I like to cook too. I haven’t eaten in a restaurant in almost two years, due to COVID. I’ve had a lot of food delivered though! I love to try new recipes. Yesterday I made sautéed cabbage. It was very interesting. I love vegetables, and cabbage is cheap here so I thought I’d try it. I’d make it again. I belong to a gourmet club. Just a group of ladies that like to cook, not really gourmet. We’re meeting inside next week for the first time in two years. We’ve been having our get togethers on zoom or outside until now. It’s getting kind of cold outside for meetings. We’re going to be tasting wine, so I’m worried it will mess up my lower carb eating.0

Thanks Margaret. I looked it up. I love kale too. Mashed are a favourite in my family. I always make a lot for when they come over. Of course they haven’t been over for a long time, but I think that’s going to change here soon.1

Lately, I have been adding mashed or riced cauliflower with various seasonings to my lean protein meal and it has helped me get more veggies in. I'm not a big veggie eater and this has been a tasty boost.2

10/24/21- 182.6 lbs. Down 72.4 lbs since 9/14/20, when I started my new job. Down 57.9 lbs since my Gallbladder surgery 5/3/21 and 49.4 lbs since I started Keto and MFP 5/14/21. So continuing to lose about 10 lbs/month and I feel great!!!!
Continued prayers for those having medical issues or having family medical issues you have to deal with. Its such a strain on you.4 -
For breakfast and lunch on my work days are the same because its easy and I have to be at work by 6:30 and work 10-14+ hour days. Breakfast a low carb Keto shake, because its quick and a salad for lunch that gets made by me the evening before. My days off I eat a brunch after my workout, a omlette/frittata with cheese and then bacon! Dinner then is something different. A meat and veggie or maybe a homemade cauliflower crust pizza, etc.
Gotta do what works for you and the life you have right now.

Had an unexpected mini vacation to the coast again. Just happy to get away while my husband is well enough to still get out as don't know what the future holds for him. We have a cruise planned before he has two chemo treatments to do. Trying to enjoy each day and keep focused on my weight issue. I'm not losing but maintaining for now which I guess is a small victory. Have a blessed week everyone.😊7

Hi yall. It's been pretty quiet lately... Just checking in to see how everyone is doing. I know as the days get shorter and the weather gets ugly some of us tend to hibernate more and more.
I tried an experiment in Oct to see how FEW meds (optional Rx ones) I could take. I had noticed over the years that for sleep I had started using more each week. Now this is a person who up until 55 or so just always slept thru the night. Now of course there is the getting up a couple times to pee etc but no reason not to go back to sleep quickly right?
Anyway, what I had noticed was that I would have a couple restless nights and then decide to take something to sleep. And would sleep like a charm. What if? I asked myself I was ALWAYS going to sleep well on that 3rd night and really did not need the Rx (lunesta, t3 etc) ? So my experiment in Oct was to just stop. It turns out I was always going to sleep well after a few restless nights and taking something was just extra and not needed. I really hate taking meds because I know they make me foggy. Even OTC ones like melatonin give me the creeps sometimes.
I did have about 2 nights during the month where I had a headache and did take a 1/4 tab of something to help with that but overall I would say a success. Honestly I think it is a good thing sometimes to step back because in my opinion the more we take these type meds the less effective the same dose is (which is the first step to addiction perhaps).

bON, Thanks for sharing about the sleep thing. I totally agree. The previous year before I retired the covid thing was going strong and work was a bear(totally stressed out). I had started taking over the counter sleep aids regularly. So when I retired in Jan. of this year I was still taking them. After the stress subsided and I got used to not working, I stopped taking them. I also found out that I sleep fine without them especially when I get my daily exercise in. I think I have substituted exercise for sleep aids(LOL). Happy Halloween Everyone!!!

Happy Halloween, for those who live in places that celebrate it. On the chit-chat front:
We finally have some Fall color here, but it's probably not going to last long. We haven't had a killing frost yet, and we're around 10 days past the average date. Last night, my rowing club did a Halloween row in the barge right around sunset, plus yummy snacks. (Among 10 rowing participants - which is almost a third of the total membership of our tiny club - 5 of us in our 60s, one 75, one well over 80. The other 4 were 30s/40s. We rowed about 6k, so just under 4 miles, though I and another woman took turns at non-rowing rudder duty, with me on rudder for around 1k.) I made orange-flavored cream-cheese stuffed dates with toasted almonds, there were brownies, cupcakes, tortilla chips with salsa, Soul Cakes, homemade caramel corn, cider, and more.
Between the highly caloric but delicious snacks, and the fact that my food scale broke on Friday, I have only the vaguest idea how many calories I ate yesterday . . . i.e., lots. Generally, that's fine with me, though I admit I'm in the midst of my traditional Fall food-cravings creep. It seems to happen every year, as the days get shorter, my appetite spikes and my ability to moderate doesn't keep up. I don't know whether this is my Scandinavian genes telling me to plump up to survive Winter, or what. 🙄 It happens about the same time my outdoor exercise decreases due to weather risks, while I'm still in denial so I don't pick up my Winter workout schedule right away. By this point (going into year 6 of maintenance soon), I'm not super stressed about this, knowing it has sorted itself out eventually . . . but jeez. 🙄
On a happier note, this is happening at my house lately: I think the orchids appreciate the dividing/repotting I gave them last Fall. Two are blooming now (one is pretty dramatic), another two are in bud (but often blossom drop before opening, so fingers crossed). These are the rattiest looking orchid plants ever, but when they rebloom it makes me really happy.
Dendrobium glomeratum, bloom only about 1" across. The droplets are because I just misted.
Adelaide Meadows 'Lime Cocktail' x Adelaide Charmer 'White Lips'. This is a nice cluster, blooms each about 2.5" high/wide and lightly spicy-scented, though photo is before some of the buds opened.
Oh, and I got new glasses: Uncharacteristically fuchsia/magenta, but I liked the pop of color with my gray hair and pale skin color, rather than darker, more neutral options.

I didn't quite meet my FINAL goal for 11/1. First November 1st goal was 190, met that early. Then second goal was 185, met that early. Third was 182.2, met that early. Last goal for Nov 1 was 180 or 179.9 lbs. Weighed 180.8lbs on Wednesday 10/27, then did my usual uptick a few days before a drop. Was at 182 for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Hoping for the 179.9 or 180 for today but was 181. Guess I could still probably get it tomorrow AM?
Also my scale with fat/muscle/water/bone percentage's worked today. It hasn't been since I started. I was told by someone from the Homedics company customer service, that it wouldn't work because of the increased amount of metal in my leg from a Tibial Plateau fracture in 2015. (I had barely weighed myself since then). It had worked before with metal from a ankle fracture in 1992. All I can think of that my fat percentage was too high before. Its now at 49% with 74 lb loss and 59 lb goal to lose yet. I know they arent super accurate but give you an idea of approximate.3 -
Hello everyone! Love reading all of these posts. They are very encouraging. I am 64, retired since December 2019 (hello COVID) and decided with my retirement I would make myself number one instead of always taking care or or worrying about others (I was a supervisor for the State of CA). I also have 4 grown kids, 5 grandkids and a husband who is disabled. I weighed 221 pounds when I retired and goal weight is 150. I also set a date of the end of 2022 to reach my goal. I currently weigh 177 pounds, so I am almost there. I work out 6 days per week and stay on a 1500 calorie diet and fast intermittently (basically eat two meals per day, with a couple of snacks of fruit or protein bars) My “program” works for me. The first few months were so hard, but I broke through hunger pains and sore muscles to finally see progress. Who says you cannot get into shape after 60. I love, love and love riding my bike, weight training, cardio exercise, etc. Had to quit running 4 years ago after I wore my right knee down and finally had my knee replaced 3 years ago. My orthopedist said no more weight bearing exercise until I lost some weight. Saw him last week and he told me I can go ahead and start running again, but no marathons or half marathons. I start the Couch to 5k tomorrow. This was a goal of mine and I am thrilled beyond words to finally lace up my running shoes and hit the road with my sidekick (black lab named Napali). She use to run with me and this will be good for her as well. I joined MFP to get me to the finish line. I also journal where I set goals for myself, add body measurements, weight loss and personal accomplishments. My husband, kids, grandkids and my friends are very supportive and are along for the ride with me. That alone encourages me to continue to stay on track. You are all doing great and are such and inspiration. Keep up the great work.

I feel really strongly about minimizing medications, generally, too. Avoiding the need for statins was one of my key triggers for finally losing weight. (Spoiler: It worked great, for me, as someone seemingly without genetic predisposition to blood lipid problems.)
But it does freak me out when people report dropping important meds willy-nilly (which the previous post did NOT, IMO).
I'm talking about cases of people I've known who don't even really seem to know what each of their pills is for, but just stop taking some (without medical consult) because it's "too many" (for non-financial reasons); or the thing we see occasionally here (for various conditions but I'll pick one I have as the example) like "I'm hypothyroid but I don't like taking medications, and XYZ random advocacy web site said it wouldn't be needed if I became vegan and ate completely clean, eating seaweed daily" or variations on that theme. Yikes!
Chemotherapy was a pretty miserable hobby, and I can't even begin to list the other drugs that routinely accompanied it to mitigate side effects . . . but I'm still stomping around in the world 20+ years after stage III breast cancer, so no complaints.
PSA: Get your recommended diagnostic tests, those colonoscopies, mammograms, etc.
And men here: Please understand that *men* can get breast cancer (though it's more rare). All too often, men who get breast cancer are diagnosed at a later stage, so higher mortality rates, because they thought the easily-felt lump on their chest was nothing. It can be something: Get it checked out ASAP. Avoiding cancer progression by getting screened is a medication-avoiding strategy.8 -

Checking in. Missed a few days on the forums, but I'm still logging food and tracking weight. Holding the line weight-wise. So that's all good.
Still riding the roller coaster at my house. Had a couple of laughs with Kathy yesterday. 😆That was nice. Not enough of those moments lately.
Trying to keep it positive. River time later this week. I definitely need that.

I have always "run hot" and used to roll my eyes at my thin co-workers who had little heaters under their desks, even in summer (especially in the summer, because of the a/c). Then I lost 90 pounds and guess what....I became one of those people and had my own little heater under my desk LOL5

Didn't make my 11/1/21 goal of 180 lbs or less. :-( But I did lose 30.2 lbs from 8/1-11/1/21 so can't complain. Stayed on track with calories, carbs, water and exercise so just a normal weight fluctuation. Hoping to lose 15 lbs till 1/31/22 in a challenge. The 10 lbs/month has got to slow down at some point soon. Starting November at 181.8 lbs.3

Hello, all...This is my favorite group, and I read the comments whenever it pops back to the top, even though I've only posted once, and that was many pages ago.
I lost 40 pounds when my husband died, and have kept it off for five years (which is a major accomplishment for me), going up a few pounds with the change of seasons, but so far, coming back down again.
I have at least another 40 pounds to lose, and figured getting started on those would be a good winter "project". My mini-goal is to be down 13 pounds by the time spring rolls around.8 -

FWIW, from reading MFP staff comments in various places about this, it seems pretty clear that they're taking these problems very seriously, and a working to cut off the mechanisms that the mass violators are using to create or take over accounts, then push porn-y stuff.
Much of these kinds of attacks - because that's what they are, as a pattern - rely on automated scripts/programs to do much of the work creating or compromising accounts. When that's true, measures behind the scenes, in addition to just deleting bad accounts, can be taken. That's been happening here.
However, there's an "arms race" kind of flavor to stuff like this: Staff cuts off avenues the bad guys are using, the bad guys change their methods, staff goes after those new methods . . . etc.
People think of the nefarious entities on the internet as solo hackers in their basements doing things with fingers on keyboard. I'm sure there are a few of those. But in reality, generically and loosely speaking, this is big business globally. There are groups that compromise accounts, sell the compromised accounts en masse on the dark web; people who write scripts to exploit compromised accounts, and sell the scripts; people who buy/run the scripts with their own "business" purposes in mind (porn advertising or ransomware attacks or whatever); boiler rooms full of people who set up accounts or use compromised ones to run person-to-person romance scams, or fake investment scams, or whatever, with training and mentors to help them be more successful; and all manner of organized nonsense.5 -
