Supposed to be a rest day, but I needed to offset some of that merlot I drank. First time using the Nike Run Club app. It's pretty slick being coached throughout a run, although admittedly it was light on practical training advice. It offered mostly inspirational foo-foo stuff. Still, pretty slick. I just really hate lugging around my heavy phone. It bounces around like brick. Oh 2 oz. SanDisk mp3 player powered by a single AA battery, I miss you. Legs felt wooden today. Hot & icky.
June Goal: 8.58/30 mil
05/01 : 2.22 mi : C25K W1R1
05/02 : 0.00 mi : core
05/03 : 2.22 mi : C25k W1R2
05/04 : 4.14 mi : NRC guided run (3.11 run/1.03 walk)
@rheddmobile So sorry to hear of the difficulties you're facing at the moment. Wishing the best for you & your mom and hope you get some time off to decompress. We all need personal time.
@yirara Many Garmin watches support "Smart Recording" and "Every Second" recording. Every Second should increase the recording frequency and lead to more detailed tracks. https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=4aJkunyPWb0Iezs3creNs9
@katharmonic That's so cool. About the only wildlife I see on a regular basis are pigeons & rats!
@Avidkeo That is a CRAZY scary story! That woman is an ultra runner, and she suddenly goes into cardiac arrest? OMG! But I suppose if your heart has to stop, having a cardiologist and another surgeon next to ya is as-good-as-it-gets.
@martaindale I have bad knees too so I feel for you. Really hope it's something your Dr. can resolve with nothing more than rest & light physio.
@Alphahowls You're running a HM Every-Single-Day? WOWZERS! I'm simultaneously jealous & horrified.7 -

Oh yes, I know. My watch is set the best I could. Chose the best GPS set possible. still it's rubbish. On my last run I needed the following meters extra to finish 1km on the watch compared to phone
+10 (hey, that went smashingly!)
+50 (whoop!)
+35 (meh!)
+61 (grrr)
+13 (hmmm)
so in the end I had to run an additional 169m to finish my run on the watch compared to the phone. I'm getting a foot pod soon. hopefully that will help a bit as I have no idea whatelse to do. The GPS signal just is really bad in this town (not elsewhere).6 -

LOL I guess the reason I read it that way was because the guy laying by the bicycle was in my vision as I was reading it.
I thought the exact same thing!skippygirlsmom wrote: »
I don’t know if any of you remember I volunteered last year at a XC meet here in town where some of the best high school runners from all over the country came out. The race director is doing a track meet next weekend. I’m so excited, they are doing 800, mile and 3200. Again the best runners from all over the country. It’s so exciting!!!
I remember that meet because a girl from my area did very well and made the local news.1 -
Distance Log:

5.5 mile run with 829 feet of Elevation. Practice hill repeat run using trekking poles for the first time. Not sure if I'm going to use them for my race next week yet. Still undecided as not sure I can be bothered to carry them/put them in my running backpack.
Also, in my head it feels like using poles is cheating? I know many people use them and my race will have 7,000 feet of ascent, but I'm not really sure many will use them on the day and whether they are necessary.6 -
I wish I had advice @sweetdaisy13 but your event is beyond anything I've experienced. The best I can proffer is; Run the event the same way you trained for it.
Best of luck on race day!5 -

Last July we did North Kaibab down like 3 miles? Then in October we did South Kaibab down about 3 miles. Coming out is a *kitten*.
We start out on the North Rim on the North Kaibab trail and then transition over to the Bright Angel trail. We have side trips to Ribbon Falls and also to Plateau Point for the sunset one evening. I must admit that I'm worried about melting into a giant puddle in the heat!
I've heard bright angel is an easier climb out over south kaibab. There's one part of bright angel that looks tough. Looks almost straight up lol3 -
6-1 7k tempo
6-2 rest
6-3 7k tempo
6-4 6k tempo
6-5 7k tempo

Sunny, low 70s F, and a saving breeze from the southwest. still tired today, but better than yesterday.
@sweetdaisy13 Take the poles. They will make good tools to cudgel or poke those who look down on them. It's your run, too.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)

7/17 Run of the Ox 5k, Mantua, OH

@sweetdaisy13 I probably wouldn't bother with the poles unless you've practiced a lot with them. It seems some people like them, some don't, and some races do or don't allow them. Mine don't fold down enough to stow away, so I haven't used them since wintertime on snowy/icy forest trails. But then I think that's when I hurt my back - so make sure you're used to using them properly if you do take them!

16 miles in the rain this morning, and it felt great.
I always heard long 80% of runs should be slow but never really knew how to quantify slow. Yesterday I listened to a podcast that said it should be about 65% of 5k pace. So calculated that and it come out to 10:30 pace. Well I tried, but came in just under 10. But now I know what to shoot for 🙂

Nice run @sweetdaisy13 ! I'm not sure I can help you with the decision about the poles or not. I've never used them. Does the race site suggest them? Have you ran/hiked the race route to see how steep/technical the trail is? I would think those things would play into whether you need them or not.
@AlphaHowls I'm sure if you want it, you will see that it happens.
Glad you had a nice run in the rain @Scott6255 ! I wish I had that pace when running hard. LOL3 -

Thanks for all the advice regarding running with poles. We should be getting race information emailed to us this weekend with further details regarding elevation/ascents, kit etc.
@AlphaHowls gosh, I'm in awe of your mileage. Marathons on top of daily Half Marathon is amazing. No idea how you do it without getting injured!4 -

For me, it is about listening to the body and going slow. I am not into racing, so my pace is meandering and loping along. Only time I pick up my pace is when my running partner pushes me. That being said, I do have injuries every so often, but not always due to running.
