I have the same problem. I absolutely hate driving and don't often have a car to drive anyway (my husband takes it to work), hence not getting into the mountains anywhere near as often as I should. I 'can' run up there from home, but it means at least 22km plus whatever I do once I'm up there.
@martaindale yes, now we've decided against doing the series and I'm over the initial disappointment I'm quite relieved, especially about the first one (very technical) and the last one (very steep).
I have, however, accidentally signed up for a 24km with 1175m on 12 Feb. And a flat 5k on 11 March. Oops!
I'm probably going to regret the closest one as I'm not really trained for it and have no idea what the route is like, but the cutoff time is super generous (like 5 hours!) and people who have run it before tell me it isn't too tough. We shall see.
@spl8 when the pandemic hit, @polskagirl01 and I were both due to run HMs literally days later. Here in Spain we were put into a strict lockdown, Poland was a little less dramatic. We wanted to run our races, even though obviously they'd been cancelled, so we synchronised our watches and I ran mine on my treadmill and she ran hers in the countryside with her son on his bike :-) There was a virtual race company that made an 'I ran it anyway' medal which we both got to remember it.
@laurz9191 from your description I would say there were lots of reasons why the first HM distance felt so bad. Well done on the latest one! Always nice when a long run feels good :-)

@Scott6255 I managed to get the mileage to complete the RTY in 2021 but it really was too much just running and soured me to the point where my mileage in 2022 was a lot lower. This year I am combining walking and running to get to the 2023 mark which is more reasonable for us normal humans. I like that Run The Year ap sums things up for you and gives you targets. Also the teams are fun.
Glad you enjoyed 6th street. TO be honest I haven't been down there in probably 20 plus years - mostly because I don't drink and the crowd is pretty young.3 -

Tested the water with a short run today. Nothing hurt but my legs weren’t really working right. My stride was weird. Took about 1.5 miles before it started feeling normal. I got a few little cramps in my calves but those worked themselves out. I can definitely feel the residual fatigue.7 -
@martaindale yeah I'm sure that was tough getting back to running, but take it easy and it will come back to you (like riding a bike) 😉
@SummerSkier it was the 1st time I've been to 6th st. and probably the last. It WAS a much younger crowd, but I was with a much younger crowd (my kids). But they seemed to enjoy it 🙂
I did over 2300 miles last year combined running and walking, so wanted to see if I could do 2023 just running, but I'm just not built for that I guess.
Just did 8 treadmill miles to get in some work.

I ran 5.5 miles today. The weather was just about perfect. It was an uneventful run, but nice. I now have 515 miles on my shoes. Luckily for me I ordered new shoes and they came in today.

@SummerSkier - I'm sorry things didn't work out with the pony and that the girl's mom understands. Your mileage is so impressive! Don't know how you are able to get out there and run every single day.
@Scott6255 - When I have done Run the Year I have always attempted to do it in kilometers because I knew there was no way I could hit the miles required.
Welcome back @noblsheep! I was wondering where you had gone off to. I hope you are feeling better now! Love the video! I do wonder if she had micro spikes or screw shoes to keep from slipping. I did see her slip a time to two but it looks so icy.
@martaindale - Getting registered for the Disney races is SO tough. I was pretty excited and surprised when I got in for the (inaugural) Star Wars race here. It was really a fun experience though and worth the challenges.
@Laurz9191 - So true about pictures of kids! Great job getting a HM in today! Glad this one felt so much better!
This morning was a great day for a run. It was in the low 40's when I got up so I delayed a bit to let it warm up before heading out. It was sunny and 50F with wind but the sun felt so great after so much rain. The river is still high and rushing but all the birds were back on the pond side. Saw a hummingbird
I see pretty much every time I run there but was able to snap a couple of pictures this time. Also saw a Great Blue Heron out by the waters edge and a CA turkey vulture sunning itself in a tree with its wings spread out. Also the mountains were spectacular!
After my run I headed off to see the podiatrist. I've been waiting a while to get in, like since October. I have a bunion that has gotten really sore and an ingrown toenail on the same big toe. The nail will get fixed in March after we go on vacation with friends and family. The fix for the bunion is surgery. The surgery sounds intense and has a 3-4 month recovery before I will be able to run again. The first month I am not allowed to even walk on it. There isn't anything else they can do to fix it or alleviate the pain/discomfort and it will continue to worsen. Interestingly it is pretty much all caused by genetics. He also said the pronation I experience with that foot is from the deformation of that bone and joint. Thanks to my trainer from a few years ago, I am very conscious of my foot turning out and try to keep it straight especially when I run. I also suspect that it may be the imbalance impacting my hip and knee on the opposite side. I'm thinking about pushing the surgery off to the summer but keep having doubts about having it at all. I was really hoping for a nonsurgical fix to just make it stop hurting. My PCP warned me that surgery was the likely solution so I wasn't too surprised. At least this doc didn't try to convince me that I shouldn't be running or working out 'at my age' like the last one did.6 -

@Scott6255 @SummerSkier I really loved 6th! You're right - it's a young crowd. But found some of the live music places to be a bit less 18-25-ey.
The food trucks tho... at the end of the night to soak up all the booze! Sooo good... I must've eaten about 8 of these insanely good Tacos from this Taco guy Food truck! 🤤
@SummerSkier - ouch 😣 so sorry to hear about the foot pain and having surgery on bunion/toe. 😞
No consolation at all....But I have one toenail thats purple/black. I think it's gonna fall off.
Could only be described as: imagine a Dad of a 3yr old girl. Said Dad has one too many beers and a heavy lunch and naps on couch. Wife/3yr old think it's funny to paint toenails while Dad sleeps. They start. Get one nail done. Then Dad abruptly wakes up and is all 'WTH', 'Not cool!!'... Has one purple-y black nail.... And doesn't know where acetone/remover is. Looks hideous.

I met two friends for a run before work this morning. It was 46F at 5:00 am – great running weather!
@spl8 – I’m sorry you didn’t get to run the NYC Half Marathon but good for you for doing your own race. I ran a half in NYC in April one year. It was two loops in Central Park and I loved it! I was supposed to run the Marine Corp Marathon in 2020. Since it was also cancelled, like you, some friends and I did it virtually. It was a different experience than what we had planned but thanks to the support of other friends and a retired Marine Corp officer, it was a special experience nonetheless.
@SummerSkier – Sorry the pony did not work out but I’m glad you recognize it is not a good fit for you rather than taking a chance and getting hurt.

@shanaber – Beautiful pictures of your scenery. Thanks for sharing. I had a friend who had bunion surgery in 2020 and she was able to train for and run our virtual marathon in the fall. The procedure that she had was relatively new instead of the traditional surgery.
@Tarun_yadavA - Black and blue toenails (and missing ones) – that’s how you know you’re a runner! But, maybe you need different fitting shoes??

Opted for a pre-work walk this morning since I ran later in the day yesterday. I'm headed to the rock climbing gym for the first time in a few months today. I have lost all my calluses and quite a bit of my upper body strength so it's probably going to be a short session. Gotta toughen that skin back up. They have a yoga class tonight too, so I'm thinking I will pop in there since I won't last that long climbing.

Today's run was fantastic! It was 59°F when I got up and it was overcast. The weather app said there was a 19% chance of rain. But it wasn't stormy and it was nice so I set off for my first run in my new shoes. I don't know if it was the weather or the shoes, but I ran faster than my usual weekday runs. Yesterday I ran 5.5 miles with a pace of 11:24. Today I ran 6 miles with a pace of 10:30. I just felt great. I felt a few raindrops during the run and then as I was almost home it started raining. I was going to run 5.5 like yesterday, but I decided to loop around a couple of blocks to get the extra half mile. I love runs like that where you just feel so good. And I got my individual 100 mile bib for RTY today too. Plus I got up and got going pretty good this morning so I actually had time to run 6 miles, do 15 minutes of yoga and get to work on time. 😊
@shanaber Love the pictures! Sorry it looks like you will have to have surgery.

@spl8 yes speed will come naturally as you get fitter and get more miles in.

@spl8 Glad you had friends who ran the HM with you. I hope the bradycardia doesn't cause you any issues. The pace will come with time and the more you run. Having said that, I'm still as slow as a turtle in molasses, but I'm okay with that.
Glad you are feeling better @noblsheep . I hope you are able to start in on the C25K.

@martaindale I'm glad you had a nice camping weekend with the family. I hope you find a HM you can run before it gets too hot. Great recovery run today! Glad nothing felt too bad.

@shanaber Love the pictures from your run. Sorry about the surgery, but glad it didn't come as a complete surprise. I just hope that, once you have it, you recover quickly and you don't have any other issues with it.

I didn't post yesterday because the internet was acting up and I was short on time. I did manage a 2 mile walk on the treadmill while watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
Today, I went for a walk during my break at daycare. I hadn't planned said exercise, so I only had my older running shoes which I wear to work most days. I had to quit running in them because they were hurting my legs/knees. So, I didn't even venture any running, but a fast walk. I managed a 3.1 mile walk in 44:25 minutes, for an average pace of 14:20 min/mile (4.2 mph). I was surprised at the pace, so wasn't trusting Garmin. I used map my run after I got home, and it showed that I actually went further, so I'll with Garmin. I guess it's more accurate than I thought. My Avg HR was 124 bpm with a max of 151 bpm, when walking up the biggest hill back to the daycare.
It was 57F (13.9C) and sunny, with 88% humidity. Between the humidity and the sun with little shade on my route, I sweated waaaay more than I was expecting. Again, the walk wasn't planned, so I didn't have any clothes to change into. When I finished, my shirt was really wet about half way down. I hated to go back into the classroom wet, but was going to if I needed to. Fortunately, one of the other teachers had an extra shirt I was able to borrow for the afternoon.
Tonight, I believe that pace, because my muscles are feeling it.

Hello everyone!
Yesterday I decided to go to the gym to do some back/core work, so I got in 6.2km in my Z1/Z2 heart rate on the treadmill to warm up . Then I did a bunch of lunges among other things, which I haven't done for ages. I have been having a slight pain in my lower back and read that planks, lunges, and co. would be a possible solution to work on strengthening the muscle groups in my back. Today I am really feeling the lunges and am hobbling around quite a bit. I am sure, with practice my muscles will strengthen and adjust and I hope that is what my back needs to support me better when I am running. I still went on an easy 8km run this morning. The ground here is frozen with frost and it even snowed earlier. It was really beautiful and I wanted to take a picture to post, but then I realized I had left my phone in the car. Maybe next time... I was very glad not to have to slide through the forest mud for a change, even though it is oh so cold outside.
I am happy though that tomorrow is a rest day. My legs in particular are looking forward to it .
@shanaber I am sorry to hear that you need surgery. Hopefully though, that will mean that in the future you don't have any more pain.
@spl8 You are doing great! Slow and steady .

I don't mind running around my neighborhood, especially right now as it is still dark at 5pm, but I am lucky in that a short distance away is access to our river valley trail system. I can walk in about 5 minutes to my usual starting point and depending on which way I run, be in the trails in about 5-6 minutes more. There is about 160 km of trails, just have to make my way back
@quilteryoyo thank you for your kind word, I'm starting to feel stronger after now completing my 20 minute run. Not as fast as I used to be, but that will come, especially when I can take the ice grips off my shoes
@noblsheep thanks for sharing the video, haven't had a chance to watch, but added to my YT watch list.
Yesterday was a 20 minute run with my long run on Saturday. I'm aiming for 5k, including my cool down.

I love that you accidentally signed up for races. I've definitely done that a time or [more than] two. The pictures of you running on the trails were great.

I didn't have to work today, so was able to get my run in late morning. Even though it's really nice out, it is wet and rained this morning, so I did a treadmill session. The plan called for a fast finish run. I did it, with a little modification. I did a run/walk of 5x(4/1 min at 4.5/3.8 mph), 5 min at 5.0 mph, 2 min at 3.8 mph, then ended with 5:37 min at 4.2 mph. That totaled 2.75 miles at an average pace of 13:41 min/mile. Avg HR was 132 and max was 152 bpm.

Yes, he came home yesterday. I was just drifting off to sleep around 9 pm last night and mom called and wanted me to come over. Thankfully, they only live about 5 minutes away. He was in quite a bit of abdominal pain on one side, shortened breathing, cold sweat. We were worried about internal bleeding or infection and thought we were going have to return to the hospital but around midnight he finally got in a position where it didn't hurt. I spent the night with them and got a little sleep before coming back home and getting ready for work. The pain hasn't returned today. He probably just overdid it yesterday with coming home.
I had strength training on my schedule for today but I was just too tired when I got home this evening. Plus, I had a doctor's appointment and lab work this afternoon and I was just done! :-)
Nice power walk you got in there at lunch yesterday and an outside run today!4 -
@Teresa502 glad your Dad came home and he got through the night and the pain finally subsided.
Got in 10 miles this evening. Felt easier than yesterday's 4 miles.

I forgot to post my run yesterday. I ran 5 miles. It wasn't as great as Wednesday's run, but it was still a pretty good run. It was cooler at 41°F feels like 39°. Today will be a rest day, but I am planning to do an hour of yoga.

Another short run today. It was much cooler and my legs felt much better. My stride felt normal right out of the gate and I felt like I could keep going, but I didn’t. Making good decisions over here and allowing time for recovery. It’s supposed to be rainy all day here tomorrow so I may push that run to Sunday. The flexibility of not having a training plan is AMAZING!!7 -

I was tired and hungry today, so decided on a wun. I only ran enough to get my HR up to close to 130 bpm, then walked until it went down to close to 110 bpm, then ran again. I went 2.50 miles in 37:37 min for a 4.0 mph overall pace.
That makes 57.67/70 mile goal. (I can't get the ticker factory to cooperate again today - my internet is going in and out.)

My sanity keeps me pushing it. Two kinds of pain in my dictionary
Dull/achy - keep going, adjust accordingly
Sharp/gasping - adjust gait, pace, step, stride, then start checking in with body parts
Yes, Tuesday's run, coming up the hill with Running Partner A, quick stabbing pain to the hip, started adjusting stride and it eased out. Later in day, I could not cross my leg, really sore. Ice, heat, rinse repeat, keep running...
Amazing, not sure, possible just stubborn stupid. Either way, going to keep running...
