Janet OKC: I’m happy things are going well for your daughter. I’m also happy that things are going okay for you & the puppies are relatively well behaved.
Dr Katie: I’ll look into the idea of a non-alcoholic red wine. Thanks for the good suggestion.
Karen in VA: I am sorry for the loss of your friend, Lynette, and picture her with the Angels.
Karen in VA: I am a big fan of blueberries and grow my own. They freeze very well and I have some of them for breakfast almost every day. I’m also well acquainted with dark chocolate. Thanks for your excellent suggestions.
Janetr: Thank you for the positive story about your MIL. :flowerforyou:
Had a message from my daughter. She is unhappy with her weight. I suggested that she look at MyFitnessPal. I have had great luck with it, especially because of this group. DD is not even close to 50 and I hope there are groups for women her age.

The Liverpool Care Pathway, which my mother had, has since been banned by law. It was a blessing for all concerned. Restless and struggling is not necessary. Now your friend is at peace. Peace. Lots and lots of love to you.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx
I looked up the history of the LCP after reading your post, and am just dumbfounded how it was misused! I looked up the .pdf of the actual protocol after reading some of the eyebrow-raising stories - it was a good idea gone awry. Chilling. I hope your mother was actually terminal when she was put on that pathway.
I find my spirits lifting in the last few hours. I am so very relieved that Lynette is free. I hope my other friends and her family feel the same way. I found out her sisters are already working on a memory board for her services, which will be Saturday. My little community will swing into action and give her a fitting send off. There will be so many people wanting to be a part - her Lutheran Church home, her friends, her family, her former teacher colleagues, her former students, friends of her children & grandchildren. Really heartening given that she has been out of the limelight for 15 years.

Thanks for all the hugs and supportive words.

Janet, OKC glad your daughter seems to be doing so well. Have to agree with a previous post, a good job will certainly be of help for her.
Karen, VA, so sorry to hear of your dear friend passing, but happy that you have good memories and that she is no longer uncomfortable.
Rori, my sincerest wish that your GP can help with hubby's sundowners. Sounds absolutely awful for everyone concerned.
Allie, sorry to hear that Mary just had to contact you about her new job while you're still on holiday. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!
So, have once again committed to "the plan". Have tracked today and even though dinner will be pizza ( work thing) I actually have enough calories remaining so all should be good. Ugh! On my phone, this is harder than it needs to be so that's it for me for now!
Hugs to those who need them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!

I am just new to this site. My year has been full of changes and upsets . . .. and 30 pounds from stress eating. Hoping for brighter days!9

Karen: (((Hugs))) It's hard to lose a friend. Cherish your memories of the good times.
Meditation: I started meditating in my late 20s when I started practicing yoga. I subscribe to a variety of meditation channels, and end each day with a deep breathing meditation which clears my mind of the daily clutter which would otherwise trouble my sleep. I've been doing it for so long that it's second nature. I do another breathing meditation each morning when I wake up to revitalise my energy for day ahead. Occasionally I do a chakra clearing meditation or a healing meditation if I have some health matter troubling me. I have also used meditation several times instead of having anesthetics when having minor surgery.
Had my blood pressure checked today. The first attempt was a rather elevated, then I did my breathing exercises, and it came right down to where it should be again.
It's time for my evening meditation. Back in the morning.

Katla-I don't drink alcohol and while there is some research that indicates red wine may have a beneficial effect, I personally would ignore my doctor on that.
JanetrOKC - hope things continue going well with your daughter situation.
Karen in Virginia-so sorry for the loss of your friend.
Terri-don't know that I would ever be brave enough to try mediation instead of anesthesia!
Heather UK-had a couple of friends who have had prostrate cancer and they were treated with great success. Try not to get too concerned-you don't know what you may or may not be dealing with.
Good to be back home. Meeting today was actually very good (I don't say that often!). Tired from poor sleep last night. Made myself go to gym--felt much better after I got there and started my routine. While eating was different for past two days, still kept up with steps, etc.
Too tired to think of anything else. We may get a bit of snow here tomorrow, but definitely going to be colder.
Take care all,

Karen big hugs my dear friend. It's so hard to lose a loved one.
Thank you for your kind words regarding my daughter. She is working and trying so hard and I know it is very hard for her too. She has not lived with me since she was 21 and she will turn 46 in July.

KetoneKaren wrote: »Katla If your doctor recommended red wine, it may be because it is a source of
reservatrol, which protects plants from diseases & stress damage. It's less clear if it protects humans, but there are tons of dietary sources: peanuts, pistachios, grapes, red & white wine, blueberries, cranberries, cocoa, and dark chocolate.
Karen in Virginia
Absolutely right!
I'm actually surprised that a doctor would recommend drinking alcohol. There are more negatives than positives associated with drinking alcohol.
Get the resveratrol from another dietary source.
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/265635
And remember ...
"However, any health benefits only apply to moderate drinking. The United States (U.S.) Dietary Guidelines 2015 to 2020 define moderate drinking as: “Up to one drink per day for women, and up to two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.”"
Also from that article ... but do read the whole article ...
Fast facts on the possible benefits of red wine:
- Red wine is high in resveratrol, and it may offer various health benefits.
- Resveratrol may boost heart health, protect against some kinds of cancer, and prevent some types of vision loss.
- Grapes and berries are a better source of resveratrol than red wine, so eating these is likely to be more healthful than drinking wine.
- However, if you are going to drink, red wine appears to be more healthful than some kinds of alcoholic beverage.
- Women should not drink more than one glass a day, and men, two glasses.

Well we got to Lima in one piece lol..long layover but the sky lounge had a quiet room where you could lie down, and I did and was out like a light. Trudy scared me when she woke me up..
But here we are waiting for our plane to arrive ..4 -
Semester 1 has begun.
The plan was that I would catch my usual bus, arrive at work moments after 9 am, then leave at 10:20, catch the bus to the university, attend the lecture, and walk back to work. I'd get stuff done at work, take care of the uni stuff and progress with work stuff in the afternoon.
The reality is that I waited for my usual bus which arrived about 20 minutes late and took so long getting into town it was about 10 am when it finally arrived. I had 20 minutes to down some coffee and start my computer before dashing off. Fortunately the rest has gone according to plan.
It rains here a little bit and everything grinds to a halt.
Anyway, it was the first lecture today. Not impressed that there is group work but I've only got 3 more courses till I'm done.

Thanks for the input on alcohol. I’ve done my experiment and reached the conclusion that I feel better without drinking alcohol, including wine. I like putting some red wine into beef stew. It adds a good flavor to the stew and the alcohol evaporates in the cooking process.

Welcome Dawn in Roselle IL
Janetr rejoicing at your Mom’s heart and your daughter’s good decision. Keeping you and your daughter (and the dogs, old and pups) in prayer.
Katla I take this for its resveratrol and polyphenols. Can’t imagine your Dr. would insist on the red wine, if this were an acceptable alternative. You can only eat beef stew so often  But if the rx is for alcohol to reduce anxiety/rapid heartbeat then personally I’d try some CBD edibles instead and just not tell her.
Rori, have no words of wisdom, only hugs. Glad you’re getting him to the Dr. UTI’s can cause aggression, pain, confusion too.`
Kylia here’s the way I prep those veggies: roast the brussels sprouts with a drizzle of EVOL and a sprinkling of kosher salt. Then sprinkle with balsamic vinegar and enjoy. For cauliflower, roast with a drizzle of EVOL, a squeeze of lemon juice, some garlic. When tender, top with finely grated parmesan. Not a fan of cooked cabbage but love cole slaw. Fresh young turnip greens can go in a salad, otherwise saute and serve with salt, pepper and a dash of hot sauce.
Kay if you can find an alcohol free red wine that doesn’t make me gag, I’d be eternally grateful!
Karen in VA ((hugs))
Allie I’m just glad Mary’s gone, that was another thorn you didn’t need.
Welcome @pdixon49, would you let us know what you’d like to be called and your general locale?
Tomorrow’s going to be a long day, ending with a drive to Gold Beach for Ash Wednesday service. First time I’ve attended this church’s evening services because of the 25 mile drive home on curving, winding 101 in the dark. But now that I'm on council, feel I must make the effort.

Hello to all the over 50s. I’m Paula and I’ve returned to MFP to get a handle on my weight gain (45lb) and some health issues that have emerged.
I’m amazed at how things just seem to go downhill at a rate of knots after 50.
2020 is the year of well-being for me and I’m sure many others and I am trying very hard to stay focussed.
I’d love some friends to partner on the way!

Karen - For us it was a blessing and it was handled beautifully. We were asked if that was what we wanted by the top consultant. She had COPD. My brother and I were both there beside her for a peaceful death. Wonderful, respectful care. Obviously it wasn't like that in every case, but I feel it is a shame it was discontinued. The guidelines should have been tightened, not abandoned. So many people do not understand death, or accept its inevitability. My mother only experienced love and peace. She was religious, so we had the hospital's woman priest come to say a few words with her before they put her on heavy morphine. She said my mother's lips moved to the Lord's Prayer. I was, and am, moved by that. (I am not religious, but it helped her).
Love to you and may the memory of your friend as she was grow stronger.

Good morning, all. Karen: and Heather: DMiL passed in the same way. She was 95, frail and bedridden, and slept most of the time towards the end. When we visited she often didn't wake up, but she was relatively lucid when she was awake. Near the end, the matron of the nursing home (a Veterans Home, as Dad was ex-Navy) and her own doctor discussed with us what should happen. We asked that she be made comfortable and allowed to go peacefully. The Family made sure she was not alone. It was a peaceful death, and my niece and myself were at her bedside with her when she passed. When the undertakers collect her remains, the staff of the nursing home formed a guard of honour as they removed the coffin. Very dignified and respectable. I agree about the LCP. It was a good idea, Heather but unfortunately it was abused by some unscrupulous people. (((Hugs))) for your DH, and hopes for a speedy remedy for him.
Allie: Safe home! Looking forward to some pics.
It's grocery day, so getting my list ready. Then I have Playreading this afternoon, and my crochet Group after dinner.
It looks quite springlike outside, but there's a nasty nip in the air.

Good Wednesday from Ohio,
Ginny- Be careful in your commute today. I know north of me is already seeing snow. Jacket weather for a week, now back to long johns-grrrrr!
Went to dinner with friends last night. Was fun. Got home around 7. Husband is on an eBay kick. I get that he is getting money for stuff that is just sitting around. Really, I get it. But I have to list it all. I worked on stuffs from 7-930. I just wanted to head to bed around 9-whining. At 930 I said I am done. That led to argument, really??? I just shut the door on him and went to bed. Some days his two year old comes out! BTW, for an hour of that he had tv on and was talking on his phone. Any way......whine over. Still just exhausted. Tomorrow I have to drive to Cincinnati for training day. Long day sitting, but just me and my music for 2 hours of driving (1 hr each way)
Allie- Safe travels! Mary is a nasty person, good riddance! My hygienist and I were just talking about corporate take overs in dentistry. I am so happy to say that mine isn't. When my last dentist retired, a corporation bought the practice. No one was happy there! I felt the dentist was trying to be a sales person every visit. I hope you at least got some recouping done while gone.
Machka- That seems to be how my days go when I have something I am trying to get done. You are amazing at getting things done though.
Meditation- I too would probably fall asleep if I tried while laying down. Might need to try adding while standing. Does taking deep breaths while singing itsy bitsy spider count? I don't remember how that started, but I find myself doing that when I get overwhelmed. 😋
Thank you for the tips on the veggies. May try the Brussels sprouts tonight roasted.
Have a safe day wherever you are!
Hugs (because some need them and I like them)
Welcome to the new ladies! Stop by often. Lots of strong women on here.
Make the best choices for you today!

Kylia - I too love roasted brussel sprouts. It is a relatively new love....my neighbors friend made them and I tried them....loved them. She said the secret is to roast them until you smell the funk, and leave them 3-4 minutes after that.
Okie in the TX Hill Country
PS - I also roast cauliflower, broccoli, squash.....4 -
Morning all! Jumping in real quick!
Katla- Yep, I am agreeing with the others, eat some grapes, blueberries, cocoa, etc. You don't need to drink red wine to reap the benefits. Now, if my doctor ever said, "Have a nice stout once a day..." I would be on that like white on rice!
Rori- So sorry to hear about your DH/DB and the altercation due to sundowners episode. When my MIL started having "violent/belligerent" episodes, her doctor put her on some med for anxiety and it helped. For a while. Eventually the thoughts that were creating the violent behavior were too strong for the meds and we had to put her in a home for her own safety and the safety of her husband. Sending prayers and thoughts of love to you, dear friend.
Diana- I do not strictly follow the Lenten procedure of "giving something up". I tried for many years to fast during Lent; but I work with small children 50 hours a week and hunger and children do NOT go together. About five years ago, I realized that there are 40 weeks between the beginning of Lent and Thanksgiving (American holiday). So I began the practice of 40 days of Mindful Eating. This meant (for me) that each Sunday (for 40 weeks) I would fast from 6pm Saturday night to 6pm Sunday evening. During that 24 hour period, I would allow myself a cup of rice and a cup of broth (to keep in mind the people in the world that have only that much to eat on a daily basis). IN conjunction with this fast, I would set aside $10/week (what I would spend, on average, for a meal) and at the end of the 40 weeks I would have $400 to send to a charity to fight hunger. My first day of Mindful Eating begins this Sunday. I hope my idea helps you figure out a way for you to put mindfulness into your life.
Karen VA - Hugs to you for the loss of your friend!
Amber- Chuck E Cheese. We are thinking of taking Joaquin there for his third birthday (in March). We probably won't eat there, because if I remember correctly from the days of taking my own kids there; getting them to sit and eat when there was SO much for them to do, was difficult.
Hugs to all of you! I have been reading but just no time to comment. But you are all in my thoughts each day! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)8 -
Kylia - Your spider song and breathing sounds perfect. Whatever brings your mind back into the present moment counts.
I sometimes do the tapping thing that was fashionable a few years ago. Sometimes a finger pressing thing combined with breathing that I learned at yoga. Sometimes I just concentrate on my breathing and current sensations. It's all good.
I find singing and dancing are wonderful for bringing me into the present and stopping my mind wandering. Also playing with the grandchildren. Last week's picture drawing competition with Edie was as good as a week's holiday!
French Circle tonight. A talk on the Breton soiree. There will be Breton music and cider. :drinker:

It's midweek already.
Kelly - I love the thought of your 40 weeks of mindful eating.
Rori - no words of wisdom regarding your DH's sundowner behavior. I recall my mom getting angry and lashing out during her final days, but she was entirely bedridden so her behavior was confined.
Heather - sending good thoughts to your DH regarding that blood test. Hopefully, had it been something pressing, the doctor would have immediately called and requested he get back in ASAP.
Karen in VA - so sorry to hear of your friend's protracted journey, and grateful for her passing. I'm impressed that you have kept in contact with your childhood friends for so long, and how neat to have that photo. I quickly lost touch with most of my class once I left for college then married and moved so far away. Thanks to Facebook I've reunited with them in a casual way.
By the way, welcome to you new ladies! We have lots to share if you need it. You'll find some of us are having success with Keto/low carb, some do well with CI/CO and exercise, some are doing Intermittent fasting. Many of us are exploring ways to maintain our weight and improve our health.
Before I go, if anyone is interested in a free docu-series about kicking sugar, here's one coming up starting March 2nd: https://www.kicksugarsummit.com/
Make it a fabulous day .
