Less Alcohol ~ AUGUST 2021 ~ One Day At A Time

Boy, I hear you people talking about saving treasures and things you enjoy........I joined MFP 4 years ago when I was a miserable glutton. I had to clean my mothers house out ( 1 hour away) after her move into assisted living and then her death. My mom had all of the treasures from her parents (aunt didn’t want to clutter her house up with it all) I would ask my sister what she wanted and she didn’t want to clutter her house up. So, I hauled it all to my house, put it in my garage and on pallets in the side yard, covered with a tarp, and went through everything. I drank soooooo much alcohol and ate anything I wanted while I was dealing with it all. Finally I joined MFP to lose weight and get control of my chaos. Jump two years ahead and I had to pack our house up to move. I liked doing that; what ever I saved from my mom and did not use, I got rid of. I was able to reorganize all things. To make the packing more pleasant, I would be drinking beer and listening to music. When ever I have a miserable job to do, I am usually drinking......which is why I like this MFP link.7

I kept up my usual Friday night routine of polishing off the wine bottle. This morning I put in a half hour of bodycombat cardio and half hour of body pump and hopefully sweated out Friday night toxins. I did feel toxic. It's been years since I had red wine and now I remember why.
AF weekend for me!
I get what you mean @AR10@50 about getting control of one's chaos. Sometimes chaos falls into our lap unexpectedly and when it does, my stamina and energy and resolve go out the window. It takes effort to recalibrate.
@Lilylady3k nice picture and you guys are always having fun! I need to buy me a legit paella pan and get cookin'!
Market was sold out of Kevita kombucha zero cal lemon/ginger, it must be the good one because all the other flavors were filled up!5 -
@globalhiker - The class in Spain we used a real paella pan however for this class in Houston they used a cast iron pan. It worked really well!
Oh and I know the lemon Kevita kombucha goes quick ... I like the less sweet drinks and it has fewer calories than the fruity ones.4 -

I am continuing with my usual goal, 16-20 AF days for the month, diary style
Friday Aug 13 - Drinks. Friday the 13th!! I had intentions to be AF, but just wasn't. Had an awesome day at another lake. Photos to come.
Saturday Aug 14 - AF - I am at about 50% this month so far, kind of like last month where it was top-loaded with drinks days.
Sunday Aug 15 - AF - Schedule change and I have the day off tomorrow - this sometimes signals that it would be a good time to have drinks. I think that with working as much as i did all through the spring when days off didn't exist, I became very self-indulgent once they appeared and I knew that I actually had the next day off. Still a good idea for me not to drink if I have work the next day. Refrained today, more for my waistline than any other reason : - )
Monday Aug 16 - AF - I was up in Kimberley hanging out with my guitar player and bass player. They were having beers and I was offered, but had to drive back to Cranbrook and have a split shift tomorrow, so refrained. Smoky up there too, but seemed a tad less bad with all of the trees pumping out oxygen. Burning eyes are the norm around here.
Tuesday Aug 17 - AF - Long busy day, a drink would have been nice, but I have to get up in around 6 hours, so AF probably until Friday.
Wednesday Aug 18 - 2 drinks. It was not a planned drinks day at all, but I was finished work at 3, worked in the garden until 6, and then really enjoyed a couple.
Thursday Aug 19 - AF - Planned Mojitos with a friend tomorrow evening.
Friday Aug 20 - Mojitos- Mojito mint and Chocolate mint. Very yummy. Possible drinks with other friends Saturday afternoon (day off)
Saturday Aug 21 - Drinks - Basically started at noon with boozy coffees. Very tiny amounts of very many things, tried so many combinations. Drizzly day, day off, and tomorrow off too. Had a nice visit with some friends who came over. It was so lovely. I have a tenant starting September 1st, so actually staying inside for a change was very pleasant - I was cognizant that I won't have the place to myself soon. Planning a few AF days soon, had no desire to be AF today.
Rolling total: 11AF days out of 21 days7 -
Okay, I have been gone from here all week, but keeping alcohol out of the house, so I'm on track. Semester starts on Monday and I'm in the mad scramble to get ready.

@Stockholm_Andy - love the vacation pix! I need to put that on my bucket list!9 -
Oh my gosh all the photos are wonderful now that I am catching up from a crazy week.
I had intended to have off from Aug. 21-29. I started telling clients this weeks ago. Then something snow balled and what happened yesterday? (supposed 1st day off) WORKED putting in a new garden planting for an older gentleman.
So I am just about to get in my jeep to leave and he asks if I'd mind taking a look at his "other" house property, because it might need some of my garden help in the future. I should have pushed in my clutch and tore out of there in reverse. NOPE....I agreed to take a peek at it on my way home.
Have you ever watched one of those scary movies where the camera pans up an over grown driveway to a house that is over grown with vines and plant matter? That was my encounter.
Oh yeah, sure.....week off .....NOT!
Did manage 5 days straight of AF after my drink took a drink last Monday. I know it was ONLY 1 more than what my goal for the day of 2 was. But that is how bad habits reform for me, by letting my guard down. Back on track.6 -
@MissMay - Curious if your DH is back working again or if he has joined you in garden rehabs? Sounds like this latest overgrown house could use the extra hands! Good luck in tackling & taming it.

So we're designing a new kitchen layout which will open up the house even more than it is (den, dining & kitchen) but I'll lose much of my storage as we get rid of walls. Currently I have 37 cabinets and 17 drawers in the kitchen not including all the cabinets and closet in the laundry room. They are all overflowing since I do entertain a lot. My job these next couple of weeks is to decide keep, give away, toss, or move to a better location in the house.6

Only one glass of wine yesterday, and I really wasn’t that into it. Could have done without it. I enjoyed my faux Cosmo much better- club soda, sparkling lemonade ans a Luxardo cherry, of course in my pretty martini glass. So much better!
Made great progress on the weeding, and planned to finish today, but it’s raining due to Henri, so I probably need to finish later this week. Bummer! I still need to trim bushes and edge- neither of which I know how to do!6 -

There's only been one day so far that I Really wanted to drink. Two days until my presentation and five til my big interview! Not worried about staying dry til then.
As of this morning, I've skipped approximately 11-35 drinks, and saved between $66-211, and 2800-8200 calories based roughly on some of my good and bad weeks in the last few months. Seems crazy when I put it this way especially with how little I've actually wanted to drink.11 -
Wow so much going on with everyone!
Yesterday I had family over, just a total of 5. But these are always an all day event. Starting around 1pm and lasting usually until 7-9pm. I made pasta that I used in my lasagna, salad, garlic bread and for desert...my mom slipped us all a few York peppermint patties. Then we headed outside and played 'corn hole' and bocci ball before heading back in to play card games. All and all it was a fun time of laughs and jokes. But we also opened several bottles of wine and I had a few glasses.
This month has not been a good month for me and this journey. I only hope that September will be much better.
@MissMay that second house sounds like a nightmare! Worse than my yard.
@lilawolf congrats on your 'skipping' alcohol this month. Good luck on your interview
back later7 -
After doing Dry July without any problems I have really struggled to have any AF days this month. As soon as my OH suggests we share a bottle of wine my willpower seems to go out the window. I need to check in here every morning & will from now on. Today I am going AF!10

2 glasses of wine unplanned but wonderful with the 82 Queen's Charleston, SC shrimp & grits recipe. Then an evening walk.5

Went to log in to my drinking app and they have retired that part of their website. Disbelief- panic - anger struck me all at once.
How about a heads up before you shut it down?? So I could at least take a pic of my monthly drink calender and fill it in by printing it off.
They are supposed to introduce a new app sometime this week and SUPPOSEDLY it will transfer all your past apps info into the new one when you log in. Let's hope so. I have less drinking tallies in there since 2018. 😡
Can you imagine if this happened in MFP? NO COMMUNITY????😱
ANOTHER night AF here. 6 consecutive.7 -
@Lilylady3k my husband was not taking off work from his job this week, only I was. But that ship has sailed. And no he never helps me in my line of work, not his thing.4
-
August goal - at least 2 AF days for every 1 drinking day (So 21 AF and 10 drinks days max). On the drinks days I plan to have no more than 2.
Well, I had a crappy last week. I wasn't going to post and decided that wasn't going to get my anywhere. Alcohol for 6 straight days (2 drinks each day) and not proud of it. I was feeling down, but that should be a reason to stay AF rather than to drink. Lesson learned - if I feel like having drinks I should log on here first!
First 2 weeks of August
8/1 - 8/14 8 AF, 6 drinking days
8/15-8/22 1 AF, 7 drinking days
Total Month-to date: 9 AF 13 drinking days
Going to have to revise my goal to more AF than drinking days for the month again. Flying out to Arizona tomorrow with my mom, staying a few days then driving a vehicle back to South Dakota via Santa Fe, NM where my son, DIL and granddaughter live.
Have a great Monday!

Happy Monday is here! Time to kick off a brand new week and make my life better than last week. AF this weekend resulted in a cheery mood.
Goal this week to get get better at infusing positive energy with my work colleagues. Some of them have been zapping my energy and happiness with their negativity and bad behaviors. Then I absorb that stress and it just deteriorates me to the point where midweek and end of week I can't take it anymore and just want to drink away those bad feelings.
I can't run away from them all yet, in fact, I think all workplaces no matter where have people from time to time who are challenging. I have to learn. I can influence them or at least try.6 -
Again the Beck Diet Solution messaging hits a note for our less alcohol thread.
Monday Motivation: People often say, "Three months from now, you'll thank yourself for being on track today." But guess what? TOMORROW you'll thank yourself. TONIGHT, when you go to bed, you'll thank yourself. The good feelings from being in control/being on track start almost immediately!6 -
Nice hearing about everyone's weekend. We had a quiet lazy one. I thought we were going to the lake, but DH didn't want to so we lounged around Saturday planning a trip to Italy. DH bought cheap flights direct to Rome. Considering the ongoing pandemic, I have no idea if we will be able to travel as planned, but I do know this: if we plan nothing we will go nowhere. A while back he asked if I could go anywhere, where would it be off the top of my head. Without hesitation I responded Mallorca-Valencia-Barcelona. (So I was especially interested in @Stockholm_Andy's photos!) I allowed maybe also adding Marrakesh depending on how much time we had. He said that sounded complicated; what about Italy? TBH, I think the Stanley Tucci series really got to him. Anywhoo, Italy it is.
Sunday we peeled & seeded 1-1/9 bushel of hatch green chiles. I think that's 25-26 lbs. It takes 2+ exhausting hours standing elbow-to-elbow at the kitchen sink, but we stocked the freezer and will enjoy them for a whole year. I'm so glad to have someone with whom to share that task. After finishing we had a margarita. I know what you mean, @Womona, about sometimes enjoying a mocktail just as much as an alcoholic drink. After the margarita, which I did enjoy, I squeezed a lime in my glass and added a splash of OJ (because I had some in the fridge from making an orange tart my mom wanted for her birthday) and topped it off with Fresca. It was a pretty good mock marg, and that's coming from one who is insufferably picky about margaritas. I can honestly say I enjoyed it as much as the real thing. Cheers!
DH is no longer AF for August, but he's pretty mellow. We split a bottle of wine Friday and another one Saturday and then a margarita Sunday. Well, mellow compared to some of our past exploits anyway. I would be happy with this level of weekly consumption if we could make it our new normal.4 -
@ahoy_m8 - I know! I've been wanting to plan a trip to Italy after watching the Stanley Tucci series, too. Enjoy your experience and go with the flow sounds wonderful right now ... any place but home LOL!4

I WILL NOT allow the frustrations of my day to affect my AF resolve!
My goal for the week is fewer than 1000 calories of alcohol. I plan on saving them up for Friday and Saturday6 -
August goal - at least 2 AF days for every 1 drinking day (So 21 AF and 10 drinks days max). On the drinks days I plan to have no more than 2. ***Revised Goal for August - More AF days than drinks days ***
First 2 weeks of August
8/1 - 8/22 9 AF, 13 drinking days
8/23 AF

I went out for a family lunch on Friday but only had 1 glass of wine (sparkling shiraz) which was lovely and I wasn't tempted to continue into the night, which I normally would have.
Went AF on Saturday but had some wine/vodka (not mixed together I might add) on Sunday.
But I had it because I really wanted it/fancied it and not just because it was 'the weekend' which I would normally do.
1/8 - Wine

20/8 - Wine
21/8 - AF
22/8 - Wine/Vodka

Happy Monday (or Tuesday as it is in other parts of the World) to All. Day 23 AF for me and I had an enjoyable weekend doing house projects and then a long hike Sunday. I can't recall who suggested I look for good AF beer at one of the many local craft breweries here, but I found a winner! Hoppy, flavorful, and less than 100 cal. 'Strapless IPA' will now be in my rotation. Now if they could just figure out AF wine! Seriously, I tried many this month and all we're not drinkable, even the ones that cost the same as the real stuff.
@Cindyk4919 I had not thought of framing my drinks goals in terms of total calories. As we approach September and I figure out what my approach will be I'll keep that in mind.
@Healthymumlife I've actually had vodka and wine mixed together before, and it's not as bleh as you would think! @Stockholm_Andy will recognize this-- I travel often for business and was in Linköping during December and very much enjoyed glögg, a mulled wine with vodka, cardamom, almonds and raisins. Yum! Looking forward already to the Holiday Season because of it!6 -

I've just found a AF beer I like. Like you, I've tried a few wines and fortunately found a sparkling white that I like but many taste too much like apple juice for me. I'd love to find a sparkling rose or a shiraz but I haven't yet .. the ones I tried tasted like drinking black current juice and I'd rather not waste my calories on them.2
