Hi all.
Training for a marathon... By running a marathon! π€¦
(Though for me, mentally/pyschologically, I think I needed to know I could do the distance. And leave nothing to chance on Marathon day!)
Very very sore right now. Last 3 miles or so were horrible. Felt I was dragging concrete legs8 -
@AlphaHowls sorry to hear about your hip!
@Teresa502 Glad to hear your Dad is out of hospital.
@martaindale did you say you ran your last couple of miles the fastest?? How??2 -
-
@AlphaHowls I hope that the pain is very short lived. Be careful.
@tarun_yadavA I understand how you feel about making sure you can run the distance before the race. I do the same thing and try to avoid plans that don't have you running the actual distance first....or at least close to it. Not sure doing it this soon was the smartest thing though. I guess there's no need to talk to the doctor, or your sister now since you've already done it. I hope you are able to recover well and quickly.
@Mari33a Yeah, I don't like running in that kind of weather either. I don't mind the rain if I get caught in it, but I don't like starting running when it is raining. Do you have access to a treadmill you could use if the weather is horrible for weeks on end? Great job getting in a run once the weather cleared.
3 -
@quilteryoyo haha, thank you! will check in with sister tomorrow. Hopefully all good for the next 24 hours π€2
-
Yeah @tarun_yadavA that was an incredible feat, and I get why you did it, but virtually no marathon training plan has you running a full marathon during training. That is just too hard on the body, and supposedly after about 3 hours you don't get any benefit from it. But huge kudos for going the distance!!!!!!6
-
@tarun_yadavA WOW! π±π±π±π±π±π± I was wondering if you did that today from your newsfeed post. Did your friend run with you also? That is crazy. I hope you did not injure yourself. Your wife and sister are going to kill you. I think @martaindale was able to increase her pace at the end was because she did a long training map to get to her race and also because I think sometimes at the start of the race you are slower to make sure you have enough left and traffic of other runners. π3
-
@Scott6255 you're right. Not in anyone's manual. Today was meant to be our 'big run'. It was going to be a 20+ one. Closer I got, I thought let me just get it out of the way. So I don't have to worry about 'Can I finish it?' on the day. I'm not gonna move much for the next couple of days.
@SummerSkier yeah. I ran with my buddy. I am my own worst enemy. Today was just about getting a 'big one' distance wise. Cold, icy in a few places... Not a 'go fast' kind of day. So I made it a point not to accelerate and go pacy. But then some of it was me thinking 'have something left in the tank' at the end. Pointless because I felt totally gassed out by 22. The last four miles were horrible. Dragging concrete legs along. Mentally, every little thing was aggravating me. (The route, around Regents Park, goes around London zoo - and as the day went on, the Zoo had opened, just people [kids!] loitering on the pavement. Having to accelerate/slow down around people... At miles 22, 25 when I would go past... Wanted to either shout or just plain cry!).
Would it have even worse struggling-wise, had I sped up for the first third of it? I don't know. π€·
I had iso gels... At around 16 and 19.
(Did eat before running... About half hour before... Half banana, oats drenched in oatmilk..... Thinking: maybe coulda perhaps eaten a whole one and more oats. Also, not walking 0.7M to the Tube station?! I don't know π€· ).
Plenty of food for thought for the next 3 weeks.
(And yes- have a taper plan in place too π )5 -
I was so shocked by the marathon man today I forgot to post an update.π€£π
Managed to get my 200 mile badge yesterday for RTY which is what I am aiming for 10 miles per day avg including both walking and running and steps. Almost at 104 out of 120 goal for the month so on target. My RTY shows a comparison to my mileage in 2021 which is funny. The ONLY way I could possibly run the entire thing was to do some 2 per runs but I decided those were too hard on my system so am focusing on a run in the morning and 2 ea 1 mile walks or a walk and tennis the rest of the day.
5 -
I'm glad you have a taper plan @tarun_yadavA ! Hope your legs aren't too sore tomorrow/tonight.
Great running @SummerSkier !
Today, I did a "long" run on the treadmill. I was on the struggle bus today. Things just felt off and my legs didn't want to cooperate, so I adjusted and got it done. I did a run walk of 4/1 min for the first 30 min, then for 3/2 min for the next 35 min, and ended running at 4.2 mph for 6:20 min. So you don't have to do the math, that adds up to 1:11:20 min for 5.0 miles. Avg pace was 14:16 min/mile or 4.2 mph. My avg HR was 131 with a max of 143 bpm. I also walked a mile total, at 3.8 mph, for warm up and cool down.

Hello everyone and Happy New Year!
I am excited to be back. Woohoo! Let's get started on our new journey to better health.3 -
@tarun_yadavA
I think itβs cool that you went for it today, even if it is unconventional. I know you are still trying to figure out fueling and stuff for when you really put yourself βto the testβ. I hope you can recover quickly. Itβs good that you have as running partner as crazy as you are to do these things with!
Today I had a tempo run. Yesterday and the day before I hadnβt really been able to walk because of the lunges I did, but to my surprise, when I woke up my legs were pretty much back to normal. I also identified my left leg being significantly weaker (more sore) than my right, so I definitely think I have an imbalance that I can work on to correct. It was below freezing outside, so I wasnβt really looking forward my run, but the run went well until my watch died a little over 2 km away from my house . I was a bit bummed about that, since I knew that it was low battery when I left and I was listening to music on it. So I will say I got 11.5 km in for sure . Tomorrow I get to throw a three year old a birthday party, so I donβt think Iβll have time for a run.5 -
Didn't look at my watch at all until the last 1/2 mile. Lost track of milage, but thought I was at least at 13 and felt like I was going about 9:30 - 10:00 pace. So I was surprised to see I was at 15 miles @ 9:20 π If I do 3 miles tomorrow I will hit 50 miles this week, the highest mileage week ever!

@Laurz9191 thank you! π
Still figuring stuff out. 3 week tapering now.
(My friend -he's run several marathons- pretty crazy! lol.
Put all my faith and trust into a crazy guy coaching me! )
Hope you have fun tomorrow at the birthday party! π (Mine are a bit older - 14 and 8)

Welcome @lharling39 .
@Laurz9191 Glad you had a good run, once you got started. Getting out the door is often the hardest part of the run. Happy Birthday to the 3 year old! Have fun at the party.
Great run @Scott6255 . Three miles should be easy for you.

Another run done
@AlphaHowls - Hope your hip is getting better, your mileage is so impressive!
@quilteryoyo - No I don't have a treadmill but I got a spin bike in Sept 2019 which I really like. I don't mind rain, its strong wind that gets me..

I met a friend for a 10-mile run yesterday morning. She ran the first 7 with me and I felt good so I went on for 3 more on my own. It was 27F when we started but by the end the sun had popped out and it was a little bit warmer. It was raining early this morning but now itβs just cloudy and overcast. Iβm at the hospital again with my dad (more info in the spoiler). Hoping to get out for a walk some time today. Great running everyone β thanks for the inspiration!
Anyone else having issues with Garmin server outage?I had to bring my dad back to the ER on Friday morning. He has a hematoma in the muscles of his abdominal wall. Unfortunately, the surgeon who removed the scar tissue last Friday was unaware that another doctor started giving him a high dose of blood thinner via shots in the stomach the day after surgery, twice a day until he was discharged on Wednesday, followed up by pill form at home. This exacerbated the bleeding. If his hemoglobin count drops below 7 they will need to give him a blood transfusion. It is currently at 8.7. Another procedure to stop the bleeding is also a possibility. Thankfully, the pain he was experiencing when I brought him to the ER has subsided and he has been able to get some rest. Thanks for all your prayers and concern.8 -

If the name fits... apparently it does! Sounds like you knew it might not be recommended, but for your situation, the mental boost was important to you. I hope you are one of the lucky ones who can get away with this style of training. Looking at some of your other feats (the 20-miler out of the blue, very few rest days, etc), you might be ok. I remember @PastorVincent frequently did things and then told us he doesn't advise we do them π
β‘οΈImportant: At this point, I don't think there is any additional training that will help you complete the real race. TAPER for real now. How you recover will determine how the big day goes.
I got back yesterday from a week-long holiday near the Tatry mountains with my husband. Lots of snow. I did very little physical activity, but did manage to get out for a few short walks, a dip in a cold river on the Poland-Slovakia border, helped briefly with snow removal, and was basically lazy all week.View from our room.
/\ Basically the top half of this picture is Slovakia, and the bottom half is Poland.7 -
@Teresa502 - That is crazy that a doctor would give your dad blood thinners so soon after surgery when bleeding can be such an issue anyways! I hope they can get it resolved. He is so lucky to have you right there to advocate for him.
@polskagirl01 - What a beautiful place! I would love going for a walk there and then sitting by a big fire with something warm to drink!
I will be back later to post mileage but wanted to share this Instagram post from the Six Minute Mile folks... I will just say I would kill my husband but amazing that she finished!
ETA - not sure why it is showing so big and truncating most of the video but if you have Instagram and click on their profile you can select it there....2 -
Wow, been away for the weekend and lost pages!
@Teresa502 glad your dad's home, bet that first night was scary.
@tarun_yadavA hope your legs aren't on strike! I think you'll find @martaindale managed to speed up because she followed a very long and thorough training plan and also nailed her race strategy including fuelling and managing paces.
@polskagirl01 made me laugh, 'do what I say, not what I do' was one of PV's favourite phrases :-)
So, running. I did January's HM distance on Friday to get it done. It was slow and felt hard, probably because I hadn't run more than 15k since Dec 19th. Also, it was challenging because 3 loose dogs came flying at me barking in the middle of nowhere and scared the *kitten* outta me. Luckily I stopped and made myself ignore them and they backed off, and they had gone by the time I was on my way back. I really must start taking my poles with me in case I need to try to defend myself.
The running club from the city nearby are doing a 'Golden Series' this year with monthly challenges... this month's is to gain as much elevation as possible in 2 hours, so I will probably try a couple of different routes and tactics for that over the next few days. Hence getting the half distance out of the way first in case my legs get angry.
Also excited that I've offered to volunteer at a skyrace that will happen a week after my marathon... it's part of the world cup series and will be run by some elites. Last year they also gave some nice kit out!
Oh, and this morning I finally worked out how to get a run in while away for the weekend AND keep the husband happy! We hiked to a lagoon around 4.5 miles from the campsite, then once I was sure he could find his way back I ran back ahead of him :-)
6 -
Glad you got in another run @Mari33a .
@spl8 Sorry your child has been sick. I hope it is all better now and you don't catch what they had.
@Teresa502 So sorry that your dad had to go back to the hospital. I hope the bleeding stops and they don't have to do another surgery. Glad you were able to get in a 10 mile run yesterday. Hugs and prayers. I'm not having any issues with my Garmin service.
@polskagirl01 Sounds like you had a great get away with your husband. Those pictures are amazingly beautiful!
@shanaber That is defiantly being accidently signing up for a race. She did great for the 10K to be a stretch.
@eleanorhawkins Great job on the HM distance and glad the dogs backed off. The running club Golden Series sounds interesting. You are great at elevation, so I'm sure you'll nail that challenge. Sounds like the hike and run back is a win win for everyone.
I decided to take a "rest" day since I've been doing more this month than I have in a long time and my legs were grumpy yesterday. So, between church and lunch I did a 2 mile treadmill walk at 3.6 mph.
4 -
@eleanorhawkins great HM and figuring out how to run while on vacation π
I did get my 3 miles today (on the treadmill)

1/19: 5.25 miles
11/22: 11.51 miles
94.67/100 miles completed for January
It was cold this morning when I got up this morning, so I waited a little while before I ran. It was 39Β°F feels like 34Β° when I headed out, but had warmed up to 46Β°F feels like 42Β° when I got home. I wore capri tights and sleeves and gloves. I was dressed pretty good. I was chilly starting out and running into the wind, but I was warm heading home except a little bit when I was running into the wind. I did stop by to give Sunny/Lilly the donkey some carrots. All in all it was a good run. I ended up with 11.5 miles. I usually take Monday as a rest day, but we are supposed to have rain overnight on Monday and Tuesday morning with it possibly turning into snow. So I am going to run tomorrow and take Tuesday as my rest day.
Sorry you had to take your dad to the ER @Teresa502 .
Looks like a great trip @polskagirl01 .

Great running @Scott6255 and @kgirlhart . Glad you stopped to give Sunny/Lily some carrots.0

tarun_yadavA wrote: Β»@martaindale did you say you ran your last couple of miles the fastest?? How??
I trained for it πππ
You are certainly doing this the hard way! We told you that you could do it if you had to. We didn't mean, "go out and run a marathon today". At least you fueled a little this time.
I hope your legs bounce back quickly. Seriously don't push the running for a bit. Your muscles took a beating and will need time to recover. I took a full week off after my marathon.
To @Scott6255's point about the 3 hour training runs, I did three 16 mile runs as my longest in training. That's a distance I can do at a long run pace and finish in 3 hours. On a good day I could squeak 17 miles in. I chose the plan I did partially because the longest runs fit my limits for a 3hr run.5 -
@teresa502 Sorry to hear that your dad is back at the hospital. I hope his Hb stabilizes and you can get him home soon.
@polskagirl01 Your pictures are beautiful! Cold but beautiful!2 -
@eleanorhawkins - you might consider getting a small airhorn for when you don't want to carry your poles. I have one I can clip on Hobbes' leash or on my waist pack. You could also use it if you ever got in trouble and needed help. I got mine at a marine supply store but you could probably find one online.
Love your fix to get a run in with your husband. Now if I could just get my husband to hike with me π
@Teresa502 - hope your dad is doing ok now!
No run for me today. Did strength training in between the football games. I have already hit my goal for the month but if I can maintain what I have been doing I may just make the 100 mile club! Tomorrow I have an eye appointment so no morning run and have our first agility class of the year. Hobbes will be out of his mind when we get there.
For @SummerSkier:I took these on my run on Saturday. Biggest issue was keeping Hobbes still so he wouldn't spook the egret I took the pictures.
7 -
WOW! @shanaber those are magnificent egret photos! I was very far away on mine yesterday. Love their eyes! thank you for posting these.1
