True, but I won't let it deter me. There are a lot of Smithsonian museums I have yet to visit (and some I want to visit again because they were great last time).
Also, D.C. has some of the most diverse food of any city in the U.S. Can't miss out on that!
I loved D.C. and the surrounding area when I was stationed there. So much to do, never time to get bored!
That's my hope! I just need to find the most efficient ways to get from point A to point B, you know? Trying to look up the nearest bus/shuttle stations and when they are operational now that I'm back in town again.

This may or may not help. When I had to travel upare from the south I used the VRE app for parking, schedules, purchase tickets, etc.1 -

It's D.C. so, several million people? The metro has over 6 million people and you can't get anywhere without having a car or a way to get to the metro or a bus station.
Yes and no...depends where.. used to take metro and ride bus to metro.
Where I live it is not recommended to walk to the metro. There are shuttle buses to take you there, just gotta know the schedule. Some people carpool to the metro or to their work, which is nice.
There have also recently been a slurry of random shootings in our area, so it was strongly recommended to avoid being on foot for the foreseeable future.
The last time I visited here, it wasn't too hard to take a bus to the metro station and ride the metro everywhere. And I guess now they've streamlined the fare system, so both the buses and the metro take the same payment system (a rechargeable card similar to BART in San Fransisco).
Most parts of the city are walk-able and safe-ish.. just not where I live.

Definitely a place the government put us!
I would never willingly to choose to live in this part of the city if it weren't necessary to the training and if we were staying for more than a year.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the home they put us in or the neighborhood, but the surrounding area is apparently "sketchy" compared to other places in D.C. And honestly? That seems to be a thing with almost *all* military bases. They're almost always in the worst parts of town.. or have a lot of crime related things happening right outside the "gate" as it were.
I don't mind the appearances of such places, but the random string of shootings (including the tragic death of a 6 year old) right as we arrived kind of put a damper on walking around or walking safely and surely to the metro from where I live.
Though, I have to say.. because I live here I finally saw a biking elliptical in the wild. Those things are so weird. Never thought I'd see a person using one seriously! And he wasn't too far away from where I live (but the sidewalks where he was were less in need of repair than the ones here).
I always see people riding these and doing that weaving (like going around traffic cones on an obstacle course type way) and am always afraid they're going to hit me straight on.1 -

What even happens in mfp jail? Can you post? Can you look at pretty pictures of food? And, if you can, are you forced to silently drool instead of being supportive by posting how delicious it looks and why in the hell are you torturing me this way???0 -

She's been paying taxes for years and years on 10 acres, according to the town she lives in. BUT her acreage has now been measured as 4.5 acres. The town did take some to make the road wider but not that much. She went to a lawyer and asked about getting restitution for all the years she was essentially paying taxes for someone else. Lawyer says nope, sorry, SOL.
Anybody ever hear of this before?? Absurd, if you ask me.2 -

The town did take some to make the road wider but not that much. She went to a lawyer and asked about getting restitution for all the years she was essentially paying taxes for someone else. Lawyer says nope, sorry, SOL.
Anybody ever hear of this before?? Absurd, if you ask me.
Did they do a new survey when she decided to sell and it came up different than the original survey?
She needs to find a different lawyer.2 -

The Title to the land was clouded when she purchased it and the error keeps going unless a Title Attorney goes to the courthouse, pulls all the docs on that property and finds the mistake.
Once found he has to do his best to
“Clear Title” then all will be right.
A lot of times the chain of Title is so messy it’s impossible to untangle.

She's looked into a surveyor but it costs more money than she can afford. The reason she found this out is because someone bought the property next to her and pointed out some of it wasn't her land. I don't know the specifics but I told my sister that her friend definitely needs to get a new lawyer. Something isn't right. 3 -

Thanks for this info; I'll pass it on and see if it helps her. She put her house on the market, thought she had an instant sale but then ended up with this issue. The realtor's ad states 10 acres, +/-.
She's been living there for probably 50 years, lost her dh within the past year and now needs to sell. 3 -
