I'm a lone runner. It's just how things work around here. I join in park run every Saturday I can, and I do enjoy that but I'm on my own doing it, so alone in a crowd I guess? I prefer to go at my own pace, to just not worry about anyone or anything. Zone out and just listen to my podcasts.
Like this morning. 630am, it's silent, few others around (well there are a few atm lol). The air is still, it's just so calm.
So this morning was 7.6km. So wonderful.

@quilteryoyo The fact that you live alone, I think, makes you a very strong and independent woman. Getting out to play tennis, to run, to drive to visit grandchildren/nieces is a great thing! I know many much younger who have nil ambition to do anything. I've often run and wished that someone was running with me. My husband outright refuses to run at all but I outright refuse to lift weights; I could not think of a more boring exercise to do. I know your husband would be, is, proud of you as is your parents and all of your loved ones.4

Thanks @CupcakeCrusoe ! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I do find that if I don't run for a few days I get antsy to get out there, but still not really looking forward to it, if that makes any sense whatsoever. @LoveyChar I can see how you would look forward to the alone time on the weekends and or even getting out with your baby. Maybe I just hit on my issue, or at least part of it. I always run alone, unless it is a race and then, I'm still basically running alone. I live alone, so I have lots and lots of alone time. Maybe I need to be more social with my running and I would look forward to it. Humm. I'll have to ponder that one.

How many pairs of running socks do you have? I currently have 5, was 6 but one sock has gone missing (eaten by the washing machine I assume) and I don't feel that's enough. Granted I'm running every day but I have a need to get more.
I now have two visors, about 5 different running tops of various types (1 crop, 3 tanks and 1 long sleeve - I also own a pair of sleeves), 2 knee length leggings and 2 full length, about 5 wrist sweat bands and 4 running bras. I also have dedicated underwear (really old ratty ones since I use vasoline not bodyglide) and I am now rotating 2 pairs of shoes (new pair next week!).
So much gear! And I am always on the lookout for bargains...
So how much is too much? And should I get more socks? Haha

A coworker, who formally ran a lot but has since been injured, let me borrow a book of stretches to include foot stretches. He will likely have foot surgery soon, with a major contributing factor that he didn’t take the best care of his feet. Does anyone else do specific foot stretches? I have massaged mine and rolled on a ball before but honestly never thought any more in depth than that.
I have never done foot stretches; the saddest thing is that I have never done any stretches before a run but...I need to. I don't know if you're following a training plan but after I ran my 18 last week, I walked 3 the next day. My training plan called for me to run 5 the next day...I like what you did with the variety of strength/cardio. Anyway, back to the stretches, I'm going to look some foot stretches up. It will probably at least help get the blood flowing.
Stretxhing before a run is no longer recommended. It's suggested you do dynamic warm ups, so leg swings, jogging on the spot, boxers shuffle, that sort of thing. You don't want to stretch a cold muscle as it can lead to injury.
I personally just do some leg swings, and some rocking squats if I'm feeling tight in the calves.3 -

In the meantime, I signed up for a 2nd marathon in Feb. I'm strongly thinking about a 3rd in Feb. and adding 1 at the beginning of Apr. If I do all of those, I level up to Platinum (2nd from highest level) in the Marathon Maniacs. Someday I am going to admit I have a problem, but that day hasn't yet arrived.
Loving this for you!!!! Wowza, you got a crazy addiction!0 -
@quilteryoyo I go through phases. Right now I’m really looking forward to each run. I think my phases coincide with the weather, how much sleep I’ve been getting, and what races I have coming up. Being injured also made me really appreciate that I get to get out there and enjoy running. Also - grandniece is a little doll!
Today I did somewhat over 5 miles on trails in my Alta Timps. This is the first run I’ve done in a zero drop shoe since my Achilles injury and I was nervous because these shoes are definitely very different from my usual 12mm drop. So far no twinge from the Achilles! I love my timps on trails with a lot of jumping up and down stepped roots, because they put me on my toes and don’t have big lugs to catch when I get tired and start dragging my feet. I call them my billygoat ballerina shoes!
The flooding at the bridge over the creek is back, but today the bridge is visible, just about a foot under the surface of the water. Since it was warm we just shrugged and ran on through. Husband says, “Do not slip and go off the bridge!” Water was about knee high at the deepest, which is deeper than I’ve ever run through before! It’s funny, trails were pretty gluey leading up to the bridge which is at the midway point of the trail loop and I was prancing around in the leaves on the edges of the trails trying to keep my feet mostly dry. Oh well! The nice thing about being completely soaked is that after that, you don’t have to worry about it anymore, just plow right on through the deepest mud. It made for a much more relaxed run after that.
During our cool down walk on the boardwalk which loops around and crosses the same creek, just at dusk we heard something splashing around. Sounded like a dog, but lo and behold it was a big old doe, swimming, using the creek to cross under the boardwalk! We also saw what I at first mistook for a broken off branch until my husband pointed out it was an owl. We usually hear barred owls near there but they don’t have “ears” so I’m thinking Great Horned owl. It was funny watching us, it never moved visibly, but whenever we moved, both “ears” stayed in a forward orientation towards us! Like one of those paintings with the eyes that seem to follow you.

Right now I've got four pairs of active running shoes, a pair of trail shoes that I rarely wear, and a pair that's rotating out but can still be used for a short run in a pinch. Socks... I think I've got 5 pairs. But in my household socks are constantly getting lost under furniture (3 cats will do that) so I'm often wearing the same socks for a month because I can't find any of the others.
In theory I could live with two pairs. But YMMV.2 -
For the love of all things cheese please get this back ache to go away. I knew something wasn't quite right before my run yesterday though once I started we were all good until 7 miles in and that was all I was getting. Can dehydration cause this? I drank 4 pints of water this morning and feel slightly better, still painful though better.

Have you tried some yoga? I know when my back starts to ache, I do a 30 min back yoga exercise. There are a few really simple ones online. Sarah Beth is usually my go to. I know, it's yoga. If you haven't done it, it can be a bit intimidating. But I swear it's the only thing that works to keep my back lose. Way better than pain relief to get to sleep at night. And back pain is usually muscular2 -

I don’t stretch before running. As @Avidkeo mentions above, it is not recommended to do so because of injury. I just walk or jog in place a bit beforehand to warm up. Stretches would come after. I have always done some heel raises and downward dogs, but these new stretches work individual toes and focus on specific foot muscles. My coworker swears by them, so I am incorporating some with my other stretching, so we’ll see.
Yes, I am following a plan...a modification of the plan from my last marathon. I am trying to incorporate different cross training types and more strength training this time around, but my runs have pretty much stayed the same.

I have 5-6 pairs of socks, but I seriously need to buy some new ones and chunk some older ones.
I have too many shirts/tanks, but I did go through my running drawer and get rid of a few lately.
I think @PastorVincent has been sick this week.

Good Morning y'all, I am new in here and don't really know how this goes, but I am a runner and from reading the posts, this is definitely a runner's place. It is all positive and supportive, my kinda place! My wife and I are in perpetual training for half marathons and love running together. This Sunday is the Jekyll Island Half in Jekyll Island, Georgia, USA.

I would say I'm very similar - I don't think I ever "look forward to" running, or very infrequently. Sometimes if it's a gorgeous day or I travel somewhere new I look forward to being out there and experiencing nature - but yeah, not really "I get to run!" I live alone as well and have tons of alone time, and while most of my daily runs are alone just to get them done, honestly I would probably have quit a long time ago if I didn't have a run group. I *do* look forward to meeting up with people. I have a main group through my gym and meet up for that for speedwork and long runs, and a sub-group of women that I meet up with during those and sometimes at other times. Those relationships are what keep me going and looking forward to getting out there. Everyone is different about what they prefer but I for sure prefer the social type of running most of the time. I'd say definitely give it a try if you can - you may love it. Or if you don't, then you have a greater appreciation of running alone

Just updating on the last couple of days. I went to speedwork on Monday night and the workout was hills. My back (SI joint) was bothering me after Sunday's race so I ended up just doing a base run instead of running hard - but still did a few loops of the hill. Yesterday was a treadmill run before my mace training class. Back feels a bit better but I'm having to do stretches several times a day to try to realign the SI joint. It seems to be a recurring problem for me since I hurt it last year about this time but fortunately, the stretching seems to really help.
That's a 28-day running streak for me. I'm not sure how I feel about continuing that. I'll re-evaluate after 30 days if I make it (schedule is crazy).7 -
Totally slept in and didn't do my long run. It's winter break and I didn't have to get kids to school etc, and the bed was just too comfortable. I'll try again tomorrow. Ran 9k at a moderately easy pace.
January goal 100 miles (stretch goal 200 km)
Added a few more Upcoming Races:
Feb. 1 - CityTrail 5k (#5 of 6)
Feb. 8 - Lublin night 10k
Mar. 1 - Bieg Tropem Wilczym 5889m race (in memory of underground soldiers 1944-1963)
Mar. 7 - CityTrail 5k (#6 of 6)

I heard the 12 days of Christmas in your list- a song in the making!
IMO you are short on shoes and socks. Unless you find a new bargain soon. In which case - maybe look for a running skirt? I love those! And some new leggings- saw one the other day with five pockets, and can oreser them in different inseam lengths... and even choose if the top zippered pocket goes in front or back!..
So... ya... never enough running gear 😆5 -
@LoveyChar Awww. Thank you for those kind words.
Thanks to all those who responded to my question. It helps to know that I'm not the only one who feels the way I do. Unfortunately, the nearest running club is an hour's drive from me. One of the reasons I chose running is that it can be done close to home and doesn't have to take up a ton of time. I live in a rural area, so the closest town is 20 minutes away. Not horrible, but they don't have any running groups. I've thought about starting one, but my plate is already overflowing and I really can't add another thing without everything toppling to the ground. I may just bite the bullet and join the one that is an hour away, just to see if I like it and get to run some different routes. I do like running at my own pace though and wonder how it will be if no one else is using the Jeff Galloway method.
@T1DCarnivoreRunner Wow! You are a beast for sure!
Welcome @mikeschratz ! Good luck on your HM this weekend!

Cloudy, low 30s F, and no wind. Banana fuel worked well today: felt good. Also got to see a buck chasing a doe.
I've got lots of running socks -- summer socks; fall socks; winter socks; spring socks; compression socks. But I do have a sock problem. If I leave my toenails too long, the big toenail cuts holes in the socks. But if I trim the toenails too short, I get blisters on the tips of my toes. Talk about First World problems.
Welcome, @mikeschratz !!

@Avidkeo
I think I've got about ten pairs of shorter socks and four pairs of long extra warm ones for winter running. I could have fewer, but I like being able to comfortably go at least a week without having to do laundry to go for a run.3
