Happy late birthday @martaindale!
@quilteryoyo sorry about your GI issues. Those suck, especially during a run. Impressed that you got your 12 miles in after that. You're ready for your HM! Hope things settle down a little for you soon and you can catch your breath.2 -
6.2 miles this morning. If you saw my Garmin data you would be able to tell by my stride length that I was in pain the whole time. As much as I want to, I really don't think I can run two days in a row. This old body just needs at least 1 day to recover. So sad.

Sorry about the pack @RunsOnEspresso wish I had some advice, but unfortunately packs seem to be just like shoes.
Didn't run today, doing a little taper before that Saturday night 10k I signed up for last minute. I feel like I'm gonna need all the break I can get to try to get a respectable (for me) time 😆 Also the running club posts our time results on Facebook, and the other 2 club members who are running are both speedy, haha.
In other news, a bird apparently got eaten in the yard. I sent my airplane-loving kid to investigate, and when I checked with him later for an update on what happened, I was informed that "Well, due to the absence of the fuselage, it was impossible to determine the exact cause..." and the entire report sounded like one of his plane crash investigations. He did, however, assure me that it was not one of MY birds (who come to my feeder), not sure how he could tell though. I'm not a fan of the neighborhood cats. I told them to kill the MOLES, not my birds!6 -
Last night I had a 1.5 mile walk with Kody followed by a 6.5 mile run. I even run up a couple of the bigger hills, and half-way up the biggest hill. Steady progress.
I also did the Myrtl routine for the second night in a row. Perhaps I'll make this a habit after all.
I'm now at 22/80 miles for September and 97/450 miles for 2021

I felt great this morning, I’m considering finishing up my September half tonight because the weather is supposed to be great. I would have tried to finish this morning but I had a meeting.
Great idea on just freezing water in the bladder @polskagirl01 and @shanaber – duh how simple LOL
@katharmonic glad you posted the pictures, I love to see them, it always reminds me just how beautiful this country is.
@RunsOnEspresso I don’t think you can be too picky, you want it to be comfortable for long periods of time, if it’s not while standing still how can it be while running.
@johnisrunning ouch on the toenail
@7lenny7 great pictures – weird puffball

Golf instead of running again today for regular Thursday league. Hare pressed to remember the last time I had two non running days in a row.
@quilteryoyo Hope your stomach issues get better soon.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

@martaindale Sorry about the scorpion bite. I have never lived where they were. I think I would be terrified. Even so, I would be tempted to see how many were scurrying about in my yard at night. Can you treat the yard to keep them out? I'm assuming not, or everyone would do it.
Thanks for the playlist suggestions. @7lenny7 I love what you did something similar for you half marathon.
@WhatMeRunning I love my bone conduction earphones. Maybe you could go to a store that carries them so you could try them out before purchasing. I am amazed at how clear they are and love that I can still hear everything around me.
@RunsOnEspresso Sorry about the hydration vest issues. I recently bought a one by Nathan that I really like and haven't found any irritation points yet. It's supposedly made for a woman's shape. I hope you find one you like.
@Scott6255 I hope your legs are feeling better by now.
@kgirlhart I hope your hip pain goes away soon. Sounds like you have a good handle on what to do for it. Nice running. I like straight A's too.
@Orphia Sorry to see that CoVID has been so hard on you. I hope you can get your energy back.
@johnisrunning Nice "easy" run on Sunday. I can't imagine running a HM in under 2 hours, let alone at an easy pace. I'm aiming for 3 hours for my first one coming up in a week and a half.

@katharmonic I hope your weekend got better for you.
@penguinmama87 Great job on the 10K!
@Scott6255 That is weird about getting hungry during your run. I usually don't and am rarely hungry after, but try to eat something anyway. I hope you figure it out. I hate feeling hungry when I know I can't eat.
@sweetdaisy13 Sorry about your son's arm. I hope it heals quickly and isn't too painful for him. Good luck with your ultra on Saturday!
@martaindale Great job on your runs. Love all of the wildlife you are seeing.3 -
Heyyyyyy everybody!
Had a few minutes at work so thought I would pop in and say hello and see how you are all doing. I've been good - training my face off, working, raising kids. Not much has changed except an increase in intensity and the super fun teen years with my daughter.
I have a lot of racing scheduled but we'll see what does and doesn't get cancelled.
How is everybody? Hanging in there and continuing to push yourselves, I hope.
Love and miss you!7 -
Good afternoon everyone. I started back with running. On Tuesday I tested the waters by running indoors by jogging in place. My Fitbit said I had gone 4.3 miles. Had no discomfort. This morning I went for a run outside and it was a little tender but I ran and but the pain stopped when I went for awhile. I stretched my hips when I got home and laid with cold on my hip. It’s my left side and everything seems a little tight. I’m going to monitor it and instead of doing cross training on the resting day I’m going totally rest it. I will try to attempt another run on Saturday. If it’s still uncomfortable I will definitely call for an appointment with a sports medicine doctor. I’m thinking it’s either a muscle strain or bursitis because it happens when I extend the leg and it doesn’t happen when I am running in place.
Miles run
9/07 4.3 miles run
9/09 4.4 miles run
Total miles run 8.7 miles with 31.30 miles left to go

@RunsOnEspresso just thinking out loud here, but some packs are more adjustable than others. At least some Ultimate Direction and Nathan packs (probably many others) can be adjusted on the sides (under arms), but also the straps across your front can be tightened/loosened OR moved up and down, which is amazing if you're out and something starts rubbing wrong. Do you have runner friends or a store nearby who have packs you can try on? It sounds like you've really researched it, too. I found YouTube reviews helpful when I was looking.3

Sept totals: 20.5/70 miles
9/2: 3.1 miles
9/3: 4.1 miles
9/5: 3.1 miles
9/6: 3 miles
9/8: 4.1 miles
9/9: 3.1 miles
This morning when I went out, it was not quite as nice as yesterday morning but still pretty nice. I tried pushing the pace down just a little while keeping the perceived effort in the moderate range. I managed to negative split the run with an average pace around 20 sec/mile faster than I have been doing this summer and had my HR mostly in zone 4, maybe 20% zone 5 and even a little sliver in zone 3. So, with a slightly harder perceived effort my HR was lower overall than it has been at the easiest effort I could muster. The temps alone definitely affect me.
I also noticed that garmin stratifies my HR zones slightly differently than strava and garmin tends to trend towards more time in higher zones when comparing the same runs in strava. Hmm. I'm going to have to take some time to dive into that at some point because the target zones should be standardized. I haven't manually edited either of them. I will say that the strava zones fall more in line with my perceived effort. Garmin always looks like I am working way harder than I feel like I am.
Without a chest strap, I assume I have to take my HR data with a grain of salt because I cannot account for cadence lock (which I think happens sometimes) and times where maybe the watch isn't contacting as well as it should be. But, it still bugs me to see discrepancies between garmin and strava for the exact same data and it makes it harder for me to know how to interpret the information.
@Camaramandy648 Good to see you here! I have been following along on strava. Great job getting those runs done!
@julieannegannon Sounds like you may be on the road to recovery. Hope a little more rest will take care of any residual tenderness.
@Scott6255 I guess I never realized you didn't run on consecutive days. I know there are people in this group that do 2 runs in a day and I have never understood how people do that! On the very rare occasion that I have to run at night one day then again the following morning, it is a painful slog. I need a solid 20ish hours between runs.5 -
Okay scratch my last entry I am having pain now just sitting around. I got an appointment on Monday with a sports medicine doctor. Not going to mess with it anymore.14

Oh I know, this will be my 3rd vest. The problem is I have specific needs and there's only so many vests that have said options. I looked at a local running store and they only had one option that would work and only in one size which even adjusted all the way was too big.
The second one I ordered I did not like where the pockets were located. It felt awkward and uncomfortable despite making several adjustments.0 -
Here is what I was trying to post last night and wasn't working from my phone (app or web). Shoe porn.

Inching along here with a short treadmill run before strength training today. This weekend is not going to be good either, I'm afraid.
@Camaramandy648 hey! It's been a while. Glad to hear you are doing well. I'm sure you've been putting in some serious miles.
@julieanngalinec I'm sorry about the pain! Glad you got an appointment to get it figured out and hopefully on the mend soon.

@ContraryMaryMary I hope the hip gets better soon...and the lockdown gets lifted. Great job with the walking.
Love the pictures of your hike @katharmonic !
Nice run @kgirlhart . Glad your hip is feeling better.
Happy belated birthday to your DH @shanaber. Two celebrations are better than one.
@rheddmobile I think you are doing great, considering everything. You're current pace would be a huge PR for me! I'm sure the speed will come back once you can run more and it cools down.
Nice running @Scott6255 ! Glad the weather is a bit better for you.
@RunsOnEspresso No. You are not being picky. You need to be able to be comfortable in the vest. I hope it feel better on a trial run. Nice shoe porn!
@johnisrunning I'm glad running on the toe didn't hurt. Enjoy your vacation. I always have good intentions on vacation, but they don't go very far.
Happy Belated Birthday @martaindale ! I hope you enjoy camping.
@7lenny7 Sounds like you had a great weekend. Seeing the eagles fighting over the fish must have been something to see. Love the seagulls all lined up. I have never seen a puff ball. I love mushrooms, but have never eaten any from the woods. I'm too afraid I'll eat a poisonous one. That thing is huge. Hope you find a way to cook it that you enjoy. Nice run today.
Thanks @Scott6255 Sorry your run was painful. I hope a day of rest helps.
@polskagirl01 Good luck with your 10K! Love the way your son described the bird carnage.
Thanks @Tramboman I feel fine now. It seemed to be a one day thing.
Glad to see you pop in @Camaramandy648 ! Glad you are doing well.
@julieannegannon Glad you were able to run some without pain. I hope resting does the job, but glad you plan to see the doctor if it continues to act up. Sorry it is hurting just sitting around. I hope it isn't anything major.
I think I am finally caught up again. I hope I can stay that way this time, but you never know.

I worked from 7:30 - 2 today. I stopped my mom's to talk and do a couple of things for her. I was really tired when I got home at 3:15 but made myself go out for my run since I haven't ran since Monday. The weather was great for that time of day - 73°F, 41% humidity, and a 9 mph breeze. I was supposed to do a mixed interval run, but decided I wanted to run on the driveway and really didn't want to try to do such a structured run. So, instead, I ran one mile easy, second mile I ran fartleks on the relatively flat portion of the driveway, and then ran another mile easy. Splits were 13:30, 12:25, and 13:42 min/mile. Not horrible for me. Elevation gained was 919 feet.
Monthly totals under the spoiler.1 Sept - 0.00 miles Ran - 1.0 mile Walk - Driveway laps
2 Sept - 3.00 miles Ran - 1.0 mile Walk - Mixed interval run in the morning on the rural road
3 Sept - 0.00 miles Ran - 1.0 mile Walk - Treadmill at 9:44 pm, after my Aunt's visitation and funeral - also played tennis that morning
4 Sept - 0.00 miles Ran - 1.0 mile Walk - Driveway laps in the evening, after my Aunt's burial that morning
5 Sept - 0.00 miles Ran - 1.0 mile Walk - Driveway laps after church and before lunch
6 Sept - 12.0 miles Ran - 1.0 mile Walk - PR for distance
7 Sept - 0.00 miles Ran - 1.0 mile Walk - Treadmill at 8:20 pm after work and weed eating mom's lawn
8 Sept - 0.00 miles Ran - 1.0 mile Walk - Driveway laps after 2 hours of doubles tennis
9 Sept - 3.00 miles Ran - 1.0 mile Walk - Driveway laps - Fartleks during the middle mile
18 miles Ran - 9 mile Walked - No goal set for this month8 -
September Goal: 95 Miles
9/1: 4.05 miles
9/2: 5.51 miles
9/5: 7.51 miles
9/7: 4.11 miles
9/8: 4.31 miles
9/9: 5.51 miles
31/95 miles completed for September
The plan for today was 5 miles at HM pace or 48 minutes at average pace of 9:30. I knew I could get the 5 miles, but wasn't too confident about the pace. Between the heat and my cranky hip I have been pretty slow lately. The plan actually said between 8:55 and 10:05 min/mile. I was hoping I could get around 10 minutes. It was much cooler today which helped a lot, but I still came in at 10:37 min/mile and I ran 5.5 miles. I still felt good about it though. It was faster than I have been lately.
My mom called at lunch and said she had fallen while taking out the trash. So I ended up in the ER with her. I thought she might have fractured her cheek, but the scan came back good. She had a small fracture under her nose, but her cheek and jaw were good. They did see a "very tiny bleed" on the scan so they wanted to repeat the scan in 8 hours. So we had to wait until 10 for a second scan, but that one was good and the bleeding has resolved so she is coming home. It has been a really long day. But it could have been a lot worse.
2021 Races:
4/24/21: Run For The Children 10K PR 55:46:28.
11/6/21: Run For 57th AHC Half Marathon

@quilteryoyo Your driveway cracks me up! My husband and I hiked twice the distance in (for around here) fairly hilly terrain, and you got 3x the elevation change!
@kgirlhart I hope your mom continues to feel better!
Today was a run day but after a hard downhill run on Tuesday then lifting heavy weds my legs felt a little beat up so we hiked instead. Got out on the Tour de Wolf which is primarily used by mountain bikes - we had to leap off the trail out of the way several times - ground is baked hard as concrete right now! Many beautiful butterflies and wildflowers everywhere, plus Osage oranges all over the trails, which would give you quite a start if you accidentally stepped on one! We usually have blackberries at this time of year but it looked like they had been killed by the heat, the ones we saw were shriveled and dead.
About as far from the trailhead as it’s possible to get there’s an old graveyard from the plantation which used to be on the property. Vandals have broken the gravestones and taken them away but the bases are still there. I used to know who was buried there and when but can’t recall, I think the dates are 1850s or so. Nearby is a rusted out old car - in the middle of nowhere, with no road to get to it - apparently there was a road, decades ago, but there are no signs of one now! Anyway, the car has been there since the 1960s I think, but only this past year someone has spray painted it “Elvis, the King of Rock & Roll”, and put a welcome sign, a warning sign, and a Christmas wreath on it! Fancy!5
