Our public schools are having different responses. Some have canceled classes for the next week and some haven't. I'd love to hear the rationale behind the decisions. How did these school districts meet with city health officials and have conversations with each other and come to different conclusions? Edit: Apparently the other school districts have come on board with cancelling class for the next week or two after seeing the response of some others.
On the other hand, Six Flags is closed through the end of the month, jury duty for the county is suspended for 30 days, and all local universities have extended SB a week and then are going to online only through mid-April.
I'd rather San Antonio doesn't become another Seattle or NY. If we can take preventative measures NOW, we can slow the spread, ideally limit the spread, and more drastic measures won't be required. People just aren't taking it seriously, because "it's only one case" at this point.7 -
Public school systems are closing for at least two weeks around here, the governor called it.
So for some dark humor, I've checked some books out of Overdrive to read while potentially self-quarantining:

I was going to go to Costco for potting soil, traffic was backed up for two lights in both directions and the parking lot was FULL - not a single visible parking spot, even at the road... I nope’d out of there pretty quick!

Just had to share this. We are watching the championship of our state basketball tournament (televised- game is being played with limitations on spectators). During the player introductions, one player licked his fingers, wiped them on the bottom of his shoe, shook hands with the opposing player with the same hand, who then went and fist-bumped his teammates.

That is just all kinds of gross regardless of what viruses are going around.8 -
We had a couple of ladies who had been in Italy about a week ago. They both have since come to church. I don't think they were in northern Italy but I'm still concerned, especially as we have so many older people in our church. I think we're ok but the potential is still there. Someone earlier mentioned that we as Americans needed to start thinking less individualistic and more communal; I think this is a good example of that need.
A gentleman in our church has also left to visit his daughter in Virginia who also just got back from a trip to Italy right before it closed. We'll have to see if he refrains from coming to church.5 -
Several people have covered what MD's response is, so I won't beat a dead horse. My workplace is planning on implementing social distancing measures. That includes having non-essential onsite personnel work from home and having essential onsite personnel (like me and everyone else who does lab work) split into two groups, where one group works 3 days (e.g Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) and the other group works another 3 days (e.g Thursday, Friday, Saturday). The groups are not allowed contact with one another, except through phone/email.7

Yes! But you seem them do it all the time. And you often see professional players wiping their hands on the bottom of their shoes and then taking out their mouth guard.

Yes! But you seem them do it all the time. And you often see professional players wiping their hands on the bottom of their shoes and then taking out their mouth guard. indeed.
Currently listening to Trump's press conference. Apparently Google is helping to create a website for people to evaluate symptoms and risk factors, find testing at drive-thru test stations and expedite lab results.2 -

The 1st thought for many when they planned to play games in empty arenas was the protection of the crowd. As they thought it through, they correctly decided to cancel the games altogether to save the athletes from infecting each other. Basketball is a sweaty sport with a good amount of bodily contact.
Also, if players are doing this on camera in an arena, they are probably doing similar things, in general, all day.5 -

Dr. Cook said he's been terrified of this scenario for 40 years and lamented how woefully under-prepared we were for it.5 -

My niece just posted a breathless notice from "Member of Stanford Board" that it's too late once you start showing symptoms, your lungs are already 50% filled with fibroids! Japanese doctors recommend you check yourself daily by seeing if you can hold your breath for 10 seconds. If you start to cough you're probably infected.
Absolutely nothing mentioned about what you should do if you dont have symptoms but think you're sick (because duh, nobody's handing out tests for people with no symptoms) or how the heck people recover from their lungs being 50% filled with fibroids.
People of Facebook, PLEASE! Anything attributed to nameless doctors, researchers and scientists is BOGUS! If you're worried (and who wouldn't be), check with the official CDC or WHO websites, and get the real information before panicking. Please. Dont be part of the problem.18 -

This is just 73 days into this, it moved at a breakneck pace, and even given our current knowledge, there are millions crying foul about the current measures being taken (schools off, entertainment events canceled, etc.)
To go from having a brand new virus sprung on the world to having tests for billions doesn't happen instantly, they have to be safe, reliable, and then mass-produced.
I don't want to get into political discussions, but every country in the World has moved faster than us on testing. Even S Korea. I find it really hard to believe we couldn't come up with tests. WHO offered them, we turned them down. Strongly feel it was because its danger was so extremely underestimated. The CDC knew how dangerous it was, Italian docs and Chinese docs have been screaming from the rooftops on deaf ears. Europeans see Americans as overly arrogant, without great reason. That American arrogance will be unimaginably costly to all of us. We, as a nation (hopefully united better by this), will be very humbled soon.
We are a great country, don't get me wrong, but this will tax everyone and we will have to rely on other countries for help now.
Yes, we could have bought tests from the WHO to use as a bridge before our own tests were on line and not doing that set us back weeks for testing. Penny wise, pound foolish.8 -

And some of my Facebook "friends" need to learn that just because there's a photo of some guy with a stethoscope in a white coat (or just looking serious in a lab coat), and a specific name and title, that doesn't mean that guy is the person with the name/title, that the name/title even exist, and more. SMH.
ETA: On FB, I'm trying to counter the main fake stuff with clear facts, calmly, when I think it may have a hope of doing some good.. Telling people one is in that moment trying to correct that they're ignorant and don't know how to vet facts . . . doesn't help make my case there, mostly. Hope you'll forgive me for venting a little here. 14 -

Okay, as a person who doesn't follow sports I have a question: WHY do they wipe their hands on the bottom of their shoes?1 -
I work as a corrections officer in a jail. Today the Regional Health District Doctor came and spoke to us. There is not a single confirmed case in our city yet. The Dr. said they are here however. He said this is not just like the flu, and it's mortality rate is indeed higher. He said there are not enough testing kits. He said this is a very bad situation, and it will get much worse. He said all of us will know someone who will get this. For any naysayers still out there, who think this is a media panic or like the flu, this is the Regional Health doctor, that I heard in person.16
