@SummerSkier mini-me loves horses and used to go for riding lessons, but part of her problem is that she is obsessed with perfection and what starts as something to enjoy ends up worsening the anxiety because she decides she isn't good enough. She's working on it with her therapist, but it's a long, slow, one step forward ten steps back process.
However, horses were my everything in my teens but I still struggled a bit at times. They certainly helped bear the bad times though.
@shanaber thanks. I'm sooooo excitified! I have most of my strategy figured out now, and am gradually working out ways to get round problems, mostly with how to carry everything. Being back of the back of the pack I don't trust aid stations to have much left by the time I get to them, so have had to figure out how to carry enough fuel and electrolytes for the 6 hours I may well take. Then I realised my wireless earphones only last 4 hours without charging, so just had to go buy some cheap wired ones. Now, I'm getting in a state because there's no info on the website about bathrooms and I can't go that long without stopping for a pee! Tapering sucks hahahaha
There were lots of poppies in the area I ran in the other day, if I go that way again tomorrow I'll try to remember to take a photo.5 -
I'm happily following my May 13th 5K training plan.
I got irrationally exuberant and signed up for a 10K on September 30, 2023. If all works out, I'll run the May 5K race, take a day off, then start a 10K plan.
Four years, one pandemic, and 80 pounds ago I ran this same 10k and broke an hour. It's super hilly. Breaking two hours will be a win this time (even just finishing it.)

@martaindale and @eleanorhawkins so sorry for you and your kids. That is probably the worst and most stressful feeling to see your kid struggling so much. Our daughter went through major anxiety about halfway through college. She came home and said she was dropping out and just cried constantly. But she got some therapist and got some meds that helped a lot. So there could be light at the end of the tunnel. Stay strong!
10 miles this morning, but it was a struggle. After running all week in the 50s, today's mid 80s may have well been 130 at 110% humidity 🥵 My legs felt ok, but I was just so hot, sweaty, and tired. Was hoping for a graduation acclimation to summer, but then again this IS Texas 😉

@martaindale and @eleanorhawkins I'm sorry to hear about the struggles with depression and anxiety. It's so hard these days for kids it seems but I'm glad that they have you as parents who help and support.
@quilteryoyo I think you asked a page or two back what kind of snakes I was seeing on my walk. Harmless little garter snakes. Not too scary but startling.
It was HOT again today. I think it got up to 86. I walked Stella mid-morning and it was already getting too warm. My boyfriend came along and we stopped at Dunkin Donuts for iced coffees and a (big) cup of water for Stella. He then carried the water and put it down for her to drink every few minutes. She is now probably going to expect a water boy to come along on walks from now on. We walked about 2.5 miles.

I don't mean this to be rude and I hope I don't offend you but I need to be really direct for a sec. Please don't act like my kid just needs an outlet. They are on a competitive rock climbing team. They did swim club before that. Mental illness is not cured by sports. This isn't a "kids these days" kind of situation and comments like yours really trivialize the seriousness of the problems we are dealing with.@martaindale and @eleanorhawkins so sorry for you and your kids. I'm glad to hear your daughter is well. Yes, I really hope we get there one day with ours too.5 -

Like several others here, it was a hot one this morning and sooo humid. But we have a little cold front blowing through following a storm so the next couple of mornings should be pretty nice.
My MIL and I went to an art festival after my run. Saw some really interesting styles and beautiful photography.3 -
@katharmonic - I am pretty sure Hobbes would love to have a water boy to come along on our walks and runs 😂4

I think we should all have a water boy!6 -
oh my @martaindale you are so right! If I could delete my comment I would. Apologies to you and @eleanorhawkins 😔 I in no way should have made that remark and it does sound like it is trivializing the struggles. Many hugs to both of you ladies.
Halfway thru the month!
It's really anoying but after Tennis on Friday my hip was really bugging me. I always take my cue from @AlphaHowls and decided to take half a strong naproxen on Friday night and just run yesterday. It's back to fine today even with a run and 2 nice walks yesterday so I guess it just wanted a little med attention
I hope to not see any "bears" on my route as loose dogs are enough. Usually it's when they are in a pack that scares me the most. I typically see skunks and armadillos and cats but thank goodness the dogs are rare but they do tend to get my hearrate jumping when they surprise me.

For the non-west coast people, we are moving into the coldest part of the year here.
"What?" you may say.
Yes, people from other states come to vacation in California in May and June, and only bring bathing suits, tee-shirts, etc. They shiver and suffer. Most Spring mornings near the coast stay in the 50s or low 60s until about noon, when the fog burns off.
Those hot summer nights? Not here, it drops when the sun goes down and the fog rolls in.
Coming to California for vacation in June? Bring some layers, and a hat or two.
May gray, and June gloom, has started. It was cold and foggy at the lake this morning.

@Scott6255 I hope the shoes work out for you. Half price is great. Shoe porn?
Beautiful flowers @martaindale ! No wonder you enjoy the hill country so much.
Those are some great walks @katharmonic . Thanks for the links. I'll check them out when I have a little more time. Just trying to catch up now. You are doing so good with your recovery. I would not like the snakes being everywhere. What kind are they? Tippy would bark, but as far as I know, she has never caught one. Yeah for getting out the other drain tubes! I know you must feel so much better. Also, yeah for the new bras, shirt, and car!
@Laurz9191 It's great that you get in running while your son is at soccer practice. Great use of your time.
@chris_in_cal Great running. I hope your sunburn isn't too bad!
I haven't posted in a couple of days due to internet issues, again, and just being busy. I have kept up the running and walking. I played league tennis on Tuesday night and my partner and I won! We were excited.
This morning, I got up and did a short treadmill run before heading out for my follow up cardiology appointment. I walked 1 mile total for warm up and cool down and ran 1.5 miles in 17:10 min for an average pace of 11:21 min/mile. I did a run walk at 5.5/3.8 mph for 7/1/4/1/4:01 min. My Avg HR was 133 with a max of 149.
The cardiologist said, "Everything looks great. Keep running. Come back next year."
Congratulations for the match! 👏1 -

I honestly don't think that it could have been any nicer this morning. It was 54°F with no wind. It was my perfect running weather and I ran 11 miles. I was a little annoyed because I stopped for a drink during mile 7 and I thought I paused my watch but I didn't. So when I started running again I paused it instead of starting it. Luckily I didn't run far before I glanced at my watch, but I was annoyed about how long I was stopped with my watch still running. Other than that it was a great run. I did see a loose dog so I detoured a little and noticed a small church that had a collection box for clothing and shoes. I wouldn't have run past that church if I hadn't seen the dog. I'm glad I did too. I really need to clean out my closet, but the nearest Goodwill is 60 miles away.

I know you all know that Boston is tomorrow but I didn't know that Eliud Kipchoge is running it for the first time! I am pretty excited to watch him and all the runners. This is a fun article from the NYT about Kipchoge
I have gifted it so you should be able to access without hitting a paywall.3 -
Beautiful pictures @shanaber. Love your running and improvement.
@chris_in_cal You are doing great with your running. Taking it nice and easy and not trying for too much too fast. You'll be ready for that 10K by Sept. I identify with your comment about your weather in California. I went to San Francisco in August, expecting it to be warm. We all froze and bought sweat shirts. I was really surprised.
I understand why your 10 miles was a struggle @Scott6255 . You did great to complete it.
Yes, it was me @katharmonic . Glad they were the harmless snakes, but, like you, they startle me. You did great on the walk and I laughed at Stella expecting a water boy from now on.
Great run @martaindale . Glad you enjoyed the art show.
Great running @SummerSkier .
You are doing great @mustb60 . And thanks for the congrats.
Great run @kgirlhart . Sounds like the loose dog was a blessing in disguise. I have done the same thing with my watch and it is REALLY annoying, so I feel your pain.

@shanaber That is a fun article. I can't imagine running that fast. Did I see that the tumbleater is going to be at the London Marathon this year? If so, maybe @tarun_yadavA could give it a go.
I didn't get a chance to post on here last night, as I got home late. Yesterday, I did a treadmill wun in the morning. I did a walk/run, alternating quarter miles at 3.8/4.2 mph. I walked 1.25 miles and ran 1.0 mile. I had intended to go further, but my knees were still stiff and I was struggling a bit. I didn't want to overdo it, since I had league tennis last night. My partner and I won our match 6-4 and 7-6 (tie break for the second set was 7-0). I was happy with how I played.
Today, I did my normal Sunday treadmill walk between church and lunch. After lunch, mom and I walked down to the creek to look at the wildflowers. We missed the peak of the bluebell blooms, but did see some and others as well. Pictures are under the spoiler, if you are interested.
Bluebells in the background with geraniums (?) in the foreground.
Close up of the geranium(?).

White violets
Close up of the white violet. I'm not used to the position of the camera on this phone, so that is my finger in the corner. LOL
