Yikes @skippygirlsmom that's horrible what happened to that girl at Skip's college campus. That makes me sad (and angry)
7.2 miles this morning. Weather finally broke. It hasn't been this cool since early May (first time I have worn a shirt while running since early May too). I was so looking forward to this day, but it wasn't the ethereal run I expected. Don't get me wrong, it was very nice not to have to wipe the sweat from my eyes every 30 seconds, but I just felt kinda blah. Not sure why, probably work stress. But I'll get over it.

Had a big effort planned this morning. As my mileage had been slightly down lately due to vacation (and thus, theoretically, my legs should be fresher), I decided that I would try a time trial 5K this morning, to see what my current speed is like...
...only to then walk out into oppressive humidity (72 F, 93% relative humidity, 70 F dew point). That kind of moisture can take somewhere between 3-5% off your running time.
That said, I completed the 5K in 20:46.1, my second fastest time ever and only the second time I've beaten 21:00. In better weather, I feel like I likely would've beaten my PR of 20:24, though it still looks like I'll need to put in a little more work (and pick a cooler, crisper day!) to finally beat 20:00...

Today was probably the best run since I returned. I did a solid 55 minutes (4.6 miles) in the woods. Low 70s, but very overcast. About 2 miles in the skies opened up and the last half of the run was in the glorious rain. I had forgotten how much I love running in the rain. The cool moisture on my hot skin, the sound of the droplets hitting the tree leaves drowning out all the other ancillary noises. I was tempted to keep going a little longer, but after a 5 day family visit, I'm a little behind on work (so I'm posting here instead, lol) so I figured I should get home and get some stuff done.
74.9 out of 100 for the month
@johnisrunning I commend you for attempting a 5K time trial on your own! I think racing a 5K is probably my least favorite distance. First mile is okay, second mile sucks and the last 1.1 sucks even more! I think that in a race, on the right course, you would probably be really close to 20 minutes if you have run 20:24 solo. One thing that might help is a little more warm up. Back before a took my 4 year hiatus; for a 5K, I would run the entire course really easy, like 4+ minutes slower than race pace followed by 3 to 5 sets of strides to let the legs know that some serious ish was about to happen. Then, rest for about 10 to 15 minutes, hit a couple more sets of strides a couple minutes before the gun and then I was ready to go. On a normal run, it would take 2+ miles for my legs to loosen up, so it makes sense that an easy 5K would be helpful to run fast. YMMV8 -

I had low vitamin D levels in June. I am sure the pain, lethargy, depression and muscle jerks were related. I still have spine pain and weakness so I am seeing the PA Monday for insight, maybe check the D levels again and assure me the spine pain is ... normal? or least not a major concern. I feel like my spine is going to collapse. You know those bones you get in canned salmon? I feel like canned salmon. I've not been aggressive with the vit D so... I might regret that when I'm 80.
weight
freakin' horrible. ugh... 11 pounds over "do something!" weight. My 51 year old body thinks it's 21 and is having regular periods now... fine. but the weight up and not down is killing me.7 -
@Scott6255 I know it's awful. The school sorority was actually instrumental in the bar going to 21 and over only. I tell Skip all the time, no man left behind and ANY drunk girl is your friend watch out for her. One day at the pool, the school has an outdoor pool, a guy (about 30) sat down with some girls that looked young to Skip. The looks on the girl's faces made it obvious they didn't know him and were uncomfortable. She walked over with the guy she was with and said "do you know him?" "no" she told the guy to get lost before she called the police. He started giving her crap and her friend stepped in between them and he left. They still called campus police to give his description. Crazy people everywhere. She was actually followed while running and run up the driveway to a lady she didn't know and said hey mom how are you? the woman caught right on and gave Skip a hug and they stood there until the car left and the woman walked Skip back to her car after calling the police. I'm happy that I've taught her to be aware of her surroundings, to walk with purpose and confidence while scanning all the time, no headphones in so you can hear and don't hesitate to stand your ground if you can't run. Finally if they try to take you somewhere fight for your life, you will not come out alive if they take you.6

@skippygirlsmom That is scary about the girl at Skips school. It's so sad. Sounds like Skip has a good head on her shoulders and you have taught her well.
@Scott6255 Glad you have cooler weather. Sorry about the blahs though.
Great running @johnisrunning ! Congrats on such a great pace in those conditions.
Glad you had such a nice run @CarsonSurfs .
@swenson19d Hope all goes well with DH's eye surgery. Cataracts? Hope you get some answers from the PA. Hang in there.

It was mostly cloudy when I started my run this morning but the moon was so bright it shined through most of them. I felt a few sprinkles as I was heading out walking up my driveway but they never amounted to anything. Later this morning, said cold front and rain blew through.
@skippygirlsmom – Your recount of the guy following Skip gave me cold chills. Glad the lady was supportive and helped her out.

Went to Running Club this evening. I don't get to go very often due to family and work commitments, but it was nice to run with people again.

@Teresa502 she was pretty calm when she called me about it. She said I made sure they knew I saw them. It's horrible that our kids, both male and female, have to be so careful all the time.4

Run group was a ladder workout tonight. 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1 minute intervals with 2 minutes recovery between on the way up and 90 seconds recovery on the way down. I don't like how dark it is in the later part of the workout now. It makes it feel really long.

@Teresa502 Glad you got your run in before the front blew in. The moon was beautiful this morning.
@sweetdaisy13 Yeah for running with people! Great pace!
@katharmonic Sounds like a tough workout. I don't like how quickly it is getting dark already either.3 -
So I signed up for a half marathon before i knew that i would sprain my toes, get covid, and getting very close to selling our 2nd house. 10 more days.
So on Tuesday I ran 5.57 miles. It was 76 degrees with 86% humidity. Again the first mile sucked. I glanced at my watch to see how far i ran, before it became more comfortable and noted 1.5 miles. I never reached the zone. My goal was 6 miles but the weather was overcast and thought that i would be lucky to get 5 miles in before it started raining hard. During the run i decided to split the difference. I noted that my legs felt okay but still felt some stress on his legs.
My plan is to run 4 miles tomorrow. Then 7 miles on Sunday, a short run of 2 miles on Thursday and then half marathon one week from Saturday. We will see what happens.
My friend and i took a long walk on Sunday and found a hurt chipmunk on the trail. She picked it up and it was bleeding from the nose. It was moving all extremities. We were pretty far from our cars. I told her that i was going to move it to the grass thinking its best chance to survive was to hide it in the grass away from dogs and bikes. Not sure if i did the right thing. It had the softest fur....I've never gotten that close to a chipmunk.
@skippygirlsmom I have also received friend requests from scantily clad women in sex poses. I just delete them as i get them. Lately i have been getting friend requests from people who are from foreign countries using block lettering...so strange...
I hope all have a geat week.10 -

@ereck44 Congrats on selling your house. Good luck with the HM. I just completed my first one, which had gone virtual. It was tough. Is this an in person race? I hope the chipmunk survived.

Got out this morning for 2.5 miles. I had hoped for 3 but my body isn't fully over the immune response. My hip and ankle joints are a bit cranky and still very fatigued.

Logging 2 today. I had to run last night due to my work schedule and then did my usual morning run today. The promised cold front blew in night before last and it was beautiful all day yesterday. I ran about 6pm and it was only 81F with a whopping 30% humidity. Amazing! Then this morning, I had my first run in the 50’s for this season, 58F to be exact. I love this weather.
Today, even though I ran last night my legs felt ok. So, since it was cooler I tried pushing the pace for my 5k to see how things felt. I averaged a 9:43 pace and managed to negative split! It was harder than that pace was at the end of last racing season but it felt good to push some and see what I could do. I definitely think some speed work will help that along and maybe, just maybe, I’ll have a new HM PR this year.
I think I need to sign up for a 5k too. I haven’t raced a 5k in a couple of years. Usually I opt for at least a 10k if I am going to pay for a race. I am signed up for the 5k as a part of the Houston HM in January but I don’t want to race that one since the HM is the next day and it is my goal race. There are an abundance of races in that distance, so I’ll have to find one for December or so and see how it goes.7
