught my attention
Heather ... why are you writing in past tense regarding writing a good song? As far as I know, there's no time limit to creativity ...
Rori ... I think you are incredibly strong and being proactive in your husband's care. Having recently encouraged my mentally astute but physically disabled son to change his living arrangements from independent living to a "group home," I have some insight into what you might be experiencing. I have friends who do not understand why I just don't take care of my son at home. There are others who recognize the pragmatism and love my decision to get him used to living without me entails. You are doing all the right things.
Terri ... your poetry really resonates with me and I love the images your words bring to mind.
Machka ... my reaction to pineapple isn't an "allergy" per se, but as much as I love it, it does not love me ...
Janetr ... prayers for your daughter...
Christmas expectations ... still no progress on the shopping front ... no one is giving me any ideas ... no one is going to get any gifts ... just sayin'
So ... I had 6 month blood labs and a physical this week. I follow Dr. Bert Herring's Fast-5/AC: The Power of Appetite Correction ... which is a fasting program (not severe calorie restriction) that encourages a "fasting" period of 19 hours and a window of eating that is 5 hours. Lots of science behind this but that's not the point today. After living this way for almost a full year, I have released 25 pounds and my labs across the board have improved with my glucose levels showing the most improvement. My doctor was thrilled today. I am thrilled as the last couple of months have been slow going with the weight loss. Improved health is just as important as weight loss so I plan to continue this lifestyle. It suits me.

Pineapple - I had issues with fresh pineapple in the past. Someone in Hawaii said to rinse it after you peel it and it won't bother me...it worked. I can eat it without the tingling now. Thankfully. I love it.
We are off to Mexico for a diving vacation this month. Travel is our Christmas gift to each other. It is much better than more stuff. We try to go somewhere every year for the holidays. We rarely buy each other gifts, but we take each other on trips. The gift is the other person does the planning!
Hugs to all who need them. December is tough for many. Thinking of you.

Rori: It seems that you have a good plan for DH's care at home for the present time and strategies for the future. Yay!
Luci in WNC: I agree with you about the value of the internet for staying in touch with loved ones who are far away. My kids are literally thousands of miles from here. :ohwell:
Rebecca: Laughing with you—"When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but 10 extra pounds on hips thighs & rear.“ I am right with you—but this will not happen because we can make healthy choices and be diligent with portion control. (PS: Leave the batteries in your scale, but remember that you don’t have to step on it unless you want to.)
Lisa: “Asset Reliability Manager”—Perfect! Corey seems to have found a good work situation.
Heather UK: Amazon is amazing. We shop for groceries and hardware locally, but the Amazon delivery truck is a frequent visitor in our neighborhood for other items. :flowerforyou:
Margaret: Like you, neither of our adult children & their families will be with us for the holidays this year. I also enjoy decorating, and we are getting ready to bring in our tree. It is in the garage acclimatizing to inside temps. Our tree is named for her species. Alberta (Spruce) is 4’1.5” tall from bottom of pot to tip of tree. We’ve had this tree in our house each Christmas for ten or eleven years. It will sit on a glass topped carved wooden chest in our living room during the holidays. Many garden centers carry potted trees. There are some small Alberta Spruce trees for sale outside at Walmart this very week. One live tree is enough for us. I have many small artificial trees that are still in the attic waiting for me to get busy with decorating.
I had a city meeting last night, and tonight I have a meeting with my equestrian friends. I’d like to invite one or two of the equestrian friends to see the Christmas Ships parade with us this coming weekend, but DH is not feeling social. He is willing to invite our niece. It is getting a bit late, but I’ll encourage him to go ahead with the invitation. Our son hoped we’d also invite a few of his friends, but DH is not feeling that well.

Kim – the reason we can’t fly to Denise is because Vince does A LOT of decorating for the holidays. We can’t leave with the computer controllers outside. What we’d have to do (in one week or even less) is bring in all the extension cords, the inflatables, the blowmolds, the controllers, the blocks, take down the arches, the lights on the arches, put them away so that we can at least get one car in a garage (in the meantime, we need to dry out the inflatables). I hope I’ve covered everything. The reason she says that she’s having the anxiety is because “it’s such a long trip” and she wouldn’t be able to hold PJ since he’d have to be in the carseat. We’ve tried explaining to her that air travel with a baby is very difficult. I flew to FL when Jess was an infant and I swore that I would never do it again. Now I was willing to make a two DAY trip with 3 little children, and this was pre-9/11, before airlines jammed everyone into a plane (there are no extra seats) and gave you less room. To drive up to her (at least 9 hours) then we’d have to turn around and drive another 9 hours back. Plus, how does she get her car here? Are you saying that we drive another 9 hours to take her back and then another 9 to get home? I don’t know that she’d be any less anxious having us drive or Pete. I really do think she just wants to take the easy way out and that’s not to come. Going to Iowa put us back so we’re scurrying to get the decorating done. Mother nature has not exactly cooperated, but at least it isn’t snowing.
Michele in NC
18 hours in the car in a short amount of time with a baby is a very long time. I don't know if she's nursing or not, but even if she isn't, it won't take them 9 hours -- it will be longer. I do understand your position, but I definitely see her arguments, too. Especially if her husband doesn't have a lot of time to take off because he took those weeks off after his son was born. Even if he has the time, his employer might not be too keen about having him gone again for days.
I am sorry that you are having so much family conflict about what to do about the holidays.

Gray drizzly day today. Got my hair cut this morning. Going to put up the tree this evening with DD. I am teaching water exercise tomorrow at the YM. Need to get all the sugary things out of my house. Still working on Christmas gifts although a lot of them are done.
Nessa was 2 years old yesterday. She got a bath and hair cut and new Christmas bandana which she is already shredding.
Rebecca - love that sign

Michele go to Denise’s house for Christmas. You never know how long you have here. I think I would rather see my grandchild then light up the neighborhood.6

Sue - OMGosh - Nessa is a doll!!
On Christmas travel - My hubs and I made an agreement with my parents that we would come home for Christmas until we had kids, then they would come to us (we moved about 8.5 hours away). Joke was on us, we didn't have kids so we went home every year. Sometimes it was up on Christmas Eve and back home on Christmas night to be at work on the 26th, but we went home. Thank God my parents played nice and we had Christmas at my Mom's with her and my step-dad and my Father and brother and various others. Dad would come up on Christmas Eve and stay all night and go home Christmas afternoon (he and my Mom lived a couple of hours apart). We would split our time between her house and his, but we didn't have to split the actual holiday. We were very fortunate, I know. Before anyone asks, we had Thanksgiving with the hubs family, they didn't really "do" Christmas.

Good afternoon to all. I've got the decorations all up. I still need to finish cleaning out the craft room, but I'm down to all of the "tricky" items. You know, the ones that you don't know if you should keep or discard and if you keep it you don't know where to put it. Oh, my.... life can be so complicated!3

Gift cards!
They're brilliant! Amazon if you're really not sure what to get, or something a bit more specific if you've got a general idea.
One year, we got my sister & brother in law gift certificate for a hotel not too far from where they lived ... it was enough for a night and dinner, IIRC. We knew they wanted a little get-away but because they have pets, they didn't want to go too far.
One year, I got my nieces and nephew gift certificates for an art studio where they could go for a 1-afternoon class to make art ... their choice of painting, pottery, or whatever.
I've sent gift certificates for art shops, bookstores, technology shops, a shopping centre ...

Fresh pineapple does feel a bit soapy so maybe I should try rinsing it.
I'm with you ... travel is our Christmas gift to each other. My husband and I are adults over 50 now and have lots of stuff ... instead, we enjoy spending time together without pressures of work, uni, etc., doing something fun! For me, that's much better than getting another ornament or piece of clothing or whatever.margaretturk wrote: »There is an adage for fashion. This is worth repeating!!
The main reason I like Christmas and look forward to it is because it is time off for me ... it's time for me to relax and let go of the stress of the rest of the year.

Hope everyone is having a great day. I also got my hair cut but my puppy doesn’t go until Tuesday. Until we got Riley, I didn’t realize how much you love your pets. He lights up our life, keeps us active and brings us so much joy. No one has ever been so glad to see me.
So far the 10 day forecast looks good for our trip to CO. Not sure I trust those early forecasts.
Everyone stay warm and safe.

Went to the water class today. The plan for tomorrow is to do an Advanced Strength DVD
Karen – I haven’t posted photos of our decorations yet mainly since they aren’t done yet. We have the “fence” around the house with the lights on it and so far have lights on the arches for about ¾ of it. We’ll probably finish that part today. After they are on, it’ll go pretty fast. Rolling out the extension cords (I think Vince put out some of them just to be sure that the channels work), putting out the blowmolds and inflatables along with other decorations. Most of the video stuff is done since we had videos in the windows from Halloween so that screens are up and the projector is up. We usually don’t put the speakers outside for Christmas but broadcast it on the FM radio (there are speakers for Halloween).
SuziQ – don’t worry, you are in no way being critical. Denise IS very selfish. The bad thing (that I feel) is that Maria basically will give her and Pete what they want and tell them that they’re OK (being selfish). Yes, I would love to have PJ here, to be able to sit in my father’s rocking chair and feed him a bottle. To be able to see him wrapped in the quilt that I made (it took years for me to do it). I don’t think we’re going to tell her that not coming here is OK. At least not right now. Mainly because if we say it’s OK now, I fear it’ll be taken that every year it’s OK. I believe and I have no proof of this, that it is Maria who is telling them “they can come here, it’s easier for them since they’re retired”. I honestly don’t think Pete would think of something like that on his own. This year for Christmas Eve I’m planning that Jess, Colby, Vince, myself, will be here and I’ve invited friends of mine here since they aren’t going to Miami to see her grandson and another friend who has family problems. Then, when Denise is here I’ve invited Jess’ friend, her hubby, their son, her MIL, Jess, possibly Colby, Vince, myself, a friend of mine who just moved to NC, Denise, Pete, PJ, Maria said she was coming but I’m willing to bet she doesn’t, the lady across the street, her daughter and her mother. Her husband is deployed to Afghanistan and won’t be home until March. Jess has said that she wants to invite our family vet and his wife. A few years ago Denise asked us that we don’t invite Jess’ bf. To me, the holiday is about sharing, not just “only blood family”. They saw the decorations last year, but I bet Pete has no idea how much goes into making them. Like he probably doesn’t realize that to make the lights on the “fence” look like they’re chasing, you need a separate channel on the controller (so that means different extension cords). Same with the lights on the arches. I am willing to have our Christmas another day when it works into their schedule
After exercise went to pick up a lap quilt that I made, I was having someone else quilt it for me because that is one thing I absolutely HATE to do. Then went to the Salvation Army then WalMart then home and put out more decorations. Got the arches finished and most of the “fence”. Tomorrow Vince said he’s thinking of putting out the blowmolds and inflatables after he finishes the fence. Got the blocks down for all the connections (and there are LOTS of them)
Margaret – 10 different kinds of cookies???? I’m planning to make only two. The M&M ones that Vince’ll eat the leftovers and the ginger ones that I can give the leftovers away. For Christmas eve I’ll probably make an apple pie but for our Christmas (Jan 5) I’ll ask Amanda to bring one if she asks if she can bring anything. I’ll also make this chocolate thing that Vince’ll eat. Got my desserts planned out
Found out the Y is closed (at least the pool is) for maintenance next week. Personally, this time of year – the holidays – is when people NEED to exercise, why don’t they shut down in July when lots of people are away???? Wisdom!
Mary – the controllers are already out, lots of lights are out, the fence is up and lit. Most of the infrastructure is already done. To take all this in would take WEEKS. It’s taken weeks to put it up
