BL had his first woosh yesterday.
I heard the hooting and hollering and ran in to investigate and he was hopping up and down and pointing at the scale. He was so excited he couldn’t get any words out other than “Lowest! Lowest!”
What’s a “woosh”?
A woosh can happen any time, but usually after you’ve plateaued for a while. You’ve reached the Nth degree of scale frustration, and one morning you weigh, and several pounds are gone like hard-working, calorie counting, sweary mouthed magic.
You won’t know when it’s going to happen, and unfortunately, you can’t make or will it to happen.
It may never happen, or it may happen several times, as it did for me.
I knew I was fixing to have a woosh when something weird happened. My butt sagged overnight, my batwings took on an independent swingy life of their own, my thighs dimpled badly overnight. I used to jokingly call it my body, rearranging the furniture, but that was exactly what it was like.
Don’t despair if you’ve flatlined. As long as you’re sticking to plan, and carefully weighing and recording food to make sure you are, weight will drop, whether slow and steady, or in stop and go fashion.
Every “body” is different!

I am a whoosher, too. Nothing for about three weeks, then 3-5 pounds gone overnight. It's a good thing to know about yourself. It's one of my big reasons I advocate for daily weighing. I learned a lot about my body through daily weighing.11

I remember how you initially phrased it and I'll never forget it. Did you ever go through the marble phase. When it feels like marbles under the skin, on your stomach. Yes, I rode on the lard train to fruitcake town.5

Yes!!!!! I got hard marbles near my biceps. I was convinced something was wrong, or it was a cyst or something. I poked at it and felt my arm all the time for a year or two.
Weird stuff happens. The morning my thigh cellulite popped was insane. They literally looked like a popcorn ceiling.
I was absolutely flipping out. “I busted my *kitten* to lose weight to get this?!!!” And 24 hours later it was gone and my thighs looked like I’d had a chemical peel, they were so pretty and smooth. It was the damndest thing.7 -
Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like some of the "how to break your plateau" suggestions are sometimes just a way to spend time feeling like one is doing something, while a whoosh-to-be is waiting in the wings. When the whoosh happens, the most recent "one weird trick" gets the credit. Certainly some of the explanations people advance for why interventions break a plateau are nonsense IMO from a physiological standpoint, such as the "body gets used to an exercise so it doesn't burn many calories anymore" idea.9

I completely agree with this. I've gone up to 4 weeks hanging around the same (or higher) weight, but my whooshes are highly predictable now. I will always hit a new low weight at a specific time during my cycle, 4-7 days before a new cycle starts. My weight starts creeping back up about 2 days prior to the new cycle, but since I've been in a deficit, it never climbs all the way back up to the high weight from the previous cycle.
The overall weight loss is still happening, it's just difficult to see on the scale day to day. Now I'm losing extra slowly on purpose to feed the workouts and stop the hangry, so I'll be happy to see just a one pound drop from month to month.9 -

I find these weight loss mysteries so fascinating. My marbles stuck around for quite some time. Ironically, the best day of my weight loss 'journey' was the day I beat the PoPo to my house. 👮🏼♂️ I found someone buried out in the middle of nowhere. My dog was with me. I called them and they offered me a ride to the house. My dog wasn't having it. I ran as fast as I could go and beat them home. They asked me how I did it and I don't know. I was running down a gravel road with my dog's ears, flying out sideways. It made everything so worth it. Transcendent.10 -

@springerling62. Really!? Did your cellulite actually pop and then disappear? I find this so interesting. My thighs look awful, and worse as I've lost weight. I've always had cellulite even as a young 20-something. Now not only is it on the back of my legs but the front also is dimpled and rippled. When I'm sitting down it's not noticeable so much ( I think that's because as I've lost weight the skin is looser and the fat moves around with gravity) but when I stand up my legs have those folds and dimples in front as well as in back. How far into your weight loss did it pop?

It was tragic, but I go back and pay my respects. I can't say anything more. It scared the hell right out of me. I've never run so fast in my entire life. I could feel someone watching me on a hillside. I believe, I was correct. They were watching me. It was more than adrenaline. I'd been hiking 5-7 mi aday UP steep mountainsides. Never doubt, what you're doing has a real purpose. Some day, you might have to pull it all together. You will draw upon all the strength in your body. It's so worth it. Momentum will take you much further than motivation every will. Motivation is a limited resource. It runs out.
I want to get that level of fitness back. It takes solid hard work, every day. As you know @quiksylver296, our quality of health is serious business. Without it, we're limited. Sometimes, I do pop off. I know when people are simply trying to pull the wool over our eyes and mess with our heads. We're allowed only so many heartbeats and none of this is really funny or a joke.
My Jack Russell is fierce and mighty. She would die for me. She's all heart.4 -

My thighs were heavily dimpled and pitted overnight, with freakish bumps the size of small peas. Within a day or two it was all gone and thigh skin was tight. That was probably about a year and seventy or eighty pounds in.
I’ve found that, even with age, as long as I exercise regularly, things still change. The first 18 months change was rapid and often surprising, the next two and a half, it’s been “creeps up on ya” kind of change.
I still have a ring of extra skin around my waist, but it’s shrinking, if at a glacier’s pace. It’s not “belly fat” (a term I loath), it’s flexible malleable extra skin.
I figure if that’s the worst I have following 25 years of obesity, I can live with that.

@springlering62 Bodies can be both strange and amazing things!1

Well, BL had decided to maintain because he’s been plateaued for a while.
He dropped two pounds this week, and then a third a couple days later.
We also went to TJ Maxx for dog beds, where his eye was caught by a plaid shirt. It was an L and he put it back. (He was an XXL this time last year.)
“Try it in over your T-shirt. You don’t have to go into a dressing room”.
To his utmost amazement, it fit other than a little gathering around his shoulders. (He’s very broad shouldered and narrow waisted.) It fit though he didn’t like the fit, and boy, was he full of himself getting into that L.
He’s reinvigorated, and re-engaged with his logging.
He’s EVEN seriously considering going on the Camino de Santiago walking pilgrimage with me in Spain next spring. This is a major win for a guy who was shocked to learn he was getting under 3500 steps a day when he got an Apple Watch a year ago.

Agreed. It baffles me how many non-premium users get so riled up about bugs or features on a free platform.9 -

NSV: BL and I can go down the stairs at the gym, side by side.
That’s pretty cool.
Grateful for the small things.15 -

On that note, I was just having to travel for business this week, got plenty of compliments from remote coworkers I hadn't seen in a while, and overheard many folks complaining about fitting into airplane seats as well as a flight attendant spouting pseudoscience about needing to remove toxins to be healthier. Grateful for the health and knowledge this platform has supported over the years.9 -

Ugh. I work with one of these. She's going to a naturopath (sp?) for her cervical cancer!!! Thankfully she is also going to an oncologist, but she trusts the naturopath more.3 -

Thank heavens she has enough sense to continue the oncologist as her backup plan. Cancer fear does terrible things to peoples heads. I had a dear dear friend who would not utter the word, and would become really angry if others did in her presence. A motorcycle club pooled together to gift her a handmade wig, and showed up unexpectedly on their bikes to present her the certificate. After they left she cried with anger, and also guilt, over being angry.
On a happier note, yesterday BL and I went to a very nice local men’s boutique. I’ve never been in a place like this before. The owner had books of fabric, like an interior designer would, and was putting together outfits like a wizard.
BL wanted to leave, but I encouraged him to stay. He needed something for a wedding in a couple of months, and something quicker and stylish for family photos next week.
When the guy started fitting him, professionally, we found he’d dropped out of the 40’s waistline and into the 30’s. The clothes fit him like a dream, even before altering. He looked slender in them, and very classically stylish. Something clicked and after verifying they can take everything in even more when he loses more weight, he treated himself. I’d venture to say he spent more on himself in one blow than in the past ten years combined.
He even got cool leather tennis shoes that made him look like a teenage skater dude.
I sent pictures of him being fitted to the kids, and they immediately responded “Whoa!!!!” “Diddy lookin’ fly!” “You should get slim fit!”
I thought he’d kick and scream, but he ponied up, and told me “I deserve this” when we left. Darn tootin’ right!!!
He was as happy as I’ve ever seen him when we left, pleased how nice he’ll look in the family pictures, and how he can wear the beautiful sports coat to meetings.
He’s always been anti-fashion, bee-lining for sale or clearance only, as his wardrobe of faded neon clearance shirts will attest to. I always say I can find him in a crowd in those godawful shirts of his. The rest of his closet is Eddie Bauer polo shirts in Black blue or grey. That and a few jeans are the sum total of his wardrobe. I guess this is the male version of fat hiding tunics?
Now I’ll have to look for the best dressed man. Hoping he will treat himself to a new shirt there every two or three months and built up a small, choice wardrobe.
Maybe then I can get rid of some of the neon garb. 🫣
