I ran a half marathon! Not a race, but the course of a race that was supposed to have been in April and has been postponed to July, but they had marked the course and were allowing people to do it virtually. I was never signed up for this race, but a friend was and she asked a couple of us if we wanted to run the course with her today. I debated because I haven't run the distance since November or December. But ultimately I couldn't pass up a chance to chat with some friends and run in a new location - on what turned out to be a gorgeous day. It was 59 degrees when we started and I was feeling pretty chilly in my shorts and tank. I knew I would soon warm up but I really wanted to wear my long sleeves.
The course was nice - just outside the suburbs on some country roads through mostly farmland. There were some hills but not terrible. Although I prematurely and incorrectly declared one hill to be probably the last and the worst (based on no knowledge just a feeling I had that we had to be on the downhill for the rest).
We certainly didn't race this, but kept a good steady pace. I finished in 2:28 (with one stop of the watch in the middle when we made a water stop), which if it were a race would be ranked something like 10th out of 15 in my personal HM race times. Mile 3 was the fastest and mile 9 was the slowest (the aforementioned hill), which is pretty typical of how HM tend to go for me. When we got to the finish, the race director and a couple of people had actually set up a table and were giving out the swag for the people who had signed up for it, and they had some water bottles they let the rest of us take too. They even cheered a little and had a cowbell! It felt *almost* like a real race day. The swag was nice - a really nice hoodie and a great medal. I was a little jealous and sad I hadn't signed up for this. My friend who did intends to run the race if they hold it in July so this was a practice for her, but she got her swag anyway.
So that puts me at my **highest mileage month EVER!** September 2018 was my previous high total - 180.6 miles - which was the month before my marathon. I certainly did not see going higher than that this month, or really ever again. I'll do a short run tomorrow to keep my streak going, but it won't add much to the total.
I don't really have a training plan right now so I don't know where I'll go from here, but I'll wander over to the June thread soon and deliberate some goals.

@Camaramandy648 You and your son are in my thoughts.
Got a text from my mom this morning asking if I was okay (I'm in a neighborhood close to civil unrest) because she hadn't seen my run on Strava yet. Had to let her know I was fine, I just slept a bit later than usual. That's what you get for having a run streak. We are geographically very close to all the tumult, but it also feels far away since I haven't seen anything but helicopters and graffiti. They have boarded up all the buildings in my area, including the bottom floor of my apartment building, but I don't think it's going to get this far unless things get really crazy tonight. Fortunately, we're buttoned up with nowhere to be (until tomorrow's run, which I'd better get to early enough to reassure my mom).

I understand some of the fancier features getting moved, but I really didn't think this counted as "premium"-style content. Oh well!
In case someone else has this problem, there's a workaround I read somewhere else: Strava allows you to keep track of bike part mileage separate from the bike in total. So now I edit my bike to add a fake component with installation date May 1st. I can now see that 123 km my "rear wheel" of brand "monthly distance" has been used for 123 km. So I can figure out that of the 269 total km, 146km are running.
Unfortunately, that doesn't work anymore if you add hiking, skiing or any other distance-activity...

@PastorVincent I love my Plantronics Backbeat Fit headphones too! I didn't know they had changed anything. Fortunately, I bought a second pair more than a year ago, when I had a coupon for a shop that had them on sale, "just in case". Surprisingly enough, the first pair is still alive - after long heavy rain runs of up to 3 hours. I also had them in the washing mashine once - fortunately, only for a 15-minute-express cycle. The only thing I killed in the washing mashine years ago was a Garmin Vivofit...
@ContraryMaryMary Kudos on the training success! Faster and at a lower heart rate, that's great
@Camaramandy648 Your test experience sounds horrible! And I completely understand that it's impossible to stay away from him. I wish both of you all the best *hugs*
@shanaber The difference between walking vs running distance might be due to different smoothing algorithms? I know Strava does some smoothing to compensate for "jumpy" GPS tracks and remove outlier GPS points. If you have lots of sharp curves maybe it makes a difference?
Or it depends on the device you're using to track the activity? I know that my watch has a different sampling frequency for cycling and hiking, for example - less frequent measurements for hiking to save battery, which is enough since you're moving slower. Although then I would imagine the walking distance to be longer, because there should be more datapoints at corners and therefor more exact measurements... Weird
@mari_moulin Great job on hitting your goal, well done!
@katharmonic Great running! Both the monthly distance record and the half marathon.
--
146.5 km running distance for me. Smashed my 125 km goal Tomorrow is a rest day, so this is it for May. I also managed to hit my cycling distance goal of 100km (I know, serious cyclists do this in a single ride , but still better than my 0km in April), so I'm happy with my training log this month.

@katharmonic Great job on your HM run and the excellent total for the month! You rock!
@janejellyroll I was thinking about you this morning. I'm glad you aren't in the midst of the unrest.
@_nikkiwolf_ Yeah for smashing your goal! Great month!1 -
@rheddmobile - so glad you found a pretty place to run to get you out of your funk. Hope your knee is feeling better.
@katharmonic - what a fun way to run a 'virtual' HM! Getting swag at the end makes it even better! Also congrats for your biggest running month ever!
@janejellyroll - stay safe!
@_nikkiwolf_ - I think you could track your running miles separately in Strava in a similar manner as your bike part, assuming you don't already use it to track miles on your shoes. You could set up a 'shoe' for the month and select it for each run and then it would have the total for your running miles each month. Great job hitting and exceeding your goals for the month!
@mari_moulin - Yay!! Congratulations!
Last run of the month for me and it ended up being mostly walking with bits of running thrown in. I just wasn't feeling up to running today so I just enjoyed being out along the river with Hobbes and watching all the birds. Tomorrow is cross training for me with the stretch and roll class and my own strength training workout. See everyone over on the June thread!

But after posting my comment above, it suddenly dawned on me that there might be another option: the Tomtom website. My GPS watch is a Tomtom and syncs to their Mysports in addition to Strava. I didn't find that site very useful, but since I couldn't figure out how to deactivate the sync, I just ignore it. I checked just now, and it turns out they have a "progress" tab where you can see stats filtered by day/month/week/year and activity type.
It's not 100% accurate for me, since I sometimes forget my watch and use Strava for tracking. But I will try harder to remember charging and using the watch for all runs, now that I know it saves me 5$/month

Got three more miles in this evening! Brings me to 39 miles out of 40! Going to get up tomorrow and finish my goal!😁. Have a great evening all!6

@Faebert Way to crush you monthly goal! Awesome!1

Today's exercise is brought to you by the SpaceX launch, NCIS New Orleans, and stress.Dad decided he would let me take him to the VA ER this morning to get checked out. The ER doctor did some tests: EKG, blood work, chest x-ray and maybe something else. He said that all came back good, but he wanted to keep him overnight for observation and so he can see a cardiologist because the symptoms sounded heart related. Also, his BP was very high when he got there and later found out they had a hard time getting it down...didn't get it under control until around 7pm. At one point it was 196/96. At 7 it was 128/70. So yeah for that.
Normally when he is in the hospital, mom and I stay with him. That gives me peace of mind because he doesn't hear well, but will act like he does, so doesn't always respond appropriately to questions. Of course, I wasn't allowed to even go past the Triage Room with him today. So had to just come on home when they admitted him. I didn't get home until almost 3pm.
I was supposed to do a 7 mile run today. That wasn't going to happen, but I needed to do something. So I went down to the basement for a mile walk and a 5K run. I watched the SpaceX launch and was excited to see it went well. It amazes me as to how they get that stage 1 booster to come back and land on a ship in the ocean. After that was over, I turned the TV to NCIS New Orleans.
Stress explained in the spoiler.Dad called me about 5pm to let me know that they had come in and asked him if his heart stopped did he want them to do CPR or not. He had told them no and wanted to know what I thought about that. And he was crying. I told him I knew that he didn't want to be on machines, but I would have probably told them yes to CPR, but if that didn't work, then he was done. No machines. But, I told him it was his decision. Not mine to make. Boy. Talk about a hard phone call! I just had to get out and get some fresh air. I checked and only needed 1.5 miles to meet my goal, so I went for a nice, fast walk with Tippy into the neighbor's pasture and finished with laps on my driveway. I discovered that it is hard to walk fast, pray, and cry at the same time. But I managed and felt some better after.
Altogether, I ran 3.1 miles and walked 2.5 miles. I actually did my math correctly, and made my 80 mile goal for the month. Not planning on doing anything tomorrow, but you never know. I may need it.

Huge hugs! I hope he is better after a night's stay. As for the hard question, it is so incredibly hard. It's the kind of conversation you need to have with loved ones when it's not life and death. I had that conversation with my In laws a couple of months ago, after my FIL spent a week in hospital. They were both emphatic, DNR. I completely understand and accept their wishes, and if I'm ever there when anything happens, as a heal are worker, I'll find it hard to stand back and let them go, but knowing its what they want will make it easier.

So day 2 ofy no running week. Calf is back to niggly. Parts of the muscle feel bruised, maybe I over did it with the squash ball. It felt slightly swollen as well! So I've taken some ibuprofen to help with the inflammation, and am sticking to walking and other activities.
This week I'm working shift aga, meaning I don't start work till 3pm. Usually I love the opportunity to go for great longer runs, but I will behave. How does swimming and cycling sound instead! Figured I'll boost my cross training.
So today I walked 6.5k, did some strength training, and cycled 5k around a velodrome /bike park with the kids. I absolutely loved the velodrome! Thinking I might go out each day and do a good bike ride, followed by a swim since I'm not running.
This week might be a really good reset for me.
Oh and the glutes are gonna be sore tomorrow!7 -

Geez @quilteryoyo hugs! I was with my mom when she signed my dad’s dnr and it sucked. It sounds like they were pressuring your dad at a time of stress, not cool! That is one major reason this whole not letting family be with someone in the hospital is a problem, a sick person needs an advocate who cares. My dad told me no machines too, but I am glad that cpr was allowed because when his heart valve blew he lived 8 good years after that, perfectly able. Just make sure he understands his options, it’s not between just letting him die when a defibrillator would easily give him his whole life back, and being stuck on a vent forever!2 -
Okay, I realize this is a minor concern when people are losing their lives and buildings are being set on fire, but as someone who was out at 11 pm running last night it concerns me that Nashville just down the road a piece now has a 10 pm curfew. I was watching our local protests live and they were peaceful. Praying for everyone involved. It’s too hot to be under martial law y’all. I remember the riots here when I was a child and not getting to play outside.4

Mega month for me this month, thanks to two 30km runs - one at the beginning of May and another today. Today's was faster by about 14 seconds per kilometre and only once went above my target heartrate, and that was up a massive hill. So, definitely improved fitness as well as being more comfortable with the route (the fear of getting lost was real first time round). Shattered now though, and have a few chaffed spots - it is cooler today and windy, so I was wearing a light jacket, but I think that just trapped the sweat and caused my bra and shorts to rub. Nothing major, fortunately, but the waistband of my shorts is in exactly the same place as the waistband on my jeans!
Anyhoo, see you next month!

@quilteryoyo, I'm glad your dad's blood pressure was stabilized. What tough conversations for him and for you. Hugs to you. Hope he will be home soon. Good job getting a run in and managing some stress.Praying that the June thread brings lots of news of health, wellness and peace along with all the awesome running. X
I will second this sentiment. I hope everyone has a good last day of May and that June will bring us all some much-needed peace and hope.4 -
@quilteryoyo I hope things with your dad go well. I know that was a tough convo.
@ContraryMaryMary Great job!
Four miles yesterday, bringing my total to 53/50 miles for the month. Hoping to get out in a bit for a couple more miles to finish up the month. It is getting so hot during the day that I am contemplating getting up to run before work from here forward. I’m really not feeling it though...
My gym does open up tomorrow, so maybe I can run on the indoor track a few evenings a week.4 -

Sunny and 50 degrees F today. Breeze kept changing direction so it could blow in my face. But it was a lot more pleasant than sweating at 70 degrees F.

@Avidkeo Thanks. We have had that conversation before and decided no long term machines, like the ventilator. When I talked to him, he said that was what he was trying to tell her, but he couldn't get it out right. That's why I hate not being able to be there. Also, mom said she thought he was upset because when they asked him that question that he assumed that meant they thought his heart WAS going to stop and wanted to know what to do. She assured him that that is a question they ask everyone and it is part of their job. So, I think that helped. He is doing well this morning. It's just hard to hear your dad cry and keep it together for him when you're a daddy's girl. Sorry you are having calf issues and aren't able to run. Biking and swimming sounds like a great alternative.
Thanks @rheddmobile . After I talked to him he talked to the nurse and they changed it to do CPR. I told him in the future if he isn't sure how to respond to something they ask, to tell them he wants to call me and talk to me first. He said he would. And yes, that's why not allowing a family member to be with them is hard. And, when I talked to him this morning, he was telling me what he had for breakfast and said he had a hard time getting the packets open - like the little syrup container. He has arthritis and I had completely forgotten how hard that is for him. In the past, when I was there, I'd just automatically open it all. I told him to ask the person who brings the tray to open them for him. He has a hard time asking for help, so not sure he'll do that. I really wish they would let one person stay with him. But, I understand and we will survive.
Great running @ContraryMaryMary ! Hope the chaffing heals quickly.
Thanks @Faebert, @katharmonic , and @marisap2010 . Also, congrats on crushing your goal @marisap2010 !7 -
@quilteryoyo sounds like a stressful day well managed. That’s a hard decision to make when the circumstance is real. Many hugs and prayers to you and your family, especially your dad.rheddmobile wrote: »Okay, I realize this is a minor concern when people are losing their lives and buildings are being set on fire, but as someone who was out at 11 pm running last night it concerns me that Nashville just down the road a piece now has a 10 pm curfew. I was watching our local protests live and they were peaceful. Praying for everyone involved. It’s too hot to be under martial law y’all. I remember the riots here when I was a child and not getting to play outside.
Dh told me about this and I just had a flash back to Rodney King, “can’t we all just get along”. I don’t know the details, right or wrong. Hopes and prayers that the voices make changes for the benefit for all of us.3 -

@quilteryoyo - I am so sorry about your dad. Has he and/or your mom given you the written permission to speak with his caregivers? I have it for our friend and was able to let the doctor know what she was unable to express for herself. She also doesn't like to ask for help so wouldn't tell them what she needed (like they gave her lotion and she couldn't open it) or that she couldn't hear or understand what the doctor was telling her. So I would basically explain all that to the nurse or doctor and they would put it in the chart.
We had mostly peaceful protests in a neighboring town here too. It is a largely immigrant community with many lovely small restaurants and shops. It also has a wonderful large arts district. People on Twitter were begging the protesters who turned to throwing rocks, bottles and setting off fireworks at the police to not destroy the small businesses. 😢 My first thought was that I doubt they are following Twitter ATM. @elise4270 - I also flashed back to Rodney King.1 -
