Loved getting to know many of you a little better, thank you to all the answers to both mine and Machka's questions.
Isn't it funny how we assume our experience is the same as everyone? Witness Heather's tomato fetish.
As for me, I grew up with Sonic Drive-Ins. On Friday nights that was the place all the boys would go cruising, either with their girlfriends or their buddies, and drive pickup trucks that were far too loud up to circle the Sonic to see who was there and who wasn't, and then do the same thing at the only strip mall in town, where there was a certain section of the parking lot called "The Sittin' Hole," where you would talk to other people. The conversations were from your cars/trucks mind you. If someone actually got out of a vehicle, it was probably to start swinging punches. American car and truck culture wasn't just pervasive, it was unavoidable. If you were walking around town you were busted broke, or just broke up, or your vehicle just broke down. It was never a good thing.
If I seem nostalgic, it's only because it was a time when I was incredibly innocent, not because it was such a good time for me. Vivid memories, but snapshots, times of high emotion, whether good or bad.
On the subject of emotion, I can't help thinking of my sister-in-law, Brigh. Her 28-year-old daughter committed suicide last weekend. I never met the daughter, but of course my husband did, and of his six sisters, Brigh is my husband's favorite, so it broke his heart. One of our board members who I think so much of also lost her 34-year-old son in an accident this weekend.
One author said, "In the English language, there are orphans and widows, but there is no word for the parent whose child dies." We literally have no words for the fulfillment of our worst fear.

Barbie ~ Your tulips are beautiful! I have some that came up this year and quickly faded away.
Kylia ~ My heart goes out to you and your family. So sad!
Lanette ~ Your chirping fire alarms must have been a bit scary and then almost funny trying to calm them down.
Irish Terri ~ What an adventure your vacation was.
The governor of my state is getting beat up by a lot of folks for his manner of opening up the state.

There is a long road ahead before the state can return to ‘normal’
While coronavirus restrictions may start to be eased within a month, it will be much longer before Tasmania will return to “normal life”.
"Political and business leaders are predicting a return to “normal life” for Tasmanians in 12 to 18 months.
But — until a vaccine is found — Tasmanians will live with some form of restrictions to prevent the spread of coronavirus."

Looks like we'll be hiding out on our island for a while yet.
I guess that's OK ... we aren't able to go anywhere anyway.

Lisa - I don't think it's a tomato fetish, it's an olive oil and garlic fetish. There is a blight that's affecting Italian olive trees and I'm already hoarding olive oil. I also can't believe how good lettuce tastes with EVOO and garlic. I discovered that in France too. I was 12.
I was writing this morning in my memoir about the Coffee House in Horsham I used to frequent when I was 14-15 years old. A similar kind of growing up story to yours. Instead of trucks we had Mods from Crawley selling Purple Hearts at the door. I used to spend hours there on one drink, it was a hot Ribena that ended up cold. It was full of cigarette smoke. And boys, boys, boys.
So sorry about the young people losing their lives. Terrible.

Barbie: Beautiful tulip photo! :flowerforyou:
Amber: Congratulations on being able to wear your beautiful ring!
Tina: Bob’s Redmill has a fabulous gluten free brownie mix. Yum! Firenza has a GF Chocolate Chip Cookie mix but I haven’t tried it yet. Gluten free items are NOT low calorie. :ohwell:
Heather & Lanette: I’m confused about the percent chance of dying conversation. My opinion is that we all have 100% eventuality of dying. The question is when, and why. If we can avoid major problems like aggressive cancer and severe pneumonia or catastrophic auto accidents, I think we have a good chance of growing up to be old ladies. My parents smoked themselves to death. It was horrible for them. It was horrible to witness, too.
Terri: What an amazing cruise adventure! I’m happy the pirates were washed away by an excellent ships crew. :flowerforyou:
Heather: I’m pleased you think that the real me is wonderful. I’m sorry to hear about your unpleasant dream. I haven’t had a bad dream that I’ve remembered since I was quite young. I guess that makes me lucky.
Machka: I’m glad your van is useable!
Lisa: My Auntie lost her 16 year old daughter in a car accident. Then she lost her son in Viet Nam and her husband to cancer. She kept on living and eventually died from cancer at 90. She had taken low dose estrogen for years and it was a probable cause of the cancer. All of her nieces and nephews came to the funeral and spoke about her courage and generosity. Her pastor was overwhelmed. He had no idea how courageous she was until we spoke of her.
We have a rainy morning today. I think the plants in my yard will be happy for the fresh water.

Hey Pals! Just wanted to stop by....Life has been crazy for me. Working from home everyday is intense. We have a lot of critical contracts in the works. I think my work week is about 55 hours a week now. We have lost 2 family members and 1 family friend this month. We remain mentally and physically heathy so I'm not complaining.
Stay safe!

April 24, 2018 ... my husband got a speaking valve and could talk through the purple thing in his neck. At that point, his only word was "Yeah". He was also deep in Post Traumatic Amnesia and has absolutely no memory of this time.
But fortunately, he was breathing on his own and was not using a ventilator anymore. He had been on a ventilator for almost a month. I've got a pretty good idea what it takes to keep a person breathing ... and the exhaustion a person feels trying to breath on their own when they start to wean off the ventilator.
In addition to spending about a month on a ventilator, he also had pneumonia just about the entire time. They had tried so many different antibiotics and were becoming worried because he wasn't getting better. But they did tell me that once he was able to sit up, he should start to recover from the pneumonia ... and he did.
My experience with a nebuliser is this. At times the nurses had to remove the speaking valve to suction and attach a nebuliser.
Given his accident and resulting circumstances 2 years ago, we are both a bit worried about COVID-19. So we're trying to follow the suggestions I made in an earlier post.

Tere RVA- Sorry for so many losses for you during all this. Big hugs stay safe
My Ring I can only wear going out the diamond 💍 seems to cut JR if I wear it do diaper changes to him running jumping on me so hubby hated it but agreed it goes in the closet until I’m heading out of the house. I’ll be glad to be able to wear it all day take it off only for night time (I used to bathe with it on even lol).

Katla - I already am an old lady! I would like to live long enough to finish my memoir, but if I was taken tomorrow I would feel I have had a very good life and outlived many people I admire. I do not want people to mourn me, but I fear DH would.
At my dinner wake (not having a funeral) I want played "Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think". That's my motto.
DDIL sent me a great speeded up video of the kids on their blow up water slide in the garden. We have been blessed with fabulous weather throughout this lockdown.

So we ventured into the topic of food ...
What are your top three (or 4 or 5) favourite foods or meals?
M in Oz1 -
Tere in RVA: I am so sorry about your family losses.
Tina: DH wanted me to give you a chocolate cake recipe that doesn’t require boxed products. It uses Bob’s Redmill Gluten Free baking flour, and your own chocolate cake recipe. The gluten-free flour is the only substitution I make. Here is my recipe:
Black Bottom Cake:
3 c sifted gluten free all-purpose flour (Bobs)
2 c sugar
½ c cocoa
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 c water
2/3 C cooking oil
2 tbsp vinegar
2 tsp vanilla
Sift dry ingredients together. Stir in remaining ingredients. Beat until well combined. For cupcakes, bake at 350 degrees F for 30-35 minutes. Cake is done when knife or toothpick comes out clean. We usually use a cake pan instead of cupcakes and use a toothpick to check doneness. I seem to overbake the cupcakes a bit but my cake pan comes out better.

We were!It was during the time of the Somalia Pirates attacking ships in the Indian Ocean. We had a very close call. It was shortly before that couple were kidnapped near Mauritius.
A group of pirates waited for our ship to leave the Seychelles. They attacked the ship about 200 miles out with Kalashnikovs and AK46s. One passenger and several crew members were injured.
Fortunately, some of the passengers had noticed the pirates climbing up grappling ropes to one of the lower decks and chucked loungers at them and knocked them off the ropes while others rushed off to alert the crew.
They were also trying to break into the lower deck gangway doors. The Israeli security guards returned fire, and the crew used high powered hoses to dislodge the pirates attacking the doors, while the ship got up to full steam and left them in our wake.
We got a Spanish frigate as an escort early the next morning.
We were minor celebrities when we returned home and shared the front page of our local newspaper with HM the Queen, who happened to be visiting the province when we got home.
We dined out on that story for quite some time. 😂
That's scary, but I bet you will never forget that trip! Glad you made it back safely!

Maybe it goes without saying but the success of a tomato salad comes from great tomatoes. Homegrown sun ripened beefsteak tomatoes are excellent. The little hard pink winter things are unworthy. We won't have local tomatoes until July.
