About exercise ...
10 Things to Stop Doing If You Want to Exercise
https://www.verywellfit.com/things-to-stop-if-you-want-to-exercise-1231403
A few quotes from that article ...
"Too often, we wait for the motivation to exercise, but waiting for that is like waiting for the motivation to scrub the toilet. Do you really want to clean the toilet? No. It's just something you have to do, but when you do it, you're really glad you did."
"Look for opportunities to exercise, rather than reasons not to - If you don't have much time, try lunchtime workouts, shorter, more intense workouts or split your routine."
"Work with your life the way it is now - We're always waiting for things to calm down but when does that actually happen? If we're lucky, we may get a week or two now and then when life isn't utter chaos. Don't try changing your schedule to fit a workout. Instead, try fitting a workout into your schedule, even if it's just 10 minutes at a time."

Tips that have worked for me
Put your current numbers into MFP
Select sedentary as your activity level
Choose how much you'd like to lose (i.e. 1 lb/week)
MFP will give you the number of calories to eat
Eat those calories ... weigh the food (with food scale) and log every bite.
A few extra things have helped me along the way:
1) Exploring my grocery stores and markets to find delicious, filling low calorie foods. It's amazing what's out there.
2) Exercising as much as possible. Exercise gives me extra calories to work with so that I can have things like pizza now and then ... but to keep my sanity and not wear myself out, my exercise quantity varies as does what I do for exercise.
Also, I tend not to eat all my exercise calories back.
If I've just done a little bit of exercise like a 3 km walk or something, I'll eat about 50% of my calories back.
If I've done a moderate amount of exercise like a 5 km run or 50 km bicycle ride, I'll eat about 75% of my calories back.
If I've done a lot of exercise, like a half marathon or a 100 km bicycle ride, I might eat about 90% of my calories back.
3) Eating how I want to eat. This is where everyone is different ... some people prefer to employ fasting, others like high protein diets, some like vegetarian diets, some like to eat 2 or 3 meals a day, others like to graze. Go with what works for you.
Personally, if I had to define what I do, my diet is probably most similar to a Mediterranean diet with a vegetarian lean ... and I'm a grazer. I also have to adjust what I do depending on my cycling events ... they're tricky because I need the fuel without going overboard.
Stick to it for 5 weeks, then reassess how things are going.
Regarding Cheat Meals
When I was on a mission to lose weight in 2015, I never went over my calorie limit. I stuck to the plan like glue. And I lost the weight.
But I broke it up into weeks. When I started I had 15 weeks until we were going to Canada so my plan was to stick to the calorie limit for 15 weeks and then take a 1-month break while we were in Canada. I did that and lost 15 kg in that time. After the 1-month break, I eased back into it for a couple weeks, upped my calorie limit slightly, and then stuck to it like glue for the next 20 weeks in which I lost 11 kg and took me close to Christmas when I took another break for about a month.
I find that kind of set up works for me.

Fitbee-when I was out getting walk in this am I walked past a man walking his little dog who commented "Getting it in early before the storms". We are having rain and it is muggy!
Machka-sorry to hear about knee. I know it takes a lot to keep you down. Hope rest and maybe therapy will take care of problem.
Dr. Katiebug-I like the chicken/apple sausage also. However, I currently stuck on Johnsonville turkey links. 80 calories for two of them. I've been know to use them for a random protein snack during the day also.
Rebecca-your pen pal experience is very interesting to me-I have never really seen it in action.
Yesterday was a restful day. Got in walk, shopping, laundry. Also took a nap (which is unusual for me). Stopping by church this am to talk about needs in the community. Will do my walk after that I think instead of fitting in before. Speaking at 8:30 service and 10:30 so there goes my morning. But I will survive!
Want to get a good stretch session in so off to start the day with my meditation first.
Take care all,

I'm a little frustrated with not being able to exercise right now.
When I can exercise regularly, I keep control of my weight and even lose weight.
Exercise is also great stress relief.
On the topic of retirement ... I'm years away, but one of my hopes is that I'll be able to exercise more whenever I can retire!!
I was hoping to get into the garden today, but I would have needed to kneel and that's not an option right now.
So instead, I ...
... washed my sheets and hung them out to dry (with a little help from my husband).
... gave the bathroom a quick clean.
... tidied the dressing room.
... and waded through some of my emails from the past couple weeks, dealing with them. I had missed a payment in there because last week's chaos just put it right out of my mind. Oops.

Barbie: 🥰 the red Tesla. Have fun figuring out all the features.
Machka: That’s rotten luck about your knee. Hope I doesn’t take too long to mend.

Quiet day. Catching up with The Archers-a very long running radio serial. It's dealing with the subject of brain tumour at the moment
I knew there was a cauliflower in the fridge, but couldn't face the faff of making cauliflower cheese, so I asked DH to make it 😅. I did go out and buy some bacon to put on the top. Also tomato juice for me. I'm trying to cut down on alcohol and I really like a very spicy tomato juice.
I'm still on low simple carbs and getting along OK. Had beetroot in my lunch salad.
Painting session today ✨️

Normally, the photo of the painting is better than the painting, but I think it's the other way round with this one! I'm quite pleased with it as it's a difficult subject. A beach in the Lofoten Islands. It's A4 size.

Morning, afternoon and evening, my chickens,
Machka - Glad to see you, dear heart, I knew you were having a busy week, but do miss your calming posts when you're busy. Sorry the knee is being such a bother, and hope tests show it's not too badly injured. If it helps any, I haven't done anything where I have to kneel in probably 20 years because both knees were wrecked when I was super heavy. There are always work-arounds.
Annie - Well done on the NSV, dear heart!
Heather - Love that watercolor... the movement of the clouds, in particular.
On the subject of cheat meals and the personal psychology they entail - might be a trigger for those with past abuse:One of the things we hear most in this group, and that has been most helpful for me, I think, is that you should do something that works for YOU, and something you can and will keep doing, whether it's exercise or food regimens, fasting or keto, WW or something else. Anything that you will do only temporarily just isn't terribly useful.
Cheat meals or days built into a regimen don't make sense to me now, because the only person I was cheating was me. But that's my mindset... if it works for you, and keeps you headed where you're trying to go, then you should use them.
All that said, my aversion to them is deep-rooted. I realized the other day that I was covering over a snack wrapper that I put in the garbage can so Corey wouldn't see it. Believe me when I say that Corey does not in any way supervise my calorie intake.
It was old, old habit from years and years of hiding what I ate. I hid what I could from my ex-husband by eating in the car or hiding candy wrappers and such things. He didn't care what I ate either! I was just trying to hide from myself that I was morbidly obese and stayed that way because I ate the calories that kept me that way. And by hiding things that way, I could say that I ate the same things my husband did and gained weight while he lost. I was deluding myself, and honestly, really good at it doing so.
Most of those who've been here for a while know I had a gastric bypass in 2005, lost from 303 pounds down to 137. While it restricted the amounts I could eat, it didn't fix what I could eat, or my mental gyrations that kept me so heavy. Until I owned my own intake and exercise, I couldn't let that scared fat girl go.
She thought that if she didn't admit she was eating too much, she wouldn't have to admit that she stayed heavy because it made her feel safe from her abuser's attention. My abuser died in 2004, and I finally felt safe in the world... so I could be thin without being in danger. Please note, this wasn't an immediate recognition - it took years of poking around in my twisty little mind to figure out why being fat worked for me.
I also gained back up to 219 pounds three separate times in these last 18 years, and lost 40 to 50 pounds each time before I started slowly going back up. Only the illness that's plagued me for the last three years has gotten me down to 146 pounds today. Her ghost remains, and she really, really still wants to be safe, but she rests easy most of the time right now, as I concentrate on getting well. Those old habits still rise up occasionally... but once I see them for what they are, they subside again.
That went a lot deeper than I meant it to, but then again, the reasons why we struggle with these lifestyle changes are never shallow. It's an ongoing work, and it's worth the effort, because we're worth the work to get there.
OK, I've jumped down off my soapbox, back to the daily world, which isn't nearly as serious as all that most of the time. If I'm this verbal while I begin my two-day fast, just think how much I'll have to say by Tuesday morning!
Bear with me, my chickens, this too shall pass...
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR10 -
Good morning, ladies. Haven't posted for a bit but read through every morning with my coffee.
Lisa, read your spoiler and I can relate to a lot that you said. Thank you for your post.
Machka, hope your knee heals quickly and well. I know it is difficult to deal with injuries.
Heather, love your painting and enjoyed reading about your cruise.
Another very smokey day again. Trying not to be outside too much because of the air quality so finding it more difficult to keep up with my garden this year. Have to go out and do just a bit more weeding this morning as I like it to be as clean as possible. Eating potatoes, carrots, green onions and lettuce so far. Plants are huge this year which is surprising. I don't water my garden and depend on rain. We were very dry earlier in the spring but have had some nice timely rains since. Very big pea pods on the vines so waiting for those to fill out. Our barley field is just starting to head out. Will be interesting to see what size the heads are.
Enjoy your day, ladies.

Hello all, I just recently came back to this app after 9 months of neglect and reversed my prior success with 27lb weight gain again 😫 . Unfortunately i sway toward food when my emotions flair. I lost my Dad in October and spiralled backwards due to grief and depression.
I’m managing my feelings again and want to get back to my goal. which is achievable I hope. (70lbs). Being 58 and battling metabolic slow down it’s very hard to see loss… and keep it off
Any advice is welcome… even just a supporting reminder to stay the course. Have a beautiful day❤️💕🌸💕

Great Post, Lisa. I feel so much better when I'm thinner, that I'm a danger to myself! It's only now in later life that thin doesn't equal hyperactive sex mad temptress. Again because of my abused childhood. At the moment I am looking 'comfortable ', or 'motherly', so no danger of me going off the rails. I am working on the return of the sex goddess, though I am thinking more 'raddled old hag'.
So true that our bodily 'covering' is a deep matter.

Welcome Jenny!
I think most of us eat when our emotions run high. I'm slowly learning to grab an extra yogurt instead of a sugary treat, to quit after one, and to go exercise the calories away. Counting calories has really taught me the difference between a 100 calorie snack vs ice cream, etc. I can recover from 100 calories over, but the bigger treats I regret for hours. They say the pleasure from eating a treat lasts less than fifteen minutes.
I also have the impulse to hide my treats. Logging everything really helps me to be more logical about eating. Getting invested in meeting my calorie goals gives me the temptation to just not log. But now I know better. My program is working so I'm not going to change it now.
Good luck to you on your journey! Remember to allow yourself time for trial and error, and learn from your mistakes.

Barbie ~ What a snazzy looking car and so happy you got your favorite red.
Debbie ~ I don't blame you for not wanting Ezzie just one day a week.
Heather ~ Your trip to London sounded like a great day but I bet you were very tired when you got home. I would never have that much energy.
OK...I wrote those comments yesterday and now have had 4 more pages to cover!
Lisa & Heather ~ You are both very insightful about your old/new eating habits. My wine habit in the evening is my menace.
Rebecca ~ Your pen pal gift is a beautiful thing to do for a young person. Love your flowers from your husband.
Allie ~ Sorry that you are feeling hurt because you weren't invited to the family gathering. I have had occasions like that.
KJ ~ Hope you recover quickly. One year strep was going like wild fire through my classroom and it took me two dr. visits to bet over it.
Karen in VA ~ Where are you?

Did Denise Austin Quick Burn Cardio DVD then went for my walk then to WalMart. I went slower today because I have these cramps in my stomach. I know it’ll go away (like right now they’re not as severe as they were this morning). I’m not going to track because I know that I’ll be trying to eat things that will hopefully settle my stomach, like yogurt.
Speaking of yogurt, I tried this Chobani low sugar. It says it has stevia and monk fruit extract in it. I reminded myself that I really don’t like the taste of the stevia. So the second container I added honey just to mask the taste of the stevia.
We’re supposed to go to a baseball game today. Guess I’ll take my own food so I can have something lighter.
Pool party went, I thought, well yesterday. I have these grass skirts that I put around the garbage cans and this year the skirts fell down. We wonder if it’s because this year is the warmest it’s ever been. Fortunately, the rain held off until most everyone was gone. Vince guess we had about 40 people here. I do wish people would stay longer, but I also understand that some people don’t like to drive at night. I know that I’d prefer not to
I got the cake for Newcomers ($20) and a box of cookies for Vince. Normally, I don’t buy cookies but because we bought them, I could use my $5 coupon which made the cookies 49 cents plus I’ll get $2 or $3 off my next purchase at that store. So I think it was worth buying the cookies.
Rebecca – how sweet of your husband to bring you flowers . How sweet you are to get all those things for your pen pal!
For some reason I couldn’t sleep last night so I got up. Now I’m so tired!
Ginny – it’s been muggy here, too. When I go for my walk, lately I’ve been taking my water bottle with me. I’m thinking that I need to take some sort of bandana for my sweating.

Well, off to the baseball game

1. Take a small step to help overcome a problem or worry. I am working on helping my son through this tough time by being in contact with his case worker and tracking his location.
2. Adopt a growth mindset. Change “I can’t” into “I can’t…yet”. I try to never use those words. I follow Yoda’s ‘Do or not, there is no try”
3. Be willing to ask for help when you need it. I will. My back hurts today so will easily ask for help when I need it.
4. Find something to look forward to today. Missed posting this yesterday. So today I am looking forward to my therapy session.
5. Get the basics right: eat well, exercise and go to bed on time. Will do!
6. Pause, breathe, and feel your feet firmly on the ground. Will meditate today to help me do this.
7. Shift your mood by doing something you really enjoy. I really need to do this today. Did not do this. Had a bad day all around yesterday.
8. Avoid saying “must” or “should” to yourself today. I will try.
9. Put a problem in perspective by seeing the bigger picture. Trying to see my son’s decisions through his eyes.
10. Reach out to someone you trust and share your feelings with them. I did not do this.
11. Look for something positive in a difficult situation. My son is bonding with his uncle and grandmother.
13. Challenge negative thoughts. Find an alternative interpretation. I worked on this. I also learned a breathing technique to help.
14. Get outside and move to help clear your head. I do this every day, but the triple digit heat is preventing it.
15. Set yourself an achievable goal and take the first step. I have to think about this.
16. Find fun ways to distract yourself from unhelpful thoughts.17. Use one of your strengths to overcome a challenge today.RVRita in NM
18. Let go of the small stuff and focus on the things that matter.
19. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.
20. When things go wrong, pause and be kind to yourself.
21. Identify what helped you get through a tough time in your life.
22. Find 3 things you feel hopeful about and write them down.
23. Remember that all feelings and situations pass in time.
24. Choose to see something good about what has gone wrong.
25. Notice when you are being judge mental and be kind instead.
26. Catch yourself over-reacting and take a deep breath.
27. Write down 3 things you are grateful for (even if today was hard).
28. Think about what you can learn about a recent problem.
29. Be a realistic optimist. Focus on what could go right.,
30. Reach out to a friend, family member, or colleague for support.
31. Remember we all struggle at times. It’s part of being human.

It has been so hot here, I haven’t felt like doing anything. They are predicting record breaking heat for Tuesday at 112 degrees. My poor air conditioner is working overtime.
My eating has not been good lately…. Eating my emotions again. I do good for a while, then something happens and I get off track. I guess its normal for me. Wish I could change that habit.
My son is currently actively looking for work. He is away from that gang for the time being and hanging out with friends and relatives that are a better influence. He is a follower so will go with the leaders. He has had a couple interviews and is excited about both prospects. I am praying he gets a job soon. That will stabilize him.
I talk about him like he is a teenager. LOL He is 39 years old and has always had mental issues and problems he makes for himself but doesn’t see why he has the issues. Oh, well, what’s a mother to do but worry?
My daily meditations is helping me get through the tough days, and the easy ones. Doing this is helping me. I need to find a meditation that address emotional eating.
Exercising, and walking have fallen by the wayside, primarily due to the heat. I hope it breaks soon. The rest of the year here is so nice and conducive to outdoor activities. Just have to make it through this heat wave. Going on a month now of temps in the triple digits.

In action, its an interesting exchange for certain. I have 17 pen pals currently. Some we write twice a month, some just once a month, and the international ones every couple of months. We have been through, deaths, divorce, depression, but also births marriages, and joys. So the whole gambit of emotions with them all. At first we talked surface stuff, the weather, what we're doing, our favorite movies, or books. Then slowly over the years got into the nitty gritty of things. I had joined a "snail mail" Facebook group in 2018 and put a general bio on there, and got private messages from a group of people, and we exchanged addresses. Out of maybe 30 people these 17 have stuck with me. Most are my age, in their 60's, but my gal I am sending new apartment stuff to is 21. A couple are in their 50's. No guys though! Oh and we do not discuss politics or religion. If we do its just in the general sense.

got on the scale this morning and it was not good. Back just over 150 again with my goal still 127-129.
I have not been walking since Ezzie started summer vacation a month ago-was walking over 5 miles at least 4 days a week before picking her up from school.
I was getting frustrated that the scale wasn't moving with all that walking but today I see that it wasn't helping me loose weight but was helping keep it off.
Also stopped tracking for that month. Snacked a bit more than I should have but never crazy, just too often.
Going to try and get up early to walk around here before she comes in. Not as nice of a walk as the wetlands but more doable to be back in time for her. Should clear off my exercise bike too- it sits right next to me but hasn't been used in a few years. Keep saying I am going to...
Going to talk with two friends and see if we can start walking in the evenings again.
Dh did mention walking with me yesterday but by evening, he wasn't feeling it. Seems to happen often.
One of these days I will get him back out there.
Still doing Zumba twice a week but that is not enough.
Today I started tracking my food again. Maybe this evening we will walk, may not be the wetlands but better than nothing

Rita glad your son is doing better. Interviews are great!
Michele Wow forty people! That's a big party! Glad it went well.
I have an extra 200 calories to burn off, so I will be riding my bike some more. I don't think of Sundays as cheat days exactly, it's more about eating what my parents want to eat: red meat. Sad that I still do a bit of that. But only one day a week.
Now it's nap time, except there's another big rain storm. Teddy gets scared and is all over me.

I have decided to only eat off my Mommas plates. #1 they feel so familiar and my childhood comes rushing back, and #2 they are smaller than the plates we have.
Yesterday I made a big pit of rice, and cooked orange chicken in the oven. Its a prepackaged meal, frozen, that says Orange Chicken on the bag. To me they are just chicken nuggets, and it comes with the orange sauce you just toss and heat up in a pan together. Lee loves it and really chows. Why on earth seeing him so darn happy eating, makes me happy, but it does. Maybe because he's such a skinny guy so seeing him eating with a hearty appetite, it reassures me. I also remember in 20111-2013 his tastebuds were out of wack from meds so my cooking was terrible it seemed. He knew it was from the meds, but it still didn't make things easier. So now, it does my heart good to see him pat his stomach saying, "oh you did good dear mother". (yes sometimes he calls me Mother, because he knows I kinda hate it. That's what old peoples endearment sounds like, but also I kinda like it because we're that old couple I used to be envious of)!

He gets them from a plant nursery up the street. Even though the Safeway plant area is closer, he is all about funding the local businesses. The fact that it was for no reason at all, was sweet.🤗💖
I have taken this pen pal under my wing so to speak over the years. Its been nice to see her get more brave in the world and be on her own. I have always told her I never wanted to mother her, as she has a mother already. But to be her Auntie works. Kids nowadays need all the adult cheerleaders for them they can get.👍🏼💖
