Went to Running Club this evening. I don't get to go very often due to family and work commitments, but it was nice to run with people again.
7 miles, with some 1k sprints thrown in and an average pace of 8:29 min per mile.

@Teresa502 she was pretty calm when she called me about it. She said I made sure they knew I saw them. It's horrible that our kids, both male and female, have to be so careful all the time.4

Run group was a ladder workout tonight. 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1 minute intervals with 2 minutes recovery between on the way up and 90 seconds recovery on the way down. I don't like how dark it is in the later part of the workout now. It makes it feel really long.

@Teresa502 Glad you got your run in before the front blew in. The moon was beautiful this morning.
@sweetdaisy13 Yeah for running with people! Great pace!
@katharmonic Sounds like a tough workout. I don't like how quickly it is getting dark already either.3 -
So I signed up for a half marathon before i knew that i would sprain my toes, get covid, and getting very close to selling our 2nd house. 10 more days.
So on Tuesday I ran 5.57 miles. It was 76 degrees with 86% humidity. Again the first mile sucked. I glanced at my watch to see how far i ran, before it became more comfortable and noted 1.5 miles. I never reached the zone. My goal was 6 miles but the weather was overcast and thought that i would be lucky to get 5 miles in before it started raining hard. During the run i decided to split the difference. I noted that my legs felt okay but still felt some stress on his legs.
My plan is to run 4 miles tomorrow. Then 7 miles on Sunday, a short run of 2 miles on Thursday and then half marathon one week from Saturday. We will see what happens.
My friend and i took a long walk on Sunday and found a hurt chipmunk on the trail. She picked it up and it was bleeding from the nose. It was moving all extremities. We were pretty far from our cars. I told her that i was going to move it to the grass thinking its best chance to survive was to hide it in the grass away from dogs and bikes. Not sure if i did the right thing. It had the softest fur....I've never gotten that close to a chipmunk.
@skippygirlsmom I have also received friend requests from scantily clad women in sex poses. I just delete them as i get them. Lately i have been getting friend requests from people who are from foreign countries using block lettering...so strange...
I hope all have a geat week.10 -

@ereck44 Congrats on selling your house. Good luck with the HM. I just completed my first one, which had gone virtual. It was tough. Is this an in person race? I hope the chipmunk survived.

Got out this morning for 2.5 miles. I had hoped for 3 but my body isn't fully over the immune response. My hip and ankle joints are a bit cranky and still very fatigued.

Logging 2 today. I had to run last night due to my work schedule and then did my usual morning run today. The promised cold front blew in night before last and it was beautiful all day yesterday. I ran about 6pm and it was only 81F with a whopping 30% humidity. Amazing! Then this morning, I had my first run in the 50’s for this season, 58F to be exact. I love this weather.
Today, even though I ran last night my legs felt ok. So, since it was cooler I tried pushing the pace for my 5k to see how things felt. I averaged a 9:43 pace and managed to negative split! It was harder than that pace was at the end of last racing season but it felt good to push some and see what I could do. I definitely think some speed work will help that along and maybe, just maybe, I’ll have a new HM PR this year.
I think I need to sign up for a 5k too. I haven’t raced a 5k in a couple of years. Usually I opt for at least a 10k if I am going to pay for a race. I am signed up for the 5k as a part of the Houston HM in January but I don’t want to race that one since the HM is the next day and it is my goal race. There are an abundance of races in that distance, so I’ll have to find one for December or so and see how it goes.7 -

Congratulations on completing your first marathon. So excited for you! Did you have fun?
I have run at least 1 half marathon since 2014 until 2020. My last half was November 2019. I remember being very sick the week prior to the race ( I think that I had covid then....Lol) Also remember that it was cold and raining for the whole race. I have never run a virtual race although that was offered to me last year. I think October 2nd is an in person race. There is a date and time to pick up my packet and information about parking.
Thanks....i havent sold my house yet but expecting an offer today. Spent 2 months decluttering and cleaning. I am glad that part is over.
I too hope the chipmunk survives. It's nose was bleeding....i hope it was a superficial injury. I guess i could have taken it to a vet or wildlife place. Just didnt expect to encounter the little guy. I saw 2 chipmunks scampering the other day. Thankfully it's not an endangered species.
Will be running later in the day. Probably a tempo run at 4 miles.

I was just reading an article about running races you haven’t trained for, and they said to resist the impulse to try to get in one more last minute long run during the final week when you should be tapering, accept that your performance isn’t going to be optimal, and do the best you can. It sounds like you’re already pretty much doing this!
It sounds like you did the best you could for the poor little chipmunk. Assuming it had a brain injury there’s not such a thing as a chipmunk brain surgeon, so a vet would either wrap it in blankets and keep an eye on it, or put it to sleep. This way it got to be peaceful in a familiar place. And there’s the possibility that it just had a nosebleed and concussion and will recover.5 -
I am working this weekend, and hey it's Suunto's "Vertical Week", do I figured I should do my part and go to the mountains. Really, any excuse will do, as I love the mountains.
It's colder and very much Fall, so I needed more gear (light jacket, long sleeves, long tights, 2 buffs for my ears - one for the trip up, then switched to a dry one later, a winter hat for when I was sitting at the top, gloves which I did use briefly on the descent, because I got cold at the top, and my usual water and snacks). I followed the 11k route for my November race, but added on a 9k trip to my favorite mountain (via a couple of other peaks). Ended up with 20 km and 865 m elevation. It was mostly up, then down, with just a little bit of variation. I determined that the 3 hr time limit for the 11k route is totally doable.
Lots of pics:7 -

I didn't get a chance to update my run yesterday. @scott6255 I felt the same way about my run yesterday as you. I was so looking forward to the cool fall run and it wasn't really that great. It wasn't a bad run, just not as awesome as I had expected. The plan called for 4 miles in 40 minutes or 10:06 average pace. For some reason I was feeling slow. Usually when it's cool I am a little faster. And then at the end of my run I caught my toe on a curb and kind of tweaked my hip again. And it had finally started feeling better. I ended up with 4.75 miles. I was only about .25 miles from home, but I just walked. My hip was annoyed all day and I was thinking I should probably take a rest day today.
But when I got up I felt fine. I made a couple of laps around the living room while waiting for my coffee and the hip seemed OK. The plan called for 6 miles at HM pace of 9:14. I decided I was not going to do that but I would go out and see how I felt. At the very least I planned to walk a mile or two. So I started out slowly and felt ok so I kept running. I ended up with 5.4 miles at a very slow 12:12 pace. I would have liked to hit the full 6, but I got out later than I should have and didn't have time. So far my hip feels ok today so I am glad I went ahead and ran. It was another really nice morning and I hate to not run when it's cool like that. I was even a little chilly.
What a beautiful run @polskagirl01
I hope your stomach feels better soon @johnisrunning

I've started my search for a running coach. I reached out to 7 recommended by various people. I think it's going to be a tough choice as I've liked the ones I've heard back from already.6
-
I've been a bit quiet here lately - having the children and husband at home all day every day has made my life very busy. Good news, we've gone down a lockdown level - takeout food and coffee, and the builders can continue working on our new house. The only downside is the children can't go back to school yet, but there's only one more week of term so I shouldn't complain too much.
I've been running as per usual - definitely helps with the sanity levels - and today for the first time in months I feel like my body is back to normal (well, very near normal). All my aches and niggles have gone, and I have regained almost all the flexibility in my right hip - its amazing what focusing on form and technique will do for resolving problems. And it's amazing just how important core strength is, especially when it comes to speed and/or distance.
Also, I have discovered that roller skating (even very badly) is excellent cross training for runners!9 -
First run of autumn! Autumn weather arrived exactly on the solstice, last night was actually cold and today the temperature topped out in the 70s, perfect running weather.
My husband and I missed our last run because of thunderstorms, and then couldn’t make it up the next day because of needing to move a refrigerator ourselves - Lowe’s and Home Depot both had plenty of fridges in stock but no delivery until late October so we borrowed a dolly and a truck and went down there and got it. I feel like the staff were shocked to have to sell something! I feel like a boss moving a full sized fridge. But it did take all day to get the old one out, clean everything, and move the new one in.
So after that, we felt we had earned a treat, so we went to a new place to run. We had heard two years ago, back when people still saw other runners at races, that Memphis Track club held a trail race at T.O. Fuller state park, and that the trail was “really challenging,” with “lots of hills.” That sounded awesome, but the park is a good ways from our home, and we never got around to going there.
T.O. Fuller has an interesting history. First interesting fact, it was the first state park in Tennessee which black people were allowed to visit. Second interesting fact, a Mississippian Indian village with burial mounds and a ceremonial temple complex was excavated there, known as Chucalissa Indian village when I was growing up and beloved of grade school field trips. When I was a child you could go into the excavation where the burials were on display, which ended when a law was passed outlawing the display of human remains. After that, no one much wanted to go and see a few stone axes and a grassy hill, so the museum dwindled, and is now closed, although the interpretative signs and a reconstruction of a house remain. I have been many times as a child but hadn’t been down there in thirty years or more. Third interesting fact: the campground at T.O. Fuller is less than half a mile as the crow flies from the sewage treatment plant, so one half of the trail area smells DELICIOUS.
The trails, it turns out, are indeed challenging. Single track up and down across large tree roots and gullies. In fact we hiked most of the loop, with a plan to come back and attempt to run it when we are more familiar with the terrain. There were lots of places where I was afraid of doing what @skippygirlsmom did and ending up at the bottom of a ravine with a broken bone. We tried to run whenever it felt safe, and a view of our Strava pace shows that was about fifty paces every once in a while. Most of it we could not walk at a brisk pace - we averaged 24 minute miles. I think a lot of the uphills I could probably run, but I would have to be well rested because a careless step would mean face planting into a tree.
My husband’s comment: I can’t imagine racing here, this is the first trail I’ve been on that made me think I’m too old to run this safely.
So, of course we are going back, and trying to run more of it next time.
The little house has an interior but it’s padlocked.
I have no idea what this flower is, but it was all over the place.
Tiny frog is a southern cricket frog - he’s about the size of my thumbnail.
Yeah, this bridge was actually rotten. I put my foot right through it. Fortunately I am light footed like a lizard that walks on water, and had moved on by the time the board gave way.
In non-running news, our run was interrupted by my mom calling me in hysterics. You may have seen on the news, there was a mass shooting at the Kroger grocery in Collierville. That is the Kroger where we shop and where I ran the loop out back all during lockdown. My husband is in there often and my mom was worried we had gone shopping today to replace the groceries we lost when our fridge died. So, we were far away at the time, but it is still very close to our hearts.9 -

What a difference the drop in temperatures make. Just a short run this morning but it was only 40F and my pace was considerably better than it has been all month. Now that we have cooler weather, I’m heading south this morning to Charleston, SC to run the Cooper River Bridge 10K tomorrow.

Same here @martaindale. I can't remember the last time I paid to run a 5k. Like you, I think it's been years.
Also, I'm not prepared to pay much money to run a short distance.1 -
@rheddmobile I immediately thought of you guys when I saw the news of the shooting in TN. I imagine your mom was understandably hysterical and I'm glad you guys weren't there! That is so scary.
I have definitively encountered trails I can't imaging running on. Not so much local trails, as our don't tend to be too technical, but once I get into mountainy terrain I start feeling like I need to watch my steps too much to really run.
@kgirlhart I'm glad to hear your hip is feeling better. Your living room laps waiting on coffee reminded me of @mobycarp and his egg timer laps!
@polskagirl01 That trails is so pretty and the mushroom looks like the type that kids draw, red with the white dots. I have never actually seen one with that coloring in real life!5 -
To echo a common theme here, oh what a difference the temperature makes. Today it was in the mid 50s at run time. The last couple of months it has been in the low 70s. Approximately 20 degrees difference resulted in a pace about 30 seconds per mile faster than all the previous jaunts through the heralded woods of RTP, at the same PLE, which was confirmed by the HR data from my Garmin (154 average, 177 max). HR was actually a little more consistent toward the end of the run, so the actual effort was probably a little less than recent runs.

@RunsOnEspresso Good job on getting out and doing what you were able to do.
@martaindale Nice running. Glad you have the cooler temperatures. Great pace today, or was that yesterday. I'm trying to catch up again.
@ereck44 I'm not sure I can say that I enjoyed my HM. I'm glad I did it and that it is done. LOL I think it being virtual was a bit of a let down, but it was made much better by my friend Neva driving me to a new to me trail to run and then riding her bike to keep a check on me and my friend @Teresa502 driving down to run the last 3 miles with me. Those were though and included a lot of walking. I know for next time that I need to fuel better. I just hit the wall at 10 miles.
Beautiful place for a run/hike @polskagirl01 !
Glad your hip is feeling better today @kgirlhart ! Nice running.
Glad you are doing good @ContraryMaryMary !
@rheddmobile That trail doesn't look real conducive to running. Enjoyed the history about it. I've seen one of those frogs before. They are tiny. Glad you and DH are safe and weren't at the store when the shooting happened.
Good luck in your race tomorrow @Teresa502 !
Nice pace @sweetdaisy13 !
Nice run @Carsonsurfs ! The cooler temperatures definitely make a difference!

There were orange ones, too:Oh and @rheddmobile I also saw purple flowers like yours, and now I wished I had stopped to take a picture because they were so similar.
Apparently I took a lot of pictures of mushrooms 🍄 I'm pretty sure these are all poisonous. Other mushrooms that grow in the forest are edible though, but there are look-alikes, so I leave the mushroom hunting (a popular pastime, actually) to the people who know what they're doing.
I had coffee yesterday morning. Why do I still feel like it's affecting me?4
