@martaindale - CONGRATULATIONS!!! ππππππ I love the photos and that you ran a half marathon SAVING some stuff for tomorrow. I bet there are not a lot of folks doing all of them? Or maybe there are but it's an amazing accomplishment.2

Thanks for all the support guys! I'm really enjoying the experience. I appreciate you waking up early to track me @quilteryoyo. I know you're not a morning person!4

@penguinmama87
Thank you so much for the comment and the advice - Iβm still trying to get up earlier to exercise, but you are exactly right the missing step for me is getting enough sleep - Iβm working out in the evening and at least I feel some sense of accomplishment !5 -

Welcome @ptabibian ! Is that 500 miles on your ticker your goal for the year? You may already know this, since I don't know how much you are currently running, but don't increase your mileage too fast or you'll risk injury. Are you using a training plan to get ready for your half? Will this be your first? @Alphahowls gets up at 4 am, I think. Me? Nope. I am not a morning person.
Thank you for the comment and yes the mileage was too much! I changed it to 250miles for the year , Iβm giving myself permission to slow down and build the habit. I was planning on running a 1/2 marathon (a second run but first was 10 yrs ago) in April but not sure if Iβm going to be readyβ¦Thanks for the community here.3 -
And off to a pretty good start for January.
2023 cum 2023

6.25 16.31 16.31
5.35 21.66 21.66

5.51 32.7 32.70

My Fitbit was nagging me for 2 days Thursday and Friday to take a rest day so I finally caved yesterday and did only WUNs and WOGs keeping my HR lower. I still got my miles in for RTY but only gave myself RUNNING cred for a mile. So week 1 total almost 40 miles... Won't repeat that soon but it's nice to get ahead of the game early.

Amazing job @martaindale on your half! You are doing so great! Great pictures. Good luck with the full tomorrow!
I hadn't done a double digit run since the marathon, so knocked out a half at a pretty easy pace. Felt (mostly) good.

@martaindale your pics look really cool, and you're doing great!2

We're visiting my mother, and I love to run in the woods up here. Although the plan was for a couple of hours on a flat trail down the valley beside the railway line, we then planned a daytrip to Gibraltar for today that meant I needed to be home by 10 at the latest. Sunrise is around 8.30 here atm. I had thought to bring my headlamp just in case, but there are houses and farms along that flat route and dogs come out of them... not something I wanted to have to cope with in the dark. So, I got up at 6.30, had a couple of coffees and a banana and left at 7.30 to head up the mountain behind the village. There were a couple of unsettling moments when my lamp picked out two glowing eyes and then a pair of horns, but it was just a cow standing in the middle of the trail. There was another further up lying down, another heartstopping moment but they just gave me confused looks π€£ I managed to time it so that I reached the top moments before the sun popped out from behind the hills on the other side of the valley. So beautiful. Few photos on Strava. I probably came back down too fast, then we walked quite a lot in Gib. Took the cablecar to the top of the Rock but walked back down. My quads are not happy. Better take it easy this week as race is on the 15th. Trouble is, my new running buddy wants to go up another mountain on Monday...
I wonder whether my physio can hear cash registers ringing in his ears yet

At the first sight of the eyes and horns, I would have been running the other way. Screaming.5 -

@emptydog umm yeah that was the most immediate urge but then I thought something with big yellow eyes and horns chasing me in the dark would probably be even more scary π3 -
Great job @martaindale
Cheering you on tomorrow!!!1 -

Great running @Mari33a !
I feel I must qualify my statement @martaindale . I didn't wake up and get up this morning "to track you." I did wake up because I had to go pee and thought of you running and was cheering you on. I hope that still counts. I will get to catch a glimpse of you in the morning though, as I will be getting up about 7 in order to get ready for church. I know you are going to do great! Can't wait to see your results and hear all about it.
You're doing great @emptydog !
@ptabibian I'm glad you rethought your plan. An injury would not be good when you are just getting started. Only you will be able to decide if you are ready for a HM. Maybe find a plan and see how it goes. Maybe instead of April you could do one in the fall.
Great start to the year @SummerSkier !
Glad your long run felt "mostly" good @Scott6255 .
@eleanorhawkins Sounds like you made a sound decision to change course for your run and the sunrise from the mountain top sounds awesome. I'm also glad that the glowing eyes and horns were from a curious cow and not something more sinister.
Great running @AlphaHowls !
I did a treadmill workout this afternoon, after some house cleaning and going to the store for mom. I felt a lot better today during the run than I have in a while. I did a run/walk for 4/1 min at 4.3-4.7/3.8 mph and finished with 5:27 min at 4.8 mph. Total was 2.25 miles in 30:27 min for an avg pace of 14:14 min/mile. Avg HR was 139, max was 160 bpm. I walked a total of 1.0 mile for warm up and cool down.

@emptydog - I agree on running the opposite direction of the eyes and horns!
@martaindale - you are amazing! Awesome HM run and I love the pictures and the medals (big Donald Duck fan here!). I am sure your Marathon run will be awesome too - you are so ready for this!
@Fit2btied2016 - glad you found shoes that fit well and feel great! That makes all the difference when you go out to run!
After my longish run yesterday I planned for a short, easy run today. It was beautiful out, partly cloudy and about 60F. Got to the trail and didn't feel too bad, breathing settled in and I thought it was going to be great. Stopped in at the bathroom and forgot to restart my watch until I got about 0.25mi out. I walked back and restarted my watch, happy I hadn't gotten even further out before I realized it. My legs decided they weren't happy and shortly after my back jumped on the bandwagon. I stopped a couple of times to stretch my back. I am not sure if the issue was running on the dirt/gravel road instead of the paved trail or if my back had just had enough. I went out on the dirt because there were just too many people/kids/dogs out on the trail and the thought of dodging around them just wasn't appealing.
Also a rant... what is it with kids (and some adults) riding essentially go-carts, small motorcycles and motorized scooters ok on bike/running/walking trails? I am assuming they were Christmas gifts and aren't legal on most streets but seriously they are not allowed but they do it anyway. And why do we need scooters and bikes with motors - doesn't that defeat the purpose?

Ok, so I wrote this and thought I had posted yesterday, but it was still sending in the comment box this morningβ¦
On the eating before morning running topic, I usually don't eat if it is a fairly short run, but for more than 5 miles or for a race, I will usually eat toast with peanut butter. I like to run in the morning, but I have been on the struggle bus lately and decided my body needed sleep more than anything.
Great job so far @martaindale! You will rock your marathon tomorrow.
I missed one of my training runs this week, but I have managed to walk or run almost every day. Today was a short 2 mile run with hill repeats, followed by a short walk with the dogs afterwards.
January running: 5.95 miles
Running + walking: 10.68 miles7 -
I am following Sarah along also... So pumped that she is rocking this entire challenge!!!!
Fit2betied sounds like you have a lot on your plate of must dos but you are coping well. Glad you found "the shoe" for you. I have had that happen to me just a few times over the years and it's an amazing feeling. Once with a pair of nikes which made me feel like I was floating (this was probably in the late 90's when I could wear a pair for years) and then last year with the pink New Balance shoes. Your feet are going to love you. Patience and don't try to do everything all the time.
Tarun hope you are feeling better today.
Scott I might try the "scratch ones" I have some bolts I am trying now. I don't run really super long a lot (10 is unusual) but between tennis and walking and running I sometimes feel like I need something.
Eleanor, Im sorry your easy run today sucked so much. I think that running on gravel (we have trails like that here) is really hard on your body because your feet are moving a little bit with each step. I avoid them but then those kids on motorized things sounds horrid too.
I tried an experiment on Friday with my caffeine intake and it was really interesting. A few weeks ago - not new years but sometme in Dec I decided to only have 1 kcup starbucks in the morning and for my other 2 coffees in the day to have the normal caffeine cups. I did not really notice a difference but thought overall less might help with sleep later on. Then last Fri out of the blue I just had 2 of the starbucks in the morning like I used to. I SWEAR I was BUZZING around work all morning. So I didn't notice when I decreased but WOW when I added it back for a day. Just goes to show how much effect coffee can have.
I also had a call from my dressage trainer yesterday and it turns out there is a horse at there barn who's owner went to join the air force and whose parents would like me to ride it for them (all free so what's the catch?). This is not a fancy upper level horse or anything. I haven't ridden since I lost Bandit a year ago Dec so not sure if I want to do this or not. But I really love the gal and she makes me laugh and they have a ton of barn kitties so I might go there next weekend just for a visit and to meet the horse anyway. Tennis as an alternate to riding is going fairly well and my group of people is slowly increasing to play with but I am not sure my back will ever allow me to really play as hard and long and frequently as my brain is telling me to?
Enough chatting. Need to get out and run soon and go see how Sarah is doing...6 -
Hello everyone!
I'm a newbee here as well... i've had for a long time as goal to walk everyday for 5k for a whole month. So far in January i've only did 3 times - hence decided to post in the group and commit to my January challenge! So, my goal until end of January is to cover 150k and walk/run at least 5k each day (few times a bit more).
So far i've done 3 walks, total 17.6k.

Great job @martaindale!!! Congratulations! What a big accomplishment it is that you have done all of Dopey.5
-
Fantastic marathon @martaindale ! I was following you during Sunday School and Church. I was so excited and wish I could have been at the finish line in person to cheer you on. Congratulations on completing the Dopey! You are awesome!!!!3
-
Congratulations @martaindale! WOW! What a fantastic accomplishment!3

@Fit2btied2016 I'm with you with having a "must do" list and doing it first. You have a lot on your plate right now. I hope your husband's surgery goes well. Glad you found shoes you love.
@shanaber I hope your legs and back are feeling better today. You did great on your run. I don't know why people think the rules are for other people, not them. And, you're right, having motorized scooters and bikes kinda defeats the purpose. Great mileage for the month so far.
You're doing great @marisap2010 !
@SummerSkier It can't hurt to go for a visit and see the horse...well, it can hurt your heart the first time, but that horse may need you and you may need him. Just see how it goes and if you decide not to, then that's okay too.
Welcome @hamogela !

I was slammed by a migraine over the last couple of days, and haven't run or logged on. Wow, this group is consistent. I had like 80 messages to scroll through. I will have to do some catch up over the next week.
@kgirlhart I can see reasons why someone might not like Yoga with Adriene. I find her classes to be at my current level. (I used to be an avid Ashtanga/Mysore yoga person years ago, but hadn't done much yoga in years.) I'm going to check out the instructors you like.

@martaindale Congratulations on an amazing accomplishment!2
