Allie - Wow, that is a pricey drinks package! Saga is very, very expensive, but every single thing is included once you are on board. Even gratuities. In the posh cabin we were having free Tattinger champagne etc. Free shuttle buses, excursions, WiFi, all drinks, transport to and from the port. Takes all the stress out. I love the fancy dining room (i adore good service) and we have booked our usual window table. Don't like sharing! The speciality restaurants are also included and you can have any food from any restaurant in your room. We often have breakfast in the room on a sea day as we have been to the gym early. And sometimes lunch if we have got back at an odd time. We have a dining table in the suite.
I really wish you a wonderful time on your cruise. Sounds as if you have got the system taped and won't be spending more than you need to. Enjoy your balcony cabin!
Karen - I only have around 8 Facebook friends and only one or two of them ever like my posts. I don't want more as I only use it to keep an eye on DH'S relatives! I do a lot more on Instagram these days. For contacting friends I use WhatsApp.
Haven't got on the bike yet! I'm intending to cycle to Dan Harris, 10% Happier. I'm halfway through ' How to cope with rejection. '

Question for you all ...
When you were young (under 20), what did you want to be when you grew up?
M in Oz
I was going to be a nurse at first, like my mother. But then I decided to be a teacher, like my father.
Although I do have a teaching degree (which I got in my early 40s), I work in data and enjoy that.

The rest probably don't see your posts. I know I don't see all the posts my FB friends make, it's just the way FB is set up now. Nor do I have the time to go looking.
Also, sometimes I like posts, sometimes I don't. Depends how I feel at the moment ... and depends how good my internet connection is. There's a black spot between home and work.
If this guy is running marathons, he's probably too busy training to spend a lot of time looking at FB.

Debbie bladder infections are quite common in cats. The main culprit is the kibble they are fed. I learned from my Pet Summit Group cats are strictly carnivores and when fed a steady diet of Kibble it can make them prone to bladder infections. I think that is what happened to my parents cats. It was awful for all concerned.
Dogs can handle some veggies. Ideally no starches. They too end up with problems from too much Kibble. Diabetes being one of the conditions too much Kibble can cause. What I mean by Kibble is the processed pet food that overcooked and has way too much starch (either with grain or potatoes) for the pet to digest. The overcooking of pet food creates problems for the fat that is in the food.
I do give DrewB a small amount of Freeze dried dog food because our winter has been so long and hard to get her out for walks because of snow and ice. She is not a winter loving dog. To give her enough exercise we play chase the treat around the house.
The argument for dog food is a balanced diet. How do we balance our diets. We eat a variety of foods everyday. This is what I have started to do for DrewB and her health has improved.4 -
Things are not too happy at Kim's caring for Mom home.... we had a tough discussion about finances last night and neither of us got much sleep. She said some hurtful things, nothing new there, and then gave me the once every year or two hug thinking it would make it all better. it did not. I am tired. I have not slept through the night in 11 days, I do not know how mom's of infants do it. - Of course new mom's are rarely 64 years old.

Rosemarie,
March 25th was the one year anniversary since Jack died. My days have gotten better as time goes on but there are times when a wave of grief hits me, not as often or as severe as early on. I am getting to know myself and what I can do and can't do. It's a whole learning experience because Jack was my best friend and the change from "we" to "me" was scary. After he died, I had trouble sleeping through the night and now most nights my Fitbit says I sleep between 6-7 hours. Your loss is still so new and I am so impressed with how you're coping. Sending you hugs,
Betsy in NW WA10 -
(((Kim))) — At sixty four, it seems like your mom is having a hard time accepting change. She is so lucky to have your support, but she doesn’t seem to realize how lucky she is. Is there a senior center where she could make a few friends during your workday?
Katla6 -
Welcome newbies and returnees! (((hugs))) to those who need them.
Thanks for starting us off again, Barbie! Can't believe it's APRIL! That means there's only two months left for school. Seriously, this year has flown. Wasn't it only yesterday that I was complaining that I didn't have a large enough monitor to do my job? Now it's one year closer to my retirement. Yes, I'm counting the years, months, days.
How wonderful, Rosemarie. Dogwoods are so pretty.
When I was younger, I wanted to and studied to be a family counselor, with a focus on adoptive counseling, Machka. Ended up getting married, having kids, getting a job, working in education and here's where I am.
As I've said before, I'm an open FACEbook. If any of you want to be friends, I'm Carla Letch Cooper. But please message me and let me know who you are. That being said, I still have to be careful. As a Marine Mom I want to know who's asking me to be friends.
Kim, I'm so sorry. Those discussions are really hard and remember, new moms don't usually have to have them with "babies" either. You're going to have to revisit that several times before it really sinks in and none of those conversations are going to be fun, but they'll probably get "easier". I mean, she's not "stupid". She's just fiesty. And you have to be sorta smart to be fiesty. Katla has a good point. Is there a senior center where you could take her for some "daycare"? Maybe not yet while she's still in "rehab". I don't know how that's going, but it was a really good idea. We have a lot of programs in our town.
Betsy, I was wondering when that angelversary was coming around. It thought it was sort of close to my MIL's passing. God Bless you, sweetie. Sending lots of love and (((hugs)))

Barbie ... thank you for starting us off on a new month!
Kim ... Praying for you ... Hang in there!
I did not accomplish my goals for March really. I had hoped to be lighter at the end of the month, but what I really wanted to do was lose the extra 7 pounds gained in February ... I only lost 1. April goals will to be lighter at the end of the month than I am today.

Machka - I'm sure both he and DH'S niece don't mean to be rude, they just have their own, busy lives, with hundreds of Facebook friends. He posts all the time about his marathons, his work, pictures of his wife and three kids etc etc. I 'like' all of them, and write cheery nessages. In the past he inadvertently hurt DH a few times IRL. Just not aware. Family is a weird thing. To them we are just old people and DH can feel very offended very easily. Misunderstandings abound. They take it in turn to feel 'slighted'.
They are not my family, so I try not to get involved with their and DH's nonsense, I'm definitely not involving myself tomorrow until I'm sure I'm wanted. I will go and cheer him on at the end of the road, and I've given him money. (No acknowledgement) They are also the most disorganised bunch I've ever met, which drives me insane. Best to keep out of it. I might hoover the front room rug, in case they come back here. DSIL, with niece, is parking in our drive early in the morning, but I haven't heard from her personally, so I don't know their plans. DH is hoping to meet up with his nephew after the race. There are 12,000 runners.

Sorry folks, Mom is not permanently living with me and is currently very limited wheelchair/walker due to breaking her hip. I am the care - no senior center/daycare- she can not be transported or care for herself in that setting. I was just venting, I am just hurting - this too will pass. sorry17

Before high school I wanted to be a teacher. Then in high school, I was introduced to the ‘new thing’ called a computer (early 1970’s). I went to the school counselor (a nun as I was in a Catholic High School) who told me that I didn’t ‘want’ to do that, it wasn’t a job for women and insisted I go for a secretary position. I asked her then why was I taking all college courses if I was going to be a secretary? Got depressed about not getting any help to go to college and just ended up in a factory, getting married, etc… I did get to teach in my life and taught myself computers then got degrees in it so with no help from parents or school got to do what I really wanted to do in life.

Lisa - my Mom suffered what you are going through, they never did investigate or test enough to know what the cause was or how to treat it.
Hugs to you. I know how she really enjoyed her good days.
Allie - I used to get so discouraged when I weighed weekly and it went up even the tiniest bit. I would then give up most of the next week. I finally started weighing daily and taking weekly and monthly averages. When I tracked that I realized I was losing about 1/2 a pound a week and 4-5lbs a month. It was so slow I didn’t notice until I looked back at it.
I need to start doing that again.
Barbie - Thank you for a new month. This month marks 5 years of catching up with you ladies, mostly daily.
Heather - I’m happy you have your cruise booked. Is the April one booked too?
I always assume when I invite one part of a couple that they know the invitation is for both unless it’s a girls day or something. I never thought of making a specific invite. Maybe my etiquette is off.
Machka - I always wanted to be a wife and mother first. I thought at one time I would be a daycare owner, another time an interior designer. I now think I should have been a therapist that helped teens. I really enjoyed the teen years with my girls. Some parents are really not prepared to deal with all of those emotions, feelings, angst, I still have a lot of my girls friends in my life.
Kim - I have no words I just want you to know you are doing a wonderful thing for your Mom. Many in your situation wouldn’t, it’s a shame she can’t appreciate it.
I think my eldest and her the grands are coming out to craft today. I have a couple of things I want to try and a couple things I need to finish.
We are dog sitting for a friend for two weeks. I don’t think I’ll agree to this length of time again. Jeb, the dog, is very sweet and wants a lot of pets and attention. He also, is stubborn like a two year old toddler. If he does not want to do something there is nothing making him do it.

Barbie thanks for taking such good care of us!
My goals for this month are:
1. Not to gain weight while on a three week vacation to Florida to stay at a timeshare with son and daughter-in-law, and visit friends there on our way home.
2. To continue to exercise. I will be bringing my kettle bell and electric bike.
3. Continue to drink bone broth and apple cider vinegar.

Heather,im sure the price of your cruise was astronomical, Royal Caribbean has alot of newer ships but im going on this one because my friends are and ive been on it before.
Carnival is less expensive and here is hoping when we go its when school starts up again so there won't be a boatload of kids
I love kids mind you.but I want to rest and relax
I haven't planned any excursions as of yet because I just don't know how my stamina will be,but they do give you indication when booking them what kind of health you need to be in..
I love the hot tubs but wont be able to use them much because of the heart surgeries..but it wont stop me from taking a dip or 2..4 -
Lisa - when you first retired you did some freelance work writing manuals. Did you do that through a company or advertise yourself?
Tracey.0 -
Tracey - As I've said before, you can still be a counsellor. My DSIL trained in her late 50s/early 60s while she was working full time as a senior nurse. She is still loving it at nearly 70 and doing new courses.
I think the problem is I am annoyed at DH. When the nephew texted him DH came upstairs crowing, "I've been invited to meet up with M after the marathon". As if he was talking about the king! I had made my own personal contribution to his charity online, DH hadn't.
There is a history behind this, of course. When M and the niece K were running the Brighton half-marathon, he did not tell me about it. Apparently DH had told his SIL he would be cheering them on. On the day, without even knowing they were running, I kept saying, 'let's go down and cheer the runners' - just to be public spirited. He responded as if I were nuts. So we didn't go. Later I got a text from K saying, 'Where were you? We looked for you all the way round. Did we miss you?' I have no idea why he decided not to go, or tell me about it, but it's one of those resentful family things, I bet. So, I was apologising and I hope they understood. My DSIL knows what he's like. She often falls out with him over family stuff. His being adopted has a lot to do with it.
So, I'm not happy. No one has contacted me about arrangements and DH has made none.
I have hoovered the rug and cleaned the downstairs toilet. K hasn't been to the house, so I will make sure it's reasonably tidy in case she wants to look around. As I say, I haven't been told of any plans. He hasn't thought about tidying, or anything.
Resentful? Moi?

Machka when I was young I was power hungry. I wanted to be CEO of AT&T, the telephone company, the most powerful position I could imagine. I am quite satisfied that I never made it in that direction.

Tracey.
I was working through a company called Verblio. Not just manuals, but everything under the sun. The pay's reasonable, and gets better as you go along and get access to longer pieces, and someone who's interested can make decent money. Before I quit, they'd turned to a lot of Hollywood-type stuff, like who's married to whom, who's having babies. Lots of car stuff, and lots of clickbait, like "10 easy ways to make hair gel at home!" type stuff. I ran out of ones that interested me, but am still on their writers list.5 -
It's Saturday!
What did I want to be when I was young:When I was under 20 I wanted to be a journalist, a vet, or a cop. I was lucky enough to be somewhat involved in all three fields, at least on the fringe. I used to write a monthly comedy/satire column for a regional sheep periodical and wrote obituaries for a daily newspaper in Arlington VA when DH was stationed out there in the mid-70's. Not exactly creative or news writing but I got to hang around the newsroom, a reminder of college days.
We had the farm, did a lot of vet stuff. Still have the surgical stapler and other sheep "equipment" we used to use. Cop? Managed a 911 Center so that came darn close.
Annie - I was going to mention some things I learned when doing Weight Watchers. A reminder that a cup of liquid weighs half a pound. I remember the line to the bathroom prior to weigh-ins at the WW meetings. And, there was something I learned along the way - the "Wendie" plan (not officially sanctioned by WW). A person was allotted so many WW points per week. Instead of averaging them out to, 12 per day or whatever it was, the idea was to do a couple days of low points then BAM a day of high points. For me, it seemed that I could reliably drop a pound or two a week by doing some alternating. Not sure the science behind it and not sure that it works for everyone, but interesting.
Rosemarie - after my DH passed, I was able to do early morning things without fear of waking him up or interrupting his TV watching. These days I'm generally up by 3. By 7 today, I'd made a bowl of Greek beans, egg salad, cleaned the chick pen, handled some banking stuff I'd been putting off. I can make all the "kitchen clatter" I want. He had super sensitive hearing.
Tracey - Jeb looks like a sweetie. I'm with you, a couple weeks might be a bit long to deal with this "kid". He doesn't look big enough to pick up, at least to me.
Heather the cruises sound great. I used to go through similar with my DH and some of his relatives, tho my main gripe was that he'd never pin them down for how long they were staying. His cousin and wife and his best HS friend and wife were the exceptions. We had such a good time with them, we really hated to see them leave. I can't say some of my relatives were much better, lol. I once hauled my bratty niece on break from college to the airport 8 hours prior to her plane departing. I figured they could deal with her. She gave me a migraine. (She's now in her 30's, a mom, a teacher and married to a great guy She's my favorite!)
Here's your weekly chick pic. They are starting to get feathers. 10 days old. Starting at the left then clockwise we have Thelma, Almy, yellow Gladys and Fairy by the waterer. One of these days when it's warm and sunny - maybe next weekend - afternoon temps in the 70's perhaps- I'll put them in an outside pen for a little bit. Don't want to rush it/chill them tho.
Make it a splendid weekend!

Lanette hmm interesting. I know I shouldn't be so focused on the exact number of pounds because it's likely plus or minus two pounds for me. Unfortunately all my measurements went up too, so that means bloating. But I lost five pounds in March, so that's a trend.
Barbie Karen and Beth thanks for the encouragement!
I think overall it's going well. I mostly stay out of my parents' food. Because of difficulty chewing, they eat things like sausage and hamburger, but also fried catfish and crabcakes. I'm amazed that if I eat the right macros at two in the afternoon, I'm fine watching them eat, and then I don't eat again until eight in the morning. Unless we have a challenging day and I get into extra chocolate.
Interesting that alternating is actually a plan. Kind of like fasting a few times a week. I think I would get irritable and faint if I went much below 1000 calories. No fasting for me.
I thought I had more replies to make but now I can't find them. I do read and consider them all, and I am grateful for the input.
About the roof, thanks to Tina, Mary, Kim, Tracey and Heather. You are all right to be wary, and kind to be concerned for us.
My dad was planning on replacing the roof this summer, and he has the money saved up. I was nervous that he didn't get more estimates and referrals but he was happy with this company. I looked a bit online and didn't see anything suspicious. They don't take deposits, so we don't pay anything until it's all done and cleaned to our satisfaction. And there is a fifty year warranty. So nothing illegal has happened, so there's nothing to report. Any expenditure this large would make me nervous, but it seems okay so far. It's going to be an expensive miserable loud banging day full of workers everywhere no matter which company does it.

Its one of there older ships but they refurbished some of it in 2018.
They rake you over the coals for everything extra..Im not a big drinker so I will bring my Yeti, and drink whatever is free. I might break down and get a fru fru drink or 2,but they are charging 102.00 a day for the deluxe drink package so alcoholic drinks, soda, specialty coffees and teas fall into that category. Really who wants to spend over 700.00 to drink
Sheesh
We can bring on a 12 pack of soda which we will do
And we don't do the fancy dining room,we just do the buffet
I did a Carnival cruise with my granddaughter. She was 18 at the time so no alcohol for her. I don't drink very much at all (maybe a glass of wine once in awhile) do didn't do the drink package. Just took my Yeti and kept it filled with non alcohol beverages. The cruise was very nice. Went at beginning of July and was a bit worried that it would be filled with kids/university students but that wasn't the case. Was a nice mix of younger and older people. Lots of entertainment on the ship itself. Never at a loss for things to do or nice to just sit back and people watch if I felt like it. Plenty of food options at any time of day or night. Did excursions at every port we stopped at and they were reasonably priced. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time.
Bit of stress that I have no control over. Just read that Westjet pilots are going to take a strike vote. Ireland trip is a code share (Aer Lingus with Westjet). Don't think it will affect my trip as they probably won't strike until later May. Some are guessing May long weekend....but it is on my mind.

Machka— When I set off to college I didn’t know what I wanted as a career. I graduated and went looking for work. I went to the unemployment office for advice & they hired me. I started as a claims taker & moved up. I eventually became an adjuster.
We moved to a new town near Portland, OR and I volunteered at the elementary school where my kids went, in Tualatin, OR. I took classes & became a licensed teacher. I retired after teaching 8th grade US history. I enjoyed the students and my fellow teachers.
