@rheddmobile, @polskagirl01, those flowers are salvia. They come in every shade of blue and purple you can think of (also red) and are a firm favourite of mine. So hard to find a true blue flower, but salvias deliver all summer long. Mine are sky blue and the same royal blue as @rheddmobile’s photo and are just poking there way up (they’re perennials) after a winter of snoozing.3

I have a monthly question
I know we kinda talked about this before but it's been a while.
Favorite things & Funny socks
I got this thing for socks. I don't wanna wash them or change them. What if they get lost? or don't fit right? I am loving my new swift wick cycling socks. I am also a pen hoarder of sorts. I have a carousel sorted by wavelength (colour). Highlighters, sharpies, gel pens, fav pencils... It's not a collection of all pens, they are MY pens. I sort my socks from the meh drawer to the yay! drawer. And I'm okay with a mess if it is my mess; which is just loosely organized.
How about ya'll?2 -
I had never seen toe socks until I met my wife. She had a thing for toe socks, would only wear toe socks, and the more colorful or obnoxious the more she loved them! It was something I thought was cute about her, but I definitely could not understand why she wanted to wear toe socks. Then I got an offer for a free pair of Injinji toe socks as part of a race packet and BOOM, I loved toe socks (but only for running, of course, otherwise that stuff was strictly for weirdos...don't tell my wife I said that). Well, since walking around in running shoes full time as part of the plantar fasciitis treatment plan, and looking for as much support in general as I can get, those dang Injinji socks have turned into something I have worn 24x7 over the last couple months. Thank goodness I ordered all those pairs of toe socks to go with all those running shorts, etc! So call me a weirdo, but I wear toe socks full time now and probably won't ever go back to those lesser socks that didn't even have the forethought in mind to account for the toes (cheap crap if you ask me)!8

Beautiful day to run last night. Temperature was low 60 degrees with a slight breeze. I ran 4.15 miles and ran 23 seconds per mile faster than the last time I ran. I tried to tempo run but in reality, I ran faster after the first mile, which always sucks and just tried to run evenly. I noted that I wasn't leg weary but my lungs hurt after 3 miles....some coughing, but taking deep breaths were an effort. I tried singing to the music at times just to make sure that I wasn't going too fast.
The plan is still to run 7 miles on Sunday. I think that I am going to try to run a couple of miles, then slow to walk until in fat burning range, then run, repeat until 7 miles. I think I might do something like that on race day if it works out. I should be tired when I run on Sunday, having completed 2 twelve hour shifts at the hospital.
@rheddmobile How scary that the mass shooting was at a Kroger's where you normally shop. We have a Kroger's here at Indianapolis. It is a huge store. Your poor mother...I am sure she was frantic.4 -
Better to be smart than sorry @RunsOnEspresso ! Glad you are feeling better today.
@polskagirl01 Cool mushroom pictures. I'm with you. I leave the hunting to those who know what they are doing.
Hahaha @WhatMeRunning !
@ereck44 Nice run today. Glad everyone is getting cooler temperatures for a while..well, everyone in this hemisphere. Sounds like a sound plan for your run on Sunday. Lack of sleep really affects how I feel on a run, I've found.
I bought a couple pair of socks that each have half a smiley face, so when you put your feet together, they are happy feet. Sometimes I wear them when I work in the baby room at daycare because we don't wear our shoes in there. I think I like them more than the babies do. LOL
I am a pen hoarder. If someone is giving away a free pen, I'll take it. LOL I have been a little bit bummed lately, though, because I do have a couple of favorite pens that have run out of ink and I can't find just the ink refills anywhere. I haven't looked on-line. Probably can there, but they aren't in any of the stores I frequent.
I didn't post yesterday. Nothing real interesting. I did work at daycare, got home at 6, changed clothes, went down and did the push mowing at mom's, got home at 7:30, and went down and did a mile walk on the treadmill for the streak.
Today, I was able to sleep in a bit, as I didn't have to be at work until after my 10 am tennis match. Today's group were extra talkative, so not a whole lot of playing going on, but I enjoyed it. I got off of work 30 minutes before I had planned, so, when I got home, I did my mile on the driveway.3 -
I have warm socks for when it's cold; thin socks for when I want to go fast; compression socks for when my calves hurt; and soft socks for when my feet are sore.6

I only wear socks because I absolutely have to when running or in the winter. They serve me well enough but I don't love them. I do appreciate thigh high socks in the winter for wearing under skirts; IMO they work better than leggings or tights, or you can even layer them over if it's very cold.
I am kind of an organizing nut. I'm not a minimalist, but I like well-ordered spaces where I can see what I need and get it without disturbing anything else, and put it away the same.7 -

been plagued with headaches. love it when the weather changes. I really do, just hate the headaches. Dh had eye surgery the 22nd and a follow up the 23rd, 2 hours away... kinda put a crimp in my kb adventures and violin practice.5 -
I love wearing socks and I'm always happy when the weather gets cooler and it's time to ditch the sandals and wear socks with shoes and socks around the house. Love the coziness of fuzzy socks while lounging around. Running socks I prefer my Balega socks and have several pairs. I hate thin socks for running. Finding a matching pair of socks though seems to be a challenge for me lately. Which just tells you that I'm lazy about laundry and folding and putting things away. But it makes me CRAZY to find one of each pair of socks but no two alike.

Not a very long run today because I'm going hiking tomorrow. Which means I won't run tomorrow either.
I had higher hopes for this month, but here we are. In positive news though, it is an absolutely gorgeous fall day today. I'm excited to get to the mountains tomorrow and I'm hoping it a) won't rain and b) there will be more leaves turning there.
6 -
@katharmonic It's a beautiful fall day here today too. The leaves haven't started to turn here yet. Enjoy your hike tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures.2
-
I wasn't going to do 40 km this week... but after Thursday, I was over 30 and that's just two 5k's over 3 days, so... yeah. Yesterday I went out first thing and was tired, but 5k wasn't too bad. Today I went in the afternoon and tried to incorporate as many hills as possible, also at an easy pace. I think some stretching and rolling will be a good finish to this day.7
-
Today is a monumental day in my return to form. I did my first double digit run since May 13, 2017. I was 5 months removed from surgery for testicular cancer (100% cancer free now) and trying to balance running and surfing and it just wasn't working. That was my last significant run of the last significant week until my (Don't call it a) comeback that started in mid July.
So, 10 miles @ 9:38 pace on the ATT. HR got a little higher than I wanted the second half of the run, but I'll take it.
I don't really care for shoes or socks. Given the choice, I'll be barefoot or in sandals. For running, I prefer very thin socks, no matter the time of year. My legs and feet really never get cold when running. I'll rock shorts into the low 20s, high teens. I do the laundry and socks are always paired before the go in the drawer. A place for everything and everything in its place.
90 out of 100 miles for the month.12 -
Congrats on the double digit run @CarsonSurfs! That's a great accomplishment after what you have been through.
@polskagirl01 I thought the same thing about those mushrooms. They look like a picture out of a children's story book. Great job on your mountain running and another 40k week.
@katharmonic enjoy your mountain hike tomorrow!3 -

@rheddmobile I’m glad you didn’t end up falling and getting hurt. Interesting history about the park. We have a trail similar a couple miles from my house everyone I know goes there, they must be on a different trail than me when I went I thought I was going to die. Awful. I did see about the shooting, horrible.
@swenson19d I don’t really have favorite things like that. I used to collect clowns and watches, but no more, I think at one point I had about 75 watches and only 2 wrists LOL. I do have a pen thing though, if I find one I like I’ll move heaven and earth to find them. Right now It’s the Pilot Easy Touch in fine blue ink, the local Staples doesn’t carry them anymore. Also if I use a pen someone and love it, I’ll take it, sorry not sorry. LOL @quilteryoyo we are kindered pen spirits LOL
My mom had a thing about socks, if you were at her house and it was cold she’d say you need some socks, and she give you a brand new pair of nice cotton socks. When she died I found an entire drawer of brand new in the package socks, she never wore this kind of sock. I realized it was her love language her way of making sure you were comfy in her house. About a month after she died a bunch of my friends and I went to dinner, I gave them all nice warm comfy socks and told them about my mom and that this was my way of telling them I loved them and thank you for being there for me after her death. Oh geez I’m emotional today, it’s 5 years today she passed. Damn I miss her and her socks LOL

8 miles today which was what was on the schedule. Guess I'm back from being glutened! It probably also helped that I drank coffee before, it was low 70s and very overcast. I saw more people outside than I have all summer combined LOL Let's hope this trend sticks around. I'm tired of 100+ degree days.
135/1747 -
@rheddmobile I am so glad you weren't shopping when the shooting occurred. I'm sure your mother was frantic. I loved the pictures of your run and I thought it was awesome that you as a treat you went somewhere cool to run.
@katharmonic I hope you have great weather for your hike tomorrow. I'm looking forward to your pictures.
@CarsonSurfs Congrats on the double digit run and on your amazing comeback.
@swenson19d I feel you on the headache. I'm so happy for the cooler weather, but fall is definitely allergy season for me. I woke up with a headache this morning (really just my cheeks and forehead).
I love the story of your mom and her socks @skippygirlsmom. My favorite running socks are Balegas. I do have some tie socks that my daughter gave me. I'll admit to wearing them with my flip flops if my feet get cold, but only at home, never in public.
.4 -
@WhatMeRunning i have toe socks for sandals, I got flip flops with a height adjustment on one side for my short leg. I’ve always loved the toe socks! I love being barefoot but with raynauds I’m forced to wear socks. They need to make some that are yard friendly, where the grass and leaves don’t stick to them forever.
Here’s Beary’s new fav thing It’s an ostrich or emu… Cori is a dud an won’t play romp & chomp with him. His fav fav things are snakes as some of y’all know. 2 in the house this week and a frog and a locust, and a grass hopper… least it not bunnies and rats like noodle brought in
Gotta pet favorite thing?
2 -
Nice running @polskagirl01 !
Congrats on your long run @CarsonSurfs ! Glad you are cancer free too!
Haha about the pens @skippygirlsmom ! We are indeed kindred spirits there. Don't you hate it when you find something you really like and the store quits carrying it!? That is a very sweet memory of your mom and what you did for your friends is touching and a great way to remember her. Hugs to you on the anniversary of her death.
Nice run @RunsOnEspresso . Glad you are feeling better.
@swenson19d Beary is so cute with his emu. Tippy has never really played with toys much. Her favorite things are to drink out of the water faucet and playing in the snow.

My neighbor had told mom he would help saw up the trees that he and dad had cut down last year. Today was the day he decided he could do it. He did all of the sawing. His two daughter's (in their early 30's, maybe) came to help too, as did me and mom. We helped manipulate the log chain and loaded most of the blocks of wood - all that we could lift. Some were too big for us. He also sawed down two other dead trees that were at risk of falling into my driveway and we cut part of them up. Still have some to go. We worked from 9 - 11 took an hour for lunch, and then worked from about 12 - 2. Once they all went home, I went back up and cleaned up some of the mess from off of the driveway and cut a couple of little limbs that the trees had torn off. I wound up with 2 Gator loads that I dumped.
My neighbor's goal is to fill this shed with wood for mom to burn by the end of October. Next job is to split all of the wood that is piled against the wall of the shed and outside of it.
Better picture of the biggest pieces, just to see how big they were
When I got done with all of that, I did my mile walk to keep the streak going. Didn't have energy for a run.

@Tramboman Love the evolution of your wood cutting/splitting over the years. I'm trying to talk mom into another form of heat, which we may do next year. Maybe replace one of the heaters for an oil heater and keep the other for back up, in case the power goes out. We'll see. Glad you had a great run this morning.

Got an email from virtualrunner.com saying I haven't uploaded my 10K run for the Guinness World record attempt. But I did it that same day and it shows up in my portal. Tried to do it again today and it says No valid runs available??? WTF?
13.1 miles this morning. Didn't look at my watch once (actually just couldn't bear to see how slow I was going). Just ran by effort. Tried to make it an easy long run. Goal mostly accomplished

Have you considered pellet stoves? We had one when we lived in PA and it worked well. And if you get a battery back up system for it, you never have to worry about power outages.2 -

31.1 for the week.

5 mile run wearing my Barefoot shoes, no knee problems at all and ran a faster pace than usual. Average pace of 8:57 per min with 265 feet of elevation.

I may not reach my milage goal this month, but will try and get close to it.
September:
74.2/100 miles
9,531/10,000 feet of elevation7
