17. Be active outside. Dig up weeds or plant some seeds – wish I could’ve but way too rainy/blustery. Maybe Thursday :{
Welcome @forst98520! Would you let us know what you’d like to be called and your general locale?
Carol prayer said and your brother added to prayer list. ((hugs))
Machka what others have said about your dry stream. Very well done!
Annie Well done on the BMI!
Michele, I thought what Flea said about post-Covid unemployment benefits not being a living wage, especially not here where rentals are impossible to find at any price. Also what Machka said about work/life balance. It’s a different world than the one in which I grew up.
Heather hope you and Johnny are feeling better soon. Could it be a post-grandkids exhaustion bug?
Lisa thanks for checking in, you’ve been in my thoughts. When is the follow up to your most recent labs? Whooshing good thoughts for resolution.
Mary those pictures are reminiscent of Rebecca‘s food porn but some didn’t appeal, especially not the “garnish” on #1. Brava for walking it all off!
Tracey prayer said for your daughter and the process.
Heckuva thunder and lightning storm this afternoon. Dogs tried to bark the thunder away at first, but then settled down (thank goodness). My dry stream ... and part of our yard. 🙂
I've seen dry streams in pictures and wondered if I could create something like it. About halfway through, I wondered if I had taken on too much. But now that it's done (except for the spring planting), I love it!
I will have to get some photos when it has been raining ... the water really brings out the colour of the rocks.
Now I'm working on another long garden bed full of weeds ... with hydrangeas at one end and carnations at the other. Which reminds me, I need to look up carnations to see when the best time to plant some more is.
In the rest of the bed, I want to remove the weeds (not easy) and plant a couple more hydrangeas. Then the rest of the bed will be Australian natives.

Snowflake1968 wrote: »Machka - service and labour jobs are like that in Canada. Business reduced hours due to lack of staff. So they say, but I hear a lot of people looking for work. Personally, I am looking for administrative with a similar wage and those are not as available right now.
Your stream is beautiful.
Carol - prayers for your brother.
Annie - congratulations!
Michele - here in Canada unemployment benefits ended at the beginning of 2021. A lot of people in the lower paid industries went back to school during the shutdown. They had time to do it since they didn’t have to work 3 jobs to make ends meet. Those people are now filling jobs where several also retired early. I think I heard these numbers for both groups were in the millions.
Flea - I agree it angers me that people think that people sit on their butts and don’t want to work. In my opinion, people want to be paid a fair wage and have some flexibility with their schedules. They have learned that their life should be more than work. I wish our generation would have been taught that.
My daughter has been looking for a job since last July. She can only work weekends, Monday and every other Tuesday. No one will hire her. She still has children that need to be taken care of, if they had to pay daycare she might as well not work as it would be more than she makes.
I went to Calgary with our eldest today. We met at 715 and she dropped me at my car at 400. 6 hours and a bit of that we’re driving. She had 2 hours on top of that. She goes back next Tuesday for her next appointment. Her DH should be able to go with her for that one. If not, I have agreed to go again. It’s a long drive for someone with that much on their minds and being pumped full of hormones to boot.
We’re all praying that this is successful

Here, there are job ads that result in 0 applicants. I could have walked into 2 or 3 positions recently if I had applied because I would have been the only applicant. In one case, a friend of mine suggested several times that I should apply, and the deadline for applications was extended a couple times, but I just wasn't that interested in that particular area of work.
After COVID it became like a game of musical chairs here with lots of people reducing their hours, a few people increasing their hours, and quite a few shifting into a different area, doing secondments and all sorts. I reduced my hours and have been in 4 jobs in the past 16 months - term positions, secondments etc.
If I were actively looking I would throw my application into any job that interested me, even if I didn't feel fully qualified.
Also, set yourself up in LinkedIn. I've been "head-hunted" through that, for a real position (I checked) but I would have lost my long service leave so I didn't go for it.
Has your daughter tried Northern Reflections? Nice place to work and years ago they were happy with weekends and one other day of the week.

TV won't draw the lightning ... but lightning could destroy the TV.
If you have a TV antenna, it could be an attractive place for the lightning to strike because it's tall and metal.

ACTIVE APRIL1. Commit to being more active this month starting today. Yes!
2. Spend as much time as possible outdoors today. Yes!
3. Listen to your body and be grateful for what it can do. Yes! I can garden, which requires all sorts of body motion, and cycle.
4. Eat healthy and natural food today and drinks lots of water. Yes! Ate my usual food and drank lots of water up till about 8 pm. We won't talk about what happened after that.
5. Turn a regular activity into a playful game today. Hmmm ... Walking around the shops? Climbing stairs?
6. Do a body-scan meditation and really notice how your body feels. Achy.
7. Get natural light early in the day. Dim the lights in the evening.
There isn't much light early in the day here. Plus I was sleeping then. Plus it was cloudy, drizzly and rainy all day.
But I do dim the lights in the evening. It's one of many steps I take to wind down in the evenings to prepare myself for the night.
8. give your body a boost by laughing or making someone laugh
I rarely laugh. Most things don't strike me funny.
Lots of things amuse me, but not enough for laughter.
9. Turn your housework or chores into a fun form of exercise
I often do, but as today's work involved sitting at 2 computers, I walked on the treadmill during a break instead.
10. Have a day with less screen time and more movement
Unfortunately, today was another day sitting at 2 computers.
But I did go downstairs to row and lift weights.
Hoping the rain will let up soon!!! It's been 4 days already!
11. Set yourself an exercise goal or sign up to an activity challenge
One of my more favourite areas!!
We aim to cycle at least one 50 km ride each month and have been doing that for a while. At our AGM at the end of March, we got a bag full of these each.
We will have to see when we can fit our April ride in ... the 5 days off over Easter would have been good but it rained and rained and was cold and windy. Snow at higher elevations.
Maybe next weekend ... we'll see.
AND ... one of the bigger running events moved their event to September which is fantastic for me. Originally, it was this month, but I was nowhere near ready to even sign up for the 5K. Now I've got the winter to get in shape.
Also, now that I'm working back in the same building I was in about 16 months ago, with many of the same people, we've started our stair climbing challenge again. We are easing into it this month because of Easter and ANZAC Day but we'll be ready to be much more consistent in May.
The stair climbing challenge is exciting because when I'm busy climbing 20+ flights of 20 stairs each day I am at work, I lose weight.
12. Move as much as possible, even if you’re stuck inside
Absolutely! I climbed stairs.
13. Make sleep a priority and go to bed in good time
I do when I have to work the next day ... make sure I get at least 7 hours of sleep.
But I am not keen on that. I'm a night owl and like to get things done late at night. Having to be in bed by 11:45 pm is a bit uncomfortably early.
14. Relax your body & mind with yoga, tai chi or meditation.
Gardening ... will gardening do?
15. Get active by singing today (even if you think you can’t sing)
I sing every day. My husband is very polite about it.
16. Go exploring around your local area and notice new things
I've spent 5 years on our island.
I've done a lot of local exploring!
I think exploring locally is a great idea and some people don't do enough of it. However, I'm getting more and more restless to go somewhere else as the weeks go by.
17. Be active outside. Dig up weeds or plant some seeds
I usually do this on the weekend when there's daylight.
However, I occasionally do some weeding in the pitch dark when I walk Rhody right after work.
18. Try a new online exercise, activity or dance class.
Hmmmmmmm ... not that keen on online exercise, aside from Zwift.
However, I have started a stair climbing challenge at work, and we keep track of it on an Excel spreadsheet.19. Spend less time sitting today. Get up and move more often.
20. Focus on eating ‘a rainbow of multi-colored vegetables today.
21. Regularly pause to stretch and breathe during the day.
37. Enjoy moving to your favorite music. Really go for it.
38. Go out and do an errand for a loved one or neighbor.
39. Get active in nature. Feed the birds or go wild-life spotting.
40. Have a ‘no screens’ night and take time to recharge yourself.
41. Take an extra break in your day and walk outside for 15 minutes
42. Find a fun exercise to do while waiting for the kettle to boil (or pan of water.)
43. Meet a friend outside for a walk and a chat.
44. Become an activist for a cause you really believe in
45. Make time to run, swim, dance, cycle or stretch today

Machka-I love your dry stream. I wish I had the ambition to do something like that.
Tina in CA
Thank you, and thank you all.
It took me a long time because I hand dug it with a garden trowel - 10 metres (33 ft) long and about half a metre (1.6 ft) wide. I did that because I knew the ground was rocky and I wanted to use those rocks.
Also, I was working around what I had planted the year before - I didn't want to dig it all up, it was blooming so well.
And we had all sorts of rain through the late winter, spring, and early summer which really slowed me down.
But if I weren't concerned about "harvesting" the rocks and didn't care about the plants, I would have used a full-sized shovel and it would have taken me a lot less time.
After doing the digging, the rest of it came together quite quickly.
When I did a bit of research of how to do it, several sites suggested getting in a motorised digging machine of some sort, and they would have had the digging done in a couple hours!

We walked over 6 miles on our food tour, mostly to and from. We ended up having a private tour because the other people that were scheduled did not make it to town on time. So we had a very interesting talk with our tour guide!! I definitely would go on another food tour in the future!

Mary, that sounds like so much fun. That is something dh would actually enjoy doing. We have been to a few places Guy has been to.
He lives in the area here, his son goes to the high school my best friends daughters went to. He does a lot of charity work around here.
It was a lot of fun! I bet you and your husband would enjoy it! Guy does dictate where we eat once in a while as well! Whenever we go into a town, we do look up diners, drive-ins, and dives! Interesting about his son in your friends daughters school!

Annie and Tracey if I were a hiring committee I would want either one of you on my team. Tracey good luck in your job search.
Carol hugs and prayers for your brother and for you and all who love him.
Flea and Tina, love the information about your cars and I thought all electric cars including Hybrids were problematic to charge. It will be interesting to hear what vehicle Barbie and her husband decide on after their research.

Carol - Sending my very best wishes for your brother. So hard for all the family.
I am feeling so much better today! Felt 'off' since Friday, with awful stiffness, aches and pains, deafness, and slight dizziness. But today we both woke up feeling our old selves. I was beginning to think it was permanent!
Exercised, then wrote 500+ words and washed my hair. My old friend A phoned, so we had a good chat.
I'm currently writing about a personal development course that I attended and worked for over four years, 1990 - 94. In my mind I'd kind of dismissed it as not so important in my recovery from childhood trauma, but now I am thinking about it, I'm realising how much I did learn and how much it did for me. It helped me to be so much more courageous in going for what I want, and stepping out of my comfort zone. I saw how the limitations we put on ourselves are just that - self-imposed. We are capable of so much more than we think.
Off to pick up Bea from school this afternoon.

I don't recall having much of an issue with stepping out of my comfort zone ... so much so that I can't think what a "comfort zone" would look like for me.
I'm almost always somewhat uncomfortable ... and dealing with new challenges and problems, gaining new skills and experience, and learning (see the image I posted a couple days ago).
I've been a perpetual student. I've had all sorts of different jobs. I've lived in many different places ... some quite "interesting" places. I've travelled, including 2 long trips mainly by bicycle (3 months & 8 months). More recently, I've been dealing with new challenges and problems in the world of brain injury.
I have moments where I feel comfortable, but there's always something lurking ... a challenge, a problem, a new experience ...
Having said that, one of the things that really made me realise that any limitations are self-imposed and we are capable of so much more than we think when I started randonneuring ... audax ... ultra-distance cycling.
In 2001, I was looking for a new challenge. I had been doing the recreational cycling thing and had increased my distances quite a bit. I was commuting to work by bicycle. I had joined a racing team and raced with that team for a couple years, then raced independently the third year. But I wanted something else.
Years earlier I had cut out an article about randonneuring, so during the early spring of 2001, I went to my filing system, located that article, and called the number. Amazingly, it was still the correct number and that April, I cycled my first 200 km randonneuring event. I had cycled 200 km in one go before, but this was a timed event - I had 13.5 hours to complete the distance, including all breaks. I figured if it went well, I would try the 300 km with a time limit of 20 hours, including all breaks. 2 weeks later, I rode that 300 km event. I figured if it went well, I would ride the next one in the list, a 400 km with a 27 hour time limit. I did. And I figure if the 400 went well, I would ride the 600 km with a 40 hour time limit. And I did.
That winter, I burned my left foot to the bone which stopped me in my tracks for a couple months. But the first shoe I tried to wear was my cycling shoe! By spring, I was ready and did the 200 km, 300 km, 400 km and 600 km set again ... then in July, I cycled my first 1200 km, with a 90 hour time limit, including all breaks.
I completed four 1200 km events and one 1000 km event (plus a whole bunch of 200 km, 300 km, 400 km and 600 km events) over the next few years, and met my husband on one of the 1200 km events - in France.
But in doing that, I realised that limitations are self-imposed and we are capable of so much more than we think. I'm not overly athletic ... I'm just stubborn and persistent, and I like a challenge.
These days, my challenges are a bit different ... but I'm still stubborn and persistent.
If you really want to do something, jump in and give it a go. You may discover it's not for you, which is completely all right, or you may discover you are more capable than you thought. 😀
Machka in Oz
PS. One day, I should write a book called "Out of My Comfort Zone" 😀
Or maybe "Seeking My Comfort Zone" 😀

Thanks everyone for your welcomes! I'm Janice. My tag name comes from leaving WA state almost 30 years ago and moving to northern Minnesota. I just started hanging out in yahoo games and needed a nickname. I really missed the PNW trees so I chose forest98520. The numbers are my hometown zip code
I'm currently in upstate NY near Saratoga Springs. Been here about 12 years. Have lived all over the country due to husband's job.
We have 5 grown children and 4 grandsons
I really love to walk and hike although my hiking is very very slow. I don't hike as often as I would like. I need a dog to take with me as I'm a chicken to wander in the woods by myself.
That's about it. I'm really focusing on protein and calories. I would love to spend the later years more fit. My first 30 years of life I was very fit. My last 26 years I've been extremely overweight. I don't need to be 130 pds again but I would love to see 199

Heather - I must have posted at exactly the same time you did, thank you for the positive thoughts for me. Glad you're both feeling better! And Barbara AHMOD, thank you for your good thoughts too, dear heart. There's an awareness that stays with me, the feeling that the group's regard remains wrapped around me like a warm blanket on a cool winter's night. Thoughts of love and support and hope that literally encircle the world. That group experience is unique in my life. I hope I return even one-tenth of the support and love I gain from y'all, but I'm not sure that's possible. I am ever grateful.
To answer your question, Barbara - I'll have access to most of the results late today or early tomorrow, except of course for the urine test. Some of the more complex ones have to be sent to a specialty lab, as well. Hopefully I'll be able to get that urine test sorted tomorrow or the next day. I have a phone appointment next week with my current primary care VA doc.
Kim - Just reaching out to say I think of you often. I hope you get that same feeling from the group. We know you are walking through the valley of the shadow, and we're here, holding you up.
Carol - Thinking of you, too, and your brother.
Tracey - Many good thoughts for your daughter and you, as well.
Barbara AHMOD - Regarding lightning: We lost a TV about a year after we got here due to lightning. We had a small antenna set up in the back yard to be able to get local news, and during a storm, the antenna caught a trickle of lightning. Killed the TV because I did not put a surge protector on that antenna cable. You can buy them now that will let you run a co-ax through them to protect electronics. I highly recommend them, and they're a whole lot less expensive than buying a new TV!
Machka - Like you, I'm not sure I have a comfort zone. This does not mean, however, that I would consider the prospect of doing that kind of bicycle event! Where it expresses itself for me is that I tend to take my fears and run straight at them. For instance, I was getting more and more afraid of flying, so at 47 years old, I went through the school and the federal background checks to become a flight attendant. I was scared of jumping off a high dive, so I ran right off the end of one a half dozen times in order to get over it. I was scared to be thin, for so many reasons, but I had the gastric bypass at 45 years old and gained the life that I was meant to have all along. It's been a constant in my life since I left home at the business end of a shotgun. It's not that I'm not afraid, it's that I feel the fear and do it anyway.
Janice in NY - Welcome! It's a good place to get that support you're looking for--don't feel you have to respond to everyone, just step into a conversation that interests you whenever you are ready.
Off to find some breakfast, I'm starving!
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR

Good morning ladies!
We had a long power outage last night. I got irritated, which is not like me, because it interfered with my workouts. And because my dad kept jumping up every time a car went by, and holding the front door open. So then I had to make sure Teddy didn't get out in the dark. Such a nuisance. Anyway, it's over. No harm done, but we are all a little sleepy.
Thanks for all the encouragement! I couldn't do it without you all.
Heather so glad you are feeling better!

Kim ... Good question. I suspect we are then pushed into the other levels whether we like it or not ... and then have to decide if we want to sink or swim.
Kylia ... I am so sorry you deal with migraines! I would discontinue the heart medication too regardless of whether it was beneficial. You can't function with migraines so what would the point be??
Debbie ... I'm praying for a different outcome for the young man too ...
Rebecca ... is there a way to find a serviceman's current address? Would the Navy give that to you or is this another privacy issue like HIPPA?
Karen in VA ... Glad to hear that some of your wife's symptoms are lessening! It would be nice if they ALL subsided, but something is better than nothing!
It has been an unseasonably warm few days. My husband and I continue to work at yard clean up and, of course, the more we're outside the more that we see needs done. I was hoping we could get the house resided this year, but the one quote from a friend (very reasonable) was higher than we can swing right now. I even did some mowing this afternoon over a spot that is very high due to persistent watering (the dog). The temperatures are supposed to drop fast this evening and there's even a chance of mixed precipitation. Arghh.

No not really. They keep all that pretty secure.

Hi Gals,
Well, as Lisa and Heather predicted, God is off the table as the entity in charge of safety. With the reaction from me and PT being anything but “ok that will work” she is finally doubling down on doing her PT exercises between PT visits, and being willing to try harder – I am now needing to remind her that falling again will just slow going home down. But this is easier to deal with. Still no willingness to get railings or grab bars installed to make her home safer, but that will be this weeks job to convince her this is important.
One big win for me was a friend sent us money to get dinner to go, and my mother refused to agree to use it – I should cook, and not take charity…. Other local friends have dropped off soup or other things and that was ok, but this friend lives a 6 hour drive away. I told her how hurtful it was that I had to make all the meals and could not even take a break one night when we had the money to do it. Then she wrote a thank you note to this friend, and I was totally appalled and told her in no uncertain terms that you can’t tell me it is charity and send a nice thank you note! (I actually held the thank you note hostage! LOL) Last night we ordered Chinese and have enough for 2-3 nights! And I put the thank you note out for the mail person.
I am finding myself in a place of grief, understanding that grief is something that happens with any loss, not just at the time of a death, I had hoped (unreasonably) that if somehow my Mother and Brother were separated I would be able to have some time before mom died with the mom I remember from childhood (I know there is not universal belief that she was a good mom, but certainly before my dad died she was a much nicer person). The separation has happened and the bit of hope I had for some time, some memories being built is gone. Having my sister reconnect and realizing that there is no hope for a relationship there. Means that hope is gone.
One of the things I have always wanted was family. I now have to accept I will never have that. I have my nephew and god kids, but they all have others that are their family also and none of their other family will acknowledge that I am part of the kids family. So I am trying to do what I need to, grieve what I hoped for, and look for something to hope for because without hope what is the point.
A while back the question was asked what did you want to be when you were a kid? And my answer is what I wanted was to be a member of a big family, and a host of different careers from Lawyer, detective (I was a huge Nancy Drew fan), to farmer, to pilot and architect.

Oh, big, huge acknowledgement, Kim. Yes, grief can happen at any time and for all reasons. But I do believe it can be the beginning of something new. You are coming home to yourself. The best home of all.
We love you. You are so brave and honest.
Can't write more because Bea is bugging me!

Still no news about Nick- Just praying for a true miracle.
A bit stiff this morning. Walked the wetlands before getting Ezie from school then walked with my friend at the park last night- first time her and I have been walking in months. Great to catch up. I could have walked longer but she was ready to quit. Thankful for the time we did have. It was getting cold and the dark clouds were blowing in. It rained after I got home.
Ended the night with my fitbit telling me I was just over 20,000 steps/9 miles.
Heading to Smart and Final for a few things-last day of the sale- hopefully they still have what is on my list. Tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and grapes- all 99cents a pound and Ragu white sauce for $1.49(son loves that but adds seasoning and parm to it when he makes pasta)
Pick up Ezie at 1:10 so will head over there about noon and go walk before getting her.
No class or walk tonight so will make a nice dinner for all of us- chicken tacos/tostada's
As far as the unemployment- in this area, because there were so few people that wanted to work(many were getting a lot more doing nothing than they would have working- including our friends daughter-she hasn't worked for three years. She is very capable and there are tons of jobs all over ). That is why dh was working so many hours and they lifted the restriction on retirees until just this last month. He could have worked more than 40hrs a week during that time if he wanted. He is now back on restriction for 63hrs a month.
The extra unemployment benifits have ended and they are cutting back on other benifits- Hopefully this will push Ali to get a job instead of just sitting at home. She could go back to her old job, no problem but she didn't like having to work weekends because she wanted to spend time with her boyfriend. Another job she could have taken, she didn't want because it was entry level and she has a college degree and felt it was beneath her to take it so she does nothing and her dad and boyfriend continue to support her.6 -

the grass Debbie is referring to is Cynodon dactylon and in our area it is a very invasive weed!

Oouuff!!
Bea was picked up by my son. She is a true force of nature! Wonderful!
We do wonder what she will do as an adult. I'm sure she will make her mark on the world.
Still, thinking about Kim, and sending her my very best wishes. These kind of 'story-changing' revelations take a while to absorb.
I was listening to a podcast this morning that brought tears to my eyes. Who are we really without our illusions? And what does it mean to face the infinity of who we are? Spoke to me. Anyone interested can find it on We Can Do Hard Things. Latest episode.
I love people who able to face the truth. In the raw.
We have Max tomorrow, followed by painting our pots. DH said he would like to go out for an artisan beer and a Persian meal afterwards. Who am I to say no?

Kylia--HUGS!!!
Karen--What a fun day. I remember growing dad would have different people over and they would start playing guitars and I so enjoyed listening.
Carol--Prayers.
Mary--Interesting about the food tour. Thanks for sharing and the pictures.
Kim--I understand how hard it is to go from what we dreamed of and what is. I always wanted a big family and to be the hostess that would make the big meals and have everyone at my house. Kids do not get along, (blended family worked until they left home) so I have learned to take it as it is. You are part of my famiy and always welcome. Sorry about the let down with your mom.
Been a long week and it is only Tuesday. One of my staff had her mom fall and break her hip yesterday and when they did the xray found she has advanced cancer. So she is gone for who knows how long. So I am work 6a-6p Monday-Friday until further notice. And they have put a freeze on hiring until at least July. One day at a time.
