WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR SEPTEMBER 2020

Margaret I also think that finding out on FB is better than not knowing. I have many old friends with whom I keep in touch on FB. I wouldn't necessarily be on their contact list, but we all know what is going on in each other's lives. I think asking them when it suits them or when they are ready for visits etc is an excellent idea.

Heather,
We have no government rules here, either, but we have chosen to isolate for safety. The only people who have come into our house are the regular friend who walks the dogs and we distance from her, and the cable TV repairman who kept his distance and wore a mask. We have been in no one else's home. We go to three stores to shop for essentials and to essential medical appointments. I think you are wise. I know many others in our age group who have similar guidelines including distancing from grandchildren.
Hi Marg,
You have found a perfect community for support, encouragement, and friendship. Glad you have found a solution to your concern about living alone. So sorry about the loss of your husband.
I plan to dance this morning. I have the music ready and a list of favorites planned. The room where I dance shares space with Bernie's litter box, so I swept and mopped at bedtime so the floor will be good for dancing. Later I'll ride my exercise bike and continue knitting the blanket I'm making for Project Linus. This one is pink and red.

(((Lisa))): May Awful Tuesday leave your life and become Terrific Tuesday in the future. :flowerforyou:
Pip: Arrange and rearrange if you’ve got the energy and are having fun with your new home. You’ll eventually find the layout you like the best or decide that rearranging now and then is fun.
It has been a long day, and I’ve had many errands to run. I’m ready for rest. I hope tomorrow is an excellent day for us all.

I used to rearrange my furniture in other apartments I used to live in back in the day. I was like being in a new apartment without moving. It’s Funyuns, the feel and colors of the furniture would b totally different if I didn’t have a black dog. It dictates the colors I used because of his shedding and all the hairs. Everything would b light colors, not so dark. Kinda like farm style and shabby chic2 -
Barbie: Although we have government restrictions, they have been somewhat relaxed. However, like yourselves and Heather we have chosen to isolate, and have had only socially distanced contact with others. We use one large centre which has an early seniors’ hour, and our local smaller centre. Both centres have strict social distancing rules in place, but we wear masks indoors. It’s seem the sensible thing to do at our age. (Both 74). We have no intention of changing that until we feel safe, and have a healthy cynicism about the efforts to ‘open up’ again.
I also plan to have a wee dance later. I try and find time to do that most days. I have a playlist of videos to which I like boggie.
Pip: Your comment about moving furniture took me back to our early married life. DH never knew where the furniture would be when he came home as I had a habit of frequently rearranging it.

Marg: Welcome to a great group of supportive women. Post often and get to know us. I am so sorry to hear that your DH passed away unexpectedly in November 2017. It sounds as though living with your sister is good for both of you. Where are you located? We have many friends from around the world, USA, CAN, GB, Tasmania . . . :flowerforyou:
Barbara: I hope things are going well for you and Joe.
Lisa: Have a good day fueling up your car, running errands & shopping. :flowerforyou:
We have only left our county once since the pandemic began, and that was for my colonoscopy several months ago. DH has some medical appointments in another county & that will make our second trip out of county. Ours has had a few confirmed CoVid 19 cases and one death. We’ve been doing much better than many other places in our state. DH has some upcoming medical appointments that are likely to take us into counties with more CoVid related deaths. It worries me.

Hi ladies. I've been having trouble getting to these forums with my phone lately.
I have a second date with Steven on Wednesday. We are meeting at the beach.i hope it won't be crowded. Normally the kids would be back in school, but this year is so crazy.
He asked me my comfort level with touching in the days of Covid. How bizarre to pre-negotiate a simple kiss! We both have been really careful, so it's a risk I'm willing to take. But I'm nervous about it. Maybe we should disinfect our mouths with a shot of whiskey first!
So I guess I have to try on the old bathing suit. So not looking forward to that part.

Annie Just my opinion but forget the old bathing suit. Get a new one that works with your current look. Some of the skirted ones are so flattering and paired with a tankini top look amazing. I think a two-piece is liked by guys unless you wear one of those one-pieces that cover nothing. A two-piece can be shorts and a tank top made from nylon/spandex and look stunning. If you know his favorite colors, then that always helps. Most guys don't like busy patterns. The only patterns I had that the guys liked was the one with fish skeletons on it. I loved that old tankini/shorts suit. The other was the pirate skull and crossbones. Anyway, good luck and just be yourself. I am not sure disinfecting your mouth would help if one or the other has COVID. It sounds like a fun date! Sending good energy for a wonderful date and a long-lasting relationship if he is the one.2 -
A study in black and white acrylic on hard cardboard of my Great Great Grandmother, nickname "Deadeye." All of us women from her have one weak eye and it stays closed more than the other. She was a great shot, but she got her name because she could read people very accurately. She was also a smoke signaler as a girl and could read other signals in an uncanny way. I used an old faded browned photo of her to create this painting. I haven't painted in a couple of years and had to do this one with my left eye squinted due to it not focusing if used with the right. Having one eye almost closed just seemed right for painting this look into my ancestor.

Husband's birthday was quiet, but nice. We are having leftover lasagna tonight.
Its in the 40/50's at night, so I got out the throw blankets for the bed. Summer is officially over. It was about 1 week long here.
Hugs to y'all!

I loved Longmire and like Yellowstone. I grew up on a mountain ranch next to an Indian reservation and never remember any problems, but shows have to have a storyline. My favorite in Longmire was Lou Diamond and his continual soiree. I hadn't heard that word in years. My dads side of the family was French and French Canadian and they never said birthday party it was always Faye's Birthday Soiree. I never really looked up the meaning until I watched Longmire and I can say my dad was being sarcastic because my birthday parties were boring and I still had to do chores.
Faye, my eldest sister lives in Great Lakes Montana. I took a 19 hour train ride last September, and being from lil' ol' Whidbey island, I was a bit starstruck by its BIG SKY! I felt so out of my element! When I drove her big truck to a neighbor's one homestead over, I used a turn signal as I turned from sisters long driveway. She about died laughing on THAT one! I was like what? You have to inform people when you're turning! She looks around, Who? It snowed so I just let her dress me, for I had no snow apparel. Watching Longmire, and Yellowstone helps me understand the people she has to deal with. I talk with everyone, and she told me to hush up a couple of times. As it was, the lady that worked at the book sale at the library called her a week later to buy one of her paintings. She paints glorious birds on vintage sheet music. They had some sheet music at the book sale.👍. I had showed the lady her work, and her and a friend had purchased some. It was my "see it helps to be outgoing" moment.😁

How interesting! I lived in Montana in the 70's for a couple of years. Is Great Lakes near Great Falls? I love Montana but it is just too cold for me. I was back there in 2014 to visit a friend and do a guitar workshop. Sometime about 1995 I took a vacation for two weeks and traveled the entire state and went up into Alberta. It is so vast and such a diverse and interesting landscape.
Your sisters art sounds so interesting. I would love to see some of it. I love art and decided to do a black and white study of my American Indian GG Grandma. Not sure I can bring it around to what I want. I spent 3 hours in it today and think I have lost my touch. My bad eyesight doesn't help either. Songs birds on sheet music. that is so cool and would fit in so many places properly framed.

Oopsy, I meant Great Falls!😁. Here is an unframed recent one, and an older framed one. She is a talented sort!

the pictures are so AMAZING!! Thank you for sharing3 -
Jake decided to rearrange the furniture in the living room yesterday so he could make more use of the recliner. He found a good arrangement that he likes and still allows me to watch TV either from my chair at the dining room table or my exercise bike. He is happy and I'm not inconvenienced by it. Our furniture is heavy so trying out new arrangements isn't easy.
Annie,
Enjoy your date and don't slip into self consciousness about your bathing suit. If the man is worth anything, he'll be more interested in your qualities as a person.

I pulled out the bean pants and they’re on their way to becoming compost elsewhere. That is the good news. The bad news is that we still have the tiny ants outside on our windows trying to get hummingbird food. At least they are not in the house again, so far. I spray them with poison, but they don’t seem to disappear. I also have bait traps under the windows. AAARRRGGGHHH! :grumble: I wonder whether we’ll have any cold weather this winter.

Kirby likes this way or the original way

Pip Who did that pencil drawing on the wall? I love that kind of art.0

PIP ~ Go back to the original way! Loved the chest in front of the window.3
-
Pip - I like the new way. You can both easily watch the TV. Plus I like the placing of the chest. More interesting.
Do you like the TV so high on the wall? I personally prefer it at eye level, but I know a lot of people have it up there.
Visit to the grandkids was a real boost. Edie was being a total madam and it was all crazy, but we came away feeling terrific. Just adore them.
DH checking the quizzes with Edie .

Max on the climbing frame. New haircut for school next week.
Bea doing something.
I pity the poor new au pair. Edie was not a joy. Dana looked a bit overwhelmed.

NEED ADVISE My bestie has decided to try once again to lose weight after her visit to the heart doc. She wants a folding treadmill suitable for walking. She has one knee replaced and is over by 80-100 lbs. I used to keep her thinner with biking and walking, but neither she nor I can bike and she cannot walk far because of lung damage from last year having double pneumonia. She also cannot stand the heat or much cold, so indoors it is for her. She refuses to do my leg lifts or my sashay walk. "After all what does a skinny butt broad know about weight loss?" Her words! She has had 20 different walking exercise machines and she wants something small and foldable that doesn't take up much room. We are headed out to look at one local sports store. Any and all input is appreciated. Stair steppers bother her fake knee, so they are out. She asked my advice and I told her I know nothing as I don't and never have used machines except in physical therapy, however, I do know some ladies that are a gold mine of info on walking machines for weight loss.2

Edie gave us a waist level hug. I think she is finding it all a bit hard. Plus the new au pair. She is very sensitive.

Thanks Pip It looks like watercolor and I love that style. I have done that style using acrylic wash.1

I've been using a kettleball on the ground lately. I just pick up my foot and touch my toes to it, then the other foot. It's a really gentle way to start, depending on how fast you go. You could use a paint can, or anything that won't go flying if you kick it a little. Then to increase the challenge, touch a little higher or faster.

Heather: Our TV is above the fireplace mantle. We can see the fire and watch favorite shows at the same time. We consider it a win/win. I love the photo of your DH and Edie. It is heart-warming.
Faye: If your friend wants a treadmill, she should be sure that it has a grab bar at the front or on each side. Hopefully it will help protect her from falls.
I’ve shopped already and don’t want to go out again any time soon. I would like to walk the dog in our neighborhood or ride my terra-tryke on its trainer in the garage. I can ride for as long as I want and read a book at the same time. Win-win. We decided to bring one of them inside in the past. It took up way too much space in the living room. The garage is a good place to ride.

Walked on the treadmill today. The plan for tomorrow is to do a Kari Anderson Center Floor (this is pilates) DVD
You know, I was looking for a Medicare provider who had a supplement (NOT Advantage) that included Silver Sneakers since I can use SS at any of the gyms I went to. Now I’m thinking that one of the gyms I probably won’t go back to. I was never impressed with their cleanliness. If they weren’t real clean before all this, do I REALLY think they will suddenly be super clean? I think not. Same for the Y. I didn’t like touching the floor. But the one gym I have been going to was ultra-clean before all this so I expected it to continue and it is. The only thing is when we go to FL. But last year the Silver & Fit told me that they can transfer my S&F to another gym. But I wonder how many times you can transfer your membership? I’ll have to find that out.
Rebecca – those are lovely lovely pics. I bet they would make a nice gift for newlyweds, the sheet music of “their” song with a picture
Sourdough starter update: still no activity, ordered it from King Arthur yesterday. I’m really looking forward to it getting here. I’m just getting so frustrated. I called them yesterday because I couldn’t find anywhere it told you the directions. Since I had to go to the store, if I needed anything specific (like a certain type of flour), I’d get it; but they said I only needed unbleached AP flour, which I have.
Marg – welcome back! I’m so very sorry about your husband
Stopped at Lynette’s. She was saying that Ken is depressed. Unfortunately, we knew that already. So I invited them here Sunday for dinner. We’ll just have hamburgers, maybe coleslaw, chips. She asked to bring something (first time ever!) so I suggested a fruit salad. I’ll make one of the chocolate pies. Last time I didn’t realize it but all I had was instant chocolate pudding. The instant is more “runny” so this time I’ll use the cook & serve.
Can hardly wait for 2 weeks from now when, hopefully, we can go see PJ. He’s walking now! I saw a little girl at the gym today and it pained me to realize how much I’ve missed. But I also know that I have no desire whatsoever to move back north
After seeing Lynette, went to the soup kitchen, then WalMart to get a prescription then Vince and I went to another pharmacy for a prescription for Lexi.
Anne DE – how wonderful that you’re having that date! Have a great time. You can ask Steve right before the kiss if he’d feel more comfortable if you’d disinfect with a drink….lol Bet he'd get a kick out of that!
Faye – what a lovely picture! You are so talented
Barbie – I remember when the kids were little and wanted to rearrange their rooms, Vince wouldn’t do anything until they had measured. Being kids, of course they didn’t. Can you make cutouts of your furniture to scale and see how things will fit into the room. Sometimes we think something will fit but then realize it really wouldn’t because of a door opening, etc.
Faye – I checked on uTube and saw some videos that might help your friend. It’s the Sit and be Fit. Maybe she can check this out. That’s a lot of what I used to have my seniors do. What about a mini-trampoline? I know they make them with the grab bar.

Yardwork - brush cutting today - 121 minutes/711 cals
Here's what I'm talking about when I say brush cutting - that boxwood in the center is about 25-30 feet tall - all the brush on the ground is branches or trash trees that have grown up in the little grove, and I spent two hours chainsawing or using pruners to get all of that out of there that's now on the ground.
This is the eventual aim for the big boxwood above - this is the meadow just downslope of our little eight-tree orchard. We're keeping scattered stands of boxwood, trimming them up to my head height, both to get them healthier and to make mowing easier. Since you can't kill boxwood with a hammer around here, and it becomes a lovely shade tree if you work with it a little, we gave in to the inevitable and just started making them look like we want them.
