I refused to set an alarm so I slept in a little, worked all day, and then a friend was able to meet me late afternoon for a run. Then I got home and did a kettlebell and mace workout that my trainer texted, which was tougher than expected. I am somewhat afraid to use my kettlebell in the house for fear it goes through the floor or a wall and having dropped it hard (outside) today that's probably a good thing. There's always the basement I guess.5 -

@kgirlhart - I am so sorry about your about your job but Congratulations!! on the new job!
@HonuNui - Love your pictures even in poor conditions! That trumpet fish is amazing!
@ContraryMaryMary - my gp isn't a runner but fully supports my running and defers when I have a running related issue to my Orthopedist/Rheumatologist who is a runner. He also always sends me to a PT (physical therapist) who is also a runner with the goal to get me back out to running.
@durhammfp - I do intervals with 90s rest most of the time. Sometimes more sometimes less but 90s seems to work well for me. Sometimes I run the easy or walk. It really depends on how I am feeling. Another fun way to do 'speed work' is to just pick a point in the distance (not too far away) and run fast to that point then easy for a bit and pick another point and repeat. You can play with how fast, how far and you can change it up as you go. The point is to have fun with it. These are called fartleks (speed play).
@hanlonsk - when you go out to run a longer distance, have you tried wrapping your ankle with KT tape to provide some extra support? I have had pretty weak ankles (thus the single leg stands while brushing my teeth mentioned in my previous post) all my life and used to wrap or have them wrapped before a HM. It seemed to help.
@Faebert - glad you are feeling better but sorry about the rain moving inside your home! Not fun having to deal with that!
@quilteryoyo - I hope you can work with your doctor and the PA for your recovery plan. They will know what you can and should be able to do when and you already know the running side of things.
Rheumatic fever is pretty rare these days. It results from repeated strep infections and a build up of the infection that your body can't fight off. I had weekly and sometimes more frequent blood tests to check my white blood count and the strep load. I actually charted those values hoping to see them going in the right directions over time. The strep infection attacks the joints and heart muscle so they don't want you to do anything that could result in damage. I was also on very high doses of antibiotics and prophylactic antibiotics for years and years afterwards. I am also high risk if exposed to strep again so anytime our daughter (or I) had a sore throat I would get tested and typically more antibiotics.
I had a couple of good runs the yesterday and today despite the heat. We are still in the high 90's and bumping up to 100 again. The meteorologists keep saying a cooling trend is coming but so far not so much. I have to say I think I am FINALLY getting used to the heat somewhat. It also helps that the humidity is down too. None of this is good for the fires so we are all holding our collective breath hoping more fires don't take off and the ones burning get under control. Hobbes unfortunately is still not used to the heat. I took him yesterday and we ended up walking home (it was 88F at that point), despite him wanting to keep running. It was clear he wasn't feeling well and when we got home he crashed out and basically didn't move much the entire day. No more hot weather running for him.
Today on the trail I saw these and they really brightened my day and motivated me to keep running when I was feeling so hot and just wanting to be done. I have no idea who put them out or if there are more along the trail. I will have to look tomorrow.

@shanaber Thanks for the info on Rheumatic fever sounds like an awful experience. I did not know all of that. I'm glad it is rare these days, but sorry that you still have to be extra careful about contracting strep and have lingering issues. Sounds like you are doing all you can to make sure you are healthy. Great run in the heat. Poor Hobbes sounds like my Tippy. If it's hot, she wants inside where it is air conditioned. Love the painted rocks.

Good morning! It was a nice 45F when I headed out this morning. It was still dark and I could smell a skunk but I never did see it. My light did catch a dead snake in the road seconds before my foot would have landed on it. Thankfully (?), it was belly-up so it was white and my light picked up on it. Eeek! Other creatures I saw was a bunny rabbit, cows and my neighbor’s chocolate lab who didn’t even bother barking or getting up from where he was laying. His name is Colt so I called out a gentle hello to him. I have no fear of him biting me but he’s a big fella and he loves to lean and jump on you to be petted.
@shanaber – Wow, bedrest for an entire year when you are 14 years old. I imagine it would be hard at any age but for a young teenager it had to be tough. Congratulations on conquering and recovering. I hope that your PM adjusts to your body soon. I hope the CA fires are under control soon too. Hugs to Hobbes and I absolutely love the rocks!
@quilteryoyo – Glad you got an inhaler for your asthma. You are so strong playing tennis and running and taking care of your property. That has to be a good factor in your recovery process. You got this!
@katharmonic – I’m always afraid the kettlebell will go flying out of my hands!
@HonuNui – Love the snorkeling picture!
@Faebert – Hope things are looking up for you today.
Those trials are beautiful @marisap2010.
Thanks @skippygirlsmom! Enjoy your well-deserved rest day!
Has anyone else noticed that when they “like” a post on their mobile device that it gives 2 likes instead of 1?

Hi, I'd like to join this one. I'm trying for 20 miles. I'm a new runner so I'm starting small. I've already done 2 miles since the 1st. I'll be going tomorrow. I'm hoping to hit a little over 2 miles.12

October off to a great start with over 1 hour of exercise each day, 3 runs covering 19.7 miles and 2 rides for another 33.2 miles totalling 5 hours 26 minutes plus cool down and warm up walks on top. Eyes on the prize!! 😊
Like the advice @quilteryoyo and I will go for a longer run tomorrow.7 -
Beautiful trails @marisap2010
@Teresa502 I haven't noticed that, but I will try to see if it does that next time I'm on my phone.
Welcome @rebeccahetrick! This is a really fun and encouraging group.5 -
@Teresa502 Mine is just giving one"like."2

October miles: 16.9
Space Race miles: 205.76
I took the weekend off because my body decided it needed to recuperate. I also caught up on my sadly forsaken housework! Back at it this morning with a 5.1 mile run in the cool temps. Ahhhh.
Please add me to the run across the world. Sounds fun! I haven't really had a running injury except for the spill I took last year and the resulting skinned knee that would make any 3rd grader jealous. It took months to heal properly because of the size and location. I kept breaking the scab and starting all over. Ugh.

Yay! I’m finally off the mark, and only a little rain to contend with this morning. Managed 10K. Kind of scary as more than half of it was in pitch dark, street lighting around me isn’t so great and plenty of squelchy leaves underfoot made me a bit nervous of slipping. With heavy heart I am currently researching treadmills, that’s if roof repairs leave any spare change!! 😬
Forgot to answer the monthly question @quilteryoyo. Squeamish people may also want to look away from this one....
I think most of you know I had surgery back in December last year. Despite various other running stuff (some nasty falls, a persistent dodgy hamstring from a yoga injury of all things!) recovering from this operation is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I had a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. So it was an incredibly invasive and brutal operation. I had under muscle reconstruction so it meant having my chest muscle cut and lifted from the chest wall. I had nearly 3 months off running and about 5 months no upper body work. My core still isn’t as good as it was and I can barely do full push ups when before I could do 20 or more in one go. But I haven’t given up. And I know from my Mum and my sister it would have been so much worse if I’d actually got cancer. I was so lucky to be able to have the surgery to prevent it. So even if I can’t do all I did before, I can still work to finding my new ‘best’. I have every faith that you will too @quilteryoyo
Amazing stories from others on here. But @rheddmobile yours just blew me away and has made me even more determined!
@kgirlhart I’m late but just wanted to say I’m sorry about the job and am hoping your new opportunity is even better. You deserve the best. X
October goal - 80m
October total - 6.2m
5/10: 6.2m

Welcome!!2 -
So @eleanorhawkins how's the toe?
@Tramboman your pain is still valid. The rest of us are just crazy.
I have had a couple of surgeries. Not really worth mentioning.
I had to skim a lot, but welcome to all of our newbies - you will not find a more supportive group!
So Saturday's run with Nick, Sophie's husband....
Well it was actually great to share the experience with him because he said he wanted to go but also I don't think I can do that all the time because on one hand I feel like it slowed me down a lot - lots of walking - lots of talking. Then, i couldn't breathe. Then, my knee started hurting really bad, but because of the way it hurts and where I am pretty sure it's my IT band again. He fell a lot. I had not considered that technical trails would be difficult for a novice runner. I am a jerk.
We actually had a great time and I'm glad we went and we'll probably do it again. But I don't think it's something I can do all the time because I run alone, exclusively. I am a loner and I like it that way. I just also happen to love my friends.
I ended last week with over 30 miles which is a huge taper down for me, which is also super wise because I have to do this super progressive build for the 100 miler in Indiana.
I'm very tired today. I'd honestly just like a nap.
Instead, I'll finish out the work day, do some PT, feed the kids, probably run. Bleh. Mondays are really not the greatest.

@marisap2010 - what a beautiful place to run! I would love to have a cool and shady trail to run!
@Teresa502 - so glad you missed stepping on the snake and that he was dead! One of the guys I follow on Strava literally ran into a copper head, kicking it with his foot and not even realizing it until another runner pointed it out to him! Yikes! I don't use the app on my phone and on the website it definitely only gives one 'like'.
@faebert - I hadn't thought about your recovery from the surgery and coming back to running. I am so happy it was without incident! You are definitely so fortunate that that type of preventative measure is available when cancer is so prevalent in a family. I have another friend who also had the surgery after all the women in her family had breast cancer. She had to fight to find a doctor who would be willing to do it. At that time it wasn't widely available yet and definitely not in TX.
Welcome @rebeccahetrick- feel free to jump into our conversations and be sure to post your progress. We are here to cheer you on and offer advice if we can.
I went out for a run this morning but it ended up more walk than run because the air quality is so bad. My eyes were burning, lungs were burning and I was coughing. I had planned to go longer but cut it short and walked home. I did find more painted rocks though! 😊 I posted my pictures from yesterday on our Next-Door app and found out they were all painted and placed by an 11yo for her Girl Scout "Bronze" award. It is the highest award for the GS level she is at. With the project she wanted to bring hope and happiness to her community. I think it is pretty cool and also fun just to hunt them out as they aren't all obvious.Looks like we have a few more days of very hot weather before it cools down and dare I say it there is a chance of RAIN! But then it gets hot again...

@Camaramandy648 the toe is ok, thanks for asking. I think it will probably end up coming off, it doesn't look like it's really attached underneath and there's a big hole under it but at least it isn't leaking or anything any more. I'm still slathering some antibiotic cream on at night more as a preventative measure than anything else. I remember the agony of the infection when it was ingrown in my teens that eventually led to it being removed and the roots at the sides killed... I will do ANYTHING to avoid that pain again. Seriously. I would rather give birth to another 9lb baby.
Glad the running with another experience wasn't too bad. I always run alone too, and though sometimes I think I would like someone to run with, it's my me-time and my therapy.
If you would like a nap, I would suggest you listen to your body and take a nap. You do so much, you might benefit from giving yourself permission to be 'lazy' every now and then?
I've lost track of when and what I've posted. My body is still recovering from Saturday's virtual race. I really did push myself hard, and I'm feeling it. I should probably follow my own advice and take some real rest, but mentally I just can't at the moment. The situation with my father has be anxious and uneasy and keeping active is the way I'm coping. They're not operating until the 28th, and we won't know how bad it is or what else they're going to do until after that. He's home to wait, and not coping well at all. He goes from almost normal sounding, to scared, to gloomy and sure he's going to die, to confused and not understanding things, all within a 3 or 4 minute conversation. So hard not to be there. Even harder when we've never really been good at talking to each other.
Yeah, tomorrow ought to be a rest day, not gonna happen.
