Happy Birthday @martaindale!!!
I met three friends at 6 am this morning. Our training plan for the MCM virtual had us doing 18 miles today so 18 miles we did. The temperature and the humidity dropped overnight and so the weather was great. Overall it was a good run but I’ve been zapped of energy ever since. Would love a nap but I had to do a grocery run for my parents and Visit them for a while. But really 2:30 isn’t too late for an afternoon nap is it? See ya!7 -

My pet peeve is the bike path. They are clearly marked with bicycle symbols, are usually a different color, and there is nearly always a sidewalk RIGHT next to them (frequently the sidewalk is marked for pedestrians as well). But where do people walk, stand, let their kids play, slowly push baby carriages, walk dogs with leashes stretching the whole way across? You guessed it.
I’m guilty of sometimes running in the bike lane next to the sidewalk. My excuse is that our sidewalk is badly broken and dangerous to run on. Funny how the bike lane never has six inches of broken concrete sticking straight up with a rebar spike coming out! And I do try to listen for bikes and get out of their way.
Most of the actual trails around here are multi-use with posted signs saying that cyclists must yield to pedestrians. This literally has never happened in the history of ever and I don’t see it ever happening - the fast cyclist clearly expects the slow pedestrian to move aside for them. It’s helpful when a cyclist uses his bell though since a bike can be pretty sneaky! I wish it were the law that all bikes have to have a bell and use it when approaching pedestrians. The best cyclists not only use a bell but call out what side they intend to pass on, and the number in their group.
Here if it isn't marked, technically bikes aren't allowed on the sidewalks UNLESS you are riding with a child, and then I am constantly reminding my kids (loud enough that the people in question can hear me) that pedestrians have the right of way there. I treat multi-use trails the same way, not sure what the rule is though. People may have headphones in or just not hear you coming. And on the roads where there isn't a bike lane, I wear a dorky bright yellow reflective safety vest (or a backpack made out of the same material, basically a big square of hi-vis fabric on my back) because people act like they WANT to run me over. But when I'm on a dedicated bike lane with a sidewalk right next to it, you'd think people would leave you to it. Today I even saw one of those silly motorized scooter things that people rent using a phone app, and then leave in random places all over the city... left in the very middle of a bike lane. Several yards away was a painted rectangle designated parking for the stupid things. And if you try to move them, an alarm goes off. Looked like some cyclists threw it off the side of the path later on.
Oops. I'm ranting! Sorry!
The trail I run on is a paved mix use trail with 2 lane, so for walkers, runners and cyclists. No motorized vehicles (electric bikes and scooters included) but some people do ride them occasionally there and have gotten caught. Pedestrians also have the right of way. Typically when I run with Hobbes the Vizsla I run on the left against path traffic as I was told that is the appropriate way to run on a marked path with a pup. It has the advantage to allow faster runners and cyclists to go by me without worrying that Hobbes will hear them and turn to look (or just wander out a bit from my side) and get hit by someone passing me on the left. I can also usually see what is coming towards me with enough time to move. When I run on the major street to get to the trail I also run in the parking lane or the bike lane also against traffic instead of on the sidewalk for the same reason as @rheddmobile, the sidewalks are just too uneven and dangerous. There is plenty of room though to move out of the way if a cyclist is coming towards me.
@hamsterwheel6 - I will send you a friend request and then I will message you the link that @rheddmobile sent me unless you have already gotten set up on challenge hound.
@martaindale - Happy Birthday!!
Glad to see some of you are getting cooler weather! We are supposed to hit 114F today and hotter tomorrow. I guess that will make the mid 90's next week feel cool right?
No running for me until at least Monday but will get in a strength or pilates workout this afternoon.6 -
@Scott6255 Sorry you are struggling, but you are awesome for getting out there and getting it done. We are having a few days of better weather - lower humidity and low temps in the upper 50's to low 60's. It probably won't last long, but I am enjoying it while I can. I'm so ready for fall.
Happy Birthday @martaindale ! It's great that you are setting such a good example for your daughter!
@polskagirl01 Feel free to rant. I'm glad other bikers threw the offending transportation off of the path.
@Teresa502 Wow. That's a long run. Glad you got it done. Yeah, the cooler, less humid weather felt great this morning. And, no, 2;30 isn't too late for an afternoon nap - it is still afternoon, isn't it?

Happy Birthday @martaindale !
@shanaber yes I’ve already signed up. I’ll send you the link for my challenge and you can join that . I think that’s how it works!1 -
@martaindale Happy Birthday!
I ran my Mental Health 10k this morning. Started a little later than I planned because my mom called in the middle of the night about my dad going back in the hospital, so I didn’t sleep well. My pace was on par with my typical 10k pace, despite the heat and humidity, so I was ok with that.
I have no idea why this photo is posting sideways...😳

No run, did 60 min endurance spin class. Am really enjoying it!6

Shoot. Had my post all typed up, but lost it. Hate it when that happens.
I got up a little bit early this morning to do my run. The weather was predicted to be much better, so I wasn't really motivated to get up super early. The weather was so much nicer at 64°F and 83% humidity. I just did 3 miles at an easy pace today. Physically, it was easy, but I struggled during mile 3 mentally, so did Fartleks, just to get it done quicker. Struggling at mile 3? No wonder I REALLY struggle with anything over 6 miles! Need to figure that out. My pace was 30 sec to a minute faster than my easy pace has been this summer. I'm crediting the better weather for that.
Also 3/20 walking.6 -
@marisap2010 Great job on getting your 10K done. I hope your dad is doing okay.
Oh, I got my Scooby Doo swag in the mail today!

Boston week CHALLENGE RUN for @PastorVincent update!
Everyone’s team page should have a map now, and the leaderboard has a map. So as you do your miles it will display your progress as if you were running the Boston Marathon course.
There’s still two days before the start of the challenge, so please feel free to join. We’re doing 26 miles at any time during the week of Sept 7 - 14 in memory of @PastorVincent. Friend then message me for your challenge link. If you aren’t up to completing 26 miles in a week, post here and we can see who wants to team up.
For the people who have already signed up! Once you have joined a challenge, can you please message me with the link you used to join (just reply to the message I sent you if you are solo, if you are on a team please send the team link) and let me know what you would like your team name to be on the leaderboard, whether you want your usernames from here, your real name, or a unique team name. I didn’t realize that I needed to be editing the team names as people joined! Otherwise it gets awfully confusing.
Also, I have sent a few links to challenges which haven’t been joined yet. Make sure you go to your team challenge page and then join the challenge. If you have already joined your challenge should show up under “my challenges.”4 -
@martaindale Happy Birthday!
@marisap2010 I remember you showing us the preview of that medal, it’s really cool. That is such a pretty pic of you!1 -
5k quickie run this morning - had to get home in time for the new dishwasher to be delivered. My husband successfully installed a dishwasher, yay!
I’m back to running sub 30 minute 5k, which is nice. Since the weather was much cooler my pace is improving. Knee feels okay at the faster pace too.9 -
Happy birthday @martaindale!!
@marisap2010 Great job on your mental health 10k. I agree - love the medal and very nice pic, you look great! Hope all is well with your dad
Great job on your 18 mile run @Teresa502! Are you going to do the virtual MCM on the date the race should be?
@quilteryoyo glad you had nicer weather, it certainly does help with pace and generally not feeling so hard. Sometimes things feel like a struggle - I've been doing mostly shorter runs for a couple of weeks and they all feel hard. But today's longer run didn't feel any harder, so at least there's that? Probably because of cooler temps too.
Nice job getting back to a sub 30 minute 5k @rheddmobile. Great news about your knee!

@rheddmobile Hooray for the new dishwasher! And good job on the 5K. Glad the knee seems to be cooperating.
Today was a rest day for me so my husband and I drove to Denton (2 hours away) to take our son his bedroom furniture. But my new shoes came in today so I am looking forward to running in the morning.

Many happy returns @martaindale
Hope you have better news from your Dad @Marisap2010 & nice medal!
Day 11 of keto complete and my body has not learnt how to convert fat to energy yet. Set out for 6 miles today and 2 miles in the cramps started. I can't tell if it is my body searching for carbs that aren't there or trying to access the belly fat for energy stores??? I kept it going until 4.1 miles though a slow pace, further than before and then walked the last 2 miles home.
I am going to stick it out for a month to see if I can train my body to the new energy source. No complaints on the weight loss side of things, almost 1/2 a stone down!4 -
Great run @rheddmobile ! I aspire to a sub 30 minute 5K. Not happening anytime soon, I fear. But, one has to have goals, right? Yeah for the new dishwasher.
Thanks @katharmonic ! That gives me hope that my scheduled 10 miles tomorrow won't be any worse than my 3 milers.

Mostly sunny and low 60s F this morning. Wanted to do a nice slow run, but then started thinking about the marathon distance I did this week -- what would my time be? Is my goal of 5:15:00 next week reasonable? So naturally my brain started moving my legs a little more quickly and today ended up at an overall easy pace. Added my times up from this week, mirroring how I intend to run next week. Came up with 5:13:58. So barring injury or meltdown, I should be OK. Plan to hydrate well and wear my racing shoes -- they haven't gotten any work this year. I still think my stretch goal of under 5 hours is a little ambitious, but... Like @quilteryoyo said, one has to have goals. I too aspire to a sub 30 minute 5k, but both the clock and the calendar seem to be against me.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
