@pfeiferlindsey Yeah for your race tomorrow. Good luck and look forward to hearing how it goes!
@Tramboman With your description of the wind today, I would say the fun meter was pretty low today too. Great job for getting that run in.
@WhatMeRunning @MobyCarp has been greatly missed around here. I don't know if you knew @PastorVincent too, but he passed away last year also.

It looks like I'm going to give it shot running the half tomorrow. I will be taking it very easy, just trying to finish. And not make my back worse. The course is 4 of the same loop so I have plenty of opportunities to bail out if I need to. I was so not excited about that when I signed up but now it seems like a good thing - not that I want to bail but just for breaking it up into manageable sections.
Thanks for the good wishes. Hopefully I'll have good news to report tomorrow that I came out unscathed from the whole thing and can check a March HM off my list!13 -

I knew I needed to stop at the grocery store after work today, so I got up early enough to get my walk in before breakfast.
As I was leaving, I came upon a fairly large tree that had broken off and fell all the way across my driveway. It was dead, so I was hoping it would be rotten and light. NOPE. That sucker was heavy. So, I did what I needed to do, but probably not what I should have done, and man handled it out of the way. It took pretty much all of my pulling power. I did think about telling work I would be late and getting my Gator and log chain to pull it, but wasn't sure the battery was up on the Gator and that log chain is heavy too. Had it hurt, I would have quit. But, as it was, I didn't feel anything. Pulling doesn't seem to put as much pressure on the breast bone as pushing does. I've been fine all day, so I think I'm good. It's 3 more weeks before I'm supposed to be able to do anything I want. I guess this was a good test of my healing.
The mom of the neighbor who has the puppies is in the hospital in Alabama and not doing well. She has heart valve problems and has been hospitalized and told she needs a heart transplant. The family is going down there today. I am going to go take care of the dogs, at their house over the weekend. If it warms up enough, I may try running/walking there to get my exercise in at the same time. Expect a couple of new puppy pictures. One has his eyes completely open. The other three almost do. Also, any prayers of positive thoughts for her mom will be greatly appreciated. She's a very sweet lady.10 -
@katharmonic That's great news! Be careful and I look forward to hearing how it went.0
-
@quilteryoyo - I remember @PastorVincent well. He was very active here. He and I talked a lot about running hills, along with the regular chit-chat. Very sad to hear this. I hope your neighbor gets the transplant and bounces back. Congrats on the Rambo style tree removal without any issues! Puppy pics are always good.
@katharmonic - Can't wait to hear all about your event tomorrow. Here's to a healthy, strong finish!2 -

I had a hard time getting up and going this morning. It was cold and I really didn't want to get out of bed. But since today is a "rest" day and I only need one mile for my streak I got up and got out there. It was cold but it was not windy and it was a good run. I ended up running 2 miles . (I actually was at 1.75 when I got back home and so I ended up running up to get an even 2.) And I had negative splits. Which is really easy when you only run 2 miles. 😁
@katharmonic Glad the back is better. Good luck on the HM tomorrow.
@WhatMeRunning Welcome back!
@pfeiferlindsey Good luck on your race tomorrow.
@quilteryoyo I hope your friend will be ok. I'm looking forward to the puppy pics.
We also lost a limb off our mesquite tree on Tuesday night and I had to move it off the driveway so I could go to work. It was heavier than I expected, but yours looks much bigger.

@WhatMeRunning - Welcome back! What have you been up to?2
-
@WhatMeRunning well I'm glad I'm not losing my mind then! Welcome back! We miss @MobyCarp and @PastorVincent too. They come up in our conversations from time to time, so feel free to share memories as they come to you.
@quilteryoyo I am not pleased that you moved that tree, but I do love your independence and get-er-done spirit. And this is a compliment - you are SO much younger than most people who have lived the same number of years as you.
I'm heading out to the not-a-race "trash pickup" course preview, will let you all know how it goes.7 -
@WhatMeRunning yes it was hard losing @mobycarp. You also may have noticed @PastorVincent has been silenced also.
We have lost a member of our little family every year for the last 3 years, starting with @KeepRunningFatboy I miss them all every day. We still have their collective wisdom in those of us who are still here, and as long as we always remember them.
Well that went a bit morbid. Oi blokes, look after yourself this year please. I don't think I could handle losing another beloved member this year.8 -
Tired. Had a study day today. So no long run.
I'm kinda blending 2 plans together atm, and trying to take the best from each. My next HM is in 3 weeks, so I've also started a gaming training plan to get my half after than under 2hrs.and I'm using Hal for the remaining 3 weeks. So just mixing them up. Which basically means more tempo/speed sessions and fewer base runs. Don't worry I'm being careful.4 -

^^^ This. Also, nobody from this group is allowed to train for Boston anymore
*waves* hi all, love you, miss you, 250 posts behind, no chance of catching up, new job is intense!

I was unable to get enough sleep time to wake up early and get my planned long run (only barely long timewise) in before people started waking up as originally planned. My youngest (8) managed to tap an unlimited hyperactivity reserve last night and keep me up late (11 pm) before he seemed ready for bed. He woke me up every hour at midnight, 1:00 and 2:00 jumping around and hollering (was shaking windows). How he didn't wake the others is truly beyond me, but I'm thankful otherwise I would not have been able to sleep in and get a nice 7:32 total sleep per the Garmin watch. Since I am now rested up I'm hoping to fit in a 30 minute effort sometime today.
@shanaber - I was focused on building strength when I cut back my running. I wound up just doing daily walks for light cardio as I dug deeper into that. Things went great until about mid 2019 when I had trouble carving out time from work for about 8 months and I let all that go. By the time things started to become manageable again the lockdown happened which probably permanently turned the family situation upside down. I have 3 kids with severe autism and it's impossible to describe how difficult things are here now. I know I won't likely reclaim the time to train like I used to, but I'm starting somewhere. It's not about finding time any more. It's about getting proper sleep and sufficient monitoring to keep the kids from eloping or destroying the house any further. I wish I had a better update, but from the sound of it things have been a touch rough here too.

@kgirlhart Glad you had a nice, short run. Limbs can be deceivingly heavy, especially this time of year when they are full of sap. I love living in the middle of the woods, but dead trees and limbs are a pain.
@polskagirl01 Thank you! It's funny that you should say that. Yesterday, when I was telling the office assistant at work about moving the tree, she was aghast too. Then she said, "But you are probably in better shape than anyone else who works here." Sadly, she's probably right and I am the second oldest person there. Most are right out of college or in their early 30's. I do take that as a compliment. I hope your "non race" goes well.
@WhatMeRunning Hang in there. I don't have kids, but know that must be tough. Like you said, you need to be as healthy as possible in order to be there for them during this difficult time.4 -

Sunny and upper 20s F, with very little wind. Another good day to run.
@quilteryoyo The reason you have a Gator and a logging chain is to move limb like that off your driveway.
@katharmonic Good luck on your half!!!
Happy Spring to those of us on this side of the International Date Line!!!
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)5 -
@Tramboman That is one of the reasons. It would have just taken more time, even if it started. I wanted to try fast first, since I didn't want to be late to work. Of course, had I hurt myself, I would have been REALLY late. Guess I should have used my head for something more than a hat rack. Nice early morning run.3

Since it ended well, everything's good!!!!1 -
Hope all of you racing today good luck!
@quilteryoyo you impress me every day!
The last thing I thought I would do today was run a sub 2 hour HM. So I was shocked when I hit the stop button that I was only 28 seconds over. Felt pretty good most of the way. Started getting a little hard about mile 10, but didn't have to do any walking today. Feet felt good the whole time, except for about mile 7, but it was mild, and only lasted a few minutes. So pretty successful day. Now to go replace the power steering pump on the truck 😐

Race report: A needlessly long report just to say "I survived". Feel free to skip.
The race was the Lake Effect Half Marathon and typically this race is in February I think and it is always snowy and miserable so I have never done it. Although I volunteered at the finish line one year and nearly froze to death. But it was postponed due to covid this year and moved to a different location away from the lake. So there was no lake effect snow and in fact it was a beautiful sunny day. It was about 25 degrees when I headed there in my car, but warmed up quite a bit. It's about 50 now but during the race I don't think it was over 40. I was a bit overdressed for what I would normally wear for a race but because I wasn't planning to race hard I was okay with tying a jacket around my waist when I was ready to take it off.
The start was well done, with about 30 people in the corral at a time lined up in pairs. You started in the on-deck area and then when the previous group was done, moved into the start area. Then 2 people at time started every 10 seconds. It seemed to move very smoothly. And there were almost no lines for the porta potties because of the staggered start times which was such a nice change.
I was feeling ok but a little worried about taking this on. It really was not a great idea probably to run a HM after 5 days off running because of back issues and in brand new out of the box shoes. But they were the same model I've worn for a long time so I wasn't too worried and thought fresh shoes were better than the worn out shoes that I waited too long to replace.
The course was a loop of about 3.4 miles and we looped it 4 times. It was very flat and on neighborhood streets. When I started it took me a while to warm up and feel less awkward after not running for several days. But the first mile was my fastest for the whole race. It started to feel more normal a couple of miles in and I felt pretty confident finishing the first loop. Loop 2 seemed but around mile 5 I had a side stitch and had to work through that. I really wanted to just stop as I rounded the corner and passed the finish area knowing I had to go around twice more. Things got a little shaky around mile 8. My back was pretty ok, but everything else seemed tight and sore, probably trying to compensate and protect my back I tightened up. I remembered I had a pack of honey stinger chews in my pocket so I got those out and ate them and took some water at the aid station right there. That may have helped a bit.
I saw my trainer lap me at about this point so I knew he was on his final loop and would be done in about 15 minutes, where I had a LOT left. I was a little bitter about that happy for him. Things were tough finishing this 3rd loop and I really wanted to call it and bail out. But I couldn't do it. I passed the finish area and gritted my teeth and said I can do one more effing lap. I kept saying at all the landmarks I remembered - last time I have to pass that thing/those people and estimating how many more songs on my playlist I had left. Just 5 more songs, that's nothing! I tried to pick up the pace a little to get this thing over with but it seemed like I couldn't move any faster. Looking back at the pace though, mile 13 was my second fastest. When I was approaching the last corner, there were some people that I had seen every loop and they were chalking encouragement on the street and really enthusiastically cheering every time. One woman had asked me the loop before it if was my 4th loop and I had sadly said no and this time she said THIS is your last loop. GO! And I smiled and tried to pick it up a little. I rounded that last corner and saw the finish and gave it as much kick as I could and even gave a bit more to pass a guy in the finish chute. I was so relieved to be done I almost cried.
This was not the race I would have hoped for obviously. I would have liked to have been up to going for a PR of under 2:10, but instead I told me friend yesterday that I was hoping to at least finish in 2:30. I squeaked in at 2:29:25. But I did it. I finished, didn't walk at all except for walking through a couple of water stops, and I don't think I am too much worse for wear. I took a hot bath and now I'm alternating heat and ice to just soothe things a bit, but it mostly I think I just have normal post-HM tired soreness in the legs and feet and the back seems about the same.
