I got out today for what I thought would be a short run after I got to the trail. When I got over there though the mountains were looking beautiful so I figured Hobbes and I would run out to see the river and take a picture of the mountains. Then I decided to go down further to get a better picture. Then I decided we would go down and around this alternative route but had to check out the river further and then the mountains that are further off in the distance. I ended up with 2.72mi walking warmup/cooldown and 4.6mi running. So far I have almost 24 miles for the month (23.89) - wow! more than I would have expected!
Pictures from the day under the splitThis was a huge mushroom growing in the neighbor's yard. Anyone know what it is? Is it edible?Planning to get out for a shorter run tomorrow. Another big storm is headed our way.
The beautiful mountains that caught my eye. Most prominent is Mt San Antonio
Egrets enjoying the muddy river water
Huge trash pile by the pump station that pulls the water from the river into the aquifer settlement ponds. It is at least 8ft tall and 15-20ft long with amazing things (chair! buckets, coolers, etc.) in it.
Closer picture of the mountains
Distant San Bernardino mountains and Mt San Gorgonio10 -
Good morning everyone!
Real struggle bus today. Got in a Half. Feel bleurgh.
Good luck today with the Half Sarah @martaindale6 -
@shanaber This was a huge mushroom growing in the neighbor's yard. Anyone know what it is? Is it edible? Paging @7lenny7. He foraged mushrooms while trail running from time to time. He'd probably know what it is.
Do you have access to the park(s) all 4 days?
The races don't get you a ticket or anything. You just get to run through the parks. I haven't gone since races started. Even an easy day in the parks add several miles of walking and that didn't seem like a good idea. But, I know people who go to parks after every race. IDK how they do it.
Is that Alvin and one of the other chipmunks on the medal?
It's Chip and Dale. The little acorn spins. They are my FIL favorite!5 -
Great run @shanaber . Love it when there is a reason to just keep going. Beautiful pictures also. That trash heap though. SMH.
@tarun_yadavA Great HM, especially if you still aren't feeling well. I hope you start to feeling better soon!
Congratulations on your HM time @martaindale ! You did great!3 -
January total: 32.1/80 miles run
1/1: 5 miles
1/2: 4.2 miles
1/5: 3.2 miles
1/6: 6.4 miles
1/7: 13.3 miles
Woo hoo, 3 runs done! It was a cold one this morning! Because we start so early, the temps haven't actually hit the lows for a couple hours. Today, it was cold but ok until about mile 8, at which point you could feel the drop. Everyone's breath started steaming and my lower arms and hands went numb. I made it a point to get a little water at every aid station even though I didn't really feel thirsty because of the cold. I may have slightly over hydrated as I had to stop by bathrooms twice along the way. But, at least I'm not in a deficit heading into tomorrow.
Pics today are: the castle in the dark - this race and the full run down main street in magic kingdom then circle around and run back through the castle. A lot of people line main street to cheer. It's so cool! The starting line And today's medal. Donald and Daisy slide across the front.9 -
Thanks @quilteryoyo! I had to keep reminding myself to slow down and save something for tomorrow. When it's cold I find it harder to take it easy.4
-
Another fantastic race @martaindale ! I wouldn't want to go to the parks either unless I was just running the 5K or 10K. Then maybe, but I would definitely have to save my energy for the races. I bet the park is exhausting on its own.
@shanaber I also thought that @7lenny7 might know about the mushroom.1 -
Wow @martaindale ! You really were speedy with that time and stopping twice to pee! Know that I woke up at 5:30 and at 7 this morning and were cheering you on. Love the pictures and that you get to run through the castle. I hope it's not quite as cold for you in the morning.2

Well done Sarah @martaindale ! Amazing!!! 🙌

@martaindale - CONGRATULATIONS!!! 🎉💖👏👏👏🎉 I love the photos and that you ran a half marathon SAVING some stuff for tomorrow. I bet there are not a lot of folks doing all of them? Or maybe there are but it's an amazing accomplishment.2

@penguinmama87
Thank you so much for the comment and the advice - I’m still trying to get up earlier to exercise, but you are exactly right the missing step for me is getting enough sleep - I’m working out in the evening and at least I feel some sense of accomplishment !5 -

Welcome @ptabibian ! Is that 500 miles on your ticker your goal for the year? You may already know this, since I don't know how much you are currently running, but don't increase your mileage too fast or you'll risk injury. Are you using a training plan to get ready for your half? Will this be your first? @Alphahowls gets up at 4 am, I think. Me? Nope. I am not a morning person.
Thank you for the comment and yes the mileage was too much! I changed it to 250miles for the year , I’m giving myself permission to slow down and build the habit. I was planning on running a 1/2 marathon (a second run but first was 10 yrs ago) in April but not sure if I’m going to be ready…Thanks for the community here.3 -
And off to a pretty good start for January.

My Fitbit was nagging me for 2 days Thursday and Friday to take a rest day so I finally caved yesterday and did only WUNs and WOGs keeping my HR lower. I still got my miles in for RTY but only gave myself RUNNING cred for a mile. So week 1 total almost 40 miles... Won't repeat that soon but it's nice to get ahead of the game early.

Amazing job @martaindale on your half! You are doing so great! Great pictures. Good luck with the full tomorrow!
I hadn't done a double digit run since the marathon, so knocked out a half at a pretty easy pace. Felt (mostly) good.

@martaindale your pics look really cool, and you're doing great!2

We're visiting my mother, and I love to run in the woods up here. Although the plan was for a couple of hours on a flat trail down the valley beside the railway line, we then planned a daytrip to Gibraltar for today that meant I needed to be home by 10 at the latest. Sunrise is around 8.30 here atm. I had thought to bring my headlamp just in case, but there are houses and farms along that flat route and dogs come out of them... not something I wanted to have to cope with in the dark. So, I got up at 6.30, had a couple of coffees and a banana and left at 7.30 to head up the mountain behind the village. There were a couple of unsettling moments when my lamp picked out two glowing eyes and then a pair of horns, but it was just a cow standing in the middle of the trail. There was another further up lying down, another heartstopping moment but they just gave me confused looks 🤣 I managed to time it so that I reached the top moments before the sun popped out from behind the hills on the other side of the valley. So beautiful. Few photos on Strava. I probably came back down too fast, then we walked quite a lot in Gib. Took the cablecar to the top of the Rock but walked back down. My quads are not happy. Better take it easy this week as race is on the 15th. Trouble is, my new running buddy wants to go up another mountain on Monday...
I wonder whether my physio can hear cash registers ringing in his ears yet
