The last 10k was definitely more mental. I walked 2 of the last 6 miles. I tried to finish in under 6 hours but just missed with 6:01:55.
It was hard being a lone runner but I imagined everyone I passed in either direction was doing it with me as well.
I looked at my watch at 26.16 and got a little overwhelmed with emotions and almost cried. 26.22 today

Super marathon!!!2 -
Welcome back @marisap2010
Awesome race @polskagirl01 that hill sounds crazy!
@RunsOnEspresso you are AMAZING! I honestly have trouble imagining a full marathon virtually like that. It's so hard but YOU DID IT HOLY SMOKES YOU ARE A BEAST!!!5 -

This is super impressive!3 -
Great job, @RunsOnEspresso! I know a solo marathon is tough. My last marathon was cancelled in March 2020 at the last minute due to COVID, so I ran mine virtually too, and it is definitely a different and tougher experience. You rock!
@katharmonic New shoes are exciting! Can’t wait to see them.4 -
Welcome back @marisap2010 . Glad things are settling down for you.
Yeah for a great run @Tramboman !
Nice running @CarsonSurfs !
Thanks @Scott6255 ! Great run. You'll do great in your race next weekend.
Great race report and great running @polskagirl01 ! Congratulations. Sounds like a perfect day. Love the swag.
@shanaber I hope you are feeling better in the morning.
Great running @johnisrunning
Congratulations @RunsOnEspresso ! Finishing a virtual marathon is an awesome achievement.
@katharmonic Nice run and lovely view. Glad you got your new shoes.
Thanks to everyone who wished me well on my back pain. It's still hurting today...maybe a bit better. Still, it's been a few days, so I'm thinking about calling my PCP tomorrow and see what he wants to do. I did walk a mile on the treadmill this afternoon, after a much needed nap.

@RunsOnEspresso wow, congratulations on your virtual marathon. A truly impressive mental and physical accomplishment! Really well done.

@RunsOnEspresso So impressed with the virtual marathon!1

@marisap2010 Welcome back! Good luck with your marathon training plan.
@polskagirl01 Great write-up! Are you doing three half marathons in three weeks?
@RunsOnEspresso Bravo on running your marathon on your own! Exciting and I can quite understand getting teary. Inspirational.2 -
Outstanding effort @RunsOnEspresso.
@katharmonic, I’m interested to hear what you think of the Ghost 14. I’m a huge fan of the 13s but hate the 14s, the soles of my feet start to burn after 40 minutes. Hence my recent Asics purchase.3 -
@RunsOnEspresso - I can't even imagine running a full marathon on my own. A HM is bad enough! Awesome job!!
Too bad you couldn't have come here and run the Long Beach HM this weekend. It ended up with way less than half the runners they normally have for the marathon and HM but it looked like it was good weather down by the beach for it!
Thanks for the well wishes - I am feeling better this evening. My arm is still a mess but I feel so much better overall, just a bit of a headache but I think I am on my way through it. Hoping for a run in the morning in the coolness!!5 -
@polskagirl01 Great write-up! Are you doing three half marathons in three weeks?
Just 2 in a row this time. We have to complete 4 of 5 half marathons in the series, and I did my other 2 in September and June. When I went for the Half Marathon Crown in the region where I lived in 2020, everything got canceled, then rescheduled around the same time, so I did 3 weekends in a row, before the others got canceled and no one was able to complete the challenge that year. It left me with a feeling of unfinished business, but we also moved 6 hours away from there. Fortunately they have a similar challenge here.
@RunsOnEspresso excellent work and determination to run a marathon solo!7 -
Way to go @RunsOnEspresso !
Distance Log:

10/6 5.42
10/8 6.38
10/11 6.39
Total: 30.49/75 miles4 -
Thank you everyone! It was the last 10k that got hard. I wanted to give up at mile 23 but I was like no, you're so freaking close!
I think I had more in me. I pushed the last 1.2 miles to try to come in under 6 hours. I ran pretty conservatively and only walked a total of 3 miles. My hips tightened up around mile 20 & I stopped to stretch a bit and my feet were tired but otherwise felt good/strong.
@shanaber oh, that would have been great if I could have hoped in long beach marathon! Probably a little bit cooler than Phoenix.8 -
Congratulations on your marathon @RunsOnEspresso!1

I'm hopeless at maths when running.katharmonic wrote: »I bring up the women's cut shirt because a friend of mine is starting a little movement locally to boycott races that don't offer women's cut shirts, only unisex. /// Often more than half the race registrants are women. We'll see how this pans out locally, but I support it. Already though people are saying "it's going to increase the cost for everyone". Well then race directors, just offer only a "unisex" women's cut and that should be just as cost-effective. See how that goes for you.
Sorry for the rant! I've had a cocktail
@katharmonic As someone who is a volunteer committee member/timing coordinator on 2 differant events and like you mentioned over 50% of the participants are ladies ( +50% of volunteers ) we let the committee ladies pick the shirts and color. Since we have to pre-order before registration closes we use a 3yr average of sizes/gender to order 150 shirts and hope for the best in everyone getting a shirt that fits. Cap registration at 140 and no guarantee of a fitted shirt after pre-order cut off day. So if you register after the shirt order is placed you have to hope the averages work in your favor. Which is another good reason to register early.
Small events ( 100-150 ) so we only do a single color - differant color each year.
@ContraryMaryMary Hot/Cool pinks not allowed. Did have Pumpkin Orange one year.
@polskagirl01 Not a race director but what a great idea. Will have to see if our Social Media guru can add this to our event page for next year. Of course it only works if the size chart data is accurate.polskagirl01 wrote: »Also, wouldn't want to cause any race director's heads to explode... but it's not that hard to include a size chart (with measurements) for the shirts5 -

38.53/111 miles completed for October
I didn't get my run posted yesterday, but I did run 10.5 miles. Hal called for 10 miles at 9:38, but I ignored that pace. That's a race pace for me, not a long run pace. It was warm and humid and had 15 mph winds. Plus I was tired. We moved my mom this weekend. One of my brothers in law had put a house for his mom nextdoor to his sister. When their mom passed away about a month ago his sister offered to let my mom take the house. I think it is going work well for everyone. Mom is really excited about the new place. But we hadn't really gone through all of my dad's stuff yet. So not only did we move her to the new house we went through all the things that she wasn't taking and decided what to do with them. It was an exhausting weekend both physically and emotionally. So I needed a good run yesterday morning, but 10 miles at 9:38 in 15 mph winds wasn't happening. My run started out kind of rough, but I settled in and it ended up being a nice run and I was pretty happy with my 10.5 miles at an 11:28 pace.
Today I was planning an hour yoga and a 2 mile walk before work,, but when I was getting up this morning at 4:30 the power went out and stayed out until 7:00. So I went back to sleep for a bit and just did 15 minutes of yoga before work. I think I needed the extra rest more anyway.
I didn't really get a chance to read the thread this weekend so I am going to try to get caught up now.

I did hill repeats this evening. The part of the hill I ran was about 140m, so I sprinted up and jogged down four times, plus did a warm up and cool down.6
-
Glad you had a nice run yesterday @kgirlhart ! Glad your mom is excited about her move. I know the weekend had to be hard and emotional. Hugs for that.
I actually enjoy hill repeats @marisap2010. They make me feel strong. Great going.1 -

Walked one mile again today, after I got home from work/doctor. I did see my PCP today about my back. He says I strained it, probably from lifting/keeping the one year old's safe and happy. It does feel some better today, so he told me to continue to do the exercises I am doing and he gave me a script for an anti-inflammatory and a pain med, which I probably won't take (the pain med). He was also open to me seeing a chiropractor or a PT. I have decided to give a chiropractor a chance. I have never been to one, but the PT I went to when I hurt my leg always re-aligned my spine, so I'm sure it needs it. I stopped on the way home and made an appointment with the one my PCP recommended. I will see him next Monday.
In the meantime, he did say that I could run, but if it made it worse, to cut back/give it a break. I just didn't feel like running once I got home. LOL Maybe tomorrow.8 -
Huge shout out to our own @garygse for completing the Boston Marathon today with a time (unofficial) of 3:18
You ROCK my friend!!!!
Awesome! I didn’t even know he was running it until it popped up in my Strava feed!
I have two other MFP posters who haven’t been around for a while on my feed as running it - don’t remember either MFP handle but Danielle and Lori.6 -
Congrats to @garygse! Fantastic time!1
-
@juliet3455 that's great that you are offering multiple sizes and fits. And letting women on the committee pick .
Using a 3 year average seems smart. I'm sure it's hard to totally predict and there has to be some cut-off to guarantee your shirt size, that's understandable.
Huge congrats to @garygse on your Boston marathon finish!!! That's FANTASTIC!
@kgirlhart great long run yesterday and glad you got your mom moved. It's really hard to do that sorting of things that belonged to someone you love. Glad you got a little extra rest today.
Nice hill repeats @marisap2010. I always say I hate them, but when I do them it's not so bad. I think they are one of the workouts that is most directly beneficial to me too.
@quilteryoyo I'm sorry to hear your back is strained. I hope you find relief quickly.

Did our usual loop of the lakes for 5k in the park this morning. Absolutely gorgeous morning. I didn't have my phone with me to take a pic but the leaves were starting to look amazing.
I did take this pic after of my new shoes. Very pink!
@ContraryMaryMary interesting that you had that experience with the Ghost 14s. So far so good with me, although the ball of my foot hurts a little - I think it's from hiking rather than running but keeping an eye on that situation.
7 -
I ran for 20 minutes today - the furthest in over a year. Happy about that.11
-
Congratulations @garygse!! I also had no idea you were running until I saw it on Strava. I had a couple other friends from CA who ran it as well. Also my old boss lives in Hopkinton and always volunteers to help. She loves cheering on all the runners.
@katharmonic I am pretty sure those shoes glow in the dark! Very nice!!
I felt well enough to get out for a good run this morning. It was partly cloudy and cool with a good breeze. Got to see a bald eagle soar right over us a few times. It is the first time I have seen one in a while and they aren't usually out that late in the morning. It made my day!7 -
Glad you were feeling good enough to go for a run @shanaber.
@katharmonic those are some bright pink Ghost 14s! Keep me posted on your thoughts and experiences in those. They are on my radar (not that color necessarily )
Just a short, slow 4 miles this morning.
