@AlphaHowls Glad you are ok! It seems like you have had a pretty tough week between you hip and fall! I hope things will only get better from here! Good job powering through! You are an inspiration in not giving up when things are hard!
I was super excited for my gym session and treadmill run yesterday (yuhuu a day where I didn’t have to be out in the cold). Alas, life had other plans. My birthday boy now has norovirus and one of my other kids also is home sick with some other mystery illness. So it looks like I won’t be working out again until the weekend. Unless I get sick, in which case it will be even longer . I am really happy I got my long run in in Tuesday and I will try to do some body weight exercises at home today!6 -
Morning all.
Got in 4.Rest day tomorrow (ahead of longer run on weekend).
@shanaber - well done on 100 for the month! 🥳
@Laurz9191 - Norovirus. 🤢💩 Yikes. Hope your kids get better soon (and you don't get it!!!!).
@AlphaHowls - hope you're healing up. Amazed you still run Halves even with the injury!
@quilteryoyo - as always, thanks for the kind words and encouragement! 😊
@SummerSkier - haha, no. No marathon this weekend. Tapering now. So, long ish but not THAT long. I'm treating the upcoming Marathon 2andabit weeks from now as a 'second' one (which technically it might be?). Been googling a lot of "how to run your second marathon faster" runnersworld type articles. So all encourage some midweek Speedwork - which is what I did yesterday.
@teresa502 - hope your Dad is okay, after having been readmitted 😞🙏4 -
Nice running @Scott6255 and @kgirlhart !
Thanks @shanaber . I'm glad you are feeling better and had a nice run. I hope the winds aren't too bad today. Congrats on exceeding your goal!
@Laurz9191 So sorry that your children are sick. I hope they get to feeling better quickly and that you manage to stay well.
Nice sleasy run @tarun_yadavA ! Hope the toe feels better.

It was freezing this morning at 30°F feels like 27°. But it was clear and not windy, so it was a pretty morning. The grass looked all sparkly and there were lots of stars. I ran 6 miles. It was mostly uneventful. I did see 4 large dogs roaming around, but I went around the block and they didn't seem to notice me.

My dad came home from the hospital late Tuesday and seems to be doing well. Thanks for everyone’s kind thoughts and prayers.
@AlphaHowls – Sorry about your fall and amazing that you continued on. So glad you saved the face!

I did 5.25 km part trail/part streets. Felt good. Hoping this can become my typical distance again.8 -
It warmed up a little bit today so I got to go outside for 10.14 miles.
@SummerSkier I haven't officially abandoned the RTY goal, but I just don't see myself keeping up this volume for another 11 months 😳

This is the first month in a really long time where I haven’t been following some sort of plan. When I’m on a plan I put the runs on my calendar like an appointment. Easy to keep track of and creates a sort of accountability to fit it into the day. While I am basically back to my 5 day a week schedule, it is really loose. In a way, that feels nice. But it is creating havoc in my scheduling. Yesterday I planned to run after work but after I got home ended up killing too much time then was left with a short window of available time before a series of meetings starting at 3:15. So ended up with a very short run. Did better this morning.
I think this weekend I will sit down and map something out for the next month at least. I still haven’t decided whether or not to try for a HM PR this season. My legs feel good overall but my HR is still higher than it should be at these paces, so I know I’m still recovering. This morning’s run would have felt super easy at pretty much any point over the last few months, but today I could feel my legs fatiguing a little towards the end. I really don’t know if I can be in race form in a month. Any later and it will just be too hot to realistically plan for a PR attempt. I think I’ll build out a plan to get me to the HM. That way, if things turn the corner and I decide to race, I am ready. But, if it seems out of reach I will transition into something else for spring and plan some trail races or something.
Also, I underestimated my return to run this month. I have already exceeded my goals and 100 miles of running is in reach so I’m going to shoot for that since 100 miles a month minimum was my main 2023 goal.6 -
@martaindale don't feel bad...we still have neighbors (more than 2) with nativity scenes and Christmas inflatables in their front yards
Still having inflatables up is weird. I mean, those just collapse and get shoved in a box, right? I have never used inflatables so maybe they are more complicated than that, but they seem like the easiest break down ever. At least our front yard is empty. I closed the blinds in our front windows so people couldn’t see the trees in the front rooms anymore. We got 4 down. 4 to go. It takes a while to get them all down.2 -
Hello Everyone,
18 years ago (time really goes by fast), I ran my first and only marathon. Today I’ve just gone ahead and signed up for my second!!!! No, it’s not any time soon like @tarun_yadavA ’s. It will be in September in the city next to mine. It’s a two loop course and the first loop is run together with all the half marathoners.
I’ve already mentioned that my first marathon wasn’t that great of an experience. I was studying abroad and wanted to get back into shape after doing so much socialising -AND- see Paris, hence marathon with basically no training. I really hit the wall at the end and had to walk several of the last miles. This time though feels different and I feel really excited and much more prepared.
Today, still no running, as the kids are still sick. I was able to sneak out for a walk to buy groceries and tomorrow I will be able to get a run in .
@martaindale That sounds like a good plan to plan for the HM . Who knows, maybe you will figure out while training if that it is truly what you want to be focusing on, OR, whether you would rather do shorter events at the moment. Either way, it sounds like a good plan to work out when you can squeeze your runs into your schedule.
@Scott6255 I’m glad you haven’t officially given up the RTY yet! In any case you’ve gotten off to a good start!
@spl8 It sounds like things are going very good! Keep it up!
@Teresa502 I’m glad to hear your father is home now!5 -
My internet was acting up again yesterday, so I didn't get to comment or post. Trying to catch up tonight, if it continues to work.
@kgirlhart Nice chilly run yesterday. I love it when there's a huge frost and everything is all sparkly.
@Teresa502 Nice run in the cold wind. So glad that your dad is home and doing okay.
Nice run @spl8 !
Nice outdoor run @Scott6255 .
@martaindale You are doing great with your recovery! Hahaha that you closed the curtains so no one can see that your trees are still up. It is a lot of work getting everything packed back up.
@Laurz9191 Sorry your kids are still sick. Glad you haven't caught whatever it is and that you will be able to get in a run tomorrow. Congrats on signing up for your second marathon. Sounds like you have a plan and this one is going to be so much better than the first.

Yesterday, I had a text from the daycare when I got up that they needed me to work from 12-5:30. Since I had slept in, I didn't have time to exercise before I left. I had some tummy issues as I was getting ready and almost didn't make it to work, but I did. No more real issues, but my tummy just wasn't quite normal the rest of the day. So, when I got home, I went down for a treadmill wun. I was only going to run enough to keep my HR above 110. Normally, that takes a lot. Yesterday, I only ran about 2 min the first mile and then didn't have too. That's not normal for my walking HR, so I chalked it up to my body still working on getting my tummy back to where it should be.
Today, I didn't work, so went for a planned easy run on the treadmill before lunch. Unfortunately, it was sneasy. Just felt like I wasn't getting enough oxygen to my muscles. I did run/walk for 4/1 min at 4.2-4.5, 4.2,4.3/3.8 mph, then finished the run at 4.4 mph. Average pace was 14:09 min/mile. Average HR was 126, and max was 145 bpm...one little spot on the graph. Most was below 140 bpm. Ran 2.50 miles and walked one for warm up and cool down.

@Laurz9191 yayyy! Well done you , for signing up! 🥳
I swear this group is so online infectious 😂
Awesome tho! I'm sure you'll kill it 😊 (unlike me - you have lots of time to prepare and get in the zone!)
PS: hope kids get better soon

@quilteryoyo sorry you didn't have a great run and it felt hard.

Morning all.
Long run to end week1 (of 3week) Taper.
Did 17.5 miles. 33.5 for the week (~80% of last week)Resting up Sunday, Monday. Tuesday tune-up, Wednesday speedwork, Thursday 'sl-easy'
Anybody got any suggestions? ->
Did I start off too fast? Really scared of going too fast to start with, then gassing out.
Based on 17.5 two weeks ago, and full 26.2 last weekend - thought I'd do gels at 13, 17 and 21.
Took one with me today. Had at 13. Feel it helped.
Any suggestions?

@Laurz9191 I’ll be cheering you on as you train for your marathon. This group was so supportive when I was training for mine. Hope your family starts feeling better soon.
@tarun_yadavA Race signups are contagious for sure!1 -
@tarun_yadavA Not a marathoner but maybe you needed more fuel sooner to keep the doldrums away. You could start at an 8:40 pace and try to maintain the whole way but not sure things really work totally that way with longer races. Nice weekend run tho! What did your partner in crime say?1
-
@tarun_yadavA Nice long run. Did you mean Canada "weather" instead of "water?" I just noticed today how flat your route is. Is the marathon also flat? I obviously am not a marathoner, so no advice there. It does look like you may have started out a little too fast, but you had enough in you to pick it back up at the end. You did great in my book.0
-
@tarun_yadavA really nice long run. Quite possible you started out a little too fast, but for the real marathon it's going to be hard to keep yourself in check with all the excitement. But try your best to keep it feeling easy for the first couple of miles. And yes I would also say you would probably help yourself by taking gels much sooner than at the 13 mile point. Personally I take 1/2 a gel every 3 miles when racing. It's all very person specific, but try fueling before you need to. Good luck!1
-
@Scott6255 - good shout Sir! Could factor in a fourth gel. Find that I get dry mouth from them. Looks like I need one at around the 10-11 mark. I suppose one advantage on race day would be that water is freely available frequently rather than me sipping out of a bottle.
@quilteryoyo - haha, thank you! 😊
Canada Water is the area in London I live in. Basically the name of the Tube station.
Route I'm going on is flat; much like the route on race day.
@SummerSkier - ran solo today! 😊1 -
@alphahowls - I am so glad you were able to dodge the cars and weren't hit! I hope the injuries from the fall though aren't too bad. I rarely take anything when I am running but I don't go over 10 miles so unless it is really hot and humid out I don't think it's necessary to fuel or hydrate. I am excited for the race folks and we need a bib and link to follow you along Tarun!
Scott I find my motivation for running the years waxes and wanes. You have a good start so if you jump out ahead of it mileage wise this month you never know.
I think I will hit 150 out of 120 planned for Jan but with Feb being a short month with the iffiest weather here in Tx not sure what the goal will be. For RTY I am working to get 200 miles per month total walking and running I think. I have 41 walking miles so far this month so on track. I am also pretty excited that I have found some shoes which I can play tennis in and my back doesn't hurt. I am not extremely agile on the court yet (they have wedge heels!) but I kind of like playing old duffer hacker tennis where we just hit groundstrokes mostly to each other. LOL.
Todays run was in the mist but it was almost 50 so it wasn't bad at all for a 7 miler. My polar chest strap which the past few days has been stuck on 80-90 bpm for the first few miles today got stuck at 180. I was barely running and it gave me a warning that my HR was 196. I checked my fitbit and it had 135 so I know it was misbehaving again. Probably need to get more gel to put under the connection vs using water. Anyway, when I stopped at mile 4 to take a rest room break, it finally realized I was not sprinting and dropped back into the 150's for the rest of the run until I added some pace. 😏 tech 😏 it's nice but it's definitely not gospel.

@alphahowls the only thing I was thinking about the other day was DID EITHER OF THOSE CARS STOP to check on you? They had to have seen your lights and seen you dive off the road. Glad you weren't injured and managed to keep from smashing your face.0

HAHHAHAHAH no. As I entered the ditched, blinded by the oncoming, the other was then already passing, so they were both gone as I navigated the ditch and then missed the lip of the road. All in a matter of seconds.

@tarun_yadavA - First I have never run a full marathon but I have run many halfs (28 in 10 years) so my knowledge/experience is only from the shorter distance.
I could not use gels for the reason you stated. My mouth tends to be very dry anyway and the gels just made it worse. I found the gummy types (NUUN or my favorite SKRATCH) worked better for me and I always had some water along with them.
Regardless of water on the course I found it helpful to have my own water with me because then it was available when I wanted/needed it not just every few miles on the course.
Finally if you have a goal finish time in mind for the race you might look into if there will be pacers. You don't have to stay with them the entire time but they are there to keep you from going out too fast and staying on pace. Most are pretty good at keeping you motivated and distracted as well.3 -
@AlphaHowls that is a great song! And it describes you perfectly!
@tarun_yadavA one other thing that could help you from hitting that wall....the week leading up to the marathon you should be eating carb loaded meals. That build up will help carry you in the late miles.
Another Saturday, another 15 miles 😁 Was feeling tired and achy when I got up this morning, but after I started running I felt good. The first 8 miles were really nice, but the last 7 felt pretty hard. I need to pace and fuel better.

Hahaha Thanks for clearing that up @tarun_yadavA . I guess I probably should have know that. I'm horrible with geography and anything related.
@SummerSkier You are doing great with your running and walking. Sorry your technology was not cooperating today.
You amaze me @AlphaHowls ! Very pretty picture of the sunrise. That is a perfect song for you.
Way to hang in there when the going got tough today @Scott6255 ! You're doing great.
Hardest part of my run today was getting started. It was really nice out with 55F (12.8C) and sunny. I put on shorts and short sleeves and went out for driveway laps. It was a little cool, but didn't feel too bad once I got going. I had just gotten home from taking a stroll with mom, so didn't do a warm up walk. I ran 3.3 miles in 45:00 min for a 13:38 min/mile avg pace. Avg HR was 146 with a max of 156 bpm. I walked a mile for cool down, so got in 4.30 miles total in just over an hour.
5 -
@AlphaHowls - absolutely love that reel and it is so fitting for you! Going to add the song to my playlist and will think of you every time it comes up! You truly are Unstoppable!
@quilteryoyo - your post made me think about how temperatures affect all of us and how we feel cold (or hot) so differently. It was low 60's here today but I was not out in shorts and short sleeves. I even considered if I needed a lightweight vest just to keep the wind from making my core feel cold. In the end I just wore my thin summer temps running shirt and while a bit cold at first, like you it ended up being fine. At 55F though I am pretty sure I would have needed the vest or a heavier shirt.
It was a gorgeous day out today and I am so glad I got my run in! Managed just over 5 miles of running doing 60/30 intervals and another 2.5 miles walking to and from the trail. Oh and I decided to pull out a new pair of shoes I have been holding in reserve since buying them during the Xero shoe sale last year. They are pretty comfortable and I wish I had gotten 2 pairs. I like the fit better than the HFS that run a little smaller. They are purple! It is supposed to turn cold and rainy again for the next couple of days and then be nice again. I just need a short run to get over 100 miles so surely I should be able to do that either in the rain on Monday or Tuesday when it 'should' be nicer.
6 -
Wow, I can't keep up again!
@tarun_yadavA I'm also in the 'you must fuel earlier' camp. I ran my first HM on jelly babies... 1 every 15 minutes if I remember right. And I will still grab a handful of jelly type sweets from aid stations. And yeah, carb loading is important!3
