Second week of working my way to better health. I wasn't as consistent about exercising but did manage to increase time for the workouts I completed. I did stay on track for weekly weight loss. I had the week off...so I was glad I didn't blitz on eating. Today I'm cleaning and rearranging the bedroom. I think the update will help with deep clean and clean, well laid out space will be good for my overall peace of mind.
My dog will be a little discombobulated by the rearrangement. She is keen on stability. But I'll put her favorite blanket on the corner of the bed. That will help.
Do any of you work on improving balance along with other activity? I do some yoga but not usually balance poses? Would take recommendations for things that work well.
I'm jealous of you folks in warmer parts of the country. Michigan winters are not the coldest, or harshest, but I've never been a winter sports enthusiast.3 -

Hey, Allie. I was thinking about you yesterday because my husband and I both read, independently, a study about first and second sleep. It's not unusual, apparently, and perhaps is even what we are "intended" to do. Sleep a few hours, awake for a while to eat, read, meditate, and then finish up the sleep. The study suggested that industrialization and artificial lighting may have messed up our sleep patterns, making us think that we should sleep 7-8 hours uninterrupted. I also thought of Barbie, and how she takes her dogs out for a mid-night walk. I rarely sleep through the night, and my husband never does. He wakes up at 2:00 for a short time to have a snack. (I don't think he should be eating a snack in the middle of the night, but he does.)
I'll link the most recent article from the BBC below, but if you google it, you will see many articles over the years discussing it.

Flea, I listened to a podcast recently about second sleep and it validated my sleep style. I go to bed around 7:30 so there are plenty of hours in the night to allow me to get up at 12:30 AM, walk the dogs, give us all a snack (mine is string cheese) then read the e book on my phone for awhile before going back to sleep and sleeping until just after 4 AM when I get up to walk the dogs before we have breakfast.
pinh in Michigan. I have taken line dance classes for years which has improved my balance skills. I've tried yoga but I like dancing a lot more. I live in NW Washington state where it gets cold but not as cold as Michigan. I walk a lot wearing the right clothes and YakTrax when needed for icy and snowy roads.
Pip,hugs to Yogi. I remember how sad Brandy was when she injured her knee and could walk for only 10 minutes at a time.
Carol, snow is a real treat when it doesn't happen often.
I am making matzo balls today for Jake to give to a friend along with a jar of chicken soup we have in the freezer. This is the friend who helped him get firewood and gives him homemade jam. He has been wanting to do something to say thank you.

Getting nervous about my trip to TN. My DD thinking she is doing me a favor texted me to pack warm and that there is snow predictions for the day I land! More worried about weather their than anything else! But, pictures to come!
Now off to buy a dress for rehearsal dinner. I live in an RV and don’t have anything fancy to wear. Yay! Shopping for fun day!

I do balance exercises every day. Standing on tiptoes, looking up, with your hands clasped above you, and turning a bit from side to side. It was impossible when I started, but now can do it.
Also I stand on one leg, and raise and lower myself, while straight arm lifting light dumbells to the side. I do 15. This is more for my knee than anything, but I also side raise my other leg on each straighten.
My DH has greatly improved his balance after a head injury that shot his balance to pieces. He stands on one leg a lot and closes his eyes for a few seconds. At 76, it isn't for long, but he has hugely improved. At one stage I thought we would never go on a cruise again.
One old favourite is tipping forward on one leg with arms outstretched and then twisting sideways. I haven't done that for years, but thanks for reminding me!

Tea for me, rather than coffee, but the sentiment stands:
LOVE that- I am the same as you. I do drink coffee (dh says I drink coffee flavored milk) but I do prefer my tea. Start out each day with some kind of black/caffeine tea and end it with herbal or decaf and some kind all day long.

Vancouver Island, where I live, has a tsunami advisory because of the same volcanic eruption as Machka in Tasmania! It is just a warning for people to stay off beaches, but interesting that two very far apart islands get a warning because of the same event!

2-sleeps ... I always slept from the minute my head hit the pillow until it was time to wake up ... until this past year. Now I find that I more often than not have a 2-3 hour wake period in the middle of the night and I'm not impressed. Other than using the bathroom, I stay in bed and use the time to organize my thoughts and pray.
Cider Vinegar and Tumeric ... thank you Barbara, Okie and Machka for your insights. I seem to remember trying turmeric years ago and not liking it. I'll see how I do with cider vinegar. So far my research indicates that you start slow and make certain to protect tooth enamel.
Very cold here today and snow storms predicted for the next 48 hours. We'll be watching play-off football tonight (Go Bills!!) from our comfy couch and eating junky food. I don't usually join my guys in junk eating ... don't need to make it 3-sleeps ... but I might for this game. Missing my older son today. He was an avid football fan and this would have had him so excited.
Continuing on my declutter mission. Emptied out two upper cupboards that were storing all kinds of inexpensive cut glass items that I never use and most likely never will. Took some photos and shared with family members who picked what they wanted. Yay! I'll box it all up and give it to them when I see them next. I'm not a minimalist, but I am very overwhelmed with what is facing me at my parents house and what I see in my own home (especially the basement). Now's the time to move things out.

Did Michelle Dozois Cardio Strength DVD today. The plan for tomorrow is to do Margaret Richards All My Best DVD
M – no, Vince isn’t a smoker. The GP has run out of ideas of things he can do. He’s such a pickey eater that I doubt he’d take garlic pills. If he ever knew the times I put garlic in his food, he’d never eat. He did see an ENT. He suggested the allergy shots (which I don’t think are working for the mucus buildup.). You know, the first time I ever saw “tsunami evacuation route” was when Jess was in St. Kitts and we went down there to see her at her white coat ceremony.
Rori – I’m soooo glad for you that your niece and her partner are there for you so much
Barbara – thanks for tell me what WMP stood for. Never heard of it, but I’ll use that the next time.
Lisa – we’re supposed to get snow tonight into tomorrow. They’re calling for 8-12 inches, that translates into 3-4. I just say “I’ll believe it when it’s on the ground”. Burger King doesn’t close. But probably like by you, just about everything else shuts down. Vince wants to get the fireplace ready in case the power goes out. I swear, he’s getting to be a real worry-wort about things like this.
Carol – that looks like a Christmas card! Stay safe
Made tilapia for later in the week (and the freezer). Then made soup. Tomorrow going to be making pierogi to send to Jess for her birthday. Yes, it’s in March, but I figure we can make them and I’ll freeze them so they’re all ready to send to her when we get back from FL. Glad I bought the cheese the other day and the sour cream
Vince was saying earlier today that he wanted to light the pilot light on the fireplace in case we lost power. Tonight...he’d rather do it during the daylight.

Well with Tsunami warnings and snow warnings it appears we have a lot of weather covered. Glad everyone is safe! We may get a bit so snow tomorrow but nothing like other areas. Fairly cold though.
Saw urologist yesterday. He wants to try 90 days of antibiotic to see if that takes care of things-if not will do further testing. I don't like the idea, but I will give it an opportunity to work. Don't like being on antibiotics but I guess there is much word so I will stop whining.
Picked up some of the trim I am using for molding in basement. Just 1x3x8 mdf. Bought it primed. Not sure what color I will want for it or the walls down there so just putting it up as is and do painting in spring when can open windows.
Was notified yesterday that the gym I have been using (which is attached to a physical therapy practice) is closing gym to make room for physician's offices. There are plans to add on to the building with a gym, but that has been delayed for a year. That's part of my push getting basement finished now so I can get treadmill, bike, etc. set up and usable. I like the equipment at the gym better, but mine will work. I am meeting with trainer one more time tomorrow to set up some things I can do at home with equipment I have. I can also use the county wellness center for employees. I just liked being at a place with a professional. Oh well-I think I can keep up something.
Well, it appears that the Cincinnati Bengals may win their game. I am a Browns fan, but since they are done, I can root for the other Ohio team. Plus, my future DIL is a Bengals fan.
Off to focus on the last two minutes!
Take care all,

My husband and I do Pilates ... and we need to get started with that again.
I live in Tasmania, so it's summer here. Much more tempting to be outside than inside doing Pilates.

It was night when it came through.
Apparently it was flat calm ... and then a 20 cm wave came through ... and then it was flat calm again. I think that was it.

Day off mornings are usually:
Sleep in really late
Black coffee
Ease into day.
They are a stark contrast to my weekday mornings where I'm up early-ish and dashing off to work.
Regarding sleep schedules:
Thursday night, I slept about 10 hours because I had Friday off.
Friday night, I slept 7.5 hours and got up early to do our 50 km bicycle ride on Saturday.
Saturday afternoon, I laid down for a short nap and got up 3.5 hours later at about 6 pm.
Saturday night, I slept 10 hours and just got up.
Tonight will be back to my weekday schedule where I get about 7 hours of sleep/night.
By the end of a week, I'm so tired I can sleep long hours through the night (except for occasional toilet breaks), take a long nap late in the day, and go to bed to sleep long hours through the night again.
I also do not drink caffeinated coffee or tea after about 4 pm. During the week, I'll have 1-3 cups of coffee during the day and on weekends I'll have 1 or 2. But after about 4 pm, I switch to non-caffeinated tea.

Does he use nasal sprays or decongestant pills? Those can backfire if they are used for long periods of time.
Also I asked about the ENT because I had decades of congestion and sinus infections. I started using nasal sprays, got hooked, and then worked to get off them. I went through the allergy shot thing. I have inhalers of various sorts on hand. But nothing really seemed to work.
Finally, in 2020, I was able to get in to see an ENT specialist (they've got long waiting lists). She took one look up my nose and told me that I had a badly deviated septum and that the tissues around were so inflamed that one side was almost entirely closed. This allowed mucus to collect and become an infection which would make matters worse. Basically, I had chronic infections.
In July 2020, I had my nose fixed. That's not a nice surgery but about 6 weeks later, I began to discover what it was like to breathe!!
Sinus headaches ... gone!
Massive quantities of mucus ... gone!
Sense of smell ... returning!
The thing was, the ENT specialist told me that my deviated septum likely happened at birth or early childhood. And yet, all those years of seeing doctors and going to allergy specialists etc. etc., not one of them noticed.
I do still wake up coughing with mucus occasionally. I think I must just produce more than the average person. But it does seem like if I take garlic pills, they help. Maybe they help reduce inflammation. (But it is good to research before taking supplements to ensure they don't have negative interactions.)

@exermom
Got a question. For years now (yes, years) Vince has been having this mucus buildup. He says it’s in his sinuses and he has to cough, that breaks it up. Well, our GP gave him this and that, nothing helped. So now he’s going for allergy shots (since he is allergic to cats). I don’t think they’re helping. I don’t like the sound when he coughs to break the phlegm up. Has anyone else had something like this?
Michele NC
I have had a mucous build up in the back of my throat for about 10 years now. I was told and am being treated for acid reflux. Apparently everyone has it but with acid reflux it builds up more to help protect the esophagus. I didnt think the pills were helping until I stopped taking them. I also have nasal spray that helps my sinuses. Again, I didn’t think it worked until I stopped. I have a humidifier in my bedroom and almost always have the window opened a crack. I see we finally have mucinex here in Canada. I was thinking of trying that, because nothing seems to “cure” it.

Hello ladies!
I usually sleep through the night from ten pm to about seven am. I'm lucky now. I went through insomnia with menopause, but that's all done. I was off all caffeine but now I'm back on green tea.
I did my dumbbells. Yay! And ate well, despite temptation. I've been alternating salads and sweet potatoes, but today I had a second yogurt instead. All's well that ends under calories!
I tried a three hour silent meditation "retreat" on zoom today. I won't do it again. What was I thinking? It was a royal nuisance to work around the laundry, the dog, my mother, and my general routine. Next time I will say "no." An hour is plenty for me and my household.
We are expecting snow Sunday night, and then rain to wash it away. Monday morning might be tricky, but I won't leave the house until Tuesday for groceries. So we should be fine.
Hugs to those who need them,

I think something like that would work better if you booked a night in a hotel and got away from general routine.
By silent mediation ... is that like 3 hours of not talking, just thinking?
0 -
Yes Machka, that was the idea. And you are right, getting away from the house might have worked a lot better. Trying to squeeze in the household tasks, like yelling at the dog to come inside, just ruined the mood.
In general I really like meditation but I usually do it after dinner when the house is quiet and the dog is settled. I do it on my own timetable, so I'm not rushing to finish other things.

Oh you might have been asking was it guided meditation with a leader talking? Yes mostly it was guided.0

I was wondering if it were just a time of silence. 3 hours of silence sounds wonderful ... but impractical if there is anyone around.0 -
I'm doing some heavy duty weeding in one of the scariest areas of our yard. It's so overgrown, who knows what's in there!! So far I've found more weed grass than I imagined, blocks of wood, snails and potatoes.
But about weeds ...
What are these? Are the ones on the right chickweed?

Machka, the US West Coast was under the same tsunami warning today. Felt a little uneasy at dog group at Crissey Field, not far north of Crescent City. It was devastated by a tsunami in 1964. All’s well today, thank goodness. Hope no scary critters lurking in those weeds…
Evelyn saw there was a quake near Vancouver Island, did you feel it?
Pinh see if there are any Better Bones and Balance classes near you. Good for strength as well as balance. Also T’ai Chi has really helped my balance. Also standing on one leg for 30 seconds while brushing teeth, then switching to the other for the next 30 seconds. Good luck! Remind me what you want to be called?
Flea funny I stumbled on the first and second sleep article a few days ago too. Was comforted as that most nearly matches my crazy pattern.
Michele, Tracey, Machka sometimes dairy makes me mucous-y.
Annie 3 hours? :noway:
Sleep: today I woke around 4am, went to bed around 6pm woke at 9, now its 11:15 and I’m headed back to bed. The exact times shift around but the total sleep is fairly constant at 7-8 hrs, more if I get a nap

No, not sticky.
We've got the sticky ones too, and there is a sticky one on the right side of the left photo. These other ones lie on the ground like dandelions but without the central flower.
The sticky ones are galium aparine, with common names including cleavers, clivers, catchweed and sticky willy.
