Hi Ladies
Up to P40 - need to get a few chores done before going to check on mum.
People going mad here stockpiling dried goods and toilet paper! I tried to do an on line order yesterday and lots of things were "unavailable" and even soya milk was rationed to two cartons per order.
I had a visit to Harrogate planned in early April with friends, but we have put that on hold for the moment to see how things pan out. Also a trip to the Cinema on Monday has been cancelled. I have had many messages from CEOs of supermarkets and even the cinema explaining what they are doing to keep people safe, but it only takes one person who maybe doesn't know they have the virus, or has a mild version to infect others.
We are still going out on dog walks etc but keeping away from crowds as much as possible. Trying not to get too paranoid about the situation, but taking care/precautions.
Take care everyone

Good morning!
Up super early here... house cold so have some little heaters on until DH gets up to get the woodstove going in a few hours. And I hustled out to the garage to get the grow light turned on for the tomatoes. Heat mat is doing a good job of keeping their toes warm.
Here's your first TP joke of the day:Make it a good one, ladies.

My first assignment for one of my classes asks us to clarify the definitions of 'utopian' and 'dystopian' and use them to describe the impacts of social media on humanity.
We have to use research to do this, all appropriately cited of course so I won't be using any of your comments ... but particularly in light of current issues, what are your thoughts?
Does social media have a 'utopian' impact on humanity or a 'dystopian' impact?
Machka in Oz
MachkaIf I had to argue one side, I would choose 'dystopian'.
Karen in Virginia
Yes ... I'm torn.
Part of my job for the past 23 years has been to work with IT (and social media) knowing full well the problems ... but also trying to "sell" it and promote all the good things.
My paper will discuss both sides, but I'm not sure I'll present a firm conclusion.

Margaret - I'm so glad your son was able to phone you. You are doing so well practising serenity in the face of great stress, with your husband ill as well. One thing is sure, worrying doesn't help anyone. It must be hard. Our children get to us in ways that no one else can. Sending many virtual (((HUGS))).
Stupid reporting of government advice is panicking people over here. Tabloid newspapers are a lot to blame. Grrrrrr!
I hope to get outside today. Not sure about rain showers. I need a run.
Thinking of getting to the hairdresser tomorrow before everything shuts up. I only need a tiny trim, but I don't want to leave it. I was going to have it done before the cruise.
Still haven't had a phone call from Saga. They are doing it in order of the sailings, so we are not at the top of the list.
I'm reading an excellent book at the moment by Bill Bryson. He is a great favourite over here. This one is THE BODY, A GUIDE FOR OCCUPANTS. He has a very accessible, humorous way of writing, but a great deal of fascinating information is in there that would interest a lot of you. It's so good it keeps me awake longer than I should be! DH bought it for me for Valentine's Day. He knows me so well.
Duck tonight, basted with chipotle paste, a few roast potatoes for DH, and brussel sprouts. Yummo.

Machka:I would split the difference right down the middle. It started back in the days of ARPANET as a way for researchers to collaborate, and I think that need and drive to collaborate across barriers and borders has been fulfilled over and over again. I also think, in these days of far-flung family members, it's been amazing to be able to watch, both in still pictures and video, as my grandkids grow up. It's also truly allowed the development of telemedicine, and many other positive moves.
But the anonymity available through much of social media has unleashed the darker side of our natures, spawning online bullying and hate speech in much greater numbers than those that aren't anonymous. (https://www.psychologicalscience.org/news/the-psychology-of-online-comments.html)
I was also going to point to the current situation and say the coronavirus was a case in point, but honestly, most of what's happening with the coronavirus in the United States right now was absolutely possible with the previous media environment, from the wild stock market swings to the politicality of it all and the scare stories. I do blame social media for the ability of other countries to affect our political process here, but I suppose that could have been done in other ways as well--disinformation has ever been with us.
The conspiracy theories that are springing up now to infest social media are spawned by every level of communication from the troll in the basement on up. I don't believe they were driven by social media, I think social media just changed the speed of hearing about them. I think conspiracy theories and such are endemic to humanity. We always want something/someone to blame. We just hear about it sooner now.
Heather - loved the pics!
Margaret - so glad your son called you!
Well, my Fitbit gave up the ghost last night sometime between midnight and 2 a.m. Got up at 4:30 and looked up what the green flashing light, and apparently it means it just wore slap out. Won't even charge up. It's long out of warranty, so oh well.
It's got me thinking that now might be the time, finally, to put away the numbers--put away the scale, or at most get on it only once once a month or so. (Oddly enough, the scale's battery is also reading "Low" when I goose it in the mornings.) I don't know if I can let them all go--A nice slow day around here, and a good day to make the decision, I'm thinking.
Love y'all,

Morning!
Heather I also recommend Bryson’s “a walk in the woods”. Laugh out loud funny take on hiking the Appalachian trail”. Right now I’m rereading bourdain’s “kitchen confidential” such a fine writer
Lisa sometimes I like a reset from my external tools—a break from relying on them, but I couldn’t deal without my pen and paper! I rely on that journaling to keep me clear. I haven’t stepped on the scale and never used a Fitbit but I still maintain through writing lists, goals, feelings etc
Will make my favorite red lentil soup today for the week, comforting.

NYKAREN- My favourite is Notes On A Small Island. I've never laughed as much. His description of how the British react when offered a cup of tea is priceless. I often catch myself reacting in just the same way.

Good Sunday!
In a way I am happy the banquet got cancelled. We had a lovely visit with friends just catching up. We haven't seen them in 2 years. It was a late night. We did go out to the local place for dinner. It was busy, but not as busy as normal. Our favorite server told us she just joined door dash to make some extra money. Her school is out and tips are down. May be a great time for door dash!
We ran a couple of errands after work to pick up a few things. The saddest part really were the seniors who seemed really confused as to why the people were buying up all the meats, bread, and TP. Sad! We were able to purchase what we needed so was happy. My dog has food so she won't be eating us-lol!Machka- I had to look up those terms. I knew Utopia but not dystopia. I would say that dystopian is the state of current society. Prior to social media, I really felt our society was more the dream. Now I feel people are more doom and gloom. Overwhelmed by information. I think I answered your question in the correct ( I hate when I can't think of the right word! Scenario. I really need to read more🤔-
Bills to pay, paperwork to be done, 32 F outside with snow, so no walk today. I am a warm weather girl!
Lisa- I see why you right such great proposals. You are so eloquent. If my son in law wasn't already so busy with other tasks, I would have him writing my warranties. His sound so professional. Mine are more like a 4th grader. " the belt jumped off the pulley and was lodged under it." I will admit writing was never my strong suit in school. I write like I talk.
I might as well tackle a to-do while the household sleeps. Not sure when the teenagers fell asleep, but only my husband and I are awake.
Get some fresh air if possible today.
Choose good foods to keep our bodies healthy.
Move a little more than yesterday.
Do something you love!
Thank you for the beautiful comments on my picture.
Love the watercolor! So peaceful.
Love the baby blanket.
My colorbooks were out for the teens last night. Need to color some more. Also need to start cross stitching again.

3) I need to run some experiments to see if I can access a few things from work at home. Not expecting much but it will give me an idea what might need to be done.
Machka in Oz
So ... a few of my work things work at home! I can book leave and take the short online courses they keep encouraging us to take. Not overly helpful. I'll have to ask for home access for a couple other things.
BTW - because we don't know if we're going to be sent home or moved or whatever, I've taken the opportunity to clean my office area ... specifically to clean out my office area.
I've been in that particular office for about 4 years now and have amassed personal stuff there like shoes, greeting cards just in case I need them for something all of a sudden, a brand new spare pair of socks, boxes of tea I've never even opened, food, etc.
So I've been bringing a few things home each day.
It's probably not a bad idea ... there are a few things which are past their use-by dates!! Plus it's a chance to organise things. Kind of a fresh start. I do feel better when I've got an organised work space.
Machka in Oz
I did the same thing on Friday . Since I'll be working from home for at least the next 2 weeks (I have remote access to my work desktop), I had to figure out what I would need to bring home with me in order to get work done. That caused a bit of a clean-up of my desk and work area - which needed to be done anyway. Now I just need to get myself organized at home, which means cleaning out the office today so I actually have a place to work!
A lot of our employees who can't easily do their jobs from home (food service staff, housekeeping, etc) are being given a chance to do some online training courses so they don't have to use leave time - or not get paid if they don't have leave time to use. I'm glad they were able to offer that option so people will still have a way to get paid. It's going to be an interesting 2 weeks.

Good morning! The sun is shining here!
As I've mentioned, I live with a worrier. It's hard not to be affected by his concerns especially since everything he's been worried about is coming to pass. I've made multiple trips to the store both for him and my work place. I'm the only housekeeper at our church ... multiple buildings but under seating capacity under the mandatory closing numbers... so we're open. I just want you all to know that our church is the cleanest public space the folks in this area will come across today! Until the first person sneezes.
My younger son, a student in Nashville, decided yesterday to come home. He lives by himself in a very small apartment. His girlfriend recently decided to "take a break," and he's been depressed. I think self-isolation with his family is most likely a good idea. I'd appreciate good thoughts as he drives from Nashville to Buffalo today straight through ... about 12 hours. He's never driven this at all, let alone by himself.
As a result of learning I have another mouth to feed, I went back out shopping yesterday. Eerie at best. The fear and panic is palpable, but controlled and civil in my area. Aldi's shelves were bare... which makes sense. If you are on a limited budget, you have to wait until payday and then shop at the most economical place you can. Other stores were stocked with everything but meat, dry goods, TP, water, soap, etc. Interesting what people think are necessities. We have plenty and my produce box confirmed this morning they're delivering my order on Wednesday.
Aldis ... this was the soup/snack aisle ... but the whole store looked like this. I took the photo to convince my elderly parents from going out.
I confess I'm tired. So today I plan to rest and recharge. Next week is going to be challenging.
I know we keep religion out of this thread, but I just want all of you to know that I'm praying for each one of you and your families. Keep sane. Keep well!

The art museum is closed, so my date will be just lunch and maybe a walk if the weather holds. This will be my last outing for awhile. I hope it goes well.3

Memento for 2020!
13 -
Beth - Glad your son is coming home, good place to be. I am hoping all of those folks stripping store shelves will be sharing with elderly family and neighbors. Thinking positive thoughts here!
Margaret - so glad you heard from your son, and wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed that honeymoon photo. Were we that young once?
I found a faded photo of myself and DH from summer 1977, still in Indiana. He hadn't shaved or cut his hair since his departure from the Marines the previous November. It's a photo of a photo..... I didn't remember having such red hair But I do remember thinking I was fat...
Karen in VA - Great photo of the grands with their other grandparents in Corsica! Warmed me up. Appreciated the summery sunshine!
Carol - ah yes, memento of 2020. We will have to think of a slogan...I'm sure folks are already tossing around ideas, lol.

Laundry in the dryer and will do some cleaning..I am taking this time to reflect on my past and pray for my future.. with this condo complex as it is 55 and over everyone is sort of staying away from one another.. there are a quite a few here In compromised positions COPD ,breathing issues and one of my dear friends is down in Florida and isnt able to travel back because of her age and fragile health...
I'm spending alot of time with dear Alfie xoxo9 -
Carol - I literally laughed out loud with the TP earrings.
Kylia - What a lovely compliment. Thank you!
Rained for 36 hours, so not possible to work outside without inadvertently sinking in the mud. So an entire Sunday just to play. Just putting those things I cannot change to the side for now, as I've changed everything I can.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR6 -
Carol - Brilliant! I want some of those!
Did my 5 k! :drinker: So pleased. It's hard to catch a moment when it's not blowing or raining. It was breezy, but not bad, but the waves were HIGH!
Plus I've booked a hair trim for tomorrow afternoon.
Couple more photos from the party. Sent to me by my DDIL.
Here is proof that I can still crouch down in a squat, holding a cake and a heavy shoulder bag. That must be a workout, right? We had just come in the door.
Here is my son and DDIL
And here are my three lovelies on Bea's birthday morning.
Tried to get those in a spoiler but couldn't manage it. Sorry.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Lanette ~ You had lovely red hair and you weren't fat!
Heather ~ Love the photos. Your family looks like such happy people.
Effects of the Virus in my area: My son is worried that the restaurant he manages may have to shut down for a while. He said the number of folks eating out has dropped drastically. This will mean a loss of income for a lot of people! My BnL's assisted living facility will not let any visitors come in. If he needs something my husband will have to leave it outside the door. All the schools in our area are shut down so DnL will have to do digital teaching and her children digital learning. My DnL's mother who has been on a mission trip in Africa is supposed to come home today. We are now all worried that she will have to be quarantined for 14 days.
Glad to know that today has been noted as a National Prayer Day!
