M in OZ: It sounds as though the hospital didn’t have adequate protection for its employees. I am sorry there is an outbreak.
Katla in NW OregonSnowflake1968 wrote: »Katla - I don’t know about Tasmania but here in Alberta the definition of Outbreak is not as dire as it sounds.
We at the nursing home are considered to be on Outbreak as per the below guidelines from AHS
Case Definition/COVID-19 Symptoms
Outbreak Definition
* Onset of new illness including:
o cough, OR
o fever (over 38 degrees Celsius), OR o shortness of breath, OR
o sore throat, OR
o runny nose, OR
o diarrhea (only if in residents/clients
of congregate settings), OR
o vomiting (only if in residents/clients
in congregate settings)
(fever may not be prominent in elderly individuals)
Suspected COVID-19 outbreak
o one resident/client or staff member who exhibits any of the symptoms of COVID-19
Probable COVID-19 outbreak
o two or more individuals (residents/clients or staff) who are linked with each other who exhibit any of the symptoms or COVID-19. Individuals who are linked have a connection to each other (e.g. share a room, dine at the same table, received care from the same staff member, etc.)
Confirmed COVID-19 outbreak:
o any one individual confirmed to have COVID-19 including:
o any resident/client who is confirmed to have COVID-19 o any staff member who is confirmed to have COVID-19
Yes ... I think there are 13 people at that hospital or associated with that hospital in northern Tasmania who have COVID-19. It started with one staff member on April 5 and now they've found 13, almost all of whom are staff members. They are investigating where these staff members may have come in contact with it.
Unfortunately it is a relatively small hospital and if 13 have it, more could. It also potentially puts patients (who are in there for other things) in danger. So I think patients are being tested, then moved to another hospital ... which puts pressure on that hospital's resources ...

I wonder how many of the people that hospital is moving to other hospitals are false negatives. Yikes.

A question about C-19 immunity, once one has survived the disease and is immune, does that mean they can no longer carry the infection to others?
Amber the story of those triplets touched me deeply. Thank you. Like them, my “real Mother” was my mama.
Rebecca Dorothy Hamill indeed!
Barbie brava for takikng the high road on the TP.
Margaret the Chimes story also touched me deeply. Read an essay by Italian Physician Amedeo Capetti “Grateful for each breath…” that also resonated.
SuziQ “You need two $5 bills
Rita love it when the desert blooms!
Julie hooray for the vinyl gloves score. No gloves or individual packets of “Wet Ones” antibacterial wipes here… and TP is rationed, but like Barbie we’re ok for now.
Welcome @PipAlways in Nebraska. We already have a pip in WA, she applies her boot to us when needed. We’re glad you found us too!
Janet O in E.MO it is so important for our wellbeing to have something constructive to do, glad your mom has found hers making masks.
Katla I was so dissatisfied with the paperback I picked up at Freddie’s last week, I decided to borrow a page from you and am re-reading a most favorite cosy mystery series by Charlotte MacLeod. Ah. Just right.
Pip I could curl up with your dogs, both present and beyond.
Machka I can mimic that ginger cat’s look!
Our first attempt at Zoom Line Dancing together/apart was a little rocky with audio and familiarity issues, but way better than dancing alone. Some joined from their phones, others from laptops or tablets. Everybody felt better and was eager to try again Friday. Old schedule, new normal.

Barbara This is a very good question. Since the virus can be recovered from the nasal passages of dogs, which appear to be immune to the virus, it is logical that the same can be true of humans who are immune to the virus. The inoculum (number of viruses present in a sneeze or a cough) would be far lower than for a person who was actively infected, but still…are there true 'carriers'? This is a question scientists are scrambling to find out. The more dangerous, in my view, are people who are actually currently infected, but in an asymptomatic prodrome stage (no symptoms yet, but infected with the virus busily replicating away) because their sneeze or cough has a huge inoculum and they are highly contagious. This could be you or me or the neighbor's child or the guy that brings the Amazon package or the guy you are talking to in the parking lot.
Maintaining social distance is no easy task, but it's so important. We literally take our lives into our own hands every time we go out. Because it now appears that airborne spread from breathing and talking is possible, even social distancing is not good enough. Barriers over the eyes (glasses or goggles) and mouth/nose (mask), even if they are not medical grade, further helps to decrease the risk of getting or giving C-19.4 -
I’m a day behind (pg 25) I’m writing at 4 am…just can’t sleep. I need more exercise and less food!!
Well, after the scare, even though the symptoms all screamed CoVid and the doctors were sure, DDIL’s brother got a negative on his test. He is still having trouble lowering the fever, and he has had trouble eating. I wonder what the chances are for a false negative?? Her Mom’s BF is waiting on results from a test – his seems more likely to be positive because he has traveled as a truck driver to NY and FL recently. Still praying they are somehow all okay!!
Rebecca Athena the dog trainer!! Adorable beyond words!
Margaret Sounds like you are doing well during this difficult time! I’m so glad you can walk with your son. That is so good for both of you!
Kim Congratulations on the plant sale! Sounds like you were very successful after all your hard work! Sending prayers for your cousin!!
Machka I like the picture with the faces and was happy to find them all. Great activity ideas and tips and funny about the towels…
Kate Beautiful pictures!
Karen Love your suggestions for Viv!
Lanette Great jokes!! I laughed out loud at all of them!
Rita Great breakfast (I want one) and beautiful wildflowers!
Barbie Wow, on the doggy walk!!
Amber Things don’t sound good with the accounts deactivated, and so sad with the children being sent away with father in a coma. Prayers for all who are on the front lines of the fight against this awful virus!

Warning. Potentially very upsetting personal C-19 thoughts ahead. No, I haven't tested positive. Quite frankly, I wouldn't put that in a spoiler.I am revising my Five Wishes document this week to include what I would like to have happen if I am faced with being or dying alone in a hospital without family allowed to visit or stay with me. It's not that difficult to figure out what I'd want, but articulating it is taking a toll on me emotionally. Crying a lot the last 2 days as I come to grips with it. Need to get this processed and then behind me. My partner was questioning why I felt the need to revise my Five Wishes document, and now she's upset, too. Ah me...10

Hi ladies
Karen thanks for the ideas, I keep mentioning I'm here if she wants to vent how unfair life is etc but so far she hasn't taken me up on the offer. I have mentioned that Marie Curie and Macmillan nurses are there to help too.
Lanette loved the Dexter meme, I used to watch it all the time, but then I got too anxious watching it and had to ask DD to give me the highlights - don't know why, I've never had that feeling with a TV show before.
Another lovely day here again - I hope people still keep to the lockdown, I've noticed a few people are starting to venture out a little more than last week. Poor Boris spent a second night in the ICU.
Not sure what to do today, I have a few "projects" I'd like to finish, but not sure if I have the energy. As it's a sunny day, might spend a few hours in the garden reading my book
I have to pop to mum's later to take her lottery, I might have to have a word about how often I go to the shop for her, I need to cut down to a few days a week. Pay her bills all on one day rather than the due date, it won't matter if they are a few days late.
Well best get on, take care ladies

Hello one and all.
It's the start of a new day here in sunny and soon to be very hot South Florida. We are expecting temperatures to be in the mid-90s for the next two days. Then there will be a slight break in the temperature which will be just in time for the weekend. Yeah!
What am I grateful for this morning? Let me count the ways.- I am grateful for another day on this sweet planet.
- I am grateful for the heavenly solid 7.5 hours of sleep I had last night.
- I am grateful for the overnight email I received from my car insurance provider. The company is automatically giving everyone a 15% discount for those renewing their policy from April 8th through October 7th. I fall within this time period - yeah!!
- I am grateful I am basically a natural girl and know how and do maintain my own spa treatments. During yesterday's return home from work commute time savings I dyed and shaped my eyebrows, took care of my upper lip, and completed a quick facial.
- I am grateful for my capacity to see the beauty in things both great and small.
TMIDying one's eyebrows really make your eyes pop. I have found using Just for Men's Beard and Moustach product great for this task. It is semi-permanent, it is designed for multiple uses, and only takes 5 minutes. I have also found it is better to go with a color that is a least one shade lighter than your hair color. I have dark brown hair and use the light brown color which is actually two shades lighter than my hair.
For the upper lip I use Sally Hansen's Express Wax. It can be heated. I find using it cold works fine. It takes some time getting used to the amount to use, but once you get the hang of it, it is very easy. The product really isn't wax it is sugar-based.
Do not get me wrong. I love a spa day and having someone else take care of me. I just cannot justify the cost of bi-weekly/monthly treatments. Many of the office gals spend upwards of $100+ per month getting their nails and toes done. We all have our priorities and needs and I am not judging here because I completely get it.
I must say so long for now. My morning walk is calling me and then it is off to get ready for work. I must allow time for the extremely long walk to my guestroom office - lol!
Hugs to all.

Pyjamas!! And I have to say I wear my evening comfy-wear from about mid-morning to mid-evening and pjs the rest of the time.
Except for exercise. I do change into exercise clothes once a day.
"While it seems a surprise sales on items like nightwear have increased, spending on small luxuries during times of hardship isn’t new – in fact it’s a phenomenon dubbed the “lipstick effect”.
The theory is that when facing an economic crisis consumers are less likely to spend big, instead spending on less costly luxury goods that make them feel better, like a lipstick."

Morning, afternoon and evening all,
Just chugging along in my corner... honestly feeling a little guilty at how little my life has changed, while the world around me is getting stranger every moment.
Work vent - boring, I'm sure, so I hid it.Right now, my CEO is jumping up and down (metaphorically... and remotely) saying "get more grants, get more grants," and asking "why did we get denied," when the answer is always the same -- donors are focused on people with basic needs, food, rent, job losses, and so on. Supporting Girl Scouts, to put it bluntly, is seen as supporting a luxury in these troubled times. Frustrating, but completely understandable. At the same time, these girls desperately need something to stay the same in a very scary world. We can and do supply that - stability, sanity, a way to talk to each other remotely, as well as staff and volunteers. They need this so much right now!
While I'm not the only one running into brick walls in serial fashion, it's giving me a dang headache. Even this issue is not new, though--many of the big foundations and United Ways were turning to support those same basic causes long before covid came along.
Hard to get the massive organizations to see that while they will absolutely be able to help people that way, they're treating a symptom. If they don't cure the root cause, the symptoms never go away. Once they've fed them, and housed them, they've taught them that they will be fed and housed, instead of teaching them how to get out of the situation. Believe me, I truly understand that when you are that poor, it's really hard to think beyond the immediate outlook--I am in no way downplaying the need (especially now) of those who don't know where that next meal is coming from.
Nonetheless, Girl Scouting was created to help all girls see their own potential, and for those who live in poor families, to help them see their way out. A large part of my job is finding funding so girls whose families can't afford the $25 membership fee still get a chance to be Girl Scouts, to see a different future. We fund thousands of girls' memberships every year for just that reason--so they see the leader inside themselves, and are given the tools to create a better future for themselves and their families.
Don't need solutions, honestly, just trying to get it all off my head so I can put my head down and go back to work.
Welcome to those who are new, we're so pleased you're here.
KJ - it was good to see you pop in with an icon... we do worry about our little family here...
Allie - thinking about you, girl.
Time to go get my groove on on the elliptical. The best part about exercising at home is I can sing to all the songs.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR

Lisa - Do you put all that in your grant applications? Makes sense to me.
I'm like you in that my life has hardly changed and I'm celebrating not having FOMO. I'm also happy that I haven't got packing anxiety for the cruise that was due to start on Saturday.
I did my bit this morning by emailing my friend in York to try to keep her spirits up. She normally rushes about, living in chaos, in order to keep anxiety at bay. She can't do that at the moment. Her spirits are low. Even though she has recovered from the virus. I'm keeping in touch with her.
I also rang my old yoga friend. She was also low and having computer problems. She and her older husband are not going out at all, because her family are being over protective. Oh well. She is normally a very people person who loves to serve. A bit like Allie. People like me, who are anti social, find it much easier. I'm also an indoor person.
Having said that, I will go out for a run today.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx5 -
2 km beach walk today ... and 20 minutes on the rowing machine.
And about a million steps up and down and up and down and up and down the hall tossing toys for Rhody. He loves to chase them!! I throw one down the hall, he races after it and catches it. I walk down the hall to collect it from him and throw it back into the lounge room, he races after it and catches it. I walk back into the lounge room and collect the toy then toss it down the hall ... and over and over and over!
M in Oz9 -
Heather - oh yes, it all goes in there... this was my ending to the grant that went out yesterday:Your funding will help us continue to operate, help us supply girls with the support they need so much, and give us the gift of time, as we continue to reach out to other funders across the area and beyond.
We know that those who are struggling for their basic needs are your first priority.
But girls are ours.
Thank you for considering our request.
Note: This was for a $1,000 grant, and part of the answer for what their funding would do for our organization. We took a financial hit approximately 300 times that maximum ask of them, so the real answer is "not much." But, nonetheless, I persist in asking.
Sweaty, but feeling incredibly virtuous for getting on that machine yet one more time.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR8 -
Hi, i like it when i can get online here daily. only 41 posts since my last post. less daunting.
@PipAlways Welcome!
@bwcetc as long as everyone keeps a 2m distance, washing hands, wears gloves, etc, i suppose they are respecting instructions. if they are not, that is more worrisome.
@grandmaille i'm sorry you are feeling so unwell. I hope you feel better soon.
@Katla49 nice to be reading books.
@stltrimom1015 how nice of your mom to make masks.
@JRsLateInLifeMom how annoying about the fake news about barring kids. That was a real hypothesis for the heat. About babies to youth was the news a few weeks ago. Noone under 14 had died. Then that changed.Congrats on progress w SV. i believe social distancing will be the new norm. when i speak to people live "face to face" it's exceptional now. "they" say this will go on in some form for 18 months, maybe (probably) not in lockdown, but with masks, hand washing, distance; after such a long time it will become somewhat engrained for some.
@kymarai i had never heard of air-fried chicken (or anything). Sorry about concert. Maybe Cher will be around for a while still.
@auntiebk i think covid19 can't be spread through breathing once immune, but one could still transmit it by touching a thing and and another. much less of a risk though. I can't imagine zoom line dancing but glad to hear it is going in the right direction. we need to nourish our souls.
@KetoneKaren yeah the number of false negatives is freaky.
@LuciBThinner the % of false negatives is major. Slate talks about 30% or more in article from this week: 30% in china and possibly more in the usa.
@LisaInAR good luck with the fundraising; i hear you. a regular presence and support in this time is key.
went for early morning walk. several work emails. breakfast. fell fast asleep after walk (not common). something went down the wrong way and i coughed up a storm. i'm sure it must freak out the neighbors a little to hear someone coughing a lot. i've had a very mild cough for a month. possibly linked to seasonal allergies. i can get by without antihistimines in the city most days, especially if i'm not going out. i usually take maybe 4 pills per year on bad the worst days. i feel like doing nothing today. From everything i've read 4 weeks of mild cough is not to worry about. 1 week or 2 could be more worrisome. it felt very mild from the get-go. ideally i'd have a very light case of COVID19 and would be immune.
feel like not cleaning, not filing, not meditation (maybe meditating), not so much reading a book...
feel like lazing reading news, watching a video, meditation (a little maybe) and maybe doing some prep for tomorrow's class. i need to listen to the radio class podcast and note things i can tell the students. the radio guy invited us to do another radio class if we like. i think i need to rest. physically i feel low energy. i think the aloneness and limitation on when we can go and the stress is tiring. i avoid looking at numbers so far today. will look this evening if not before. it generally upsets me even if i am pretty stoic and detached to some degree about this.5 -
Happy Wednesday
Count me among those whose lives haven't changed much. Ten years ago, when I was still working, it would have been a much different story.
Yesterday, I actually dug out my steam iron and my cast iron sewing machine and whipped up some masks. When the world wakes up again, I need to take the machine in for a good cleaning and oiling. It groaned but did a fair job.
Monday afternoon I got a text from my BFF who went into work to get a few things done she couldn't do at home. She was shocked that a lot of folks were gathered in the meeting room at a pot-luck birthday lunch for the boss, whooping it up and laughing just like old times, and she heard coughing. She refused to join the crowd. Then she went to Walmart where lots of folks were wearing masks. I asked her if she had one, she said no.
Well, now she'll have some. They are one-layer cloth, but better than nothing. Pipe cleaner works fine for a nose pinch. I wore one for a while yesterday, it was comfortable enough. I'll crank out a few more for us today then put everything away.
I see a lot of nice cloth masks for sale on Etsy. $7 to $10 ea and up seems reasonable, really.
OK, need to close for now. Dogs rule.
Make it a super day, ladies! I know I have a lot of catching up to do!
