@Heather, France was not much better than UK in terms of COVID reaction.
@Machka i did talk to psychiatrist who prescribed it (told her i used it 2 days and results) and she's the one who said it wasn't worth it for me in regards to results. Maybe incorrectly, but what can you do?
@ChrissyChickie I got invisalign as an adult and it's not bad. I really recommend finding someone word of mouth and an orthodontists. All dentists can do invisalign after a very short training. I think you can find out online if they have done a certain amount of cases (less than 10 per year). It works best for straightening front teeth. Changing the overall arch is very iffy. for example if one has a major overbite it can be worked on a little but not totally like when young, (though some testimonies say the opposite). But straightening out the front teeth is rather quick and there is even a "short version" just for the front teeth. you have to wear a retainer sometimes (or inside wire) for life at night because teeth go back to snaggly little by little.
I didn't really like it but it was manageable, and i like the results. it was worth it for me.2 -
@Barbara, you win the prize for maximum number of spoilers in 1 post! 6 spoilers!1
-
I don't care what you all post ... your opinions/activities/experiences, whether I agree with them or not, give me an opportunity to learn more about who you are. Your posts are how I learn what constitutes your "contextual identities...." Part of the beauty of this thread is getting to know other women from all walks of life and all over the world who are also on a quest for good health. Part of the beauty of a computer, on the other hand, is scrolling quickly or using the ignore button ... lol!
Beth: My sentiments, too. I love the diversity of people I meet in this thread. With such an active group I mostly scan read anyway. And I must admit that a spoiler almost always attracts my attention, and sparks my curiosity. You find such interesting things in them.
I use spoilers when I do long and/or boring posts, or am having a rant. Loved your ironic use of them in your last paragraph. You have my sincere sympathy for the way thatC19is affecting your life and health.
Sadly, many of the foods I like are not in my best interests! Doesn’t always seem that way when the nasty nibbles bite. 🤦🏼♀️ 🍫 🍫 🍫6 -
Contextual identity: I could easily have doubled my list, but was conscious of the ‘....in a few words.’ 😂 (No false modesty in my makeup!!! 😂)
I think most of us don’t give ourselves credit for all our diverse abilities. It’s good for us to stop and focus on all the things we do without realising how awesome we actually are.
Keep on being your wonderful self!!!1 -
It seems like spoilers are used in many ways.
-many post cute personal photos and funny stories photos in spoilers, but others post photos in main post
Some post statistics, (calories, exercise, etc), but others put the statistics in main posts.
some put sensitive info in spoilers (heart wrenching stories) and others in main posts
Some put thoughts on covid in spoilers and others in main posts.
Some put rants and vents in spoilers and others in main posts....
Some cite their previous posts in spoilers and others in main posts...
I find covid just part of what we are experiencing. In a few years it'll be something else.
I get it that some (many?) people feel bored by some posts and disturbed by others and want help from the posters, in avoiding having to read the upsetting or boring.
It doesn't make any difference to me whether it's in spoilers or not. I figure most readers don't read all, skim and that most who do will read all will read most spoilers. i wonder if the spoiler feature doesn't make it more compelling : "oh something hidden, to discover!" I'm more of the mind that the poster can choose how to use the spoiler or not, (creative tool) but that point of view may not be shared by all.
I guess if it's become official collective rule it could appear in the DAY 1 first welcoming post.
Something like in this thread the rule is that we post all covid-related, x, y and z type posts in spoilers.
That way it's clear for all!
What do you think?0 -

Hello lovely ladies.
I was finally able to determine what has had Smokey so enthralled that he has not been sleeping with me for the past two weeks. We have a teenage raccoon visiting! He seems to like to hang out on top of the courtyard fence. I discovered him while meditating this morning. I would have loved to take a picture but when he realized I noticed him he scurried off.
Karen – Your mom sounded like she was a very wise woman.
Lanette – I came across another article regarding the starting of food plants via clippings. The article stated to start basil by clipping and sticking the cuttings in a glass of water until it roots and then transplanting it. I figured I would skip that step. If something will root in water it will also root in soil. The article also stated one can plant cherry tomatoes (ones that may be turning) right in to soil and start plants that way too. Since tomato season in SFL is over I am saving the article as a reminder. I will attempt when our growing season starts up again (November/December).
Allie – I liken Jean to the Shoemaker and his children. We usually know what’s best for others but not always our families when something falls under our specialty. It’s not always easy to see what is right in front of us. Enjoy your haircut! When I was finally able to get mine cut it made me feel so groomed! Happy birthday!
Pip – That is some beehive! It’s too bad you’re so far away. I have a friend who specializes in humane (beemane…lol) removal. He would come over for free!
Kate – Love the nature pictures from your walk.
Lisa – So sorry about the hacking. Geez, what is wrong with people. If they put that energy in to the good…….our world would be a better place.
Barbie – Oh, no. There is another woman in your life and her name is Alexa! As posted yesterday she can be the devil in a red dress. LOL.
Rebecca – Happy belated birthday. Great gift of health to yourself! Funny, I always look at the 5 years. For some reason in my mind it means I am closer to the 0 years.
Katla – Glad to hear your stress was relieved by your medical procedure news.
Michelle – You have to let me know how the Roomba works out. I keep thinking of getting one and feel it will be a great way to keep up with the cat hair and crumbs. It certainly isn’t a deep clean but I think it would make cleaning easier.
Beth – I cannot imagine having a completely physical job. The ones I loved best were those that were 50% physical and 50% desk. There were two positions I held and I found the 50/50 jobs were great for keeping in shape during work. I was a production expeditor for a rather large technology manufacturer and was a QA/Safety supervisor for a manufacturer of concrete roof tiles. Both very physical jobs, but only for 50% of the day. For my knees I do eat many anti-inflammatory foods. My favorite is pineapple which also helps with my sweet tooth.
Sue in WA – Would love to see your new do. It sounds like the same protocols are in place there as here. Except we have to have our temperatures taken at the door.
Amber – I buy plain yogurts and add my own fruit or a drizzle of honey. I purchase full fat as it is more satisfying, to me, than the non-fat versions.
Machka – I am woman. Enough said.
Kate – Happy anniversary!
First and foremost I love this group and the diversity of experience and feedback received. I love getting to know each and every one of you. It seems like I started a whirlwind of commentary with my question. Since we are only connected via our written word I do not have the social cues I would have if we were speaking over the phone and/or in person. Since this is a fitness/health site I felt I should ask the question because I am just as concerned with mental as well as physical health and want to be sure I kept my posts healthy for everyone. I appreciate all of the feedback.
Hugs to all and prayers for those in need.

I would imagine that, for most of us, once we started, the list would just keep growing! 😂1 -
Tuesday - Cold, rainy, windy day. Nice to be at home and not out waiting for a bus.
- Zoom meeting with my husband's brain injury peer group.
- Work.
- Brisk walk on the treadmill with Zwift.
- And now ... grocery shopping from the comfort of my chair and whatever's next on my list.
The Zoom meeting was interesting because they arranged to have a nutritionist talk about nutrition for the brain.
Brisk Walk:
Distance: 6.36km
Moving Time: 1:09:38
Elapsed Time: 1:10:33

2020 Goals
It is difficult to make goals because I'm not sure what's going to happen one day to the next. I plan, God laughs ... or something like that. The last couple years have been a lesson in patience and flexibility and giving up a lot of what I would like to do in the interests of what needs to be done.
However, I do have some goals I'd like to accomplish, if possible ...
How to Set SMART Goals for 2020
SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.
https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/smart-goal-setting
Interestingly, he talks about 7 significant areas ...
Financial Goals: Start saving for retirement, get out of debt, or use a monthly zero-based budget.
Spiritual Goals: Pick up a new devotional, start a daily journal, or plug in to a group at your church.
Fitness Goals: Hit the gym more often, take the stairs, and remember to eat your veggies.
Educational Goals: Go back to finish your degree, get your MBA, or read a good book every month.
Family Goals: Plan one-on-one dates with your kids, have a standing date night with your spouse, or make it a point to call your mom and dad on Sunday nights.
Career Goals: Work toward a promotion or raise, learn something new about your line of work, or polish up and send out resumés if you’re looking for a new career path.
Social Goals: Say yes when someone invites you out to lunch or a social gathering—or, for some of us, say no more often.
I've modified this slightly ...
Organisation/Financial Goals -- Getting our taxes done and other paperwork in order.
Spiritual Goals -- I'd like to start attending church a bit more regularly. I'll also include relaxation and recreation in here. Down time. I get very little of that at the moment and need more. For me that might be sleep and photography.
Fitness Goals -- Exercise, Eating, Sleeping -- Working up to running 5 km at least a couple times a month. Working up to cycling 50 km at least once a month.
Educational Goals -- Uni! I would like to finish my Master's degree in 2020.
Family/Medical Goals -- Husband -- Never-ending stream of medical appointments + projects with 2 or 3 different organisations. And me! A goal is to get me into healthy shape again!
Career Goals -- One of the main things my area is planning to work on is streamlining the processes a bit. Meanwhile I need to learn a lot more SQL and as much about what 2 different people I work/worked with did. I'm also on the board of two organisations now. Both interest me a lot, but I'm also hoping that taking on leadership roles might help advance my career a little.
Social Goals -- Cycling Club. I've made a detailed list of what I need to do, which helps.
-- My Personal Website -- I have started working on this. I'd post it here, but not sure if I can: machka . net This has a social aspect in that we go to Wordpress meetings now and then.

"My Love List" ... about getting affairs in order ...
http://ssandifer.com/MyLoveList2015.pdf
Also, from a USA perspective: https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/getting-your-affairs-order
And from an Australian perspective: https://www.agedcare101.com.au/aged-care/get-set/“putting-your-affairs-order” and https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/life-events-and-you/life-events/money-musts-before-you-die and https://yourlifeassist.com.au/information-assistance/put-your-affairs-in-order/
Just a little bit of background ... in March 2018 I was suddenly thrown into the position of not knowing if my husband was going to live or die when he had a workplace accident which resulted in a severe traumatic brain injury, and if he lived, not knowing whether he'd ever return to a place where he could recognise what was going on around him and be able to talk, make decisions, etc.
When I was with my first husband, I handled everything ... but I didn't mind a bit when my current husband handled everything. It was a break for me. Until all of a sudden I didn't know what bills needed to be paid, or how to pay them ... and I discovered I didn't have access to all the accounts ... and that if he died without a will, I could potentially lose half of our money to his previous family ...
I spent weeks digging through files on his computers and paper files, and going to banks, and ringing banks etc. etc. trying to put it all together.
I kept thinking ... "they never mention this on TV murder mystery shows when someone dies. Usually the surviving family appears mildly upset and then seems to carry on with their lives. They don't show the surviving wife weeping over a file box because she can't find information and is coming close to having the power turned off or losing the house because the rent isn't paid."
So, now that my husband can participate again (not 100% but better than expected), we are working on getting things in order. And I worry about what would happen to him if I passed away.
Make things easier on yourselves by ...
-- making sure all affairs are in order. 2 names on all accounts, enduring power of attorney, bills, wills, taxes, paperwork, whatever it takes.
-- making sure you're fit and healthy. Being fit and healthy improves the odds. Also could you actually support and lower your partner to the ground, should he/she collapse? Do you know first aid?
-- making sure your house well set up. Are there stairs? Tight corners? Difficult showers?
-- having a look at options around you. What would you do for groceries? What if you couldn't drive? If you have never used public transportation, try it now while you're still able. What about things like doctor's offices? Hospitals? All the stuff you use? Is it scattered around and difficult to get to or quite convenient?
--making sure you've got resources. Do you have people who can offer assistance? Knowledge of who to call if you've got problems with the house? Do you know about services in your area which can help?
Also some tips to spring clean your computer!

Yesterday: It was so warm that I couldn’t stick the heat in the garden mid afternoon. We had a surprise visit from BiL and SiL we haven’t seen them since lockdown started, so had a welcome catchup in the garden.
Today: It’s overcast and we have thunder and lightning warnings. DGD in Oxford says they had the thunderstorms late last night. It’s certainly feels humid enough. I’m glad Brenda and Trevor visited yesterday, and we were able to get caught up.
I have already done two jogging sessions this morning and am well ahead with my daily exercise. We were planning to meet up with our youngest daughter for a dog walk this evening, but the weather may knock that in the head.
We have almost finished our summer planters and are now doing an overhaul of the front garden. We had to remove a huge pieris which had become badly scarred by sooty mould because of a scale insect infestation. It took DH hours to dig out the roots. He had to take an axe to them in the end. We have planted up the space with a mixture of summer bedding and perennials.
It’s 11.24am and I still haven’t had my breakfast, and I need to sort out my shopping for tomorrow, so I will love you, and leave for now.
Take care! Stay safe! 💕💖💕

Good morning!
Pip - I wonder if that swarm will move on their own or is that a hollow tree of some type where they can set up housekeeping. What a thrill! Better than the bald faced hornets we have gotten here in past years that make the huge paper nests. I haven't seen any this year - they can be fierce to people but are so good in keeping other nasty insects at bay, so we normally just leave them alone unless they are too close for comfort.
SuziQ - OK, now I have to put Florida on my bucket list to get a feel for your growing season. Our tomatoes around here might be coming on by July if we get a good run of warmer weather. I bought a bunch of celery a month or so ago, intending to use some and then plant the cut end like Rita does. Well, that little bugger decided to hide in my crisper so when I ran across him, too late.
That reminds me, one of the nurseries in town has lemongrass plants - need to pick one up.
Do any of you remember the book "Following Atticus" by Tom Ryan that we talked about in this group a year or so ago? (Briefly - it's a memoir, Tom gets a little mini schnauzer - Atticus - and they take hikes up to many peaks in New Hampshire. I'm re-reading it.) Tom now has a blog if anyone is interested: Tomryan.substack.com. Atticus has since passed. Tom had many health problems - stroke, heart attack to name a few. So he has new dogs and is back walking and has completely changed his diet to vegan and is regaining his health. I really like his writing style.
Have a great day!

Morning, afternoon and evening, all...
Karma pooped on my head this morning, the immediate reaction after I got snarky about son's excuse for not coming down to help. My husband keeps our knives razor sharp, and I sliced off part of the pad on my middle finger, (of course!) while I was cleaning the cleaver. I wear gloves with most things I do outside anyway... but it's going to be interesting to see how much it stings when my hands start sweating on the elliptical!
I may have to name my next cat Karma, and then we'll have Karma and Egg. Don't know why that appeals to me, but it does.
Kate - Happy 55th anniversary a few days early!
Machka - hope it's not a kidney stone.
SuziQ - Your note regarding the Roomba made me realize something that's been rumbling around in my mind a lot lately. There has been more than one scientific study done that notes that the labor-saving appliances in this country have contributed to the obesity epidemic. These last three weeks, I've been hanging out the clothes on the line about every other day, and I know that has added to my activity levels. But we just got a dishwasher, after a year and a half without one, and I'm pretty darned fond of that thing. I watched my mama scrub clothes on a washboard, so that is NOT happening, I'll hold onto my washer, thank you. I also think of dragging the rugs out to the line and beating them with a flat paddle, as I did when I was a child, so I like my vacuum cleaner, too.
So in other words, while I can tip my hat to the concept that doing the housework the hard way is better for my body, I would still stand up and fight to keep quite a few conveniences (I'm not fond of Swiffer sweepers, though I do like the duster). So the question is out there for everyone that wants to answer... in terms of housework and domestic work in general, what's the one appliance you just can't live without?
Off to do the stretches... then elliptical, then a bit of rowing...
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR5 -
Thank you ladies for the Birthday wishes its not until the 30th .but that is good.
Barbie- when i set up my Alexa i locked it from recording my voice or recording anything .have Jake look that up so there are no personal conversations recorded..
Going to finish putting patio stuff out today5 -

I may have to name my next cat Karma, and then we'll have Karma and Egg. Don't know why that appeals to me, but it does.
Years and years ago I cut the pad almost entirely off my left index finger while making a salad. We didn't eat that salad ... and I've still got the scar. My fingerprint definitely changed! It also took ages for the feeling to come back to that part of my finger.
I hope yours heals quickly.
Karma and Egg does have a certain ring to it.
On a completely different topic ... but sort of vaguely related ... here in Tassie one of the bays not too far away is called Eggs and Bacon Bay ...Machka - hope it's not a kidney stone.
Me too. About a decade ago I had one large one surgically removed and I've had several small ones since. But I've been having flank pain, particularly on the left side.So the question is out there for everyone that wants to answer... in terms of housework and domestic work in general, what's the one appliance you just can't live without?
The dishwasher, I think. I didn't get my first dishwasher until 2013. We had just returned from our round the world trip and were house sitting for my supervisor ... and she had a dishwasher. I hadn't realised till then how wonderful they were! We don't use enough dishes to run ours every day ... probably every other day. But it's great to just load the thing and the kitchen looks clean.
I would also have to say vacuum is very important now as we currently have w-w carpeting throughout most of this house. Ideally, I'd have hardwood and the vacuum would be less important.
I have a washer which is pretty important too, however if it came to it I could use a laundromat. But I don't have a dryer ... I've hung my clothes for years.
A self-cleaning shower would be nice.

Thanks for the update and reminder. I loved that book. I'll go look for his blog.3 -
Another observation about controversial topics. Quite a few years ago, someone who is no longer posting, made some comments about having trouble with her health care insurance company. That part was fine, but then she continued with condemnation of the insurance industry in general and contempt for the current federal program about health care and the current administration and a few shots at health care professionals. That took her personal frustration into a hugely controversial rant.
Another example. If teenagers in your neighborhood are playing their music too loud and scaring your dog, we can all be sympathetic and offer solution, but if that turns into complaints about teenagers in general and parenting, then it doesn't belong on this thread.
On another subject, I read a great anecdote about a woman who hired someone to do her housework so she could go to the gym, then drove to the gym where she had her car valet parked.

Kate UK: Happy 55th Anniversary! We had our 50th Anniversary in March this year. We had Thai food for our anniversary dinner. We had many plans for a family celebration that were prevented by the Covid 19 epidemic. We’ll celebrate later. :ohwell:
SuziQ: I am not a raccoon fan. This winter a very thin and sick looking raccoon tried to get into our complex and was stopped by a gate, thank goodness. I called the sheriff’s office to get the animal removed. I suspect it was rabid. A few years ago we had a raccoon invasion under our house. It was horrible. They tore apart our furnace vents and insulation. We had to have all of the insulation replaced and all of the raccoon poop removed. It was winter time and we had no heat other than our fireplace and an electric fake woodstove in our bedroom. It seems I’m still holding a grudge. :grumble: :ohwell:
Machka: We’ve had Zoom chats with our daughter and her family. What a blessing!!! It is a great idea for your DH’s brain injury peer group.
Grocery stores have been open here all along, but shops are just getting there. I found out that my gym is now open again. The classes I care about are yoga classes. They’ll be offered on Monday evenings and Friday mornings. We used to have yoga three days a week plus an evening. Perhaps it will get back to that eventually. I am grateful that I’ll get the chance to go twice a week.

Hello newcomers join on in !
Finally budged my calories a little more 1lb away from the big 60lb loss!
Yesterday went over by 500calorie to budge it today got to watch my budget stay in my 1200cal limit to hold on to it!
Yesterday McDonald’s chicken type burger 🍔 but was fried with fries 🍟 medium amount.Diet Pepsi y Crystal light teas. Pizza 🍕. A popsicle brand sugarfree fudge pop 40cal. Think some lays potato chip dust broken pieces at the bottom of a bag with a spoon 🥄. My usual heavy exercising even ran in the heat outside playing soccer ⚽️ with JR to walked 3miles to sit-ups etc etc even house work 🧹 🧽 🧺 .
Today
Corn 🌽 on cob 1/2 drizzled not smothered in garlic butter.
Soup a low cal recipe:
( carrots 🥕,onion,tomatoes,green beans,chicken stock ,y 2 cans of great value chicken y dumplings 🥟 160cal one makes 6servings)
2 slices pizza 🍕
Diet Coke y crystal light tea
Lettuce with fried onion on top Walden dressing
40cal popsicle brand Sugarfree fudge pop
Heavy exercising
Unless something changes that’s the plan but hubby comes home more with the virus he may walk in with dinner never know it gots us all messed up (who knows when he does this found out JRs asking him when mommy out of earshot/or Daddy using JR as a diet escape goat 🐐 so blaming the “Emilio’s “ in the house 🏡). A 3yr old can change your diet plans he may want my pizza 🍕 I’ll have to pick everything off but the cheese 🧀 give it to him. Will see
Bought my Dad 2 $3 books off eBay sending to his house from a older bookstore online . Supporting a small town book shop in other words. Owner says they stock the books 📚 in a back area in boxes marked eBay so they don’t accidentally sell them. Usually books they have no way to display with the virus even harder to get customers in their store. I bought 2 books from them for JR last week.
Hubby I got to remember to find a picture for his Father’s Day picture frame I already gave him early.

I was getting all kinds of crazy numbers, finally decided to put a fresh battery in the scale and came up with the same number 3 times in a row, so guess I have to accept that that's the right number!
Barbie, thank you for the comments about what is and isn't acceptable (rant about teenagers next door turning into rant about teens in general) I totally agree. It's should be fine to talk about a particular thing that happened to you or yours, but not fair to lump all people of a certain kind into one large group. After all, there are idiots of all races, creeds, colors and ages! lol
I also have to agree with the post that stated that putting something in a spoiler made it more interesting! I too am curious about what's hidden! lol
I have gone for a walk this morning already, felt good! It's a walk that hubby and I have done numerous times, usually takes us and hour. Today, only took me 42 min. Apparently I walk faster than hubby! I already knew that, he's asked me to slow down a few times, his heart just isn't up to the same speed that mine is. These days he's doing more on his exercise bike downstairs, he goes at a slower pace, but will ride for a couple of hours while watching tv. He's hooked his computer up to the tv and has Amazon Prime so will find something on there and away he goes.
Anyway, must go for now, have to leave for my volunteer thing soon! Hope everyone has a great day!
