I have yet to make up my mind about the 4th shot. On the one hand I am high risk and my 3rd shot was in October, on the other I have had a lupus flare from each of the previous shots, and also cases are very low here at the moment. Since the elevated antibodies from the booster drop quickly, I don’t want to waste that window of immunity and then be less protected when cases do start to increase. Since it supposedly takes only a few days for the booster to have an effect I believe I will wait a while longer.
In other news, is anybody else seeing bare shelves in the grocery? I couldn’t get any type of canned cat food, milk department mostly empty, meat mostly empty. It was worse than I’ve seen it in a while.1 -

Friends are reporting problems with cat food, too.
Personally, the only thing I've needed that seems to be in short supply is distilled water, which seems odd (here). Shelves are empty, often; and if not, quantity one can buy is limited (quota). I need it - ideally - for my CPAP, like it for some things for orchids, but the latter is obviously more luxury than necessity.
Milk availability here has been OK, when I've shopped.0 -

Distilled water has been an issue in my area as well. We use it for humidifiers.
My grocery store hasn’t had it for months, but I’ve been able to find it intermittently at random Targets and Walmarts.0 -
I thought the distilled water thing was just my location. Guess not. Also no lactose free milk. Might have to do without as long as I can get my yogurt!
Got Pfizer vax and Moderna booster. Will probably get Pfizer for the second booster, when I'm due and keep swapping, just to mix it up and increase reactivity.
Even though our community rate is Low, most people at work are still wearing masks, to keep each other safe. One of our younger folks got COVID so, despite care, it's still possible.2 -
Cynthia-H, I'm so sorry you are unable to get your lactose free milk.
I have a reaction to the dominant bovine dairy casein, I have found relief by using goat milk where the dominant casein is t3 and for some makes the ingestion of lactose much less of an issue. I fear finding goat milk would be like finding hens teeth, even if you whished to try it.
I'm in the UK and the second booster is available for those with compromised immune systems, from treatments for cancer etc and those over 75 here. My expectation is the availability will be expanded eventually to those who are younger.
Set this against our free Lateral flow testing having finished yesterday. Any you have can be, should be used up. In our locality the numbers with covid are higher than the national average! The requirement to wear masks is much reduced, leaving it to ones decision. I wear a mask because I have had increased chemical reactions of late, (I no longer get looked at as if I'm from Mars) I'm wearing my speciality mask when I'm in busier areas.
Took my cat to the vet for her annual vaccination the other day. neither the vet nor the receptionist/nurse were wearing masks. the vet put one on for our consultation. The practice does have a cat waiting room, I expect to save them from the unwanted attentions of dogs. We too have difficulties obtaining cat food, particularly for elderly cats. 11 plus cats, their dietary needs are more complicated than those of kittens for whom there is a copious amount of foods available in fish and meat varieties, in both jelly and gravy. I thought cats were renown for loving fish but the only flavours, when they are available are meats! My cat does not drink water. I'm thinking she was originally taken from her mother too young, she came to me as a 5 year old on dry food with health issues. Put immediately onto moist foods she thrives. I discovered she goes mad for goat milk the other night, if only I'd thought of that when she arrived.
It has to be said in that specific area of town, we don't get out much child minding collections excepted, that particular precinct there is a distinct lack of masks. The branch of one chain of supermarkets is not requesting the wearing of masks few are wearing masks within the store either. I suppose its hardly surprising when the political side of things are saying we are post pandemic, no need for the financial, and other supports they provided. The medical side is saying we still need to be careful. More persons are being admitted to hospitals with covid as a secondary health issue. but there are more covid cases in the community than at any time since it all began. I see this as scope for more not fewer variants happening, even with the vaccines and the virus not wishing to wipe out its human hosts there is no guarantee there will not be a more vicious variant again.
Everyone, Keep safe in your own ways.3 -
Finding a few minutes to catch up
Cat food is an ongoing challenge for me. Specifically the canned. It gets even harder after being in cat health groups (nutrition is often addressed) and having a very short list of brands, proteins, styles and ingredients that you will feed. Milk here is fine, but half and half is a continual problem. So cat food and half and half, I keep a 1 month buffer whenever I can.
As for COVID itself, I will share a story that was an eye opener for me. Being in the Florida Keys where most everything is open air, I have gotten rather relaxed about my COVID concerns. Reported numbers are very low, like "0" reported is not uncommon. Anyhow, we were supposed to go out to eat with neighbors this past week. They ended up cancelling two days before as they were "under the weather". Turns out the husband got so sick from COVID that he went for monoclonal antibodies. He is a doctor that deals with "last resort" care and sees many on their deathbed. His opinion is that he was sick enough that he would be dead had he not gotten the antibodies. His wife has since gotten a milder case. Both are fully vaccinated and boosted (they even flew to their home state twice last year because the younger wife would qualify for vaccination there before she could get it in Florida.) Their story was a bit of a reality check for me.9 -

Distilled water also in short supply here (Ontario. Canada) although the only thing I use it for is the clothes steamer so not a big deal.
Still big gaping holes in the breakfast cereal shelves. I don't eat it but my father hasn't been able to get any of his three preferred varieties for a while. I rarely buy milk as I only use it for baking but haven't noticed that the dairy coolers look particularly bare. Meat supply seems okay too although again that is entirely based on my father's shopping as it's not something I buy.0 -
Weird stuff is missing from shelves here. Yes, distilled water. But also salted peanuts as opposed to unsalted? What's up with that? I happen to prefer salted peanuts in the shell but they don't have them. I was using a certain brand of SF syrup then it was no more for a couple months. Now it's back.
Cookie aisle is pretty scant. I'm lucky to nab a bag of Cheetos every week for hubby. The stock is simply very low or zilch.1 -

I use distilled water for my CPAP and need to get more... Hopefully I can find it.2 -
I've had intermittent issues with organic half & half and Cabot cottage cheese for some time.
I've been worried about cat food but so far no issues with what I get - the 14 pound dry Rachel Ray via Amazon Subscribe & Save. The vet techs said they were passing him around and marveling at how soft his coat is. I started paying attention to cat food ingredients over 20 years ago when I had a cat with a bad coat. I asked the vet about it. He asked what I fed him. I said whatever I have a coupon for. He kind of gave me a look. He failed on his opportunity to educate me, but I picked up on the look and educated myself.
Rachel Ray is kind of middle of the line. There are definitely better brands, but he likes it, has a great coat ("softest coat ever" according to the vet techs), and it fits my budget.
I don't understand the point in canned food and have never used it. Maybe we could start a new thread for this?2 -

When we adopted Han Solo, Sept 2017, it turns out he was an IBD cat. That led me to related IBD groups, and then feline health and nutrition groups. Yes, the topic would require a whole thread in itself, and I know everyone would get quite bored. Short story, Han is fed only wet food and PITA Harry is about 75% to 90% wet with part of that "wet" being balanced homemade.4 -
My cat will not drink water! She never has in all the years she has been with me. We always put a bowl of water down for her but she never even looks at it, I've even tried filtered water. She came to me on dry food. I'd been told of her long history of cystitis and blood in her urine etc. I wanted better for her than that so I decided it had to be moist foods for her. she arrived with a coat very much like a bottle brush it was so very hard now she is as soft as sable. She's been my little pall since November 2013. She is a ripe age now without any incontinence, or any other urinary tract issues, at least for now, she is fast becoming elderly and who knows.
For me you can keep your dry cat foods, even meats or fish in jelly. Its anything in gravy for her. Once I heard someone going on about, "why on earth cat soups". I told them straight, if a cat will not drink soups, cat soups can be a real help in hot weather.
The reasons for a cat not drinking can be it was taken from its mother at too young an age. Also worth considering as a wild animal any cat would hunt and take its own food, its moisture would come from the tissue and blood of the animal taken.............
In recent days I've discovered she loves goat milk. Tonight I brought out my pot of goat yoghurt she was there, looking at the pot so longingly, I gave her a scrape from a spoon and then another followed by, all gone. She was in total bliss. It turned into a real treat for sharing her home with my daughters rabbits, She remembers them from 2 1/2 years ago! and they her. (even with goat milk its best to give it half and half but she is not worried. Its not advisable to give a cat cow milk thought)

You have hit a number of the bullet points. From what I have heard, cats are purportedly desert animals and do not have a thirst drive and are supposed to get their moisture from their food (ie the prey they catch). A cat supposedly will not drink enough water to compensate for the lack of moisture in dry food and increases the risk of urinary crystals and the like. While I do keep a water fountain, since going all wet, Han drinks water about once a year and Harry, maybe 3 or 4 times.
As for gravy foods, while my cats love them, they are too high carb to be "correct" for an obligate carnivore. If I want more moisture like a gravy, I add a TB of water into the pate style they get fed. I feed using microchipped feeders that only opens for the correct cat (maybe I need a fridge that does that for me. :P ). Seems to be working for the boys. The IBD symptoms are under control, stools are firm and almost odor free. No hairballs (a symptom of diet - catch should be able to process fur - they don't throw up fur and feathers in the wild). Han also has allergies that I monitor, and Harry will soon be seeing a cardiologist and may be getting a pacemaker. Good think I don't have kids to take care of any more........5 -
Interesting about cats that won't drink water. I never knew that. DH had a cat that wouldn't drink water except when he left the tap going just a little bit and he'd drink from that.3

SModal. you are fortunate your cats may go near running water every now and then.
We took our little girl out on a lead/harness, from a campsite a while back, (she knows she is a dog). She even does wildlife watching, birds, rabbits, anything which passes, not a his or snarl to be heard from her dashboard view point. May be she knows they belong there and she does not. On one footpath walk there was a country bridge in the middle of nowhere over a small running stream, made from railway sleepers. She gaily bounded up the two steps, then in the middle of the bridge, she froze hearing the water, she's not a water girl of any kind. Surprisingly she did not mind hearing the not so distant trains every now and then, the whistles and engines but the running water terrified her.
I've done the adding water to different flavours even blitzed some in her own small gadget adding water but she was not that interested. We may be fortunate over here to have when available, in theory age appropriate foods, those intended for the kitten, the adolescent, giggle, the mature feline and those of advancing years 11+.
Reenie - I'm glad your daughters cat found his way to get moisture. They can be pickles.
I hope the person who needs distilled water for her essential equipment can find it. Might their medical practice be able to help. Distilling your own, boiling a kettle and catching the steam is a bit on the dangerous side not to mention not necessarily as hygienic as required.
Its being reported today, the estimate of the working population off work because of covid is 1/3.
Major airlines are canceling planes because of cabin crew shortages. Some large airports are being hit twice or three times because having slimmed their workforce to "get through lockdowns" staying profitable or skeleton crews they are now being hit by this wave of cases. Hospital admissions are up though many have covid as a secondary issue and the numbers with covid are still rising. Mask usage was reported in a local town as being only 2, members of my family and 1 shop worker!1 -

I've never had a cat that would not drink water, but certainly cats that preferred to get most of their hydration from food. I've definitely found that cats often love running water (like from the tap), though. I had a cat who was very much attracted to running tap water such that I bought one of the running water drinking fountains for her, but she didn't like it, and I've gotten it out for my current cats (the cat in question is sadly no longer alive), but they also don't like it. One of my cats (my 18-year old) has gotten very interested in water, and my vet says it is because he -- like many cats of that age -- has mild kidney disease and is compensating in part by drinking more.4 -
As long as we're discussing cats and water, I'd love to have an explanation for my newest adoption's actions. She will not leave the water container alone. If it's a bowl, she flips it, even the 'unspillable' styles. I tried using a gallon bucket and she dragged it to the other end of the house. I've never seen this behavior before.5

I have no explanation. Cats can be pips, can they not? (I am in facebook cat behavior groups. Someone there might have an insight for you.)4 -
Got the memo my large corporation is going back to the office. Company speak for your butt will be back in an office most of the time lol.
At least masks aren't required based on state regulations.
"Over the coming weeks, we look forward to recapturing the benefits of more frequent in-person collaboration, knowledge sharing and joint problem-solving. Social and informal interactions with colleagues help strengthen our networks and connections and build rapport. Similarly, there is also work that can be accomplished productively outside the office, like individual efforts, focused work, information gathering or tackling a to-do list.
In May, we will sunset our voluntary return and encourage leaders and employees to work together to find the right balance of flexibility in meeting business and individual needs. As previously communicated, there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to the frequency of working together in the office. Working productively, together or alone, is imperative. We have to continue to adapt, retaining what we learned through the pandemic while valuing the benefits of being together.
We will continue to learn, and while the workplace has and will keep evolving, what is constant is your dedication to executing our strategy and remaining engaged with our customers and each other."4 -

I can imagine a whole lot of eye rolling on reading that. Wha a lot of fluff.
My workplace was pretty much the same, but at least they set a hybrid plan. Work from home Monday and Fridays if you want, be in the office Tuesday to Thursday. If you wanted a different work from home arrangement need to have formal approval. The plan wasn't so much for my office, but the bigger head office in another state.
In my state (in Australia) though we didn't have any long lockdowns (only lockouts/border restrictions), and a lot of people returned to work fairly quickly. Masks were not mandated initially but when we had a big outbreak mid December, masks were mandated inside by the state govt, but that finished about a month ago. Work has recommended masks inside but hasn't mandated it. My state is at its peak now with covid cases, not a large number by any means but large for the small state we are.7 -
Went grocery shopping yesterday morning. Aldi had whole sections that were just empty. Almost no eggs, no potatoes or onions, none of their snack packs or fruit snacks. Whole areas of shelving was just empty. No idea if it was truck issues, other supply problems, or not enough staff to stock the shelves, but it wasn't even this bad during the worst of the hoarding.

You have my sympathies. Talking with my son the other day he too has similar experiences in a Southern UK city, shelves empty everywhere, having to try several shops rather than the one stop shop.
Here we also have channel crossing issues. One international shipping lines has, bypassed going into liquidation by, if I understand it correctly, sacking all UK employees on higher pay and conditions, later arranging some sort of package with those persons. Then employing cheaper crews. Now many of their ships are unable to sail because the new crews are not up to the standard require or not available or other some such issues. The consequence of this is there are miles of lorries, some have been "on the road" for several days, holiday makers are amplifying the situation with Easter breathing down our necks, all are stuck on the roads of Kent. Dover, the city and port, has been described as gridlocked for days. This means fresh foods are not making it out and I suspect fresh foods are not getting into Dover either, probably causing holdups in French ports. I know there are other ports round Britain but Dover has the shortest crossing. This just goes to show how the extended issues stemming from covid have complexed tendrils, probably begs the question, what will happen next.
The regular financial figures on inflation etc were published this morning, as a side comment it seems many of us Brits are going off holidays at the same or similar volumes to before covid. It was also said we don't have similar numbers of over seas persons traveling to Britain, the reason suggested is our still very high numbers of covid cases. Extending from that, the NHS is being said to be in a situation, staff availability and bed occupancy much the same as would be expected in the middle of winter.
Never rains..................
Take care all, keep safe.

Is this due to the pandemic?
I work for a manufacturing company and we are having trouble with getting one of our raw materials because of Russia... so it isn't always the pandemic.4 -
I'm so medically out of it this morning, I can't get my thoughts and words together properly.
I'm sorry you face more closures and things, may be ultimately job losses but better that than lives, you should have some personal alternatives.2 -
They're thinking of reinstating mask mandates locally for schools. We were going to go out for breakfast this a.m. and the restaurant was closed due to kitchen help having Covid. Deaths might've have slowed down, TG, but it's still making people sick and getting spread.5

Which state are you in tiptoe?
I am sure you have told me before but I have forgotten.
I am in SA - we continue to have high case numbers here, mostly mild, but still some people dying.
More easing of restrictions midnight Thurs - masks which were required in all indoor public settings, unless eating/drinking or excercising, will only be required in high risk settings - hospitals, aged care facilities, community health settings, public transport, planes, inside airports (why one is more at risk inside an airport vs inside at, say, a shopping centre, alludes me)
Also QR coding being phased out - was recently phased out in shops but still required in hospitality and health settings.
Will only be required in hospitals and aged care facilities.

Church was full Easter Sunday. The Sign of Peace (a handshake with those around you) was back. So nice to see.

I have covid rn - on day 5. Given I am triple vaxx'd it's been worse than I expected. Two days of the worst flu I have ever had (relentless fever and headache even with alternating tylenol and advil every 3 hours), two days of sore throat that hurt to talk and burning sinuses, now it's like a bad cold and my eyeballs hurt. Never felt in danger of having to get care or anything, just feel awful. (It's our busiest time so I could only take one day off work - that probably isn't helping.)14
