Monthly question?
How much pie (or similar poor choice) have you eaten in the last 3 months?
I haven’t eaten that much pie lately, but I seem to have been eating everything else for the last few weeks. I actually bought a new battery for my scale yesterday, so we shall see in a few minutes how much damage has been done. I did buy some mincemeat mini pies at Fresh Market a few days ago to take to my parents’ house for the holidays, although I am uncertain of anyone else will eat them. My husband wouldn’t touch them when we were in England a few years ago.3 -
5 treadmill miles this morning.
Halfway though the month and looks like I am right on schedule

Hoping to run today over lunch and shoot for 2.5-3 miles. It is cold today, but I'm hoping I can bundle up and power through. And when I say cold, it's only 28 degrees F, so not terrible, but it's the coldest day we've had in a bit here. I'm just thankful we arent in the negatives yet!6 -
2 runs this weekend.
1st run was supposed to be friday but i put it off. after yoga class saturday, speed demon and I pulled off 2 miles. it was supposed to be 3 but nope, no legs. i don't think she minded too much.
Yesterday we ran the Hateya canicross event. Up by me, we did not have any snow or ice. The night before the RD posted that it was muddy. But when we got there, it was ice. lots of ice. And of course, i didn't bring my spikes. thank goodness, they had some for sale. the kathoola nanospikes were awesome. i didn't slide at all.
also got a new foster. she was thrown from a car and run over. she lost a leg. who knows what happened before they decided they didn't want her any more.9 -
Just in passing - all the Europe Pastor Vincent Memorial medals were sent on Saturday. They are on a 'signed for' delivery.9

@mbaker566 That is so sad about your new foster. Who would do that to an animal? If you don't want it, there are lots of other things you could do besides throwing out the car window and running over it. I just don't understand. Glad you are taking care of her for now. She looks like a sweetheart.
CoVID update:Dad seems to be doing a little better, but he is giving up. He told the nurse this morning that he just wanted to give up, die, and go to heaven. We are trying to do some things to get him in a better state of mind.
We took him a digital frame with about 200 pictures of the great grandbabies on it. Also took him his cell phone to see if he could hear better with it. It's a Jitterbug flip phone, but I was hopeful. He tried to call me, but didn't say a word and must not have been able to hear me. All I could hear was breathing. We're also going to try to use a spare ipad set up with a FB account for him so we can call and video chat whenever we want. Not sure how that will work, since he is NOT tech savvy at all. But, we are hoping.
They were able to lower his oxygen input to 80% today and his levels stayed up, as long as he keeps the bipap machine on. He's been trying to take it off. Then his oxygen goes into the 60's. Still, that's a good sign that they are able to lower the input. We just have to convince him that he can beat this.14 -
Today's assignment from the Yeti 12 Days of Christmas Challenge was to walk a 5K. Due to time constraints and the fact that it was cold, windy and raining outside I decided I would do a run/walk combo on the treadmill. I set my Garmin to treadmill mode. I realized after about 2 1/2 miles that my Garmin was not recording the distance when I would walk. The time on the watch kept ticking but not the distance so I ended up doing almost 4 miles according to the treadmill just to get my Garmin to hit 3.1.
The director didn't email today's assignment until after 11:00 pm ET last night which is way past my bedtime.
He's doing better today though. He sent tomorrow's assignment which is a 5 mile progressive run before lunch today.
I hope your dad's spirits pick up @quilteryoyo! Glad his oxygen levels are doing better.2 -

That sounds like a plan. It's cold here today, too. Actually not super cold, but it was in the 70's a couple of days ago. The rapid swings make it feel a little extra miserable. Reward cocoa sounds like just the thing to get me out the door.

@quilteryoyo I'm keeping you guys in my thoughts. How is your mom holding up? It is a good sign that they are able to wean your dad's oxygen requirement, even a little. I hope he continues on the path to recovery.0

You rock. Thank you!0 -
I had speedwork on the schedule for after my morning daycare class, and my treadmill is in the same room where the kids are doing school. I was putting it off, not wanting to run during their classes (too noisy)... and then one class finished early and I realized I'd have a 30 minute window if I started immediately. I did 200 meter intervals (fast, then slow, repeat) until I ran out of time, and got exactly 5k. The faster pace felt better today, probably because of how short the intervals were.
@quilteryoyo I'm following your every update (here and on caring bridge), and am praying for all three of you.3 -

I waited until the afternoon for it to warm up a bit. It was still cold but the sun came out and that helps. My plan called for 0.5 mile repeats. It was a good workout and I’m glad I waited on the weather. It would have been really miserable this morning.3 -

Meant to run outside earlier in the day but got caught up at work so just a treadmill warmup before strength training.2 -
I haven't updated in a while as I've been exhausted - have managed to read and 'like' and 'hug' though and am thinking of all of you that are struggling at the moment, especially @quilteryoyo.
My exhaustion is a combination of Christmas festivities (all child related), work booking me on a 6:30am flight to Wellington for a meeting (who does that? - that's a 4:30am wake up to get to the airport on time - and all for a meeting that could be done by Zoom), and lots of running - four events in the last six weeks and my coach has a different idea from me as to what taper and recovery look like!
On Saturday I ran my final event for the year - the Westcoaster. It is the most awesome day out. It's possibly one of the most gruelling marathon courses in New Zealand but we do it as a team of four. Last year I ran the first leg, which although the shortest at just under 9km, involves a lot of sand dunes and running downstream (ankle deep water) for over a kilometre.
This year, I ran leg 3. Only 10km, but with 600 metres of elevation. It is staggeringly beautiful. Perhaps the most stunning run I've ever done. Much of it is up on the cliff tops - it's actually quite frightening if you think too much about it. It's a very narrow track along the edge of the cliff. No room for passing in some places. Make one wrong footstep and you could fall several hundred metres. To enjoy the view you have to stop, impossible to run and gaze out to sea. In parts the track is deeply rutted - it's only about 30cm (is that two feet?) wide and often up to knee height, and in one place, up to my shoulders. I'm not quite sure how larger people manage it.
It was also an incredibly windy day. Took much of the heat out of things which was helpful, but in places I had to hold my hat and my race bib to ensure I didn't lose either. And at one point, I was literally blown off my feet and into a bush - fortunately a flax bush and not a gorse bush. Thankfully, with the nature of the geography, it was blowing onshore - so there was no risk of being blown over the edge.
So, while it was a marvellous day out, all that hill climbing, narrow track, and the wind made for a slow time - 1:30 for 10k. But as I said to my team mates, we're here for a good time, not a fast time.
Photo below of us at the finish (there was no course photographer on my leg - too hard for them to get to). We were the first, all-women team home! We also placed 13th out of 13 teams...
The photographer said to jump on three! (I'm in the white shorts and know how to follow instructions!)
This is the Te Henga walkway where I ran (not my photo) to show you the cliff and the stunning views.
As for pies, as @Avidkeo said, they're more a savoury thing here. I do love a steak and cheese pie and my husband makes Gordon Ramsey's chicken and leek pie which is delicious. But that's winter food, so no pies here at the moment. Please don't ask how much ice cream I've eaten so far this month.
On the sweet side, I do make a killer lemon meringue pie. And I am partial to a homemade Christmas mince pie, as long as they don't have peel in them. But they're tiny and i don't think of them as pies, they're more like a tartlet.
But back to running. Today called for 60 minutes aerobic followed by 10 strides. Happy to say, my legs are largely recovered from Saturday's hills. I did remember telling my coach I wanted a lazy few weeks before race buildup begins again in January, so, naturally, he gave me an hour at aerobic pace today, 1:30 tomorrow and another hour on Thursday. I think he may be trying to kill me.13 -
Oh, and I just managed to win a pair of Ronhill running sunglasses (two pairs actually, for me and a friend). Stoked!8
-
@TheMrWobbly thanks!
@quilteryoyo thinking of you and your parents, I know how hard it is to know they're feeling that way and not be able to help, the medical part does sound like a bit of an improvement though!
